Al! announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Part iculars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. - 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15.!. per portrait, and of Is. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. • 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature ofanofficer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted i » the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicn may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or i » Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will bo forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It ia particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in ' the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of ' crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly • expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. (<£) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Polios Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— G Division. — Woodcut portrait and de- scription of CHARLES HAT BROWN, whose apprehension is sought for forgery:— age 29, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion very fair, hair light, eyes blue, thick bottom lip split in centre; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, black cloth trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Sproughton, Suffolk. Warrant issued. 2.— K Division.— For stealing, 14th inst., a photographic half- plate lens, with flange ( screw- focussing), brass cap; part of a mahogany camera, with flanges attached SPRINGTHORPE, alias HERBERTT, age 30 to 36, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion and moustache fair, eyes light blue, walks lame through corns on tops of toes; dress, black coat, light trousers, black cloth peak cap; carried a light overcoat. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yaid, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. — Biggleswade ( County). — For stealing, 20th inst.— A lady's gold guard chain ; 1 gold dress ring ( one stone deficient) ; 2 gold wedding rings; 1 small silver locket, flowered ; 1 silver- plated locket marked with horseshoe, containing photos of a man and woman; 1 silver brooch with gilt flowers there- on ( pin deficient); 1 tape measure in bone case A MAN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, slight cast in right eye; dress, dark tweed jacket, dark striped trousers and vest, black hard felt hat. He took lodgings at a private house, 18th inst., stating he was a tele- graph clerk at the railway station, and left shortly after 8 a. m., 2Cth inst. Is supposed to be identical with man described in Case No. 15, 6th inst. Information to Supt. Smith, Biggleswade. 4. — Leighton Buzzard ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HERBERT POSTLE, alias SMITH, age 24 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, eyes ( rather large) brown, oval face ; dress, black cloth suit, black hard felt hat. States he is a native of Burton- on- Trent. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Shepherd, Leighton Buzzard. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Wantage ( County). — For stealing from St. Mary's House, Wantage, 11th inst., a blue check linen frock, linen cap, and underclothing, all marked " St. M. H."— KEZIAH BOOTH, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark; dressed in stolen clothes, ulster, jacket, and hat. Also for stealing a blue check linen frock, linen cap, and underclothing, marked " St. M. H." — MARY ANN HODSON, age 19, short, complexion sallow, bright eyes; dressed in stolen clothes, ulsier, and hat. Friends reside at Brook - street, War- wick. They both left Challon Railway Station by first train, 12th inst., booking to Paddington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Wanlage. 6.— Maidenhead ( Borough). — For obtaining, on 4th inst., £ 30 by means of a forged cheque, pur- porting to be signed by J. E. Jessop and endorsed J. Clayton.— JN. CLAYTON, age 21, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, mous- tache slight, eyes hazel; dress, navy- blue overcoat, velvet collar, striped grey trousers, hard felt hat. One £ 10 Bank of England note, one £ 5 note, traced to the Bank ; No. of £ 5 notes not yet traced, C/ 65- 62172, C/ 57- 64076. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. £ 2 2s. REWARD. 7.— Reading ( Borough). — For deserting their families, leaving them chargeable to the Reading Union— CHRISTINA JOHNSON, age 32, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair dark brown, fringe on forehead, complexion fair, eyes grey. Her mother resides at Henley- on- Thames. ALFRED SLAYMAKER, alias GEORGE WILLIAMS, age 39, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, hair and moustache sandy, otherwise clean shaven, complexion fresh, eyes blue. A labourer or navvy. May seek employment on the G. W. R. Extension Works. Warrants issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Reading Union, to any person arresting either of the above. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 8.— Newport Pagnell ( County). — For larceny. 