T H B POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MAY 20, 1892. VOL. IX., No. 876. 2. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning per sons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they a- re sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is - iffered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and v,,. exact conditions be clearly stated. b. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will he prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. Cd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Krery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an offi.- er of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to I* inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer of not less rank Hon Inspect nr. or analoaous thereto. REGULATIONS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. ^ g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted » » the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whi: A may reiult from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forxarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Causing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It IB particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be « it once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, MI account of their not being in accordance with the regu- ations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. (£>) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. S. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT- 1 — B Division.— For stealing £ 50— GEORGE RAVENSHAW, age 65, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion fair, hair and side whiskers grey; dress, black coat, dark trousers, black felt hat. Supposed native of King's Lynn, Norfolk. 2.— E Division.— For obtaining money by fraud under the Bank ruptcy Act — ARTHUR ALCOCK, age 48, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( wavy) grey, speaks throogh his nose; dress, light clothes. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division. — For obtaining £ 50 by means of false and fraudulent pretences as a sham theatrical agent— EAST LYNNE, alias H. ANDER- SON, and PROFESSOR HAINLEY, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair dark, turning grey, bald on top, light patches at side of head, eyes blue, eyebrows turned up, top of head very broad, chin and lips thin, stoops ; dress, black cloth donble- breasted jacket, check trousers, high silk hat, patent leather boots. Warrant issued. 4.— K Division. — For obtaining £ 11 by means of false cheques on the Grimsby Branch of the Hull Banking Company— WILLIAM ANDREWS, alias J. R. ROBERTS ( see Case No. 3, 15th and 22nd ult.), age 29, height 5 ft. Gin., complexion fresh, hair brown, very light slight moustache, eyes blue, speaks with provincial accent and with closed teeth; dress, blue serge suit of superior make, white collar, black silk tie, hard felt hat. A native of Grimsby, about which place he talks freely. Was lately master of the steam trawler " Greencastle," of Lowestoft. Is well known at Hull, Grimsby, Ramsgate, Dover, Brighton, and Cuxhaven. Has called upon numerous hotel - keepers and publicans in the provinces, under pretence of pur- chasing businesses. He obtains lodgings, & c., and obtains or endeavours to obtain cash for worthless cheques, on the Grimsby Branch of the Hull Banking Company. It is requested that hotel valuers, public- house brokers, auctioneers, & c., be warned respecting him, and if found to be detained. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 5. — For stealing £ 13— W. G. RYLAND, age 18, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, smooth face ; dress, short blue jacket, black vest, grey striped trousers, black hard felt hat. Late of 12, Barclay- park- terrace, Ley ton, Essex. May endeavour to go to sea. Warrant issued. 6. — For stealing a quantity of watches, rings, & c., 10th inst.— ALFRED ERNEST RICHARD- SON, a commission agent, late of 5, College- street, Belvedere- roa'l, Lambeth, London, age 22, height 5 ft. in., complexion ruddy, hair reddish brown, brushed high in front, no whiskers, beard, or moustache, speaks with an Irish- American accent; dress, brown mixture or black suit with morning coat. Left his lodgings 11th inst., with a heavy American trunk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7.— Luton ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 7, by means of a fraudulent cheque on the Hall Banking Company, 23rd ult.— JOHN ROLAND ROBERTS, alias WILLIAM ANDREWS, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, small light moustache. ( Same as described in Case No. 3, 15th ult.). Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Jaquest, Luton. BERKSHIRE. 8. — Faringdon ( County). — For larceny at Bourton, on 4tli inst.— A MAN, age 30 to 34, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, impediment in speech, walks a little lame; dress, long dark plaid overcoat, dark cloth trousers, old side- spring boots, white collar, white- spotted blue tie with two pins ( one horseshoe, the other a whip), dark cap with double peak. Stated he was going to South Wales. Information to Supt. Butcher, Faringdon. BRECONSHIRE. 