Alt announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOE OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particularsconcerning personstchose apprehension is sought will be inserted inone issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them hy another force. • Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. A. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. t. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of lui. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. < 5. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature Of « » officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to le apprehended or of stolen property lear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen propi rty to le inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicfi may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt le clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xeiv Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond If Co.," Post Office Order payalle at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the : irculation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing • Mays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering :< reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, « r of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly « pressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable, ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ' ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear ' thereon. • 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the isward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted,. APPREHENSION SOUGHT. MURDER. l.— YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). SPROATLEY { County)— On Saturday, 1st August, MARY JANE LANGLEY was found murdered in a ditch in Preston Long Lane. From the body had been stolen a silver geneva watch, No. 12734, a gold albert guard ( which had been a gentleman's), small link pattern. The above reward will be paid by Major Bower, Chief Constable, Beverley, for the apprehension of the thief and recovery of the watch. Information to Major Bower, Chief Constable, Beverley, or to Supt. Burniston, Sproatley. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 2. — C- I. Department. — For murder and larceny within the jurisdiction of the French Republic— JEAN FOllGET, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion florid, hair and beard red, oval face, eyes brown, scar from burn right arm, freckled face; dressed in new suit; and brown felt hat. Extradition wan- ant issued. 3. — C I. Department. — For fraudulent bankruptcy, committed within the jurisdiction of the German Empire — JOSEPH HUNKEMOELLER, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and slight moustache light, eyes blue, light eyebrows; wears a grey over- coat. Extradition warrant issued. 4. — C. I. Department. — For insulting be- haviour towards a lady — EDWARD ROWDON, age 41, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes light, beard, whiskers and moustacho light brown; shabby- genteel appearance. Has been previously convicted for similar offences, known at Oxford. Warrant issued. Is well 5. — Convict Supervision Department — For stealing a cheque- book, Nos. 501973 to 502900, on the Imperial Bank, 6, Lothbury, E. G., and forging and uttering cheques from the same— Expiree convict ARTHUR ANDREWS, alias ARTHUR RUTER, OSCAR REUTER, RUDOLPH REUTER, Capt. E. SELWYN, The Hon. E. CLIFTON, The Hon. A MITFORD, CHARLES CLIFTON, & c., Office No. 30270, age 31, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, mole right side neck and on right breast, scar back of neck and right eyebrow ; stutters. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 23rd May, 1881, to 5 years penal servitude for forgery, and at the Middlesex Sessions, 19th August, 1887, to 12 months hard labour for forgery and fraud. 6. — N Division — For carnally knowing and abusing a girl between 13 and 16 years of age— JOHN BRANCH, age 42, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion pale, hair brown, thin whiskers aud mous- tache, eyes grey; dress, grey j tcket and suit, laCo 4 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. boots, black hard felt hat. Suffers from phthisis' and was invalided from the Royal Marines, at Chatham, in 1872. Warrant issued. 7. — T Division. — For embezzlement— GEO. OA VIES, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache light, eyes blue, bald top of head, walks with quick sharp step, and swings his stick ; dress, black serge jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. ABERDEENSHIRE. 8.— Aberdeen (. City).— Woodcut portrait and description of SAMUEL DAVIDSON, whose appiehension is sought for embezzlement, age about 29, height 5 ft. 7 in , complexion sallow, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, moustache ( heavy) brown eyes, haze!, rather long and thin face; dress, when last seen, dark tweed jacket suit, hard felt hat, lace boots. May endeavour to leave the country. Absconded 4th inst. A cashier or accountant; native of Aberdeen. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wyness, Aberdeen. BEDFORDSHIRE. 9.— Luton ( Comity).— For stealing a lady's very small geneva watch, chased back, small flowers on dial ; entrusted to him to clean on 18th ult.— A man known as " CLOCKY," a travelling watch and clock cleaner, ago 67 to 60, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, thin beard, very quiet and reserved, of good address; dress, dark jacket, speckled trousers, hard felt hat. Carries a black glazed bag and a walking'- stick. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tydeman, Luton. BERKSHiRE. 10.— Windsor ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the Old Windsor Union— JEREMIAH BUCKLAND, a labourer, age 46, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey), and side whiskers dark, other- wise clean shaved; dress, pilot jacket, grey vest, corduroy trousers, blue check shirt, soft double- peak cap, lacc boots. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor. BRECONSHIRE. 11.— Crickhowell ( County).— For obtaining a quantity of oilcloth by false pretences— Two men : 1st, JOHN DAVIES, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair dark, small light moustache, eyes blue; dress, light plaid coat and vest, dark broad cord trousers, blue silk spotted neckerchief, lace boots, light plaid cap with peak. A native of Cheltenham. Travels the country with a pony, about 12 hands, aged, and a cart painted bright yellow, wheels red, hawking oilcloth, accom- panied by his wife named " Rose," and 2 children ( boys), one about 2 years, and the other 6 or 7 weeks old- 2nd, WILLIAM SCARETT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown; dress, dark brown coat, similar to that worn by gamekeepers, dark vest, light brown trousers, lacc boots, round hard felt hat. Supposed native of Gloucestershire. Travels the country with a waggon, covered black, painted yellow, wheels red, drawn by a horse and small brown donkey, hawking oilcloth, accompanied by his wifo and 5 children. Both men left Brynmawr on night of 16th inst., and are supposed to be making their way into Gloucestershire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12.— Isle of Ely ( County). — For larceny— SAMUEL FARMER ( supposed false), age about 16, height .5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( parted down middle and plastered on forehead) light brown; dress, black cloth coat and vest, blue serge trousers with narrow red stripe down seams, light cloth cap Left Ely on 27th ult., stating he was going to Newmarket, Thetford, Norwich, and Great Yar mouth. May be found in common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Dockerill, Chatteris, Isle of Ely. 13.— Cambridge ( Borough).— Woodcut por- trait and description of CHARLES ROLFE, whose apprehension is sought for withholding money be- longing to a Building Society — Age 42, height 5 ft. 6^ in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey, prominent nose ; dress, dark brown plaid suit, white shirt, black hard felt hat. A native of Camden TOWD, London. About 6 or 7 years since he lived with his wife and daughter at Hadley, when he occupied 2 rooms in a row of houses near Hadley Highston, and worked as a bricklayer. Has also resided at Stanhope- street, Hampstead, London, and worked for many building firms in London. His father, who died about 2 years since, is supposed to have resided in Drummond- street, near Euston Station. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Innes, Cambridge. CARNARVONSHIRE. 14.— Conway ( County). — For stealing £ 100 ( gold), at Llandudno, 14th inst. — THOMAS 1IETHE R1NGTON, alias " CURLY TOM," age about 23, height 5 ft. 3 in., hair ( curly) dark, with brownish tinge when quite dry, clean shaved, oval face, impediment in speech ; dress, when last seen, fine black diagonal cloth coat, grey tweed trousers, brewn hat, and shoes. Is a circus man, and well known among circus and theatrical persons by the name of " Curly Tom." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Williams, Conway. CHESHIRE, 15— Runcorn ( County).— TOT stealing 136 lbs. of brass bearings ( recovered), at Runcorn, on 13th inst.— Two men : 1st, JAMES SMITH, alias JOSEPH WEST, and GYPSY JOE, age 40, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion swarthy, liair black, mous- tache dark, appearance of a gipsy; dress, dark clothes, and dark " bucco " cap.— 2nd, known as " PUNCH," age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion very fresh, hair and moustache sandy; dress, old dirty pilot jacket, moleskin trousers, strong lace boots, " bucco " cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Runcorn, DERBYSHIRE. 