XT All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them thould be addressed to THE KDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they u, e sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 5. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thevchy identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name ana address of some person responsible for the payment must be given., and in.', exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense » f engraving on wood. 6. £ very announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of anojicer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to A ie inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief • officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7, Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank • than Inspector, or analogous thereto. REGULATIONS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. ^ 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor nohce of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request j or insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whim may re:, u: t from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnanng Cross, Postal Order, or t* Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.'— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond Ihe number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be $ it once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- ations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— A Division.— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 6 10s. — GODFREY MITCHELL COOMBS, age 32, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache sandy, eyes light blue, round shoulders ; is fond of drink and the company of prostitutes; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, grey trousers, lace boots, High silk hat. A native of Lambeth. Warrant issued. 2. — E Division. — For obtaining money by false pretences from solicitors, to whom she repre- sents she is coming into property and wants them to act for her— ELLEN DAVIS, alias BUTLER, age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, eyes brown. She is suffering from heart disease and shortness of breath ; dressed in black cloak, and black straw hat with feathers. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3. — For forging and uttering a banker's draft for £ 2,190, on 20th inst — H. MEYER, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair and side whiskers light; dress, dark frock coat and high silk hat. 4.— For embezzlement — ROBT. W. BILLING, late of 31, Huddart- street, Burnett- road, E , age 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, slight light moustache, pale face ; dress, dark jacket suit and deerstalker hat. A traveller in the iron tube trade. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 5.— Bedford ( County). — For stealing a shirt, at Ravensden, 24th inst.— JAMES HEATHFIELD, age 31, height 5 ft 8^ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, slight dark moustache, eyes brown; dress, dark plaid jacket, white moleskin trousers and vest, blue- and- white striped neckerchief, dark cloth peak- cap, lace boots. Native of Bedford. Warrant issued. 6.— Bedford ( County). — For being an acces- sory after the fact, in stealing a shirt at Ravensden, on 24th inst.— WALTER ODEIL, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, peculiarity about the eyes, which are bloodshot; dress, dark coat ( much worn), cord trousers, dirty handkerchief round neck, heavy lace boots, dark cap. A native of Kempston. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Quenby, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing the sum of £ 5, on 19th inst.— JOHN RATCLIFFE, age 14, height 4 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair light brown; dress, green tweed coat, fawn- colour trousers, navy- blue necktie with white spots, button boots, grey cloth cap with peak. Has relations residing at Billericay and at Rayleigh, Essex, whom he may visit. He is very fond of the company of soldiers, and may he found where they are. Has been pre- viously convicted at Reading, Oxford, Portsmouth, and Winchester. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. 8.— Windsor ( Borough). — For stealing, 18th inst.— A dark grey morning cutaway coat, pockets on hips, and two inside breast FISHER, a tailor, age about 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion florid, hair and moustache light; has the appearance of a heavy drinker. Is supposed to be accompanied by his wife, tall; dressed in dark grey shawl, and black dress. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 9.— Chesham ( County). — For forgiDg and uttering a bill of exchange— CHARLES LONG, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair, moustache and eyebrows dark, thin straggling whiskers, of good address ; dress, dark suit, may be wearing a light dust or dark- blue overcoat, a high or black hard felt hat. Carries an umbrella and a hand- bag. A boot and shoe manufacturer, of Ches- ham. Has a retail depot at Bridge- street, South-' ampton. May endeavour to leave the country for America. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Clarke, Chesham. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 10.— Isle of Ely ( County).— For embezzlement at Doddington, on 7th inst.— JOHN GILLINGS, or JENNINGS, a labourer, age about 18, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, rather round- shouldered; dress, grey jacket and trousers with brown patch on each knee, black vest, heavy lace boots, yellow and black mixture cap. Talked about going into Yorkshire and went in that direction. Warrant issued. CARNARVONSHIRE. 11.— Conway { County).— For indecentlyassault- ing a girl under 13 years of age— BRYAN CASEY, r> dt T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 1892. alias RILEY, asje about 32, height 6 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache brown; dress, dark brown suit and cap. A native of Car- narvon. Has been in the Army. Travels the country, mending umbrellas, & c.,. and may be accompanied by a woman, called " Rosie," a pedlar, age 30 to 35, height about 4 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ; dress, red skirt, and light plaid shawl. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Williams, Conway. CUMBERLAND. 12.— Penrith ( County).— For stealing from a safe, on 14th inst., a canvas bag, with piece of stamped paper gummed on, bearing the words " Farmers' Club Subscriptions," containing about £ 9 5s.; and a canvas bag containing £ 1 7s. 2d.; also a cheque for ±' 2 3s. 6cl. on the Carlisle and Cumberland Bank, drawn by William Teas- dale, of Hunsonby — A MAN, age 50 to 60, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair grey, clean shaved except upper lip, nose rather flat; dress, when last seen, black melton coat, dark small check vest, grey striped trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A clerk ; native of Edinburgh. He came to Penrith on 30th ult. on tramp, and obtained an appointment as clerk in an auctioneer's office, signing his initials " W. W." Stated he had been in Borneo, West Indies, and left there in 1872, also that his name was W. Jackson, and that he belonged to Edinburgh. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Russell, Penrith. 13.— Carlisle ( City).— For stealing £ 100 in gold, llth inst.— WILLIAM SUTHERLAND, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair brown, moustache light, eyes hazel; dress, blue overcoat, black coat and vest, blue striped trousers, and sup- posed brown felt hat. A watchmaker; native of Aberdeen. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mackay, Carlisle. DEVONSHIRE. 14.— Exeter ( City).— For deserting his five children, 16th inst.— JOHN CURRAN, age 50, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion dark, full red face, hair, whiskers, and moustache black, speaks with cockney accent; dress, black frock coat, cord trousers, black bowler hat, dirty white muffler, thin lace boots. A hatter; native of London. Is accompanied by his wife— JANE CURRAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, com- plexion dark, full face, hair ( wavy) black ; dress, black jacket and dress, black turban hat. Carries a male child, age about 12 months, light hair. Both much addicted to drink, and likely to be found at common lodging- houses, furnished rooms, or unions. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Court House, Exeter. ESSEX. 15.— Grays ( County).— For stealing, at Chadwell St. Mary, 15th inst.— A gentleman's silver English lever watch, open face, No. A143939, gold albert, small curb pattern, attached; a lady's open face silver watch, chased back, No. A213505 ; and a gold all eit chain, large square links, with blue seal attached — WILLIAM WALLER, age about 18, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair and small moustache dark, scar on right cheek, human figures tattooed on arms; dress, light tweed suit, Welling- ton boots, low hard felt hat. A native of 40, Bush- road, Lower- road, Deptford. Travels the country with a piebald pony and cart, selling toys and small earthenware. Wan ant. issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. FIFESHIRE. 10.— Cupar ( County).— Portrait and description of JUUAMADALENA SULLIVAN, or DENNIS- TON, whoso apprehension is sought for deserting and exposing a female child, age about 3 months, in September, 1891— age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., long light hair, eyes blue, wants whole or part of forefinger supposed left hand, speaks with English accent. She is, or is said to be, the wife of William Denniston, abrushmaker and Army Reserve man. The child was said to have been born either - / - '" in Queen Charlotte's or Magdalene Hospital, Maryle- bone, London. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Bremner, Cupar. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 17.— Swansea ( Borough).