All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOU OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning personswhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force Varticula rs as to stolen property will be likewise inserted ui one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given,. iynd tin exact conditions be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. Cd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. • 6 Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by thesignature of an officer of not less rank ihan Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and nojearrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. X^. EO- XJL- A. TXOISrS- 3. 4. 5. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. ^ 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whim may reiwt from such publication. 11. Announcemtntsfor the Friday issue should be forxarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Kern Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Co.," Post Office Order payable at Causing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. . James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It ia particularly requested that any com- plaints as to tho non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be it once notified to tho Editor. < d) The following is a copy of the orler which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- ations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Folice Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1— C. I. Department. — For obtaining money by fraud through the " Matrimonial News"— ALBERT D'NILLERS, supposed a Frenchman, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly, but getting bald) dark brown, small dark moustache and imperial, eyes blue- grey, slight im- pediment in speech, open countenance, flat- footed; dress, light dust overcoat, dark* " Jacket, light striped trousers, high hat, wears sapphire and diamond pin, and carries a silk umbrella, cherry- wood handle, with gold band, having initials A. D. N. Warrant issued. 2. — A Division.— For forgery and larceny— HARRY STANLEY BROWN, alias B. WALTER, an American, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and small moustache dark brown, piercing dark brown eyes, very stout full face, small hands, smart Jewish appearance, is very talkative; dress, dark blue overcoat with velvet collar and deep velvet cuffs, soft black felt hat with narrow brim. Warrant issued. 3.— M Division. — For unlawfully carnally knowing a girl under the age of 16 years— WILLIAM JAMES PRESS, age 25, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel, varicose veins on arms; dress, light check suit, black felt hat, wears imitation diamond pin. Has been a billiard- marker, and may seek similar em- ployment in Birmingham, where he is known. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4. - For stealing £ 13— W. G. RYLAND, age 18, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, smooth face; dress, short blue jacket, black vest, grey Etriped trousers, black hard felt hat. Late of 12, Barclay- park- terrace, Leyton, Essex. May endeavour to go to sea. Warrant issued. Information; to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, London, E C. DENBIGHSHIRE. 5. — Denbigh ( County).— For deserting his family— THOMAS WILLIAMS, age 34, height 5 ft. 9^ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, long face, " T. W." tattooed back of left arm, heart left wrist-, blue mark back of third finger left hand, cross front of right forearm. A labourer; native of Llamhaiadr, near Denbigh. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jone?, Denbigh. DERBYSHIRE. 6. — Chesterfield ( County).— For stealing, at Temple Norman ton, on 7th inst., a silver lever waltham watch, No. 171880, makers " Kendal & Dent, 106, Cheapside, London," on movement— JOHN RAMSDEN, alias GEORGE WALLACE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache, no whiskers, of military appearance; dress, black coat and vest, brown striped trousers, black hard felt bat, usually wears a blue and white handkerchief round his neck. A labourer; native of Robin Hood, near Leeds. Has served in the 4th Regt. of Foot, from which he was discharged for miscon- duct. Has friends tesiding at Tinsley and East Ardsley, near Wakefield. He booked from Mansfield to London by train on the evening of 8th inst. Will probably endeavour to obtain a situation as stoker on board ship. Warrant issued. Information to Sapt. Hollingworth, Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 7. — Exeter ( County).