16— Ashbourne ( County). — For stealing & sheep and 2 lambs ( 5 sheep and lambs recovered), oa 0th inst. — JOHN ADAMS, ago 26, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair inclined to be sandy, cut short, moustache and short side whiskers sandy, lost 3 fingers left hand; dress, short black jacket ( out at elbow), dark brown trousers ( ragged at bottom), heavy nailed boots ( new), and black hard felt hat. A labourer ; native of Witton, near Alstonefield, Staffordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gill, Ashbourne. DORSETSHIRE. 17. — Blandford ( County). — For burglary — JAMES SHEPPARD, age 35, height 5 ft. 6± in. stout build, complexion fair, hair brown ( inclined to be sandy), eyes grey, generally clean shaved, scar over right eye, on both cheeks, palm of right hand, bridge of nose, forehead, thumb and forefinger left hand, mole right shoulder, and left side of back, faint tattoo marks on right wrist, ring second fingor right hand. A native of Blandford. Has served in the Navy. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hazzard, Blandford. 18. — Dorchester ( County). — For stealing ( bailee), a clarionet and a music- book, 1st inst.—• CHARLES GREY, age 21, height 5 ft. 9£ in. complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache dark, arms and legs tattooed ; dress, when last seen, blue serge coat and trousers, light vest, light stripe cloth cap, gutta- percha collar, bow tie. Is a discharged naval band.> man, and a good musician. May be found playing the instrument at watering places. Supposed to have been employed at the Pelican Club, London, previous to December, 1890. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gale, Dorchester. 19.— Wimborne ( County).— For deserting hi » family— HARRY" DAUNCEY GOULD, age 33^ height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion pale, hair and heavy moustache very dark, eyes dark brown, full face; dress, black frock coat, blue and white vest, light trousers, stand- up collar, silk hat, wears a gold albert; has also with him a serge suit, with auchor buttons, and a light suit. A diaper ; native of South Barrow, Somerset. Was last seen at Waterloo Station, 20th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marsh, Wimborne. ESSEX. 20.— B rai nt ree ( County).— For embezzlement— FREDERICK ROOKE, age about 20, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, slight moustache, thick set, round shouldered ; dre* s, whon last seen, on 29tli ult, dark cloth jacket, grey vest and trousers, black hard felt hat. A labonrer; native of Colno Engaine, Essex. Warrant issued. 21. — Brain tree ( County). — For obtaining money by presenting forged cheques — JOHN HODGSON, age about 34, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache black, eyes brown, lower part of cheeks bloated, when speaking to anyone looks the other way ; dress, when last seen, on 21st ult., black diagonal coat, dark trousers with small blue stripe, black hard felt hat. AD. electric bell fitter ; supposed native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Elsey, Braintrce. 22.— Brentwood ( Countij). — For stealing a light covert coat, and a dark waterproof coat, from a harness- room at Romford, on 5th inst.— A MAN, ago about 32, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes ( small) supposed grey, sandy stubby moustache, slight side whiskers, high cheekbones, reddish spots under chin ; dress, dark grey coat and vest, light trousers with brown stripes, lace boots, brown cloth cap. He represented himself to be a detective from Scotland Yard. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. 23.— Southend ( County).— For attempting to commit a rape in a railway carriage between Grays and Purfleet, on 24th inst.— A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., thin build, complexion fair, hair and small moustache light, eyes blue, very mild expressive face, very white long thin bands ; appear- ance of a clergyman; dress, short black jacket, black vest ( open), showing white shirt front, gold studa. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 24.— Pontypridd ( County). — For embezzling £ 100 — ARTHUR FREDERICK HOPKINS, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stiff build, light moustache, and side whiskers; dress, grey suit, stand- up collar, side- spring boots, black bowler hat; carried a black bag, and brown tin box. Warrant issued. 25.— Pontypridd ( County). — For stealing a watch— JAMES WILLIAMS, commission agent, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair And moustache brown ; dress, dark clothes, bowler hat. May endeavour to obtain employment as clerk or insurance agent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Pontypridd. HADDINGTONSHIRE. 26.