— For shop breaking— TWO MEN, ( 1st) age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, small light moustache ; dress, dark brown suit, bowler hat. Goes by the name of " Cockney ;" ( 2nd) supposed " Tommy Brock," age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and monstache dark, black clothes and bowler hat. Both are French polishers, and one carries a frail. They are accompanied by a boy, age about 14, the son of Brock, who is a very good dancer, and may be found dancing and singing in public houses. A third man, who was in their company, is in custody, and part of the stolen property recovered. Were traced to Skewen on 14th inst. Information to Chief Constable Colquhoun, Swansea. HAMPSHIRE. 18. — Aldershot ( County). — For stealing, 18th ult., a bicycle ( recovered at Bath)— ED WD. GIBSON, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion dark or sallow, hair dark and thick, eyes dark. Stated he was a private detective and engaged in a divorce case. Has the appearance of a servant or footman. ( See Case No. 23, 8th inst.). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brinson, Aldershot. 19.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For larceny— HENRY CHANDLER alias A. G. CHARLES, age about 19, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion ruddy, hair dark, no whiskers or moustache; dress, double- breasted dark blue serge jacket and vest, large check trousers, black or brown hard felt hat, white collar turned down at points and blue necktie, old blucher boots with piece of leather nailed across sole of each boot. Absconded 21st inst. Information to Ciiief Constable Cosser, Ports- mouth. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 20.— St. NeotS ( County). — For embezzling £ 160— WILLIAM ASHLEY, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair ( inclined to grey) and eyes dark, full face, short neck, black moustache, no beard, irregular front teeth, which he is in the habit of hiding with his hand when laughing, red mark like ring- worm on right temple, partly extending into the hair, walks erect with a short quick step. A commission agent or clerk. May endeavour to emigrate to the Colonies, or seek employment as a clerk, insurance agent, or commercial traveller. Has friends and relatives in London. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Copping, St. Neots. 21. — maintain KENT. Dover ( Borough). his two For neglecting to children — ETHELBERT HORACE KEMP, ape 41, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair, and moustache ( turning grey) dark, clean shaved. A flyman ; native of Ramsgate. Warrant issued. Information to Supfc. Sanders, Dover. 22.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings about £ 10 in gold and silver— JOHN HENRY JAMES, a fireman, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion very dark, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes brown, is rather hard of hearing, and usually wears wool in his ears ; dress, dark blue overcoat with velvet collar, " P. & O. " cap with shiny peak, wears a gold stud in neckband of shirt but no collar. Has been several trips abroad in the " Oruba." Left behind 3 sailors' and firemen's Union Cards, with address, 5 Park Gate- cottages, St. Michael's, Bristol. Is a native of Bristol, where he has been twice convicted for fraud and once for larceny ; on the last occasion ( 1884) being sentenced to 5 years penal servitude. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, Gravesend. £ 2 REWARD. 23.— Margate ( Borough).— For stealing, 15th inst.— A diamond Referee pattern safety bicycle, 28- in. wheels, 1- in. red rubber solid tyres to both, wheels, southern patent cranks ( bent to escape the- chain and bottom stay), ball pattern plain pedals, rather worn ; cranks, handle- bars and pillar plated down to lamp bracket, other parts black, nearly, new, no caps to oil- holes in either wheel— A MAN, who gave the name of Collins, age about 21, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, no whiskers or moustache, smart appearance; dress, short black coat, grey trousers, hard felt hat. The above reward will bo paid by Mr. R. Mitchell, Cycle Stores, 21, Marine Drive, Margate, for the apprehension and conviction of the thief and recovery of the property. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Margate. LANARKSHIRE. 21.— Glasgow ( City). — For embezzling £ 85, the monies of the United Society of Brushmakers — JAMES LAWTHER, or LOWTHER, abrush- maker, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 5^ or 6 in., hair dark, moustache brown ; dress, supposed black cord jacket and vest, dark tweed trousers, black felt hat. An Irishman. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Boyd, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 25.— Bolton ( County). — For abducting Mary Ford, age 15, of Farnworth, with whom he is sup- posed to be cohabiting— PATRICK CLARKE, alias PADDY CLARKE, age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., stoutish build, complexion fresh, round face, hair sandy, eyes brown. A native of Farnworth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Baxendale, Bolton. 26.— Bury ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee SAMUEL SPENCER' PERCIVAL, alias SAMUEL PERCIVAL and ARTHUR KAY BROWN, Office No. 42305, age 49, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, bald top of head, scar right side and centre of forehead, mole inside right forearm. Sentenced at Manchester, llth December, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for embezzlement. 