AV. announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed, lo TiiK I. MTUU OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONPOX, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons tchose apprehension is sought tcill be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTK, if they are su/ Jk- ient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. Jn all casts where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Port rails of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15.9. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. Evert/ announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. . 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZEITE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will bi wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ l may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday miming. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xew Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond <$• Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted at advertisements. E. AXDEBSOX, Editor. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. - Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. < b) < c) < d) 2.- NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of- crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— B Division-— For stealing, 29th ult., a chestnut Russian pony, 13| hands; a set of brass- mounted harness, and a dog- cart., walnut wood body, black wheels, picked out red— A MAN, age 50 to 60, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair and whiskers grey; dress, black suit, hard felt hat. Supposed identical with William Bonnor, in custody at St. Neot's, Hunts. 2. — D Division. — wearing apparel, etc. For stealing, 21st nit., ( recovered), JOSEPH STRANKS, age 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes grey, dress black walking coat and vest, light tweed trousers, high silk or black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 3— Division.— For stealing a quantity of clothing, value £ 30— PETER LEHMAN, age 40, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair and heavy mous- tache light, eyes blue, of military appearance; dress, blue serge jacket, blue vest with white spots, light tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. A German. Warrant issued. 4.— E Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of EDW. ARTHUR MAURICE CALLENDER NEWTON, whose apprehension is sought for the abduction of Lucy Pearman. Description of New- ton:— age about 40, height 5 ft. 11 in., thin build, complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) dark, bald, moustache black, very small chin, stoops, peculiar gait, wears his hat on back of head, of gentlemanly appearance and good address ; dresses well and wears a high silk hat, carries a large cherry wood stick or umbrella, with broad silver band, engraved with letter " N." Supposed native of . Chingford Essex. Description of LUCY" PEARMAN, age 15, height 4 ft. 10 in., thin build, complexion fair, hair ( worn loose) light, eyes blue, rather large features, pre- possessing appearance. Warrant issued. 5. — N Division. — Woodcut portrait and de- scription of CHARLES ROWLAND FORD, whose apprehension is sought for embezzlement: age 21, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair very light brown, eyes light blue, rather near- sighted and wears spectacles ; dress, short dark hip jacket and vest, grey striped trousers, light brown hard felt hat. A native of Tottenham, Middlesex. Is fond of boxing and football and is an amateur run- ner. His mother and stepfather reside at the " Surrey Yeoman " public- house, Dorking, Surrey. Warrant issued. Native of Dulwich. Warrant issued. 8.— V Division.— For deserting his family, RO- BERT ROWALL, alias WRIGHT, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey, walks erect, military appearance. Has lately worked at Aldershot as a bricklayer. Native of Kingston- on- Thames. Warrant issued. 9.— V Division.—' Rw stealing, 15th inst., 3 watches ( 2 gold, 1 repeater, No. 41160, makers Brockbank & Atkins, L. B. on outer case); 1 lady's small watch ; 1 small silver do, spray of roses on face, 2 chains ( 1 gold, small links, with pistol watch- key and seal attached) ; 1 silver albert, small links ; 1 gold locket containing lady's photo ; 1 gold pencil case ; 1 garnet necklet locket attached, 1 do. brooch and earrings; 2 gold rings ( 1 set 7 pearls, 1 set gar- net) ; 1 pair gold earrings, fancy oblong shape; 3 bracelets; 1 gold band, snap fastening, scroll worked thereon ; 2 silver do. ( 1 round chased, 1 snake pat- tern) ; 1 black leather portmanteau, white metal lock, American fastening; and about £ 2 in gold— EDITH ALEXANDRA, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., com plexion sallow, hair and eyes dark brown, shows her teeth when speaking; dress, blue dress with red and white and yellow stripes, dark navy- blue shoulder cape, white straw hat, trimmed pink roses. Native of London. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. . >, , eyes hazel, freckled, lost one upper front tooth, several small scars lower part of back, mole on belly. Sentenced at Liverpool, 7th June, 1887, to 18 months hard labour and 5 years police super- vision for larceny. Well known in the neighbour- hood of Chester and throughout North Wales. Hindley, Birkenhead. 14.— Runcorn ( County).— For stealing, 24th inst., at Ashton- by- Sutton, 1 side filster plane, 1 rabbet do., 6 beading planes, 3 turning tools, 5 paint brushes ( new), 1 joiner's bass, 1 2- ft. rule, all stamped " T. S."