9.— Crickhowell ( County). — For stealing a light plaid ccat, drab lining ( torn), usual pockets, dark brown bone buttons, vest to match, and a pair of dark cloth trousers- STEPHEN SIMPSON, alias FRED WILLIAMS, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) light brown, light sandy moustache, short side whiskers; dressed in stolen clothes. A farm labourer; native of Calne, Wiltshire, or neighbourhood, where he stated his father was a farmer. Has been in the Army. Supposed previously convicted in Wiltshire. Warrant issued. CHESHIRE. 10.— Chester ( City).— For stealing a horse and trap ( recovered)— HENRY CLARK, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair and moustache dark, otherwise clean shaved ; dress, blue- black overcoat 4 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. Supposed ( o be identical with a man wanted at Nottingham and Leicester for a similar offence. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester. DENBIGHSHIRE. 11.— Denbigh ( County).— For deserting his family— THOMAS WILLIAMS, age 34, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, long face, " T. W." tattooed back of left arm, heart lelt wrist, blue mark back of third fiDger left hand, crcss front of right forearm. A labourer; native of Llamhaiadr, near Denbigh. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Denbigh. DERBYSHIRE. 12.— Chapel - en - le - Frith ( County).— For embezzlement, at Buxton, on 25th ult.— WILLIAM V. BURDOCK, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair dark, heavy moustache, has a running sore on the calf of each leg, walks erect; dress, dark grey tweed or black cloth suit, hard felt hat. A poulterer and fishmonger; native of Bays water, London. Has been employed in various parts of London, Manchester, Birmingham, Not- tingham, and Leicester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hallam, Chapel- en- le- Frith. 13.— Chesterfield ( County).— For stealing, at Temple Normanton, on 7th inst., a silver lever waltham watch, No. 171880, makers " Kendal & Dent, 105, Cheapside, London," on movement— JOHN RAMSDEN, alias GEORGE WALLACE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache, no whiskers, of military appearance; dress, black coat and vest, brown striped trousers, black hard felt bat, usually wears a blue and white handkerchief round his neck. A labourer; native of Robin Hood, near Leeds. Has served in the 4th Regt. of Foot, from which he was discharged for miscon- dnct. Has friends lesiding at Tinsley and East Ardsley, near Wakefield. He booked from Mansfield to London by train on the evening of 8th inst. Will probably endeavour to obtain a situation as stoker on board ship. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Hollingworth, Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 14.— Exeter ( County).— For stealing between 2nd and 4th inst., at Dawlish and Sidmouth— A silver- plated fish slice and fork, in brown leather case ; 6 plated forks and 6 ivory- handled plated fish knives ; a lady's small gold watch, engraved inside hack " Miss F. Nicholl, from a Friend, St. Saviour, Birmingham, Sept. 19th, 1882"; a gold key, shape of a pistol; a lady's gold watch, engraved inside caso " Presented to Miss Walker, as a token of esteem, by her affectionate pupils, Dundee " ; a gold brooch, oval- shape, with cross, anchor, and heart in centre under glass, twisted band round brooch; and 2 short fine gold chains— License Holder JOHN ROBERTS, alias CHARLES LAMBERTH, JOHN SMITH, and CHARLES SCHMIDT, Office No. 40611, age about 60, height 5 ft. 9j in., com- plexion fresh, hair and long moustache grey, eyes grey', oval face, small mole front of neck, cupping mark back of neck, scar bridge of nose, right knee, mole and scar above right hip, mole right of ribs and back, double- ruptured; dress, dark overcoat, dark clothes, and flat top hat. Of very gentlemanly appearance. Speaks with a foreign accent. A native of Strasburg. G L 326. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. 15.— Exeter ( City).— For stealing a gold watch ( recovered) — ED WIN J. SMITH ( probably fictitious), a canvasser, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion very swarthy, hair, small side whiskers, and moustache black, eyes dark and very piercing, high cheek bones, muscular build, supposed large scar on right side, speaks with a slight Scotch or north- country accent, smart military appearance ; dress, dark plaid jacket and trousers, vest different material, turn- down collar, white cotton tie, lace boots, black hfird felt hat. Stated he had been in a cavalry regiment, and was invalided from India on a pension. Has in his possession a photograph ease witli samples belonging to Mr. Soammell, photographer. May be found canvassing for photographs, or in tho company of soldiers. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Court House, Exeter. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 16.— Dumfries ( County).