All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB op THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD LONDON, S. W. ' Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all eases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. Od. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature Of an officer oj not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to le inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, Vie requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as ' the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must le guaranteed ly an officer of not less rank HEGS- TJIJ- A. TX03XR3.. than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In ail cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicn may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, ly cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must bi used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to propi rt/ stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid 011 its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Fores at which Notices can be posted. AITimEIIENSION SOUGHT, METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— D DIVISION.— Woodcut portrait and description of PAUL ACHETON, alias ASHTOJN, a Frenchman, whose apprehension is sought for the murder of a woman, on 21st ult. Description:— Age 28, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair, and long moustache fair ( may now be clean shaved), eyes dark, is near- sighted, and walks with a peculiar rolling gait; dress, grey jacket, striped irousers, brown hard felt hat with flat top ( ribbon of hat noticed to be very greasy). Speaks English fluently. Left behind him a note, stating his body would be found in the Thames. Was seen in Mortimer Street, on 21st ult., wearing black jacket and vest; other clothing as described. Identical with Paul de Cravant, a Frenchman, who was arrested at Liverpool, and tried at Manchester Assizes, 1886, for long firm frauds, and acquitted. On 7th December, 1888, he was before the Liverpool Magistrates, by warrant, charged with wounding a German woman, named Marian Bande, with whom he cohabited, and was remanded one day and dis- charged, when it is supposed they both left for London. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 2.— E Division.— For embezzling £ 2 16s. 0d — HERBERT ST. CLAIR McGATH, Supervisee Office No. 37756, age 41, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes blue, scar outside right knee, mole inside right arm; dress, light tweed suit, high silk hat. Warrant issued. 3— J Division.— For stealing, at Leytonstone, 23rd ult., a bay mare, 15 hands, white star on fore- head, chipped knees, sand- cracked off hind foot, with clasp to hold from opening, scar on chest, black mane and tail; a set of brass- mounted harness ( odd bridle), and a tradesman's chocolate colour cart, picked out red, " Gildersleeve" on side— TWO MEN : 1st, height 5 ft. 5 in., Rtout, complexion fair ; dress, brown overcoat, cord trousers, black hard felt — 2nd, cannot be described. Had with them a dirty- grey pony, and a costermonger's barrow containing tinware. 4.— K Division.— For embezzling £ 25— JOHN EYANS, commercial traveller, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair, side whiskers and moustache light, eyes blue, broad nose and forehead; dress, light tweed overcoat, dark under- coat, dark tweed trousers and vest, hard felt hat. A native of Romford, Essex. Absconded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. 5. — S Division.— For embezzling £ 6— AL- FRED H. MOORE, alias FARRANT, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache ( slight) dark, eyes dark blue, of gentlemanly ap- pearance ; dress, black diagonal morning coat and vest, black cloth trousers. A native of Paddington. May seek employment at workhouses as clerk or salesman. Warrant issued. 6. — T Division.— Woodcut portrait and de- scription of FRITZ HERMAN, a German, whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 20, age 30, height 5 ft. 6| in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and eyes brown, slouching gait, carries his head forward, a hotel porter, and may seek similar employment. 7. — T Division.— For stealing, 18th ulto., 3 watches:— 1st, a gentleman's silver English lever, No. 1319, maker " Savage " ; 2nd, a lady's gold hori- zontal, No. 68024, maker " Savage"; 3rd, a lady's plain gold geneva, bow repaired; a gentleman's gold curb pattern albert chain ; 2 gold rings :— 1st, a keeper, " Mizpah " ; 2nd, fancy, set two turquoise with pearl in centre— FREDERICK PHILLIPS, alias FREDERICK COWARD, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, clean shaved ; dress, black reefer jacket and vest, mixture striped tweed or cord trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. Native of Bradford, near Trowbridge, Wilts, Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 8.