—" JAMES HARRISON" ( sup- posed false), age about 33 or 34, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, hair dark, moustache black, large aquiline nose; dress, black coat and vest, light cloth trousers, white collar, blue tie. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Runcorn. CUMBERLAND. 15.— Carlisle ( County).— For deserting his wifel and family— JAMES McKUNE, or LARRY, a| labourer, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, I hair dark, bushy side- whiskers, erect and swagger- ing gait; generally dressed in blue pilot coat, light I moleskin trousers, soft billycock hat, or peak cap. When last heard of he was employed on the Man- chester Waterworks, in the neighbourhood of Kendal. Native of Kilhead, Dumfriesshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Graham, Carlisle. quick step. Is a maltster and thatcher, or labourer of any kind. Was seen in London about nine months since, and is now supposed to be living in Deptford. A native of Sheering, Essex. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Bishop Stortford Board of Guardians for the apprehension of Tadgell. Information to Supt. Tripp, Bishop Stortford. KENT. 20. — Dover ( Borough). — For deserting his children— WM. MUNNS, a grocer's warehousemen, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache ( slight) dark, walks badly; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, dark cord trousers, heavy boots, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sanders, Dover. 21.— Margate ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and children— WILLIAM HENRY WALS- HAM, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, slight whiskers and moustache, thin face, high cheekbones, speaks with strong cockney accent. A cogtermonger or photographer. May be found at some seaside resort. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Margate. DENBIGHSHIRE. BERKSHIRE. '• 4 10. — Windsor ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 2 3s. 6d. cash, and food and lodgings;. to the value of £ 1, by false pretences— PATRICK BURNS: a labourer, age about 36, height about 5 ft. 9 in. complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache light, tattoed right forearm, silver plate let in on top of head, and wound in stomach caused by a bullet dress, brown tweed suit, lace boots ( new), black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 11. — Windsor ( Borough).— For assault, 14th inst.— CHARLES HARRIS, a labourer, age 24, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion fair, hair light brown clean shaved; dress, black jacket, plaid vest, cord trousers, black hard felt hat, spring- side boots, May be found in tho company of a prostitute, named Leonora Lilly, age 24, short and stout; or may be found in the neighbourhood of Staines. Supposed native of Reading, where his parents reside. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor. CARNARVONSHIRE. 12.— Bangor ( County).— For embezzling £ 60— JAMES KENT, age 32, height 5 ft. 3 in., com plexion fair, hair light brown, whiskers and monstache cut short, eyes hazel, small made, and narrow shoulders ; dress, black morning coat, brown trousers, black straw bowler hat. Is well- known in North Wales and Cheshire, having travelled in the coal trade. Has been in the employ of Simpson, Davies & Co., ef Runcorn. Native of Frodsham, Cheshire. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Roberts, Bangor. CHESHIRE. 13.— Birkenhead ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee GRIFFITHS EDWARDS, alias WM. EDWARDS, Office No. 36672, age 47, height 5 ft. in., completion fresh, hair turning grey, 16.— Wrexham ( County).— For stealing one sovereign, one half- sovereign, one jubilee half- crown, one four- shilling piece, one five- shilling piece, and a silver lever watch ( out of repair), " London, Patent Lever" on face, " Registered in March, 1884 ( year not certain) on inside .-— FRANCIS GEORGE SELWAY, age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight dark moustache, smart appearance; dress, grey suit, lace boots, brown hat. Worked as painter, but stated he had been employed as a waiter, and in gentleman's service. Belongs to the Army Reserve, and is supposed to be a Scotchman.— EMILY SELWAY ( wife of above), age about 24, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, short neck; dress, plush jacket, black dress trimmed witb; water- wave silk, black hat with pink bows and yellow rose. A native of Bolton and speaks with Lancashire accent. They booked per Great Western Railway at 6.5 p. m., 19th inst., and had with them a small oval tin box, painted light oak colour, a round tin box, a brown paper parcel, and a square market basket. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Leigh ( County).— For stealing, 23rd inst., a pair of woollen socks, dark grey and mixture of light spots, and a redstripe cotton shirt— GEORGE FILE S, a tramping painter, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark; dress, black jacket, white slop, grey striped tweed trousers, black felt hat, lace boots. Well known to painters throughout Lancashire. 23.— Leigh ( County).— For failing to report—• Supervisee ALFRED TURNER, Office No. 41517, age 35, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scars centre of chest, left elbow and second joint of left forefinger, small pock- pits bend of right arm. Sentenced at Liverpool, 15th July, 1884, to 7 years penal servitude, and 5 years police supervision, for housebreaking. E K 716. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. DERBYSHIRE. 17.— Chesterfield ( County).