All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should, be addressed to THE EDITOE OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning personswhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the FOLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. fi. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. j. , ... , j Per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertt « m W mny announcement, will bs wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ l mail result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xew Scotland Ya'd, by cheque, crossed " DrummondSf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through 3fr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSION SOUGHT. MURDER. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). i.— HUDDERSFIELD ( County). — For the wilful murder, 21st ult., of Catherine Dennis, late servant at the Ivy Hotel, Linthwaite— JAMES STOCKWELL, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion very fresh, hair ( very coarse and inclined to curl) ginger, eyes grey; dress, fustian sleeved vest and trousers, coarse harden apron with string round neck, black or brown billycock hat, light boots. Is fond of boxing and of the company of low, loose women. Native of Linthwaite, near Huddersfield. Information to Supt. Pickard, Huddersfield. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 2.— C. I. Department.— For demanding with menaces the sum of £ 500,17th July last, with intent to steal the same— CHARLES GRANT, alias LE GR ANDE and FRENCH COLONEL, age about 40, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( thin on top) light brown, moustache and beard ( cut to point) fair, eyes hazel, receding forehead; dress, black melton overcoat, velvet collar, light trousers, black French silk hat ( narrow at top). Respectable appear- ance. Desciibes himself as a private enquiry agent. Was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court in June, 1889, with a woman named Demay, to 2 years inprisonment for a similar offence. Native of Denmark. Wariant issued. 3.— B Division.— For carnally knowing a girl between 13 and 16 years of age— WILLIAM WALLSON, age 65, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and small side whiskers grey; dresi blue pilot coat, two black cloth vests ( 1 longer than the other), police uniform trousers, black and white check shirt, black hard felt hat, red and black neckerchief, blucher boots. A hairdresser; supposed native of Hull. Warrant issued. 4.— B Division.— For stealing tools ( re- covered).— License Holder JOHN ROBERTSON, alias DONALD McDONALD, Office No. 40818, age 46, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top), moustache, and whiskers turning grey, eyes grey, scars on neck, right forearm, both knees, and 2 below left knee, mole upper lip, fleshy lump left thumb, left leg has been fractured ; dress, light jacket and trousers, black hard felt hat, may- be wearing a light dnst coat. A stonemason ; native of Perth. 5.— D Division.— For stealing, 1st inst, a lady's gold open face English lever watch, No. 44019, No. 8415 also scratched on inside of case, white dial, ! fchort yellow metal chain with small ball and a piece of string thereon attached; a lady's silver half- hunter watch,- inlaid blue enamel near figures, initials F. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1891. engraved on back, a short chain composed of silver and gold square links alternately, attached— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark ( sunburnt), long bony face, hair dark, no whiskers or moustache, very activc and talkative ; dress, dark blue jacket, dark trousers, black felt hat, carried tools in his hand and had the appearance of an electrician. He entered an open window from the roof of a house to which he gained access by stating he had been sent to fix a telephone wire post. 6.— K Division.— For embezzlement-- JAMES ROBERTSON, a grocer's assistant, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark ; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, dark blue trousers, light skull cap. Native of Glasgow, and may be found at Eldersleigh- street, in that city, where his father resides. Absconded 29th ult. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 7.— For stealing £ 67, and? other sums— JOHN MARKS, a cashier, late of 34, Belleville - road, Wandsworth- common, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., slender build, complexion fair, slight fair moustache and side- whiskers; respectably dressed. Absconded 28th ult. Warrant issued. 8.— For obtaining goods by false pretences— GEORGE CANNING, age 35 to 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, moustache dark brown, eyes dark, high cheek- bones ; dress, slate colour jacket and vest, dark trousers, sofl felt hat. Native of Newcastle- on- Tyne. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Windsor ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the Old Windsor Union— JEREMIAH BUCKLAND, a labourer, age 46, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey), and side whiskers dark, other- wise clean shaved; dress, pilot jacket, grey vest, corduroy trousers, blue check shirt, soft double- peak cap, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor. BRECONSHIRE. 10.— Crickhowell ( County).— For obtaining a quantity of oilcloth by false pretences— Two men : 1st, JOHN DAVIES, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair dark, small light moustache, eyes blue ; dress, light plaid coat and vest, dark broad omri trousers, blue silk spotted neckerchief, lace boots, light plaid cap with peak. A native of Cheltenham. Travels the country with a pony, about 12 hands, aged, and a cart painted bright yellow, wheels red, hawking oilcloth, accom- panied by his wife named " Rose," and 2 children ( boys), one about 2 years, and the other 6 or 7 weeks old- 2nd, WILLIAM SCARETT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown; dress, dark brown coat, similar to that worn by gamekeepers, dark vest, light brown trousers, lace boots, round hard felt hat. Supposed native of Gloucestershire. Travels the country with a waggon, covered black, painted yellow, wheels red, drawn by a horse and small brown donkey, hawking oilcloth, accompanied by his wife and 5 children. Both men left Brynmawr on night of 16th ult., and are supposed to be making their way into Gloucestershire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 11. — Chesham ( County). — For embezzling, 20th June last, £ 20 5s.— JOHN ELLIOTT, alias INGSTON, a shoemaker, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light brown, eyes grey, near sighted, and wears glasses. Is well known in Northamptonshire, where he has formed branches of the National Union of Boot aud Shoe Operatives. Native of Brighton. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Clarke, Chesham. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12.— Cambridge ( Borough). — Woodcut por- trait and description of CHARLES ROLFE, whose apprehension is spught for withholding money be- longing to a Building Society — Age 42, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey, prominent nose ; dress, dark brown plaid suit, white shirt, black hard felt hat. A native of Camden Town, London. About 6 or 7 years since he lived with his wife and daughter at Hadley, when he occupied 2 rooms in a row of houses near Hadley Highston, and worked as a bricklayer. Has also resided at Stanhope- street, Hampstead, London, and worked for many building firms in London. His father, who died about 2 years since, is supposed to have resided in Drummond- street, near Euston Station. Absconded 5th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Innes, Cambridge. CARNARVONSHIRE. 13.— Conway ( County). — For stealing £ 100 ( gold), at Llandudno, 14th ult. — THOMAS HETHER1NGTON, alias " CURLY TOM," age about 23, height 5 ft. 3 in., hair ( curly) dark, with brownish tinge when quite dry, clean shaved, oval face, impediment in speech ; dress, when last seen, fine black diagonal cloth coat, grey tweed trousers, brewn hat, and shoes. Is a circus man, and well known among circus and theatrical persons by the name of " Curly Tom." Wan- ant issued. Information to Supt. Williams, Conway. CHESHIRE. 14.— Chester ( City).— For uttering a forged cheque, with intent to defraud, 11th ult.— A man who gave the name of Sir WILLIAM SCOTT, Bart., age about 52, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion sallow, hair grey, rather bushy eyebrows, beard ( short) and moustache grey ( evidently had been sandy), slightly aquiline nose, rather round- shouldered, quiet manner ; dress, dark brown check suit, brown hat. He stayed at a first- class hotel for three days, and in discharge of his bill tendered a cheque, payable to Sir William Scott, Bart., or bearer, receiving the change in cash. The cheque, which purported to be drawn on the Finsbury Park Branch of the London and South Western Bank, Limited, by A. Edwards & Co., | has since been re- turned marked " no acccount." Enquiries have shown that the cheque was one of a book of twenty - five obtained by fraud on the 10th July last, from the above bank ; one has been uttered at each of the following places— Bangor, Buxton, King's Lyr. n, Lincoln, Cambridge. It is believed he has also represented himself as ARTHUR WILSON, Sir GEORGE WELSH, Sir CHARLES SMYTHE, Colonel HECTOR MACKENZIE, Sir R. ELSON, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Fenwick, Chester. DORSETSHIRE. 15.— Wimborne ( County).