— For stealing, 29th January last, a silver lever watch ( recovered) — RICHARD GALLOWAY, age 18, height 5ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark ; dress, light check tweed jacket suit. A farm servant; native of Mauchline, Ayrshire. May have enlisted in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Gordon, Dumfries. DURHAM. 17.— Castle Eden ( County). — For office- breaking and shop- breaking, on 25th ult. and 2nd inst., at Trimdon— Two men ; 1st, JOHN THOS. HAMILTON, age 32, height 5 ft. in., com- plexion fair, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes blue; dress, dark suit and cap, coarse blue stockings, strong hob- nailed boots. A native of Guisborough.— 2nd, DAVID HAMILTON, age 38, height 5 ft. 6| in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache dark, eyes blue, pockpitted; dress, dark suit and cap. A hawker, miner, or labourer ; native of Whitby. These men are brothers, and are well known about the county of Durham and North Riding of Yorkshire. Both have been many times convicted of larceny, game trespass, & c., at Castle Eden, Durham, Houghton, Seaham Harbour, and other places. Warrant issued. 18. — Castle Eden ( County). — For stealing £ 18 12s. 6d. larceny ( person), at Hutton Henry, on 6th inst.— PETER WINSTANLEY, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, short side whiskers and moustache dark ; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, black hard felt hat. Carried a bundle containing a black cord jacket suit. A coal miner ; native of Wigan. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Castle Eden. ESSEX. 19.— Southend ( County). — For obtaining a gold albert chain, 18- carat, fetter and link pattern, by false pretences— COLONEL C. A. CLIFFORD ( supposed false), age 65, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stout build, complexion florid, rather flabby cheeks, hair and heavy moustache grey, no whiskers, peculiar cast in one eye, very plausible address, and of mili- tary appearance; dress, dark grey overcoat, light trousers, black hard felt hat. Stated he was an Inspector of Ports. He tendered in payment two cheques on Sir Charles R. McGregor, Bart., Co.' s Bank, 25, Charles- street, St. James's- square, London, which have been returned endorsed " No account." Cheque- book stolen. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. FLINTSHIRE. 20.— Holywell ( County). — For stealing £ 6 lis. 3d.— THOMAS EVANS, alias CARVAEN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, eyes blue, slightly bald on top of head; dress, blue cloth coat and vest, light striped trousers, dark silk necktie with blue stripe, low shoes, black felt hat. A native of Aberaman, Glamorganshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hughes, Holywell. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 21.— Swansea ( Borough). — For stealing £ 26 16s. l| d!., on 9th inst.— EDWIN STUTELY, a clerk, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache ( heavy) brown, large broad nose, with pimples from the effects of drink, blinks his eyes when speaking, very splay- footed; supposed dressed in short blue overcoat, black morning coat and vest, light trousers, and black bowler hat. Prior to 1st January, 1891, bo lived at 3, Tranton- road, St. James'- roud, Bermondsey, London. Nino years ago he was in the Telegraph Battalion, Royal Engineers, stationed at Bristol. His father is station- master at Brookland Station, Kent. He is fond of betting, and may be found at race meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Colquhoun, Swansea. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Portsmouth ( Borough)-.— For embezzle- ment— WILLIAM HULL, age about 34, height about 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and very heavy moustache black, no whiskers, shuffles his heels when walking, tattooed on right arm ( believed above elbow) with Sootch woman dancing; dress, light grey tweed coat and vest, light cord trousers, brown felt hat, heavy nail boots. Is a discharged soldier from the G7th Hampshire Regt., and has a pension of 6d. per day. Absconded 13th inst., up to which time be was employed as a brewer's drayman. May seek similar employment. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 23.— Bromyard ( County).— For stealing a pair of boots ( recovered) on 2nd ult.— ELIZABETH TAYLOR, age 26, height 5 ft. 1 in , complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes grey. Is a notorious thief and prostitute. Has with her a child 9 months old, and is accompanied by her husband, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, small side whiskers, long, thin white face; dressed in white slop, corduroy trousers, and old black felt hat. Supposed to have gone into Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. HERTFORDSHIRE. 24.— Ware ( County). — For stealing a bicycle—• FREDERICK CLAUD EAVES, alias G. H. BROWNING, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark, eyes hazel, has lost left hand, and wears an artificial substitute which is covered by an old brown kid glove, and kept behind him when speaking, scar on bridge of nose, three sores on left of forehead ; dress, black morning coat, dark striped trousers with hole worn through inside of knee, light- coloured cloth cap or silk hat. 25.