POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1892. VOL. IX., No. 846. REGULATIONS. - 1. , All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. • 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. • 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. • 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. tf. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to le apprehended or of stolen property tear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to le inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicfi may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must le in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, ly cheque, crossed " Drummond If Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. An inventor has patented a composi- tion for taking casts of footprints in any soft ground, and Government has acquired the right to use this invention in any part of the United Kingdom. It is anticipated that it will prove of value occasionally in criminal cases, especially in rural districts, and any Police Force that wishes to have particulars of it, is invited to apply to the Home Office confidentially for that purpose. ( This intimation is given by desire of the Secretary of State.— Ed.). APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. l.— C. O. ( Convict Supervision Depart- ment).— Woodcut portrait and description of Supervisee FRANK PAGE, alias CHAS. WM. ELLIOT, CHAS. WM. CLARKE, THOS. FIELD, CHAS. WM. FOX. CHAS. WM. DAT, CHAS. WOODS, CHAS. ELLIOTT, and BOSS ELLIOTT, Office No. 38843, whose apprehension is sought for failing to report since February, 1890, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes grey, cast in left eye, scrofula scars round throat. Sentenced at Liverpool, 20th Feb- ruary, 1880, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for larceny ( person), and at Middlesex Sessions, 5th January, 1885, to 5 years penal servitude for warehousebreaking. This man is an expert housebreaker, and was associated with City Road burglars, convicted at Central Criminal Court, 20th ult., and men now in custody at Liverpool for housebreaking. When last seen had beard and whiskers shaved. Warrant issued. 2. — G Division.— Woodcut portrait and de- scription of Expiree CHARLES EVELYN SMITH, alias GRIFFITHS, Office No. 37714, an insurance agent, late of 181, Ball's Pond- road, and 18, Hert- ford- road, Dalston, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining money by means of a worthless cheque on the London and Suburban Bank ( Mare- street, Hackney, Branch), age 40, height 6 ft. i in., com- plexion fresh, hair, moustache and goatee light ( curly), well built and inclined to be corpulent, of good appearance and address, very near- sighted, . and wears a pair of gold- rim eye- glasses; invariably wears a square- top hat ( pony written inside), and tight- fitting trousers. Was convicted at the Old Bailey, in September, 1835, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude for defrauding the National Lifeboat Association. May be wanted for commit- ting bigamous marriages through advertisements in the matrimonial columns of the " People " news- paper. A warrant is now at Dalston Police Court for desertion of one of his victims, from whom he obtained a large sum of money. He usually has his letters addressed to newsagents and stationers in name of Charles Griffiths. Has relatives in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Dublin. Warrant issued. 3.— D Division.— Woodcut portrait and de- scription of WILLIAM GIOVANNI IMPERIALI, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining, by false pretences, on 14th Dec. last, a brilliant collet necklace, with eleven pendants, composed of coloured stones set with diamonds:— age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., com 4 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. Warrant issued. — J Division.— For stealing, 22nd ult., a chestnut gelding, 15 hands 2 in., aged, white blaze down face, 3 feet white, in good condition; a set of brass- mounted harness; a dog- cart, painted black, back panel cracked, wheels picked out red, " Robinson, Cheshunt," on the cap of one wheel; a mat; and a waterproof apron— A man who gave the name of COLLIE, a » e 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion, hair ( cut short) and moustache dark ; dress, dark blue overcoat, velvet collar, brown felt hat. Appearance of a clerk. Has been traced through Waltham Abbey to Epping. 5.^ V Division.