— For endeavouring to obtain £ 250 by false pretences— JAMES SAMUEL McDONAGH, M. D., lato of 5, Austin Friars, E. C., and 5, Hawkwood Villas, Chingford, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion, hair, moustache and small side whiskers dark, square build, birthmark under right eye; dress, black frock coat and vest, light grey trousers, high hat. Absconded 24th ult. Warrant issued. 9.— Woodcut portrait and description of JAMES JOHNSON, alias BERKLEY, HUMPHRIES, and NORTON, whose apprehension is sought for stealing a large quantity of jewellery, consisting of gold and silver brooches, ear- rings, lockets, & c., value £ 600— Age 47, height 6 ft., complexion pale, hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache ( turning grey) dark, small dark eyes, scar right side of forehead, very large deformed feet, through bunions, which cause him to stoop and walk with difficulty, broad shoulders, thin build; dress, dark mixture suit, hard felt hat. Has served two terms of penal ser vitude, and is now a convict on license. Absconded 23rd ult., and may endeavour to go to America. Wairant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 10.— Reading ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to Bradfield Union, and taking away clothes belonging to the Guardians— JOHN HAYDEN, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion dark, hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes brown ; dress, dark drab corduroy suit, water- tight boots, white cotton shirt, worsted stockings ( shirt and stockings marked 169). A native of Goring, Ox- fordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pocock, Reading. 11.— Wokingham ( County).— For stealing at Twyford, on 22nd ult., a Coventry- made tricycle, " Starley and Sutton, Coventry" on a plate on back- bone, two lamp irons attached to seat, 40- inch driving wheels, spoon break on off wheel, treadles bound with wire.— JOHN RATCLIFFE, age 12, height about 4 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, much freckled ; dress, brown jacket, black- and- white striped trousers, brown single peak cap, old and dirty. Has an uncle, George Stewart, residing at Billericay, Essex, and another at Rayleigh, near Southend, also an aunt, Mrs. Gould, at 13, Park- row, Nottingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Atkin, Wokingham. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 12. — Buckingham ( County). — For stealing, 28th ult., at East Claydon, a silver lever watch, seconds hands, nearly new, in metal case; a long silver guard- chain with swivel; 1 pair water- tight boots, square- headed nails in heels and soles, size 9 ( nearly new)— A man, known as THOMAS WHITE, age 40 or 45, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark, hair brown, whiskers and moustache about six weeks' growth, round shoulders, carries his head very drooping, lost top of right first finger; dress, old long dark coat, brown tweed trousers, patches on legs, soft black felt hat, piece sewn on top, and the stolen boots, dirty appearance; a tramping labourer, sleeps in barns, & c., on farms when in work. Shepherd, Buckingham. 13.— Great Marlow ( County).— For larceny ( bailee)— DAVID JOHN TYLER, watch and clock cleaner, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and moustache dark brown, wears a glass eye ( right), large full face, large front teeth wide apart; dress, dark cloth suit, black or brown hard felt hat, generally carries a black bag containing watchmakers' tools. Supposed native of Clerkenwell, London. Is well known to Mr. J. Bryant, watch jobber, 9, St. John's- lane, Clerkenwell. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Summers, Great Marlow. 14.— SlOUgh ( County).— For larceny— JOSEPH CHEESE, age 43, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache black, eyes hazel; dress, dark speckled Martini- Henri suit, brown bard felt hat, and army shoes, lately discharged from the Army Reserve ; supposed to have gone into Kent for the fruit picking. Native of Slough. Warrant issued. 15.— SlOUgh ( County).— For stealing, 24th ult. J at Iver, 1 gold English lever watch, while dial, " ( Hux, Piccadilly " thereon), raised flowers on out- side of case ; 1 gold albert, plain i- in. links, 2 bars inside links; 1 gold oval locket, Prince of Wales feathers raised on outside, slightly discoloured by a flaro of candle; 1 lady's silver geneva watch, pin at bottom of case turning yellow— a woman named BENSON, age 50, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair ( turning grey) dark, pointed nose, narrow face, round shoulders, swerves when walking as if from rheumatics, addicted to drink; dress, brown skirt, black mantle, brown velvet bonnet, light bow in front, wears eyeglasses. She engages herself as a lady's companion. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutton, Slough. 16.— Chepping Wycombe ( Borough).