14th inst,— ARTHUR FARRER, age 25, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion and slight moustache dark; dress, dark clothes and overcoat, dark cord trousers and cap. A carpenter ; native of Risley, Bedfordshire. Is known at Rushden and North- ampton. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Pitson, Newport Pagnell. CHESHIRE. 9. — Altrincham ( County).— For stealing single- breasted drab melton chesterfield overcoat— ROBERT DRURY, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark, slight cast in one eye, blinks when talking; dress, grey tweed jacket and trousers, dark cardigan jacket, lace boots, grey cloth cap. A stableman ; native of Rotherham. W arrant issued. Information to Sup. Walker, Altrincham. DORSETSHIRE. ,10.— Wimborne ( County).— For assaulting gamekeeper, 14th inst.— GEORGE SAMMERS, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, stubby beard, ears pierced, and may bo wearing ear- rings, may have scars on head and face. A navvy; native of Yerwood, Dorset. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marsh, Wimborne. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 11-— Cheltenham ( County). — For embezzle- ment— GEORGE KING ENGLAND, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair light brown, moustache sandy, rather full eyes, stout build, round- shouldered, slightly bow- legged, and lame, tender feet, looks on the ground when walking ; is very fond of skittles and horse- racing, and may be found at race meetings. A brewer's traveller ; native of Cheltenham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. HAMPSHIRE. 12.— Bitterne ( County).— For cruelty to a horse at St. Mary Extra, on 8th ult.— JAMES SAUN- DERS, a gipsy, age about 60, height 5 ft. 8 to 10 in., hair grey; dress, long dark coat and fur cap. Travels the country with an old pony and cart, collecting rags, bones, & c., and hawking crockery, accompanied by a woman, age about 40, veiy stout and dark. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Adams, Bitterne. 13.— Winchester ( City).— For being concerned with THOMAS JONES ( Case No. 42), in stealing oil stocks, Case No. 59, 20th inst. MURPHY, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion florid, rather blotchy face, hair and very heavy moustache dark, turning grey; dress, dark blue cloth overcoat, dark tweed trousers, white shirt front, black hard felt hat; generally carries an umbrella. States he served 16 years in Royal Artillery, and claimed his discharge as a sergeant. May be found dealing with the three large oil stocks and the silver spoon, with cross on handle. 14— Winchester ( City).— For stealing from a jeweller's shop— a gold watch, which has been found pledged at Southampton — HENRY BISHOP ( supposed false), age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair and heavy moustache dark brown, speaks with an Irish accent; dress, black overcoat, dark cloth trousers, black hard felt hat. Gave his address as 16, John - street, Southampton ( false). Information to Head Constable Morton, Win- chester. 15.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For failing to surrender to his bail at Winchester Assizes, in July last, charged with falsification of accounts — FRANCIS WILLIAM MAYES, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache brown, eyes hazel; usually dresses well; late of Hill- street, Hastings, Sussex. Was a clerk in the employ of Messrs. Pickford & Co., railway carriers, and for a time manager of their branches at Dover, and subsequently at Portsmouth. His father resides at South Quay, Great Yarmouth. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 16.— Weobley ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — EDWIN PIKE, age 30, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion and hair ( short) dark, clean shaved dress, dark jacket and vest, light plaid trousers ( dirty), hard hat, and red and black woollen scarf. A collier; native of Merthyr Tydvil. Warrant issued. 17.— Weobley ( County).— For deserting his two children, leaving them chargeable to the Weobley Union— WILLIAM MITCHELL, age 40, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion pale, hair dark, mous- tache sandy, d& nsumptive- looking; dress, black jacket, dark cord trousers, grey cap with two peaks. A tramping painter ; may be found in casual wards or common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Owens, Weobley. 18.— Hereford ( Citi/).— For embezzling£ 48 10s. — CHARLES ROBERTS, age 20, height about 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., thick set, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, peculiarity about right eye, which was injured when a boy, and looks a little cross- eyed, full round face ; dress, Newmarket overcoat, brown cloth coat and vest, grey striped trousers, square- toed heavy boots, bi'own bowler hat. A grocer's assistant; native of Peterchurcli, Herefordshire. Warrant issued. 19. — Hereford ( Citg). — For embezzling £ 19 9s. 4d.— THOMAS WYLES IRWIN, age 40 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes supposed hazel; dress, check jacket and vest, dark mixture trousers, generally wears a cap, but may now be wearing a round billy- cock hat. He is a skinner by trade, and will, no doubt, seek employment at fellmongers, tanneries, etc. Is well up in buying skins, hides, etc. His mother, a widow, resides at Roby- street, Booth. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Richardson, Hereford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 20. — Bishop Stortford ( County). — For obtaining £ 5 by means of a fictitious cheque on Messrs. Molineux, Whitfield, Whitfield & Molyneux, Bankers, Lewes— H. BENTON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, mutton- chop whiskers and close clipped moustache sandy, first joint of little finger right hand deficient, little finger left hand contracted, usually wears kid gloves to hide these defects ; dress, dark grey over- coat, light tweed jacket, dark tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. This man represented to a tradesman in the town that he was going to make a new road at Bishop Stortford, and that he had a number of navvy barrows, some of which wanted repairing. He also ordered a number of stakes and straight edge. Having obtained the tradesman's confidence by giving him these orders, he enquired which was the best bank as he would have to pass his cheques through one. He then asked the tradesman if he would exchange cheques, as he ( Benton) was short of silver. The tradesman then gave him £ 5 in cash for one of his cheques, which was afterwards found to be worthless. He also takes private lodgings and leaves without paying or pays with fictitious cheques. He is very talkative and is fond of showing a couple of cards, one representing a rose, and the other a shamrock and rose, which he says he cut out. He is identical with man described in Case No. 25, 16th ulto. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tripp, Bishop Stortford. LANCASHIRE. 22.—' Bacup ( Borough). — For stealing £ 8— Supervisee ANN PILKINGTON, alias SARAH McKAY, HANNAH BROOKS, Ac., Office No. 37776, housekeeper or cotton winder, age 61, height 5 ft. 2i in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, supposed long black dolman, trimmed with black fur, and black bonnet. A native of Calcutta. She is in the habit of obtaining situations as housekeeper to working men. Is also wanted for felony at Blackburn, aud for failing to report at Accrington. Warrant issued. 23.— Bacup ( Borough).— For stealing wearing apparel, & c. — ADA CONSTABLE, alias LILY ELIZABETH BRAY, and HOWARTH, domestic servant or dressmaker, age 22, height 5 ft. 4i in., complexion fresh, hair ( fringed in front) brown, eyes grey, cut- mark corner of left eye, one upper tooth broken; dress, black jacket, with velvet and brown a^ trachan trimming, black fur tippet, black dress, lace boots, black hat, with black trimming,, and pointed at front. It is requested that special enquiry be made at all registry offices for servants. Information to Chief Constable Ilarland, Bacup. 24.— Oldham ( Borough).— License Holder ED- WARD CORR, Office No. 38840, Case No. 18, 13th inst., not now wanted. LEICESTERSHIRE. 25.— Loughborough ( County).— For stealing a rug ( recovered), 19th inst.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark ; dress, shabby blue suit with brass buttons, black cap with bright peak. Appearance of a sailor or showman. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Loughborough. 26.— South Wigston ( County).— Forobtaining money by false pretences, at Baggram Hall, on 4 th inst— HENRY RE ACE, alias HARRY REES, and EDWARD REES, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes dark, scar the size of a half- a- crown from either scald or burn on right cheek; dress, dark coat and vest, light tweed trousers, old lace boots, hard felt hat, blue necktie with white spots, and large horse- shoe pin. A groom; native of Blankley, Lincolnshire. Has been employed as second horseman, at Oakham, and as second whip to Mr. Corbet, who hunted the South Cheshire hounds. He is supposed to have been convicted at Kettering, for a similar offence, in the name of KING. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormiston, South Wigston. KENT. 21.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing a telescope, which is about 9 in. long when closed, 3 slides, brown wood bound with brass— JOHN DICKINSON, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair ( curly) dark, is consumptive, wears dark spectacles ; dress, light covert coat, brown hard felt hat, generally wore a large grey wrap, and had in his possession a red covered eider- down quilt. Says he has been a Wesleyan missionary, and will call on ministers of that denomination. Supposed native of London. Information to Supt. Sanders, Dover. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 27. — Newport ( Borough). — For stealing a- silver lever watch ( recovered), 11th inst.— RICHD. MORGAN, alias EDWIN B. PAYNE, a marine fireman, age 54, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion ruddy, hair dark, whiskers shaved; dress, blue dungaree jacket, light plaid trousers, and a cap. A native of Cinderford, Gloucestershire. Was con- victed for fraud at Usk Quarter Sessions, 22ud February, 1888, and sentenced to 21 days imprison- ment. He represents himself as a Freemason. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, New-* port. RADNORSHIRE. 28.— Rhayader ( County).— For stealing £ 22 in gold from a common lodging house, at Rhayader— A MAN, age 23 to 25, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, complexion pale, hair dark- brown, eyes hazel, round features, slightly bow- legged; dress, black morning coat, black vest and trousers, old lace boots,, black hard bowler hat. Is supposed to be a bicycle maker and native of Birmingham. He was traced to Pontrhydigroes, Cardiganshire. Information to Sergt. Jones, Rhayader. SHROPSHIRE. 29.— Bridgnorth ( County).— For stealing two geese ( recovered), at Spring- hill, Madeley, 23rd inst. RICHARD SMITH, alias DORSETT, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slender build, hair light brown, slight light moustache, no whiskers, eyes grey, two upper front teeth deficient; dress, black pilot jacket, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2t, 1891. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 grey trousers and vest, white muffler, black hard hat or cloth cap, strong lace boots. A miner or labourer; native of Madeley, Salop. This man is a thief and poacher, and will probably be found in such company, or low public- houses, and may seek employment in collieries or well- sinkings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Bridgnorth. 30.— Whitchurch ( County).— For perjury, on 23rd ult.— ALBERT WHITFIELD, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair brown ( turning grey), small sandy whiskers, eyes blue, rather round- 3houldered ; dress, supposed dark cloth suit, black hard hat, narrow brim, thin elastic- side boots. A farmer, late of Tilstock l'ark, near Whitchurch. Has a brother residing at Digbeth or Hockley, Birmingham. It is requested that enquiries may be made at shipping offices and out- bound vessels, as he may • endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edwards, Whitchurch. mole left side'of chin, abscess scar left side of neck, scar on forehead, small cut mark each side of fore- head. Sentenced at the Bradford Borough Sessions, 12th April, 1889, to 18 calendar months imprison- ment, and 3 years police supervision, for larceny. 8289. Information to the Chief Constable, Leeds. STAFFORDSHIRE. 31. — Burslem ( County). — For stealing, at Brownhills, 20th inst.— A harmonium barrel organ, French make, fixed on a perambulator, plays the tune " In the Sweet By- and- Bye," and 7 other dance tunes, handle broken and repaired by soldering— THOMAS SMITH, age 43, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair ( curly) and moustache dark, lost fingers of left hand, dressed as a sailor; a native of Birmingham. Has been a sailor, but for the last 10 years travelled the country selling tracts relating to the sea. Had a pedlar's certificate, but name and place of issue unlnjwn. He went from Burslem to Brownhills Wakes, near Walsall, on 16th inst., being entrusted with the organ till 19th inst., but he failed to return it, and is supposed to have converted it to his own nse. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 35. — Cambridge ( County). — Committed for trial, at the next Quarter Sessions, for stealing har- ness, rugs, & c. — JOHN READ, alias ALFRED YATES, and JOHN WINN, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey) and eyes dark, scars on top of head, shin, and buttock ; dress, long dark coat, dark close fitting trousers, hard round black hat, lace boots, appearance of a groom. A native of Dublin. Is wanted in Berkshire for a similar offence. ( See Cases 9 and 10, 23rd ult.) Has already served two terms of penal servitude. Information to Supt. Whitechurch, Cambridge. on enclosed premises for an unlawful purpose— EDWARD CONWAY ( supposed false), gave his address as 125, Barfold- street, Birmingham ( false). Was convictod at Guildford, on 4th February, 1887, in name of GEORGE FULLERTON, and sentenced to 2 months imprisonment for being found in a dwelling- house with intent,; at West Ham Police Court, on 24th August, 1887, in name of EDWARD BLANCHARD, and sentenced to 1 month imprison- ment, for stealing a cash- box; at North London Police Court, on 4th June, 1889, in name of FRANK FERGUSON, and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for stealing jewellery. Is sup- posed to be a travelling thief. He came from Bir- mingham, and obtained a situation with a draper, having given the names of several firms as reference. These firms, however, knew nothing about him, except in one instance, viz., that of Messrs. Butler and Scissons, of Earl's- court, London, and that firm beingr enquired about, was unknown to Metropolitan Police. Hernaman, Lichfield. 68.— Bury St. Edmunds ( County). — 27th ult., by burglary— A small purse containing £ 7 in gold, a small pocket flask, a gold scarf- pin with blue stone, and a gold ring with forget- me- nots thereon. Entrance was effected by placing a ladder against a bedroom window, and the lower sash forced np apparently with a jemmy or chisel. The bedroom door was fastened by a wedge and gimlet, and copper wire stretched across the paths. Several small hooks were screwed into the lower window sashes to prevent them being opened.