— For deserting his child— JOHN WIMBLES, alias HANDS, age 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, one leg ( supposed right) deformed, upon which he wears a thick cork soled boot; dress, dark coat and vest, tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, sometimes wears eyeglasses. A licensed pedlar, and hawks combs, brushes, & c. Has a sister residing at Poulson- place, Middlesbrook- street, Winchester, where he may go. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BRECONSHIRE 6.— Brynmawr( County).— For larceny ( lodger) cn or about 12th December last-— A man, who gave the name of THOMAS JONES, a labourer, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved; dress, brown plaid suit, lace boots, black cap with peak. Information to Supt. Winterson, Brynmawr. ESSEX. 7.— Epping ( County).— For embezzling£ 3 12s. at Lamborne, 30th September last— ALBERT FORD- HAM, age 27, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, hair and slight monstache light, eyes blue, short neck, broad shoulders, rather flat chest, walks erect, but is rather awkward about the feet; dress, light tweed jacket and vest, brownish cloth trousers, light cap, heavy lace boots, shabby. Was employed, about nine months ago, as horseman by Messrs. Marshall & Snellgrove, Oxford- street. Supposed native of Great Chesterford, Essex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Womack, Epping. HERTFORDSHIRE. 8.— Hitchin ( Countxj).— For burglary, 29th ult. — GEORGE JACOBS, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, full face, hair black, slight mous- tache, dark, few scanty whiskers, eyes hazel, nose rather flat; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark trousers, black hard felt hat, dirty collar and front, dark tie— all old. An engineer's labourer; native of Hitchin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitchin. LANARKSHIRE. 9-— Glasgow ( City). — For stealing £ 60 from his employers, the Albion Albuminising Company, Glasgow— JAMES HENDERSON, age about 18, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair dark, no whiskers or moust'che, short legs, usually keeps his hands in his poc< ets when walking, and walks with short quick steps; dress supposed dark brown overcoat, dark jacket suit, black felt hat. A native of Glas- gow, and lately resided at 91, Gloucester- street. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Boyd, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 10.— Bolton ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee JOHN THOMAS PRICE, Otncj No. 42363, age 25. height 5 ft. 4i in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes black, lost 3rd left tinger- nail, anchor outside right forearm. Sentenced at Salford, 6th July, 1891. to 6 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for warehouse- breaking. Information to Snpt. Baxendale, Bolton. 11. — Leigh ( County). — For stealing, at Atherton, 30th ult., a black worsted vest without collar, lined with red and black striped sateen; a cotton shirt, red and white stripes, man's size; a pair of knitted drab stockings, man's size, and a brown and white plaid cap with peak— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair dark, moustache sandy; dressed in stolen clothing, black worsted jacket, with braid on sleeves and collar, old dirty tweed trousers, and clogs far worn. A collier. 12.— Leigh ( County).— For stealing, at Pouston, 30th ult., a boy's brown tweed overcoat, 4 pockets outside, 4 buttons ( 3 black and 1 grey) far worn— A YOUTH, age 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair dark ; dress, twesd overcoat, dark trousers, plaid cap, strong lace boots. A labourer. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 13.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report— License Holder MARY KELLY, alias CATHERINE KELLY, BRIDGET O'BRIAN, MARY O'HARA, CATHERINE FLYNN, CATHERINE McFAR- LANE, and MARY C. JOHNSON ( real name, FLYNN), Office No. 41933, age 47, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes brown, scar over left eye, right of nock, and burn scar right of face. Sentenced at Shrewsbury, 3rd Jauuary, 1887, to 7 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated 2nd October, 1891. D N 167.— Supervisee ELLEN HOLGATE, alias WINSTANLEY, Office No. 33906, age 52, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes blue, spot left side of neck. Sentenced at Birkenhead, 18th April, 1887, to 6 months imprisonment and 5 years police super- vision for larceny. Is also wanted for larceny ( lodger). Information to the Chief Supt., Detective Depart- ment, Liverpool. 14. — Liverpool ( City). — For attempting to steal from the person, and failing to surrender to his recognizance, 22nd ult.