— For stealing between 2nd and 4th inst, at Dawlish and Sidmouth— A silver- plated fish slice and fork, in brown leather case ; 6 plated forks and 6 ivory- handled plated fish knives; a lady's small gold watch, engraved inside back " Miss F. Nicholl, from a Friend, St. Saviour, Birmingham, Sept. 19tb, 1882 "; a gold key, shape of a pistol; a lady's gold watch, engraved inside case " Presented to Miss Walker, as a token of esteem, by her affectionate pupils, Dundee " ; a gold brooch, oval- shape, with cross, anchor, and heart in centre under glass, twisted band round brooch; and 2 short fine gold chains— License Holder JOHN ROBERTS, alias CHARLES LAMBERTH, JOHN SMITH, and CHARLES SCHMIDT, Office No. 40611, age about 60, height 5 ft. in., com- plexion fresh, hair and long moustache grey, eyes grey, oval face, small mole front of neck, cupping mark back of neck, scar bridge of nose, right knee, mole and scar above right hip, mole right of ribs and back, double- ruptured; dress, dark overcoat, dark clothes, and flat top hat. Of very gentlemanly appearance. Speaks with a foreign accent. A native of Strasburg. G L 326. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 8.— Dumfries ( County).— For stealing, 29th January last, a silver lever watch ( recovered) — RICHARD GALLOWAY, age 18, height 5ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark ; dress, light check tweed jacket suit. DURHAM. 9. — Castle Eden ( County). — For officc- hreaking and shop- breaking, on 25th ult. and 2nd inst., at Tiimdon— Two men ; 1st, JOHN THOS. HAMILTON, age 32, height 5 ft. 9i in., com- plexion fair, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes blue; dress, dark suit and cap, coarse blue stockings, strong hob- nailed hoots. A native of Guisborongh.— 2nd, DAVID HAMILTON, age 38, height 5 ft. 6f in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache dark, eyes blue, pockpitted ; dress, dark suit and cap. A hawker, miner, or labourer ; native of Whitby. These men are brothers, and are well known about the county of Durham and North Riding of Yorkshire. Both have been many times convicted of larceny, game trespass, & c., at Castle Eden, Durham, Houghton, Seaham Harbour, and other places. Warrant issued. 10.— Castle Eden ( County). — For stealing £ 18 12s. 6d. larceny ( person), at Hutton Henry, on 6th inst.— PETER WINSTANLEY, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, short side whiskers and moustache dark ; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, black hard felt hat. Carried a bundle containing a black cord jicket suit. A coal miner ; native of Wigan. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Webster, Castle Eden. ESSEX. 11— Southend ( County). — For obtaining a gold albert chain, 18- carat, fetter and link pattern, hy false pretences— COLONEL C. A. CLIFFORD ( supposed false), age 65, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stout build, complexion florid, rather flabby cheeks, hair and heavy moustache grey, no whiskers, peculiar cast in one eye, very plausible address, and of mili- tary appearance; dress, dark grey overcoat, light trousers, black hard felt hat.' Stated he was an Inspector of Ports. He tendered in payment two cheques on Sir Charles R. McGregor, Bart., Co.' s Bank, 25, Charles- street, St. James's- squire, London, which have been returned endorsed " No account." Cheque- book stolen. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. HEREFORDSHIRE. 12.— Bromyard ( County).— For stealing a pair of hoots ( recovered) on 2nd ult.— ELIZABETH TAYLOR, age 26, height 5 ft. 1 in, complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes grey. Is a notorious thief and prostitute. Has with her a child 9 months old, and is accompanied by her husband, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, small side whiskers, long, thin white face; dressed in white slop, corduroy trousers, and old black felt hat. Supposed to have gone into Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. HERTFORDSHIRE. 13.— Ware ( County).— For neglecting to comply with an order of maintenance— THOS. RICKETTS, age 29 ( looks older), height 5 ft. lOf in., stout build, complexion dark, hair light brown, eyes blue, T tattooed on left forearm, scar on back of neck. A well- sinker; native of Hoddesdon, Herts. Resided from March, 1888, to July, 1890, at the " Rising Sun " public- house, West Town, Backwell, Bristol, and from July, 1890, to April, 1892, at 1, Wood- bridge- terrace, Walthamstow. Has worked for Messrs. Docwrj, Bill's Pond- road, Islington, Lea Bridge Waterworks, Stratford, and, during thi3 year, at Lager Brewer)-, Tottenham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wymer, Ware. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 14. — St. Neots ( County).