— For failing to report— Licence- Holder JOSEPH LEEMAN, Office No. 41051, age 27, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, slight scar right eyebrow, red flesh mark top of right shoulder, and brown ditto between breasts, varicose veins right leg, pock- marked. Sentenced at Wakefield, 4th April, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision for larceny. Licensed 12th March, 1891. N 172. Information to Supt. Borrett, Chesterfield. HEREFORDSHIRE. 18.— Hereford ( County).— For arson, 13th inst. — HENRY BANKS, age 17, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion very freckled, hair light sandy ; dress, brown plaid mixture jacket, brown vest and trousers, black hard hat, side- spring boots. A labourer native of Weston Beggard, near Hereford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Smith, Shire Hall, Hereford. Bent, Old Trafford. 25.— Widnes ( County).— For stealing £ 5, by menaces, 8th inst.— TIMOTHY CONROY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey, small black dot under left eye; dress, blue cloth jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, black billycock hat, smart appearance. A hawker of pictorial maps. Has served in tho Liverpool and Bradford Police Forces, also held a beerhouse licence at Bradford, in which town his wife and family now reside. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Information to the Chief Superintendent, De tective Department, Liverpool. 27.— Manchester ( City).—- For failing to re- port— Supervisee JANE FALLON, alias MARY GILBERT, MARY WALLACE, JANE LANCAS- TER. and MARY LANCASTER, Office No. 41628, age 62, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, scars right of forehead and left eyebrow, mole left of face, fourth right finger deformed. Sentenced at Salford, Sth July, 1886, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated 4th July, 1891. M 16.— License Holder WALTER JAMES HOPE, alias WALTER. HOPE, Office No. 41060, age 25, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scars right of neck, outside right forearm and left elbow, blue dot inside right forearm, slightly pockpitted. Sentenced at Man- chester, 2nd December, 1886, to 5 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision for shop- breaking. Liberated 16th March, 1891. M 565.— Supervisee JOHN McNEILL, Office No. 40181, age 71, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair grey ( bald), eyes hazel, scars back of neck, right eyebrow, bridge of nose, right shoulder, right shin, right thigh, right forearm and wrist, left hip, spine, and inside left knee. Sentenced at Salford, 7th July, 1884, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated 13th September, 1890. K 576.— Supervisee RICHARD DEAKIN, Office No. 41304, age 57, height 5ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue, scars on forehead, each eyebrow, right of neck, inside and outside left forearm, and inside right forearm; nose inclined to left. Sentenced at Manchester, 17th April, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny.— License Holder JOHN MURRAY, alias JOHN HENRY BIRCHWOOD, THOMAS and JOHN WILKINSON, JOHN CAREY, JOHN HURREY, and JOHN WILLIAMS, Office No. 41286, age 44, height 5 ft. 5 in , complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scars left temple, above left elbow, and left thumb and wrist, moles left eye- brow, right of back, and back of neck. Sentenced at Manchester, 14th October, 1885, to 7 years penal servitude for larceny ( person). Liberated 4th May, 1891. S L 527.— Supervisee THOMAS ROGERS, alias WILLIAM BRIDGE, SAMUEL HOUGH, HENRY TUTE, and HENRY TATE, Office No. 38321, age 52, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes blue, large indented scar back of head, two scars right knee, nose fractured and in- clined to left, lost all top teeth. Sentenced at York, 20th July, 1880, to 10 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for uttering forged bank notes. Liberated 23rd September, 1889. Z G 812. — Supervisee GEORGE HENRY ALLEN, Office No. 40844, age 37, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes blue, scars on forehead, chin, shin and shoulders, hairy chest. Sentenced at Man- chester, 17th April, 1890, to 9 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Man- chester. 28.— Oldham ( Borough). — For stealing £ 133 0s. 9< i.— GEORGE SILK, late Secretary to the Oldham Provincial Card and Blowing Room Association, age 33, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion pale, hair, whiskers and mous- tache dark brown, ( hair and whiskers cut short), respectably dressed, last heard of at Chester, 18th inst. Was sentenced, 1st January, 1884, at Dorchester, to 9 months imprisonment for similar frauds, and sup- posed convicted prior to that at Manchester or Liverpool. DERBYSHIRE. 70.— Chesterfield ( County).— 17th inst., in a pond at Wingerworth, with a large stone tied to the neck, the body of A MAN, age about 40, length 5 ft. 9^ in., hair brown, moustache sandy; dress, dark brown check cloth jacket, drab cord trousers, blue peak cap, light lace boots, one protector in both soles, blue and white checked gingham shirt, white hemp braces, blue stripes, angola singlet; wore a pair of strong spectacles, very thick, similar to flint glass ; the appearance of a labourer; a small pocket- knife was found on body. He was seen in the neighbourhood 11th inst., and was then acting in a strange manner. At an inquest, held 18th inst., a verdict of " suicide whilst temporarily insane" was returned. M. worked in red cotton, a bottle containing medicine, George Boor & Co., Dispensing Chemists, 55, Bisliopsgate- street " Without; 27, New Broad- street, and 3, Addle- street, Wood- street, Cheapside, thereon.