— A man, who gave the name of CHARLES JAMES HUMPHREYS, or BARNES, age 44, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair black ( inclined to curl), slight moustache and side whiskers, eyes( weak) brown, wore spectacles, thin wrinkled face ; dress, dark brown tweed inverness, deep cape, black worsted coat, watered silk vest. For the past two months he has fre- quented sale3 of furniture held at private houses, pretending to buy on commission. Information to Chief Supt. Williams, Liverpool. 15.— Liverpool ( City).— Supervisee ROBERT PRICE, Office No. 23128, Case 26, 31st July last, not now wanted. 16. — Salford ( Borough). — For housebreaking, 26th ult., and stealing a brown ribbed cloth shooting coat, brown Italian cloth lining, usual pockets, " Wall, Corporation Street, Manchester," on tab; vest to match; a gentleman's silver lever watch, capped and jewelled, silver dial, gold figures, hands miss- ing, but in going order, heavy cases, far worn, No. 31491; a silver geneva lever watch, No. 12853; a lady's silver geneva watch, No. 27585 ; a silver albert guard, curb pattern, with a silver Italian coin bearing the head of Pope Pius IX., dated 1866 on one side, and 1 Lira on other side, as appendage; a man's black billycock hat, size 7, " Pellett, Cross Street, Manchester," inside— A MAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and eyes, dark; slight monstache, dark; may bear marks of injuries inflicted upon him before making his escape; dress, brown ribbed cloth coat and vest, dark trousers, and black felt hat. Information to Supt. Hallam, Salford. LEICESTERSHIRE. 17.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd inst — 1 broad gold bracelet, 18- carat, clasp fastening, set with 5 diamonds ; 1 plain gold bracelet, fancy filigree work on edges, clasp fastening ; 1 long gold brooch, small diamond in centre, and one at each end, surrounded by pearls forming a cluster, small corah on bar between each cluster ; 1 round plain gold brooch, pearl in centre, small knobs round edge, box and glass at back for photo, safety catch for pin; 1 broad gold mourning ring, 18- carat, half- hoop, black enamel, set with 5 pearls, " Nellie" engraved inside; 1 plain gold ring, 18- carat, set with 5 turquoises graduated ; 1 gold ring, 15- carat, square piece of gold on top, small diamond in centre and coral in each corner; 6 small silver teaspoons, chased edges ; 2 silver forks ( one large, the other small), " M. J. B." engraved thereon; 1 long sable fur cape, hooks down front; and £ 13 gold— KATE WHITEHEAD, alias ELLEN and MAUD NEW- TON, and CONNOR, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair ( frizzy) light, eyes blue, rather prominent cheekbones, two or three upper front teeth deficient, thin lips, mouth rather sunken ; dress, long black jacket with black astrachan trim- ming, light plaid skirt, large black felt hat, trimmed large black feather, small tips behind, and black ribbon. She has been previously convicted at Northampton, Paisley, and Glasgow. Has been in several homes in different parts of the country. It is requested that inquiry be made at servants' registry offices, theatres, music halls, & c., she having stated her intention of going on the stage. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. MIDLOTHIAN. 18. — Edinburgh ( County). — For fraud — GEORGE BRUCE, alias ROBERTSON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache brown, beard turning grey, eyes hazel, full broad forehead, scar on right side, scar ( high) on left brow, had suppurating sore on instep of right foot; dressed, when he absconded, on 9th ult., in shabby brownish coloured suit and single- peaked tweed cap or black hard felt hat. A labour sr; native of Forfarshire. Speaks with strong north country accent. Has nine previous convictions against him. His last sentence of 18 months, for fraud, in Renfrewshire, expired on 28th July, 1891. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Colonel Borthwick, Chief Con- stable, County Buildings, Edinburgh. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 19.— Northampton ( County). — For stealing the sum of £ 11 10s. on 24th ult.— MARK SMITH, a stableman, age about 36, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, slightly freckled, hair dark brown, slight sandy moustache, eyes dark, cut straight across lip, lost one or two upper teeth left side, speaks with north country accent; dress, dark blue melton overcoat with velvet collar, dark serge jacket and vest, dark check trousers, lace boots, brown hard felt hat. Carried a canvas bag about 2 ft. long and 18 in. wide. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Alexander, Constabulary Office, Northampton. OXFORDSHIRE. 20.— Watlington ( County).— For housebreak- ing at Shillingford, 18th ult., and stealing a dark cloth overcoat; a black russell cord coat; a black vest and pair of trousers ; and a pair of men's light boots, with tips on heels ; about 20 old silver and copper coins, principally 2- penny and 3- penny pieces— EDWARD BERRY, age 30, looks older,, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, moustache, and whiskers dark ; is addicted to drink; dressed in stolen clothes, and light brown hard felt hat. A bricklayer ; native of Dorchester, Oxon. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oakley, Watlington. SOMERSETSHIRE. 21.— Bath ( dty).— For stealing a quantity of lead from a dwelling house— ALBERT FRY, age 16, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes hazel; dress, light cloth jacket, dark cloth trousers, light cloth cap with peak, and a pair of female's side- spring boots-— all much worn.— CORNELIUS DEARY, age 15, height 5 ft. L in.,, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress, light brown suit ( trousers much too short), cloth cap with two peaks— all much worn. Absconded 26th ult. These lads are supposed to be tramping the country, and may apply for relief at police stations or workhouses. Information to Lieut- Colonel Gwyn, Bath. SUSSEX. 22.— Hastings ( Borough).— For embezzlement — DAVID ELDRIDGE, age 37, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair ( parted in middle) black, slight moustache and eyes dark, has some white specks on right ear; dress, black overcoat, black coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, low round- crowned black hat. A collector; native of St. Leonards- on- Sea. Warrant issued. - Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings. RID AY, FEBRUARY 5, 1892 T H E POLICE GAZETTE 3 WORCESTERSHIRE. 23. — Stourbridge ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences, on 18th ult.— SIDNEY GROVE, age 22, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, hair supposed light; dress, check suit, hard black hat. A grocer's assistant; native of Brierly Hill, Staffordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wheeler, Stourbridge. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 24.— G Division.— Remanded till 5th inst., for committing frauds, for the past 12 months, in the name of the Aluminium Electric Company, 11, Great Sutton - street, Clerkenwell, The Clinton Electric Company, and The Marson Battery Com- pany, 29, Lloyd- row, Clerkenwell— FREDERICK WILLIAM MASON, age 22, height 5 ft. in., complexion, hair and eyes dark ; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey tweed trousers, hard felt hat. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland, S. W. DEVONSHIRE. 25.— Honiton ( County). — Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, for indecent assault— GEORGE DAWSON, alias BEATON, age about 21, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, liair brown, eyes blue, anchor tattooed left arm, lost top of fore- finger right hand ; dress, black cloth coat, light blue trousers, with pair of brown mixture cloth under- neath, old striped shirt, old pair of army boots ( Wellingtons), and dark cloth cap. States he is a stoker in the merchant service, and native of Lon- don. Information to Supt. De Sclimid, Honiton. coat and vest, brown trousers, light- coloured double peaked cap. A native of Southend, Surrey — ALBERT KING, age 21 ( looks 25), height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) dark brown, eyes dark, sharp features, right hand has been injured, forefinger amputated, AJL tattooed on left arm ; dress, old brown tweed suit, hard round black hat. A painter, native of Mare - street, Hackney — ROBERT BARKER, age 24. height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion dark, hair black ( curly in front), eyes dark, " Addy " and star tattooed on left arm ; dress, black jacket, old tweed trousers, black cheese- cutter cap. A shoemaker ; native of Norwich. Has been in the Army ( 9th Regiment). Is a good singer. His parents reside at No. 22|, Clonster - street, Hackney. These men tramp the country singing songs in public houses. From their manner and conversation they are expert till thieves. After their conviction they boasted of having robbed several shops in their travels ( one a butcher's shop of £ 42). They pretend to know Brighton, Worthing, & c., well; they came to Watton by way of Bury St. Edmunds, where they are strongly suspected of committing a till robbery. Information to Supt. WILTSHIRE. 