Al: announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them shout,! be addressed to THE EDITOB OF TIIE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, J. UNHON, S. W. 2. Part iivlars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the 1 ( II. ICK GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. o. J'nrl raits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of " is. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; ana, if the name of such person be required to be ins rted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicfi may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. Kern Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond 8f Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. , 13. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward biils. for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( rf) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must bj used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to prop< rty stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPHBEHENSION SOUGHT. MURDER. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. i.— D DIVISION.— Woodcut portrait and description of PAUL ACHETON, alias ASHTOJN, a Frenchman, whose apprehension is sought for the murder of a woman, on 21st ult. Description:— Age 28, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair, and long* moustache fair ( may now be clean shaved), eyes dark, is near- sighted, and walks with a peculiar rolling gait; dress, grey jacket, striped trousers, brown hard felt hat with flat top ( ribbon of hat noticed to be very greasy). Speaks English fluently. Left behind him a note, stating his body would be found in the Thames. Was seen in Mortimer Street, on 21st ult., wearing black jacket and vest; other clothing as described. Identical with Paul de Cravant, a Frenchman, who was arrested at Liverpool, and tried at Manchester Assizes, 1886, for long firm frauds, and acquitted. On 7th December, 1888, he was before the Liverpool Magistrates, by warrant, charged with wounding a German woman, named Marian Bande, with whom he cohabited, and was remanded one day and dis- charged, when it is supposed they both left for London. A native of Naples. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For obtaining money by false pretences— WALTER BURNS, MB., L. R. C. S., age 38, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, eyes blue, of gentlemanly appearance; dress light dust- coat, dark trousers, high silk hat. Warrant issued. 4.— P Division.— For stealing £ 10 7s. Gd.— FREDERICK BEALES, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light, scars on left side of neck ; dress, brown dust overcoat, black diagonal vest, striped trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Diss, Norfolk. Absconded 20th ult. Warrant issued. 5.— T Division.— Woodcut portrait and de- scription of FRITZ HERMAN, a German, whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 20, cge 30, height 5 ft. 64 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and eyes brown, slouching gait, carries his head forward, a hotel porter, and may seek similar employment. 6. — V Division.— For obtaining money by means of fictitious cheques— JAMES BUBRELL, alias MILLS, ANDREWS, and TILLER, age 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( very thin on top) dark brown, moustache, thin face, high cheek bones, pimples on forehead ; dress, dark slate- colour suit and cap. Is accompanied by a won an, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, thin face, dress and bodies grey material, hat with black feathers, who joined Irm at Bournemouth on 3rd inst. Has with him a, tricycle or converiible tandem, which lie may try and sell. Wariant issued. 7. — Y Division.— For embezzling £ 16— ERNEST R. CLARKE, late of IS, Richmond- road, B.- trnsbnry, age 30, height 5 fr. 5 in., c unp'exion. hair, and n. ourtache dark, eyes 1 azel; drear-', dark suit, black round felt hat. His father resides at 21, Queen's- place, Shoreham, and his wife's father keeps a small wheelwright shop at Meopham, Kent, upon whom he may call. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 8.— For endeavouring to obtain £ 250 by false pretences— JAMES SAMUEL McDONAGH, M. D., late of 5, Austin Friars, E. C., and 5, Hawkwood Villas, Chingford, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion, hair, moustache and small side whiskers dark, square build, birthmark under right eye; dress, black frock coat and vest, light grey trousers, high hat. Absconded 24th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Reading ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to Bradfield Union, and taking away clothes belonging to the Guardians— JOHN HAYDEN, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion dark, hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes brown; dress, dark drab corduroy suit, water- tight boots, white cotton shirt, worsted stockings ( shirt and stockings marked 1C9). A native of Goring, Ox- fordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pocock, Reading. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 10.— Buckingham ( County). — For stealing, 28th ult., at East Claydon, a silver lever watch, seconds hands, nearly new, in metal case; a long silver guard- chain with swivel; 1 pair water- tight boots, square- headed nails in heels and soles, size 9 ( nearly new)— A man, known as THOMAS WHITE, age 40 or 45, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark, hair brown, whiskers and moustache about six weeks' growth, round shoulders, carries his head very drooping, lost top of right first finger; diess, old long dark coat, brown tweed trousers, patches on legs, soft black felt hat, piece sewn on top, and tho stolen boots, dirty appearance; a tramping labourer, sleeps in barns, Ac., on farms when in work. Shepherd, Buckingham. 11.— Great Marlow ( County).— For larceny ( bailee)— DAVID JOHN TYLER, watch and clock cleaner, age about 40, height 5 ft. 0 or 7 in., com- plexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and moustachc dark brown, wears a glass eye ( right), laige full face, large front teeth wide apart; dress, dark cloth suit, black or brown hard felt hat, generally carries a black bag containing watchmakers' tools. Supposed native of Clerkenwell, London. Is well known to Mr. J. Bryant, watch jobber, 9, St. Johu's- lace, Clerkenwell. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Summers, Great Marlow. 12.— Slough ( County).— For larceny— JOSE PH CHEESE, age 43. height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache black, eyes hazel; dress, dark speckled Martini- Henri suit, brown hiird felt hat, and army shoes, lately discharged from the Army Reserve ; supposed to have gone into Kent for the fruit picking. Native of Slough. Warrant issued. 13.— SlOUgh ( County).— For stealing, 24th ult., at Iver, 1 gold English lever watch, white dial, "( Hux, Piccadilly" thereon), raised flowers on out- side of case ; 1 gold albert, plain i- in. links, 2 bars inside links; 1 gold oval locket, Prince of Wales feathers raised on outside, slightly discoloured by a flare of candle; 1 lady's silver geneva watch, pin at bottom of case turning yellow— a woman named BENSON, age 50, height 5 ft. 2 in, complexion fair, hair ( turning grey) dark, pointed nose, narrow face, round shoulders, swerves when walking as if from rheumatics, addicted to drink; dress, brown skirt, black mantle, brown velvet bonnet, light bow in front, wears eyeglasses. She engages herself as a lady's companion. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutton, Slough. 14— Chepping Wycombe ( Borough).— For stealing, 26th nit., a ponv, curt and harness, ( re- covered) — WILLIAM BONNER, alias SCOTT, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 iu., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ( turning grey), slightly round- shouldered; dress, black or daik suit, black hard felt hat with flat top. Sup- posed native of Brixton, Surrey. He hired the horse and trap for a couple of hours, ostensibly to fetch luggage from the railway station, and afterwards sold them at Amersham, Bucks, from whence he is supposed to have booked to London. May be wanted for similar offences in other parts of the country. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sparling, Chep- ping Wycombe. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 15.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment— FREDERICK DAY, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes ( large) hazel, round full face; dress, old brown cloth coat, supposed new cotton cord trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. Has served in the Suffolk regiment, and now belongs to the Army Reserve. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Innes, Cambridge. DERBYSHIRE. 1G. — Ashbourne ( County). — For carnally knowing a girl under the age of 13— WILLIAM ROLAND RASTRICK, age 26, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair rather sandy, whiskers and moustache sandy, eyes grey, jaunty gait, springs on to his toes, turns right leg inwards; dress, supposed Hack diagonal worsted cloth coat and vest, light cloth trousers, hard brown felt hat, has also dark grey dust coat; a schoolmaster, and educated at Wesley College. Native of Halifax. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of tho United Kingdom at present. Information to Supt. Gill, Ashbourne. DORSETSHIRE. 