— For stealing, 26th ult., a pony, cart and harness, ( re- covered) — WILLIAM BONNER, alias SCOTT, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ( turning grey), slightly round- shouldered; dress, black or dark suit, black hard felt hat with flat top. Sup- posed native of Brixton, Surrey. He hired the horse and trap for a couple of hours, ostensibly to fetch luggage from the railway station, and afterwards sold them at Amersham, Bucks, from whence he is supposed to have booked to London. May be wanted for similar offences in other parts of the country. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sparling, Chep- ping Wycombe. DERBYSHIRE. 17. — Ashbourne ( County). — For carnally knowing a girl under the age of 13— WILLIAM ROLAND RASTRICK, age 26, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair rather sandy, whiskers and moustache sandy, eyes grey; jaunty gait, springs on to his toes, turns right leg inwards; dress, supposed black diagonal worsted cloth coat and vest, light cloth trousers, hard brown felt hat, has also dark grey dust coat; a schoolmaster, and educated at Wesley College. Native of Halifax. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom at present. Information to Supt. Gill, Ashbourne. DORSETSHIRE. 18. — Beaminster ( County). — For stealing cattle and farm implements ( recovered) to the value of £ 167— ALFRED NORTON, a farmer, age 41, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, long dark whiskers, which may be cut off; generally dressed in brown mixture suit. A native of Stanton, St. Gabriel's, Dorset. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Freeman, Beaminster. FORFARSHIRE. 19.— Forfar ( County).— For stealing, 18th ulto. from a field at Grange of Barry, 8 cattle ( recovered)— A man, who gave his name and address as FRANK STEWART, of Lochee, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair ( pretty full behind) light brown, moustache light, stiff erect gait, long pimply face, 3 scars left side of neck, third finger right hand deformed, dissipated appearance, and seemed to have an affection of one eye, as he kept wiping it with his pocket handker- chief ; dress, dark summer overcoat, light check trousers ( long and tight), white neckerchief, old boots, hard felt hat, all very seedy. Had the appear- ance of a broken- down clerk. May endeavour to leave the country. For seven of the cattle he received a cheque for £ 99, which he subsequently cashed, receiving large notes of the Union Bank. Information to Chief Constable Adamson, Forfar. FRIDAY, JULY 3, 1891. NV GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 20. — Chipping Sodbury ( County). — For office- breaking, 21st ult., at Almondsbury, and steal- ing 4s. worth of penny stamps— A man, supposed • WILLIAM ROBBINS, or ROBB1NSON, age 35 to 40, height 6 ft., complexion swarthy, hair dark brown, eyes dark, long thin neck with large gullet, springing gait, rolls his eyes when speaking, keeps his teeth closed; dress, black coat, light trousers with brown stripe at sides, hard brown hat, thin lace hoots, no vest. A labourer, supposed native of Norfolk. Information to Supt. Critchley, Chipping Sodbury. KINCARDINESHIRE. 21— Stonehaven ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of ANDREW MILNE HENDER. SON, whose apprehension is sought for forgery and uttering, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., slender build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy dark moustache, long thin face, abscess mark left of neck, left arm deformed through an operation ; dress, dark brown check tweed jacket suit, black hard felt hat, light lace boots, drab- coloured overcoat. He served his apprenticeship as a bank clerk, and afterwards visited Calcutta, where he has a brother. He worked his passage home as a seaman. Has been engaged in the fish trade at Gourdon for the last 3 years, which place he left 30th May. May endeavour to leave the country and take an engagement as a seaman. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. " Information to Chief Constable George, Stone- haven. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Ormskirk ( County). — For stealing a white holland apron, & c.—" JANE," age about 18, height 4 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair worn in long plait down back and tied with ribbon, light brown, fringe on forehead, eyes grey, has very good teeth; dress, black skirt, red bodice, red- and- white barred apron, grey shoulder shawl, and clogs, no hat or bonnet. Supposed native of Bradford near Manchester. Stated she had walked from Bradford to Burscough along the canal bank. Was last seen in Wigan. Information to Supt. Jervis, Ormskirk. 23.— Rochdale ( Borough).— Fcr stealing, as a bailee, the sum of £ 573 — JAMES LOMAX TAYLOR, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, thin features, slightly bow- legged. An auctioneer and valuer; native of Rochdale. Was last seen on 24th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Wilkinson, Roch- dale. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 24.— Llanidloes ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Newtown and Llanidloes Union — EDWARD HUGHES, a collier, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( very curly) dark brown, small light moustache, is addicted to drink. Is supposed to be at work in the neighbourhood of Abercwmboy, Glamorganshire. Warrant issued. Information to Sergeant Humphries, Llanidloes. age 19, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, full features, hair brown, eyes hazel, quiet appearance, and looks on the ground when spoken to; dress, dark brown check tweed suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A labourer; native of Ovington, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Knights, Watton. 26.— Great Yarmouth ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 20th ult., a bay mare, aged, 14 hands 2 in., black points, square tail, has not been docked ; a set of brass- mounted harness, false collar, double throat lash to bridle, four- ring bit; a shooting cart, painted dark, lined yellow, patent axle, brass tug stops, holes in dash- board where lamp irons have been removed, cocoa- matting in bottom, skin rug and plaid knee rug, black whalebone whip, silver ferrule, ivory handle— ALLEN YOUNG ( supposed false), age about 55, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, hair and moustache iron- grey, bald head; dress, light suit and fawn- coloured hard felt hat. Had with him a black cloth overcoat and a black patent- leather handbag. Information to Chief Constable Brogden, Great Yarmouth. docks. Supposed previously convicted and wanted for other ofFences. Information to Supt. Brinson, Aldershot. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 32.— Beverley ( Borough).— Remanded till 6th inst., for fraud, & c.— FRANK WILLIAM FRYER, alias JOHNSON and SPENCER, age 22, height ft. 10| in., slight build, complexion fair, hair ( curly) brown, very slight light moustache, eyes grey, roman nose; dress, black double- breasted serge jacket with silk facings, grey striped tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, of gentlemanly appearance. Stated that he was a commercial traveller, and that his father resides at 1, Morland- road, Sutton, Surrey. Information to Head Constable Knight, Beverley. SHROPSHIRE. 27.— Bridgnorth ( County).— For stealing, 29th ult., a safety bicycle, " popular Rover," thick ball head, plain pedals, rubber foot rests, plunger brake, handles square bent instead of circular, " J. R. Star- ley & Co., Coventry," thereon— HARRY ATKIN- SON, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) sandy, lisps, shows his teeth one side, and appears to have had a blow there; dress, dark coat and vest, dark plaid trousers, hard hrown hat, strong lace boots, wore a scarf pin of good quality, gentlemanly appearance, takes respectable private lodgings, fond of cricket and lawn tennis. Native of near Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Bridgnorth. SUSSEX ( EAST). 28.— Ore ( County).— For rape— FREDERICK HOLLANDS, age 19, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., rather stout, complexion and hair dark, crossed eyes ( looks outward); dress, dark coat, dark cord trousers, white wrapper round neck, black cap with shiny peak. A native of Halton - place, Hastings. Absconded 11th ulto., and may endeavour to work his passage abroad. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brookham, Ore, Hastings. NORFOLK. 25.— Watton ( County).— For indecently assault- ing, 9th ult., a girl, age 15— ALBERT CALVER, YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 29.— Hull ( Borough).— For stealing, 24th ult., a black reefer jacket bound with silk braid, and a longish dark grey overcoat— A MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., sunburnt, light moustache, long at ends, smart appearance; dress, dark grey suit, black hard hat. He took lodgings at an hotel, stating he was a commercial traveller, leaving 2 bogus parcels behind. Information to Capt. Gurney, Chief Constable, Hull. YORKSHIRE ( NORTH RIDING). 30. — Northallerton ( County). — For office- breaking, 29th ult., at Newbywiske Railway Station, and stealing £ 1 9s. 9d.— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache brown; dress, grey or drab overcoat, dark trousers, black hard felt hat, shabby- genteel appearance; spoke with a north country accent, Supposed to have in his possession a pocket knife, with about half- an- inch broken off blade. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hutchinson, Northallerton. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. HAMPSHIRE. 31. — Aldershot ( County). — Committed for trial at the next Assizes, at Winchester, on 30th inst., for burglary— a mau, giving the name of JOHN BROWN ( supposed false), age 42, height 5 ft. in., without shoes, complexion sallow, hair and eyes grey, scar on left cheek, brown mark back of right shoulder.