32.— Tisbury ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Wilts Assizes for arson — GEORGE COLLINS, age 43, height 5 ft. in., complexion pale, hair dark, eyes grey; dress, dark cloth jacket, double- breasted vest, with large bone buttons, mole- skin trousers, brown hard felt hat, all much worn. Gave his address as Chatham, and stated he had been tramping the country for the last three years. Information to Supt. Bull, Tisbury. GLOUCESTERSH IRE. 26.— Stroud ( County).— Committed for trial, at the next Gloucester Assizes, ' for larceny ( person)— GEORGE HURD, age 29, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, star tattooed right forearm, flag left forearm ; dress, drab jacket, black and light striped vest, small cord trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A native of Horse Hay, Shropshire. Information to Supt. Pliilpott, Stroud. MERIONETHSHIRE. 27.— Dolgelley ( County).— Committed for trial at the next County Assizes for obtaining money by false pretences ( see Case No. 30, 22nd ult.)— HENRY STANLEY, alias HENRY TAYLOR, HENRY WILLIAMS, and EDURDS, age 49, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion swarthy, hair and moustache dark ( turning grey), bald spot on ciown of head ; tattoo mark prominent on left hand ; dress, dark clothes, turning shabby. Appears to be well acquainted with Somersetshire and Gloucestershire. Was apprehended at Swindon, Wilts, on 25tli ult. Information to Supt. Hughes, Dolgelley. NORFOLK. 28.— East Harling ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Norwich Assizes, for burglary ( see Case No. 24, 8th ult.)— WILLIAM ROBINSON, age 37, height 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair, whiskers, moustache, and eyes dark, very piercing eyes which he rolls when . speaking, long neck with large gullet, springing gait, of gipsy appearance ; dress, dark tweed coat, light trousers, hard black bat or cap with peak. This man is a notorious burglar, and well known at Erith, Reading, and at most brickyards in England. Has tramped the country for some time past. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Information to Supt. M. Prison, Edinburgh, on a charge of fraud, committed in the month of September last— JAMES ALFRED ERNEST RIDDELL, alias JAMES RIDDELL, J. HAMILTON, ERNEST HAIG, and E. A. HAIG, age 34, height 5 ft. in. without shoes, slight build, complexion pale, hair brown, strong brown moustache, eyes blue, prominent nose. His mode of operation is to call, as J. Hamilton, on hotel keepers and others, and represent that he is travelling for the publisher of the " British and Foreign Hotel Directory and Traveller's Guide," the publisher being himself under the alias at J. Alfred E. Riddell, 81, English- street, Carlisle. From letters and papers found in his possession it has been ascertained that he has visited the principal cities and towns in Scotland, England, and Ireland, especially the towns and villages in the Border couaties. He advertised in the " Westmoreland Gazette" on 6th, 13th, and 20th June; in the " Examiner," published by John Walker & Co., Warrington, on 13th, 20th, and 27th June; in the " Kendal and County News," on 27tli June— Notice to Hotel Proprietors, & c., anent " British and Foreign Hotel Directory." Also in the " Daily Scotsman " of 20th, 22nd, and 23rd June ; in the " Hawick Advertiser " of 30tli October ; and in the " Dumfries and Galloway Courier and Herald" of 30th and 31st October and 4th November, 1891, for agents and canvassers, nnder the aliases of J. Alfred E. Riddell, Ernest Haig, and E. A. Haig. He was married to Alice Mary Haig, or Isdale, on 2nd November, 1887, at 2, Park Grove- terrace, Glasgow, his address then being 1G5, Bellfield- street. Riddell and his wife appear to have been residing at the following addresses : — In June, 1888, at 41, Castle- street, Kendal; from September, 1888, to September, 1889, at 126, George- street, and 5, Craigard- road, Oban; in Dec., 1890, at 60, Donegal Pass, Belfast; from June to September, 1890, at 425, Eglinton- street, Glasgow; in December, 1890, at Borthwick Bank, Mill - street, Dunoon; in February, 1891, at 3, Queen- street, or 44, Cumber- land- street, Edinburgh ; from June to September, 1891, at 17, North Summer- street, North Circular- road, Dublin ; and from September, 1891, to present time, at 81, English- street, or 15, Henry- street, Carlisle. During the above periods Riddell seems to have been carrying on the business of a private detective in Glasgow, Oban, and Dunoon, and that of a canvasser or commission agent in Edinburgh, Dublin, and Carlisle.