17. — Beaminster ( County). — For stealing cattle and farm implements ( recovered) to the value of £ 167— ALFRED NORTON, a farmer, age 41, height 5 ft. 9i in, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, long dark whiskers, which may be cut off; generally dressed in brown mixture suit. A native of Stanton, St. Gabriel's, Dorset. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Freeman, Beaminster. DURHAM. 18.— Durham ( City).— Woodcut portrait and description of MAGNUS PATTISON IRWIN, a brewer's traveller, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 230— age 26 to 28, height about 5 ft. • r> or 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, moustache ( slight) and side whiskers light brown, eyes hazel, lost two teeth in front of upper jaw, scar side of forehead ; dress, when he absconded on 18th ult., light grey jacket suit, strong lace boots, black felt hat. Would have about £ 50 in his possession. A native of Hartlepool, where his parents reside at 30, Northgate. Has a sister residing at 72, Talbot- street. Alexandra- park, Manchester, and a cousin named Widdowtield, a jockey, at Malton. Four years ago he was employed us clerk with Messrs. C. H. Reid & Co., ironfounders, Sunderland, and when a youth was at sea for about 3 years. Frequents race meetings, and may be found in the company of betting men. ESSEX. 19.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing, at Chelmsford, 2nd inst., a pony, cart, and harness ( recovered) — WILLIAM BONNAR ( supposed false), age about 62 or older, height about 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion sallow, hair and whiskers grey, moustache a little darker, clipped short, shaved on chin, left side of mouth turned up, has a long tooth in upper jaw ( believed to be left eye- tooth), is very fond of taking snuff, and of port wine, appeared to walk a little lame, and used a brown walking stick with large knob at end; dress, black ribbed serge suit ( shabby), white indiarubber collar, black necktie, black soft billycock hat. He described himself as a coach- builder, of Church- street, Chelsea. Supposed identical with man described in Cases No. 75, 5th June ; No. 67, 12th June ; and No. 16, 3rd inst. Warrant issued. 20. — Chelmsford ( County). — For stealing, 1st inst., about £ 6 cash, consisting of 1 jubilee sovereign, 1 jubilee half- sovereign, 1 jubilee half- crown, 1 jubilee shilling, 1 jubilee sixpence, 1 five- shilling piece ( not jubilee), and 1 sovereign dated 1891 ; a white metal chain, glow- worm or snake pattern, with silver padlock attached; 1 pair flannel pants, with red band at top ; 1 white- handled razor, " Addy " supposed thereon ; 1 small razor- strop ; 1 lathering brush ; 1 pair low shoes with toe- caps ( recently soled and heeled) — EDGAR BRAND, alias RICHARDSON, JOHN BARNES, EDGAR RICHARDS, EDWARDS, and WILLIAM KNIGHT, age 20, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion fair, very sharp, thin features, hair dark brown, slight moustache and side- whiskers, eyes blue, dog's head tattooed left wrist, 3 dots back of left hand, large dot back of right hand, 2 moles centre of chest; dress, light coat and vest, dark striped trousers, black hard felt hat, and wearing the stolen shoes. Supposed native of Norwich. Was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment at Chelmsford Sessions, 19th February, 1890, on three charges of larceny at Ilford. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. FORFARSHIRE. 21.— Forfar ( County).— For stealing, 18th ulto. from a field at Grange of Barry, 8 cattle ( recovered)— A man, who gave his name and address as FRANK STEWART, of Lochee, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair ( pretty full behind) light brown, moustache light, stiff erect gait, long pimply face, 3 scars left side of neck, third finger right hand deformed, dissipated appearance, and seemed to have an affection of one eye, as he kept wiping it with his pocket handker- chief ; dress, dark summer overcoat, light check trousers ( long and tight), white neckerchief, old boots, hard felt hat, all very seedy. Had the appear- ance of a broken- down clerk. May endeavour to leave the country. For seven of the cattle he received a cheque for £ 99, which he subsequently cashed, receiving large notes of the Union Bank. Information to Chief Constable Adamson, Forfar. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 22.— Chipping Sodbury ( County).— For office- breaking, 21st ult., at Almondsbury, and steal- ing 4.9. worth of penny stamps— A man, supposed WILLIAM BOBBINS, or ROBB1NSON, age 35 to 40, height 6 ft., complexion swarthy, hair dark brown, eyes dark, long thin neck with large gullet, springing gait, rolls his eyes when speaking, keeps his teeth closed; dress, black coat, light trousers with brown stripe at sides, hard brown hat, thin lace boots, no vest. A labourer, supposed native of Norfolk. 