— Ware ( County).— For neglecting to comply with an order of maintenance— THOS. RICKETTS, age 29 ( looks older), height 5 ft. lOf in., stout build, complexion dark, hair light brown, eyes blue, T tattooed on left forearm, scar on back of neck. A well- sinker ; native of Hoddesdon, Herts. Resided from March, 1888, to July, 1890, at the " Rising Sun " public- house, West Town, Bickwell, Bristol, and from July, 1890, to April, 1892, at 1, Wood- bridge- terracc, Walthamstow. Has worked for Messrs. Docwra, Ball's Pond- road, Islington, Lea Bridge Waterworks, Stratford, and, during this year, at Lager Brewery, Tottenham. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Supt., Ware. £ 1 REWARD. 26.— Ware ( Reformatory).— Absconded from the Herts Reformatory, Ware, 13th inst.— ALBERT NEAL, age 15, height 5 ft. 3^ in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes grey, speaks with slightly imperfect utterance, was wearing thei following uniform:— cord jacket and vest, plated buttons, cord trousers, dark cloth cap trimmed with narrow red braid, red striped cotton shirt, worsted socks, strong lace shoes ; clothes numbered inside 479. A native of Sand gate, Kent. Information to Mr. J. A. Fish, Herts Reformatory, Ware, by whom the above reward, together with all necessary expenses, will be paid for the recovery of Neal. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 27. — St. NeotS ( County).— For larceny— ALFRED CLAY, late of Buckden, Huntingdon, age 36, height 5 ft. 9| in., complexion fair, hair TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 1 8 9 2 . T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 1 light, eyes brown, moustache ginger, little finger « right hand contracted, walks very erect, smart appearance ; stated he had been in the Army. A basket- maker; native of Sutton, Isle of Ely. May ' endeavour to get work at h's trade in London or ' Kent, or may be found hawking nuts, & c., at fairs and race meetings. Warrant issued. * Information to Supt. Copping, St. Neots. ( boil), mole back of left forearm, lost 3rd left finger, 4th left finger contracted. Sentenced at Nottingham, 3rd July, 1891, to 9 months hard labour, and 1 year police supervision, for larceny. 80. Information to the Chief Constable, Nottingham. KENT. 28.— Ashford ( County).— For stealing a silver full- plated English lever watch, No. 58762, maker's name " Benson," on plate, seconds hand deficient, outside case does not fasten properly ; and a silver albert, with 4 or 5 coins attached— A MAN, who stated he was a civil engineer, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, rather full face, hair dark brown, small moustache, no whiskers, scar ' back of left hand, supposed from burn or scald; dress, light suit, trousers different colour to coat and vest, light cloth cap with peak of same material, ' red striped collar, wore albert with locket at end. 1 Is also wanted at Dover, Walmer, & c. Information to Supt. Wenham, Ashford. 29.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing from • a public- house, 4th inst., 6 silver teaspoons, chased handles, marked " E. P. W."; 4 plain silver tea- spoons ; 1 plated mustard- spoon, marked " E. P. W." ; 2 plated salt- spoons ; 1 plated ivory handle butter- knife ; 6 old five- shilling pieces ; 1 old half- crown piece ; 1 four- penny piece, and a number of other old coins— TWO MEN :— let, age about 22, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light; dress, dark cloth jacket and trousers, collar and front, black hard billycock hat.— 2nd, age about 20, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion and hair dark, slightly pockpitted ; dress, double- breasted black " diagonal jacket, dark trousers, collar and front, black hard billycock hat. Both were very re ' spectably dressed, and are supposed to belong to London. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 30.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing a silver . geneva watch ; silver albert; ar, d gold signet ring ( very old), with bloodstone— A MAN, ageabout30, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache inclined to sandy; dress, light tweed suit, and light cloth cap of same material, with peak ; of respectable appearance. Stated he was an electrical engineer. Supposed wanted at Ashford and other places. Information to Snpt. Sanders, Dover. CLARE ( supposed false), age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( curled at ends) dark, otherwise clean shaved; dress, dark overcoat with velvet collar, dark coat, brown trousers with light silk stripe, black hard hat; was wearing gold chain, and carried a black silk umbrella with silver knob. He took lodgings at a quiet coffee- house and stayed indoors for two days, obtained the names of people from the proprietor of the coffee- house, engaged a horse and trap and drove to Leicester where he sold the same by auction in the market. The pipe is seasoned dark colour half- way down, the bottom part being of a yellow colour. The stem which is slightly bent, has an amber mouthpiece, and branches off from the middle of the bowl.