— For larceny— ALFRED CLAY, late of BuckdeD, Huntingdon, age 36, height 5 ft. 9| in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes brown, moustache ginger, little finger right hand contrtibted, walks very direct, smart appearance ; stated he had been in the Army. A basket- maker; native of Sutton, Isle of Ely. May endeavour to get wotk at h> s trade i. u J^ ondon or Kent, or may be found hawking nuts, & c,, at fairs and race meetings. Warrant issued. W."; 4 plain silver tea- spoons ; 1 plated mustard- spoon, marked " E. P. W." ; 2 plated salt- spoons ; 1 plated ivory handle butter- knife ; 6 old five- shilling piecas ; 1 old half- crown piece; 1 four- penny piece, and a number of other old coins— TWO MEN :— lst, age about 22, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light; dress, dark cloth jacket and trousers, collar and front, black hard billycock hat.— 2nd, age about 20, height 5 ft. 5 or G in., complexion and hair dark, slightly pockpitted; dress, double- breasted black diagonal jacket, dark trousers, collar and front, black hard billycock hat. Both were very re- spectably dressed, and are supposed to belong to London. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 16. — Tunbridge Wells ( Borough). — For fraudulently obtaining a stack of hay by represent- ing that he was a coal, hay and root merchant in a large way of business — GEORGE SIMS, alias CLARKE and CASTRO, late of 19, Granville- road, Lewisham, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion very pale, thin face, hair dark brown, rather bushy mutton- chop whiskers. LANCASHIRE. 17.— Garstang ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee ELLEtf WARD, Office No. 40316, age 52, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes blue, scab's on right chcek, each side fore- head and bridge of nose, fourth right finger crooked. Sentenced at Lancaster, 7th April, 1890, to 6 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. Information to Supt. Bourke, Garstang. 18.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For failing to report— Supervisee EDWARD WELSH, Office No. 25543, age 42, height 5 ft. 5]- in., complexion dark, hair dark, eyes hazel, back covered with pimples and miner's marks, numerous scars on forehead, oval face, muscular build; a native of Ireland. Sentenced at Salford, 27th February, 1879, to 7 years penal servitude and 7 years police super- vision for larceny ( person). Licensed 12th August, 1881. F 193. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. 19.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report — License Holder JOHN SMITH, alias JOHN WALKER, Office No. 42029, age 39, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scars bridge of nose, top of head, left side forehead, in- side right knee, and cupping scars on left breast, 4th right finger broken, right shoulder deformed from fracture, bracelet on left wrist. Sentenced at Salford, 24th October, 1887, to 5 years penal servi- tude and 7 years police supervision for larceny. Supervisee JOHN REYNOLDS, alias WILLIAM MANCHESTER, Office No 38660, age 34, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, liair dark, eyes grey, scars on crown, left eyebrow, right wrist and left cheek, lost right thumb. Sentenced at Manchester, 14th October, 1835, to 5 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision for housebreaking. Supervisee THOMAS HARLAND, alias MOR- LAND, Office No. 40267, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes dark brown, large birthmark right side face, head and neck and crown of head, ssars on left thumb. Sentenced at North- allerton, 19th October, 1886, to 5 years penal servi- tude and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. LEICESTERSHIRE. 20.— Market Harborough ( County).— For stealing a horEe, trap and harness ( recovered), 7th inst.— H. CLARE ( supposed false), age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( curled at ends) dark, otherwise clean shaved j dress, dark overcoat with velvet collar, dark^ cpat;, ' brown trouser3. with light silk stripe, black hard hat; was wearing gold chain, and carried a black silk umbrella with silver knob. He took lodgings at a quiet coffee- house and stayed indoors for two days, obtained the names of people from the proprietor of the coffee- house, engaged a horse and trap and drove to Leicester, where lie sold the same by auction in the market. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 21.— Northampton ( Borough).— For stealing £ 2 in silver and copper— GEORGE PARTRIDGE, a labourer, age about 17, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in. » rather stout build, complexion, fresh, hair and eyes dark; dress, brown jacket, grey striped trousers, light cap. Has friends residing at Handswprth, near Bir- mingham . quid Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. • :— jmr STAFFORDSHIRE. 