— Haddington ( County). — For obtaining £ 40, by false pretences, on 7th and 22ud July last— DAVID KING, colporteur, West Pencaitland, age 33, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion : fresh, hair ( reddish) and moustache light, of good address ; dress, grey tweed jacket suit, single peak, light tweed cap. Has been in the Army, and in India, Has also worked in a pottery, and may get • employment in a pottery or brick works, or obtain money from clergymen or religious people. Is accompanied by his wife, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., wearing a red velvet bonnet, and a boy, age 9 months, wearing a red velvet turban. Warrant issued. HAMPSHIRE. 27.— Winchester ( City).— For stealing a lady's imitation sealskin jacket, ^- length, lined brown satin, has been neatly repaired under right arm ; and a pair of spectacles, white metal frames, flat upper rims— ALEC CLIFFORD, alias PROSSER, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald on top) dark, moustache brown, stubby beard; dress, dark blue suit, white necktie with small black stripe, black and white straw hat with blue band, or a cap, wore folding eye glasses with black cord attached, and a gold ring, set oval carbuncle. Had with him a brown gladstone bag, and a pair of red woollen- worked slippers. Stated he was on a sketching tour. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Morton, Winches- ter. HERTFORDSHIRE. 28.— Hemel Hempstead ( County). — For stealing a horse, cart, and harness ( recovered), at Great Berkhampstead, 14th inst— JOHN KER- SHAW, age 15 to 50, height 5 ft. 10| in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) dark, eyes ( sunken) brown, moustache dark, bald top of head, several teeth deficient lower jaw, walks erect; dress, dark coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, brown hard felt hat:- MARTHA KERSHAW, age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark ; dress, dark cashmere ulster, fur lined, dark cashmere dress, bonnet trimmed with black velvet. They are supposed to have resided in the North of England, the man being employed by a tram car company. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Pearson, Hemel Hempstead. KENT. 29.— Cranbrook ( County).— For stealing the sum of 12s. at Horsmonden, 6th inst.— GEORGE T. HAMMOND, alias GEORGE BRAZIER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair and moustache ( heavy) dark, shaved on chin, eyes grey, peculiarity about the ball or pupil of one eye ; dress, blue serge jacket, black vest, very light cloth trousers, white shirt, red socks, Oxford shoes, black hard felt hat. Was formerly a turncock at Hastings, and recently employed as a miner on the Craubrook and Paddock Wood Railway. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bartlett, Cranbrook. 30.— West Mailing ( CWy).- LIONEL W. BARTRAM, Case No. 20, 13th March last, not to be apprehended. 31.— Margate ( Borough). — For stealing, 6th inst.— 1 gold mourning locket; 4 Half gold lockets ; 1 9- carat mourning locket; 7 9- carat gold engraved lockets; 2 gold seals and keys; 2 doz. charms; 15- carat bar swivel and tassel; 1 pair opera- glasses, in leather case; 5 silver- mounted hair alberts ; 3 plated hair albcrts ; 1 silver ring, gold- moantcd; 1 9- carat gold swivel; 2 gold- mounted ivory tooth- picks ; gold sleeper earwires ; silver- twisted stick- knob ; 1 long silver curb chain ; 2 silver alberts ; 6 silver thimbles; 3 plain silver collar studs; 4 plated collar studs; 2 black horn alberts; 4 coral stones and lapis lazuli ; 1 plain 18- carat enamel locket— HENRY FOSTER, a waiter, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, whiskers about 1 inch at side, otherwise clean shaved, high cheek bones, two small scars on nose, long thin face, prominent teeth. Is fond of the company of betting men. He left Ramsgatc for London in the steam- ship " Oriole," on morning of 7th inst., after having sold a chain to pay his fare. Has a sister employed at the High Cliffe Mansion Hotel, Bournemouth, and is said to have friends in Leman- street, London. Whilst residing in Margate, he kept company with a man named McGrcgory or Lucas, who left the same day as Foster, and who is supposed to reside at Falcon- road, Clapham. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Bolton ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee ELIZA MANCER, alias ELEANOR GREENALL, ELIZA GREENHALGH, and ELIZA MORGAN, Office No. 35732, age 41, height 5 ft. i in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes blue, both ears split, birthmark near It eye, scar under It eye and rt side chin, I. M. F. F. S. B and 21 on rt arm, I. F. and a heart on It arm; diseased scalp. Sentenced at Salford, 11th April, 1887, to 15 months hard labour and 4 years police supervision for larceny ( person). 355. Information to Snpt. Eatough, Bolton. 33. — Chorley ( County). — For stealing at Whittle- le- Woods, 12th inst.— 1 blue pilot coat, usual pockets ; 1 light plaid vest; 1 moleskin vest; 1 black cardigan jacket; and 1 white silk handker- chief— A man who gave the name of ARTHUR SLATER, a navvy, age 27 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair ( cut short and inclined to curl) light brown, moustache; dressed in stolen articles. Information to Supt.