3 Information to Supt. Critchley, Chipping Sodbury. LANCASHIRE. 23.— Rochdale ( Borough).— Vcr stealing, as a bailee, the sum of £ 573 — JAMES LOMAX TAYLOR, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, thin features, slightly bow- legged. An auctioneer and valuer; native of Rochdale. Was last seen on 24th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Wilkinson, Roch- dale. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 24.— Llanidloes ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Newtown and Llanidloes Union — EDWARD HUGHES, a collier, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( very curly) dark brown, small light moustache, is addicted to drink. Is supposed to be at work in the neighbourhood of Abercwmboy, Glamorganshire. Warrant issued. Information to Sergeant Humphries, Llanidloes. LEICESTERSHIRE. 25.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing, 6th inst., a silver geneva watch, white dial, blue steel hands, engine- turned cases, silver albert twisted links, double, with seal attached ; 1 pair gold cuff links, oval shape, flowers engraved thereon; 1 gold scarf pin, oval shape, gold bar across with flower thereon; 1 dark green small check tweed jacket, black lining, sleeves greasy ; 1 large blue silk hand- kerchief, white squares ; 1 large blue silk handker- chief, red border, flowered in centre— CHARLES HENRY HUNT, age 21, height 5 ft 10 in., clean shaved, peculiarity in right eye, which looks in- wards ; dress, long dark cloth overcoat, with small white speck, belt and flaps on cuffs, light striped . trousers ( worn at bottom), black billycock hat, sometimes wears a red cap with thin white stripe. He is by trade a fitter, but has latterly been engaged as a music- hall artiste. A native of Langley Mis- information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. NORFOLK. 26.— Norwich ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences— FRED CULLINGFORD, alias FREDERICK R. CULLINGFORD, age about 55, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, hair and moustache iron- grey, bald on top of head; dress, light suit, fawn- colour hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hitchman, Norwich. SHROPSHIRE. 27. — Bridgnorth ( County). — For larceny— HENRY LLOYD, age about 55, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair and side whiskers dark- brown ( turning grey), no moustache, clean shaved on chin; dress, dark sleeve waistcoat, dark trousers, strong lace boots, black billycock hat. A barge- man ; native of Jackfield, Salop. Likely to be found on canal boats, or in brickyards. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Bridgnorth. 28.— Shrewsbury ( Borough).— For stealing, 24th ult., a silver English lever watch ( sold at Bridgnorth) ; 1 coloured shirt, with neckband and cuffs white ; 1 white shirt, " G. Morris " on skirt; 1 pair pants ; 1 spotted silk handkerchief ; 3 pairs kid gloves ( 2 tan colour) ; 1 gold scarf pin, plain front; 1 blue and white scarf— HENRY ATKINSON, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hah- ( very curly) sandy, lisps, shows his teeth one side of mouth; dress, dark coat and vest, dark plaid trousers, strong lace boots, brown hard felt hat. Is wearing the stolen pin, but has a common one, shape of a violin. Stated he was a valet from Liverpool. Left behir. d him a stolen bicycle. Is a travelling thief. Information to Chief Constable Blackwell, Shrewsbury. SOMERSETSHRE. 29.— llminster ( County).— For stealing a pair of men's lace boots, hob nailed, tips on heels ; a purse and 2s. 9d.; and a key— WILLIAM LAWRENCE, age 25, height 5 ft. 9 in. in boots, complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey, slightly pockmarked; dress, brown check tweed jacket, black cloth vest, dark trousers, double peak cap, and the stolen boots- A corporal in the 2nd battalion Somerset Light In- fantry, No. 225, and is now in Army Reserve. Native of Lydford, Castle Cary, Somerset; absconded 2nd inst.; supposed gone to Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Self, II minster. WILTSHIRE. 30.— Devizes ( County).— For stealing a silver geneva watch ( recovered)— ALEXANDER TRA. Y- LEN, age about 32, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complex- ion dark, Tiali1 black, small side whiskers and moustache ( may have shaved), eyes brown, wounds in front [ of both legs, squeaking voice ; dress, blue serge suit, and close fitting cap of same material. A working jeweller, native of Downton, Wilts. Carried a small black bag containing tools. Warrant issued. Information to Supt Baldwin, Devizes.