22— Stafford ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings hy false pretences — THOMAS F. KELLY, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, weight about 15 stone, complexion fre3h, hair light brown, light sandy moustache, eyes grey, very erect; dress, drab dust coat or fashionable blue melton with velvet collar, new greyish plaid suit, brown felt hat. Born in the Army, and was formerly a lieutenant in the 24th Regiment of Foot,— Welsh Borderers. Frequents hotels, and forces his company upon military officers. Talks much of his service in Burmah and Egypt. Is said to be a personal friend of a lieutenant in the 6th Dragoon Guards, now stationed at Edinburgh. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Anson, Chief Constable, Stafford. 23.— Wednesbury ( County).— Foi4 stealing a horse, trap, and harness ( recovered), at Wednes- bury, 5th inst.— A man, who gave the name of H. TURNER, ago about 27, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, good- looking, and of gentlemanly appearance ; dress, blue overcoat, blue- coloured trousers, hard black billycock hat, collar and light tie; carried an umbrella. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Wednesbury. SUSSEX ( EAST). 24.— Hayward's Heath ( County).— For taking away Fanny Bartley ( age about 17, complexion fair ; dress, green stuff dress and hat) out of the possession and against the will of her father at Ardingly on 10th inst.— GEORGE AMBROSE DUMSDAY, age 22, height 5 ft. in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, scar back of neck; dress, light suit and cap with peak, thin boots. A tailor, late of Ardingly, Sussex. Has lately been working in Leicestershire. Left Horsted Keynes Railway^. Station by 11.30 a. m. train, 10th inst., for London Bridge Station. Warrant issued. WARWICKSHIRE. 25.— Aston ( County).— For stealing from lodg- ings, 1 silver dessert spoon ; 1 lea spoon and sugar tongs, leaving, in their stead, metal onts— A MAN, age about 33, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion very dark, hair and eyes dark brown, face rather disfigured on one side; impediment in speech ; dress, fawn- coloured overcoat, dark suit, black felt hat, laca boots. Stated he was a draughtsman. Information to Snpt. Walker, Aston. 26.— Atherstone ( County).— For stealing at Hartshill, 28th ult.; a silver lever watch ( recovered), a chain and a pocket knife— THOMAS HEXTALL, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., slender build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, anchor tattooed on right arm, three small blue marks under left eye ; dress, light plaid suit, brown hard felt hat, blue striped scarf, lace boots, patched; a labourer, native of Thornton, Leicestershire. Hannah, Atlierstone. 27.— Bi rmingham ( City).— For embezzling the sum of 18s.— HENRY SIMMONS, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion ruddy, hair brown, eyes dark, walks erect ; dress, green overcoat, red and black mixture vest, light trousers, patched with leather at the bottoms inside, black and white check scarf, billycock hat pressed np at sides. Warrant issued. 28.— Birmingham ( City). — For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 100 on Lloyd's Bank, Bir- mingham ; also for stealing £ 35 cash and 3 blank cheques on Lloyd's Bank, Colmore- row, Birmingham, on 3rd inst.— WILLIAM HENRY OGDEN, age 19, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion aud hair dark, slight moustache, eyes hazel, well educated and of good appearance, rather shy and nervous in address; dress, dark beaver overcoat, with velvet collar, dark blue jacket and vest, blue striped trousers, black bowler hat. Had with him a small handbag. An accountant's clerk, _ native of Bir- mingham. Is probably accompanied by GARNER ODELL, age 19 or 20, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in , complexion ruddy, hair dark brown, just growing a moustache and side whiskers. OGDEN absconded on 3rd inst., and will probably try to emigrate. Had in his possession about £ 85, and the three blank cheques Nos. L | S 7040, 7045 and 7051. It is requested that enquiry be made at shipping offices and temperance hotels. Warrant issued for the apprehension of Ogden. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Bir- mingham. WILTSH IRE. 29.— Chippenham ( County). — For obtaining £ 33 by false pretences, at Calne— JOHN TONKIN, age 30, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, heavy brown moustache, otherwise clean shaved, eyes blue, smart appearance; dress, usually brown tweed suit, round hard brown hat, lace boots. A dealer; native of Launceston. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barrett, Chippenham. WORCESTERSHIRE. 30.— Stourbridge ( County).— For attempted rape at Kidderminster, Foreign, on 3rd inst.— A MAN, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh or florid, moustache slight, may have small side whiskers; dress, dark brown or dirty black coat, vest and trousers, old lace boots, white neckerchief, black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Wheeler, Stourbridge. Warrant issued. Information to Supt.
