ICK GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. - 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. < 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person berequiredto be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments mutt be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond 8f Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cms, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in Btrict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on . application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It ia particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the . circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing • delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering 41 reward for the discovery of property or the detection of . crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, . or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. " 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. l.— C. O. ( Convict Supervision Depart- ment).— Woodcut ' portrait and description of LicenseHolder HENRY JAMES SHARPE, Office No. 41785, " whose apprehension ib sought for forging a certificate of character— Age 42, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair black ( turning grey), eyes biown, scar under left eye, a tooth deficient in right lower jaw ; dress, brown overcoat, stand- np cjllar, striped trousers, high silk hat. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 12th Septembar, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude for bigamy, after previous convictions of fraud and embezzlement. Licensed 22nd Ausr.. o > 1891. A solicitor's clerk, and may seek employ- ment as such with forged characters. He is a native of Grantham, and is known at High Wycombe. Warrant issued. 2.— C. O. ( Convict Supervision Depart- ment).— Woodcut portrait and description of License Holder WILLIAM CLARK, alias CHAS DUNDAS, FRANCIS HARLEY, and JAMES HARLEY, Office No. 42459, whose apprehension is sought for stealing from his lodgings, 22nd inst., a gentlemen's double- breasted blue cloth overcoat, lined marone Scotch plaid, sleeves lined with marone silk— Age 53, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, beard and whiskers dark brown, turning grey, eyes grey, prominent nose, dark spots on eyes and bottom lip, as if from an explosion ; dress, black morning coat and vest ( bound broad braid), grey striped trousers, high silk hat or c. ip with peak; shabby- genteel appearance. Sentenced at Lewes, 12th March, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude for fraud at Hastings, after previous convictions at Winchester, Southampton, and Reading. Licensed 15th nit. He describes himself as a civil engineer. 3.— B Division.— For not surrendering to his bail to answer a charge of felony— GEORGE KING, late of 47, St. Oswald's- road, Earl's- conrt, Kensington, age 47, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light, blotchy face; dress, dark melton overcoat, light check jacket suit, high silk hat. Warrant issued. 4. — G Division. — CHARLES EVELYN SMITH, Case No. 3, 19th ult., uttered two cheques on the London and Suburban Bank ( Hackney Branch), at Cheltenham, on 12th ult. He is said to have a number of similar cheques in his possession, and is likely to pass them off upon jewellers and pawn- brokers in provincial towns. He has his chin shaved, and is not wearing his glasses. ( See also Case No. 13). 5.— X Division.— For stealing, 15th ult., a grey she- donkey; a set of brass- mouuted harness, D. H. on blinkers; and a costermonger's barrow, painted yellow, picked out red, " D. Howell, 40, Tobin- street, Notting- hill," cut in side- rails and wheels— THOMAS DONNELLY, age 32, height 5 ft, complexion and hair dark, eyes hazel, thick full neck, knock- kneed, legs deformed; travels the country with organ on donkey- barrow; usually dressed in white cotton jacket, and black cloth cap with peak. The following is the description of THREE MEN stiBpected:— 1st, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., full dark beard and moustache, leans forward when walking, wore a dark overcoat, of respectable appearance; 2nd, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., clean shaved, clear fresh complexion; 3rd, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., clear fresh complexion, may have light moustache. Nos. 2 and 3 were of smart appearance, and spoke with cockney accent. The above reward (£ 100 for such information as will lead to the recovery of the property, or in pro portion to the amount recovered, and £ 50 for the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves) will be paid by Mrs. Turner, Poynton Towers, near Stockport. KENT. 41.— Folkestone ( Borough).— 13th ult. — A lady's small gold ring, set with 12 small blue stones ; and a long gold watch key, shape of a pencil, red stone on top. 15th ult.— A black silk umbrella, dark mahogany crooked handle ; a black silk umbrella, with greyish coloured horn handle, " Revd. A. J. Palmer, Folkestone " engraved on silver band ; a white silk wrapper; and a pair of dark check gloves, palms and fingers half covered with black leather. LANCASHIRE. 42.— Ormskirk ( County).— Between 1st and 29th nit., from an hotel, 16 pyramid billiard balls— Supposed by a MAN, who represented himself as a brewer's traveller, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, greyish moustache, eyes blue; dress, brown cloth overcoat ( much frayed about button- holes), dark cloth suit, stand- up collar, with turned - down points, blueish necktie, brown felt hat, carried a small brown leather handbag. Jervis, Ormskirk. £ 10 REWARD. 43.— Rochdale ( County).— Between 13th and 17th ult., at Shaw, a diamond brooch, [ with gold frame covered with diamonds, and a very large diamond in centre of shield. The above reward will be'paid by Mr. A. Whyte, hension and conviction of the thief and recovery of the brooch. Information to Supt. Heywood, Roshdale. 