— For deserting his family— HARRY DAUNCEY GOULD, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion pale, hair and heavy moustache very dark, eyes dark brown, full face; dress, black frock coat, blue and white vest, light trousers, stand- up collar, silk hat, wears a gold albert; has also with him a serge suit, with anchor buttons, and a light suit. A draper ; native of South Barrow, Somerset. Was last seen at Waterloo Station, 20th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marsh, Wimborne. ESSEX. 16.— Southend ( County).— For attempting to commit a rape in a railway carriage between Grays and Purfleet, on 24th ult.— A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., thin build, complexion fair, hair and small moustache light, eyes blue, very mild expressive face, very white long thin hands ; appear- ance of a clergyman ; dre.= s, short black jacket, black vest ( open), showing white shirt front, gold studs, black necktie, black trousers, soft felt hat; wore a ring, and carried a stick and black bag with straps round it. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 17.— Co I ef O r d ( County).— For burglary 26 th ult., and stealing a watch ( recovered)— A MAN, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 in. slight build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, long face and nose; dress, dark tweed suit and cap, white collar; carried an umbrella; respectable appearance. Stated ho was a commercial traveller. The watch was found to have been pledged at Pontypool, 28th ult. Information to Supt. Ford, Coleford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 18.— Hemel Hempstead ( County). — For stealing a horse, cart, and harness ( recovered), at Great Berkhampstead, 14th ult. — JOHN KER- SHAW, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 10£ in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) dark, eyes ( sunken) brown, moustache dark, bald top of head, several teeth deficient lower jaw, walks erect; dress, dark coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, brown hard felt hat:- MARTHA KERSHAW, age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark; dress, dark cashmere ulster, fur lined, dark cashmere dress, bonnet trimmed with black velvet. They are supposed to have resided in the North of England, the man being employed by a tram car company. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Pearson, Hemel Hempstead. 19.— Hitchin ( County).— For assault, 4th ult,, at Lilly— THOMAS RALLEY, a brass finisher, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, heavy shoulders, complexion sallow, round face, hair very dark, black moustache, eyes hazel, dressed as a foundry man, 13 known as a boxer. Native of Northampton. Late of Luton. Warrant issued. Information to Supc. Reynolds, Hitchin. LANCASHIRE. 20— Bury ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee SAMUEL SMITH, Office No. 41829, age 34, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresb, hair brown, eyes blue, scars left side forehead, back of each shoulder, on knee, and front of left shin, blue scar outside left forearm, and back if left wrist. Sentenced at Salford, 18th February, 1891, to 6 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. 7735. Information to Supt. Henderson, Bury. 21.— Liverpool ( Cit,/).— For failing to report — License Holder JOHN JOHNSTON, Office No. 11156, age 35, height 5 ft. 10£ in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, blue dot between left thumb and finger, black mole front of left thigh, mole back of neck. Sentenced at Glasgow. 27th Dec., 1883, to 8 yeirs penal ^ rvitude for housebreaking. Licensed 4th April last. J 1080. Information to the Chief Superintendent, Detective Department, Liverpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. 22.— Bourn ( County).— For stealing, 26th ult,, at Little Bytham, £ 8 lis. ( including a jubilee shil- ling) JONES, age about 19, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slender build, complexion fair, hair light; dress, brown speckled cloth jacket, blue guernsey under, blue cloth navy trousers, b'. ack cheesecutter cap, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1891. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 patent- leather band across front, with brass buttons at sides, old lace boots. He left Bytham Railway Station the same day, taking a ticket for Leicester. He stated he belonged to the West Surrey Militia, and had been up for training. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Bourn. SHROPSHIRE. 23. — Whitchurch ( County). — For stealing £ 1 5s.. 27th ult, Hungry Ilatton — EDITH STEVENSON, alias GREEN, age 18, height 4 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair light; dress, navy blue dress with orange stripe, black jacket, brown hat trimmed brown velvet, fur tippet, strong lace boots ; a general servant. Has relations at Stafford, Stoke- upon- Trent, Walsall, and in the neighbourhood of Eccleshall, Staffordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edwards, Whitchurch. WORCESTERSHIRE. 24.