7208. Supervisee JAMES MORRIS, Office No. 423C0, age 28, height 5 ft. in , complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes brown, scars left side forehead, outside corner of left eye, on left cheek, left side of mouth and front of right shoulder ( large), mole back of left shoulder, and each side of right forearm, 2 blue dots outside left forearm. Sentenced at Sal- ford, 6th July, 1891, to 6 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. 1906. Information to Supt. Noblett, Bury. 27.— Burnley ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee ELLEN ANN ROBINSON, alias ELEANOR ANN LUCAS, Office No. 37017, age 29, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes grey, scars left side forehead, nose, inside right arm and left hand. A prostitute; native of Kendal. Sentenced at Preston, 29th June, 1887, to 18 months liard labour and 4 years police super- vision for larceny ( person). Information to the Chief Constable, Burnley. LINCOLNSHIRE. 28.— Grimsby ( County).— For stealing £ 9 at Cleethorpe, 18th inst.— CHARLES FREDERICK FRIDAY, APRIL LF>, 1892. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 221 POOLE, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, freckled face, hair ( inclined to curl) ginger, supposed parted in centre, slight light moustache, no whiskers ; dress, dirty check suit, may be wearing a light- coloured vest. A native of Lincolnshire. Has served in the 1st Lincoln Regiment. Since committing the larceny lie has spent money freely . amongst soldiers at Lincoln and Aldershot. He was at the latter place on 21st inst. Has a brother residing at Reading. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stennett, Grimsby. NORTHUMBERLAND. 29.— Newcastle- upon- Tyne ( City). — For arrears of bastardy— WILLIAM TURNER, age 35, height 5 ft. to 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, clean shaved. Was formerly a jockey, and is well known amongst jockeys and racing sharps. A native of Newcastle- upon- Tyne. Warrant issued. 30.— Newcastle- on- Tyne ( City).— For fail- ing to report— License Holder JOHN ANDER- SON, alias COLIN McKENZIE, Office No. 37* 29, age 25, height 5 ft. 2^ in., complexion fresh ( freckled), hair reddish brown, eyes blue, L. PENNY on left and D. W. W. J. C. E. D. on right forearm, left forefinger has been broken. Sentenced at Glasgow, 25th June, 1885, to 5 years penal servitude for robbery. Licensed 8th March, 1892. Information to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- on- Tyne. SUSSEX ( EAST). 31.— Hove ( Town).— For obtaining £ 9 5s., on 14th inst., by means of false cheques on the London and South Western Bank, Finsbury Pavement— J. HITCHINGS, a draper's assistant, age abouf 35, height about 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, square shoulders, pomplexion dark, full face, hair ( cut short) dark brown, clean shaved; dress, dark brown rough tweed suit, yachting cap. Io fond of betting, and may be found in the company of betting men. Warrant issued. Information to Major Tee van, Chief Constable, Hove. 32.— East Grin stead ( County).— For stealing, at Three Bridges, 1 9th inst.— A silver English lever hunting watch, No. 106093, makers " J. Harris & Sons, London and Manchester," and a leather bag, containing 19s. 6d.— MARY HILLS, alias MARY TIDY, age about 40, height 5 ft., complexion sallow, hair turning grey, eyes grey ; dress, dark dress, black jacket, red plaid shawl, black hat trimmed with red. Native of Horsham. Tramps the country, and lodges at low lodging- houses. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Berry, East Grinstead. £ 20 REWARD. 33.— Hastings ( Borough).— For stealing £ 700, in November, 1890— THOMAS JAMES TURNER, age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 7 or. S in., complexion fair, hair ( inclined to curl)), and moustache light, near- sighted, wears glasses when reading or writing; dress, mixture tweed suit, low- crowned hat. A banker's clerk ; native of Horsham, Sussex. Absconded from Hastings 12th inst. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Messrs. Jones & Glenister, solicitors, Hastings, to any person giving such information as may lead to his arrest within 3 months. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hast- ings. SUSSEX ( WEST). 3i.— Steyning ( County).— For larceny from hotels— GEO. SHIRLEY, age about 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, small light mous- tache ( if any), good- looking and of gentlemanly appearance; dress, light brown or grey jacket, open vest, black striped shirt front, white silk necktie, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Byrne, Steyning. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. ESSEX. WARWICKSHIRE 35.— Birmingham ( City).— For embezzling £ 5 12s. 6d„ 19th inst.— THOMAS GLOVER, age 49, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair, moustache, and tuft on chin light ( inclined to be sandy), eyes blue; dress, light coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, black billycock hat.