44.— Bootle ( Borough).— 28th ult., by house- breaking, a gentleman's small silver watch ( supposed, lever), white dial, gold hands, open face, long silver guard, link pattern, attached ; a gentleman's gold ring with white stone; a gold ring with quantity of hair enclosed and covered with glass ; a small- gold locket with photo of female on each side ; a plaited hair bracelet, 4 in. long, mounted with goldr photo of lady thereon, gold clasp ; a gold cameo- brooch, bearing head and bust of female; a gold brooch with topaz stone ; a gold brooch with glass- in centre, row of pearls around glass ; a large silver brooch representing a thistle, green round edge; a large silver pencil- case ; a small gold telescope; a gentleman's gold breast pin; a gold breast pin, snake pattern; a silver necklet, large links con- nected with small ones; and a silver brooch with flowers and birds engraved thereon. LEICESTERSHIRE. 45.— Leicester ( Borough).— Between 22nd and 24th ult.— A gold brooch, set with numerous] small pearls; a silver vinaigrette box, chased, sponge inside; a lady's gold ring, set with four turquoises, claw setting ; an African gold ring, hag the signs of the zodiac embossed thereon ; and a gold bracelet, curb pattern, closely made, snap fastening, fine gold chain attached. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 46. — Northampton ( County).— About 16th ult., by housebreaking, at Yardley, Hastings— 1 very old- fashioned silver verge watch, open face, thick cases, swivel broken; 1 gold brooch, green stone in centre ; 1 gold brooch, plain, opens in front to admit hair; 2 jet brooches, one shape of knob ; 2 jet brooches, imitation of set; 1 gold wedding ring ; 1 silver pencil case. SUSSEX ( EAST). 47.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— Between 24th and 26th nit.— a French walnut jewel case, 9 in. square, 4 in. deep, lined rose colour quilted silk, containing 1 silver locket, oval shape, chased front,, plain back, with silver cable pattern chain attached ; 1 pair of round silver earrings; 1 lady's small silver albert chain, close pattern ; 1 square silver brooch, inlaid with brilliants; 1 tortoiseshell cross, about 4 in. long, inlaid with gold ; 1 pair of pear- shaped tortoiseshell earrings; 1 short gold chain, small square links with gold pendant, set small red stone,- attached; 1 pair of small gold ball- shaped earrings, covered with filigree work ; 1 pair of agate acorn- shaped earrings, mounted in gold ; 1 plain gold band ring, set 2 emeralds and 1 biilliant; 1 old- fashioned square gold brooch, hair in centre with pearls around ; 1 chased Greek silver bracelet; I engraved silver bracelet, design birds and flowers. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 5 sefc with lapis lazuli stone; 2 brooches of mauve enamelled flower spray ( French) ; 1 small brooch, enamel and ivory Indian temple, set in gold; 1 filigree gold rose broooh, with eardrops to match; 1 large old- fashioned gold brooch, enamelled dolphin in centre, cut rubies at the corners, set in fancy gold; 1 lozenge- shaped gold brooch, with pearls in line across the centre ; 1 Derbyshire spar flower brooch, set in gold ; 1 gold and pearl bar brooch ; 1 gold moonstone fly brooch; 1 large silver coin brooch, Edward VI.; 1 small silver brooch, painted head of cat in centre; L pair diamond cluster earrings ; 1 old- fashioned diamond pin, sat like forget- me- not; 1 gold lace pin with 5 pearls ; 1 necklace, 3 strings of gold beads; 3 Russian leather purses, containing small amounts ; 1 small silver locket; 1 large topaz ring, with pearls set in old gold; set of 3 double horse- shoe gipsy pins in case ; several crystal ornaments for the hair, set in gold and silver ; 2 large lace pins of cut crystal, set in gold and blue enamel ( French); 1 gold gipsy pin, pearl crescent. Many of the articles are in cases bearing the names of local jewellers. Larcenies from bedrooms were recently committed, about the same time in the evening, at Blackpool, Southport, and Scarborough. In the Southport case, a man of the following description was seen crawling from under the bed, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark swarthy, hair black, no whiskers, heavy long dark moustache, thin features ; dressed in dark clothes, long overcoat, and dark felt hat. WILTSH IRE. 49. — Chippenham ( County). — 27th ult., at Christian Malford, a small gold brooch, horse- shoe pattern with bar, set with diamonds and rubies; a gentleman's gold pin; a flannel cricketing jacket with pearl buttons; also £ 3 in cash. Information to Supt. Barrett, Chippenham. YORKSHIRE ( NORTH RIDING). 50.— Scarborough ( Borough).— 19th ult. — A gold brooch, set with carbnncle ; a moonstone brooch, with face and circle of crystals ; a gold brooch, long chain pattern ; a gold bracelet, set with diamonds and sapphires ; a gold chain bracelet, cable pattern, locket with turquoise attached ; a gold chain bracelet, locket set with carbuncle attached ; 2 gold bangles, one plain, the other with moonstone heart set in brilliants; a large gold locket, with monogram E. B. thereon, containing photo of a man and some grey hair; a small round gold locket, engraved; a silver snake bangle ; an Indian silver bangle, with pair of small silver opera- glasses attached; a silver brooch, three bars and a horse- shoe; 6 silver bangles with trinkets and coins, threepenny- pieces and Indian coins with initials as follows— L. L.; M. F.; B. H.; Min. Auntie; E. F.; A. G. ; E. A.; M. A. ; and A. L.; a steel case, containing 28 sixpences ; a purse, con- taining half- sovereign and about 10s. in silver; a lady's silver keyless half- hunter Swiss lever watch, No. 11246, inner glass broken.