— Upton ( County). — For stealing a gold watch and chain ( recovered), 12th ult.— A man who gave the name of E. SMITH, age about 55, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fair, sandy whiskers, and heavy moustache, turning grey; dress, light coat, black felt hat. Information to Supt. Drury, Upton. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 25.— s proat I ey ( County).— For housebreaking at Preston, 22nd ult., and stealing a silver lever watch, No. 4097, " Nutsey, Alford," on works; gold albert guard, curb pattern ; and steel chain, with key and seal— JOHN KEY SCOTT, alias JOHN WESLEY NEWDICK, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 in., hair light browD, whiskers and moustache ginger, eyes hazel, prominent front teeth in upper jaw, circle with cross in centre tattooed right forearm ; dress, brown cord suit, breeches and leggings, or trousers which button at bottom in shape of leggings. A native of Thetford, Norfolk. Is known at Derby, Nottingham, Ashbourne, and Hull, where he has been previously convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Burniston, Sproatley. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 26.— Leeds ( Borough).— For foiling to report— License Holder, Office No. 40577, THOMAS WIL- SON, alias JOHN McGUIRE, THOMAS SMITH and JOHN McQUIRE, age 39, height 5 ft. in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scars heel of left thumb and inside second left finger. Sentenced at Ripon, 23rd October, 1886, to 5 years penal servitude and 2 years police supervision for receiving. Licensed 21st November, 1890. A. M. 1061. Information to the Chief Constable of Leeds. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. BERKSHIRE. 27.— Newbury ( County).— Committed for trial at next Quarter Sessions, on two charges of obtain- ing money by false pretences— WILLIAM SALE, alias WILLIAM STEYENS, age 48, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair ( turning givy) dark, eyes hazel, small wart on b rid go of nose, and letter " D " on left side ; dress, brown mixture suit, black hard felt hat— all much worn. Is supposed to have been previously con- victed for similar offences, at Somerset Quarter Sessions, at Taunton, in January and July, 1890, and on latter occasion sentenced to 9 months imprison- ment. Information to Supt. Bennett, Newbury. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 28.— Cambridge ( Borough).— Remanded till 8th inst., for stealing £ 7 ( trick) — ERNEST FLETCHER or HALL, age 21, height 5 ft. 9 in. without shoes, complexion pale, hair brown, clean shaven, eyes grey, scar left little finger, small mole left ribs; dress, black melton coat and vest, dark grey mixture trousers, new white shirt, stand- up collar, btnt at corners, white silk tie, hard felt hat, lace boots ; respectable appearance. He represented himself as a civil engineer, engaged on works near Milton, and expected immediately a number of men, for whom he desired lodging accommodation. He had cirds in his possession with " Ernest Fletcher, Norfolk- street, Strand," thereon, and 2 pawn- tickets ( one for a double- barrel breech- loading guD, pledged 26th ult., with John Henry Stebbing, 1, Abbey- gate, Bury St. Edmunds, in name of Ernest Hall, Thorpe- road, Norwich) ; a receipted bill for the hire of a horse and trap from the Bell Hotel, Thetford, 24th ult., was also found on him. Has been four times convicted since 1885, and was discharged, 19th ult., from Bedford Prison, after 20 months im- prisonment. Supposed wanted for other offences. Information to Chief Constable Innes, Cambridge. HERTFORDSHIRE. 29.— Hitchin ( County).— Committed for trial at next Hertford Quarter Sessions, for larceny — JOHN GEORGE WALL, a cooper, late of Baldock, age 53, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, side- whiskers, eyes blue, scar over right eye, walks erect, and appears quick and active. Has worked at Homesdale Brewery, Sevenoaks, and at Stroud Cement Works. Is known at St. Margaret's, Rochester. Native of Romford, Essex. Information to Sijpt. Reynolds, Hitchin. 30.— Ware ( County).— Remanded till 8th inst., for being found on enclosed premises — JAMES HENRY HALFRED, age 56, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes grey, scar inside right shin, varicose veins in- side both thighs, abscess mark centre of chest, scars right forearm and elbow; dress, dark cloth jacket, old white slop, old white moleskin trousers, black felt hat, lace boots. A labourer; native of Lambeth, London. Information to Capt. Wymer, Ware. LANCASHIRE. 31.— Bolton ( County).— Remanded till 7th inst., for stealing a watch— EDWARD SMITH ( sup- posed fictitious), age 37, height 5 ft. 11 in., very stout build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, cut mark right cheek; dress, ribbed- fustian navvy's suit. Supposed native of Derby. Information to Supt. Eatough, Bolton.
