All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should ie addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in oneissue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of lbs. per portrait, and of Is. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. C. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to beinserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. T. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. REGULATIONS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted t » the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicfi may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " DrummondSf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. (&) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the . reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C. I. Department. — Woodcut portrait and description of ROBERT RUTTER, alias WRIGHT and WILSON, whose apprehension is sought for conspiracy and fraud, age 61, height 6 ft. 1 in., stout build, very broad shoulders, com- plexion fresh, hair, moustache, and beard dark grey, full face ; dress, usually Scotch tweed suit or black clot h. He is a magsman, and frequents race meetings, occasionally making a book. Is well known at Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, and Reading, and is said to have been convicted of larceny by confidence trick, on the last occasion at Kings Lynn. Norfolk, where he was sentenced to a months imprisonment in April last. Warrant issued. 2.— K Division. — For committing a violent assault, on 20th ult.— GEORGE HORNCASTLE, alias STOCKHOLM, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in , complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light; dress, brown coat, dark trousers and vest, black hard felt hat. A packing- case maker, native of London. Is thought to be working at a factory at St. Albans. Has served in a cavalry regiment. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. 3. — E Division. — ARTHUR DEAN, No. 2, 22nd ult., not to be apprehended. Warrant withdrawn. Case AYRSHIRE. 4.— Ayr ( Burgh).— Absconded from the Boys' Industrial School, Ayr, on 6th inst— JAMES MON- TEITH, age 14, height 4 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, prominent nose; dress, brown tweed jacket and vest, corduroy trousers, blue and white striped shirt stamped " Nc. 16, Ayr Boys' Industrial School," grey socks, stamped " No. 16," lace boots. Was born in Belfast, and admitted to School from Hamilton, on 19th April, 1886. His father, William Monteith, a labourer, has resided at Euglish Buildings, Craig Newton, Motherwell. Information to Supt. McKay, Police Chambers, Ayr, or to Supt. Ross, Industrial School, Ayr. BEDFORDSHIRE. 5.— Bedford ( Borough). — For burglary, 31st ult., and stealing 1 small piece of pure gold, i small piece of rough honeycomb gold, 1 small micro- scope with ring attached, and about 17s. in money — PATRICK BROOKS, a private of the 16th Regiment of Foot, age about 19, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes light blue, faintly tattooed above left wrist, scar on forehead and right upper arm ; will probably have changed his uniform for plain clothes. Native of St. Martin's, Wolverhampton. Informition to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. CHESHIRE. 6.— Chester ( City). — Absconded on 2nd inst., taking with her some of the clothing belonging to the Female Home of which she was an inmate— ELIZA ANN HOLT, age 15, stout build, com- plexion very pale, hair light, rather thick lips, grey dtess, Ac., belonging to the Home. Was sent to prison early in the year from Sandbach, where her father then resided. Formerly of Dark - lane, London- road, Manchester. It is requested that inquiry be made at work- houses, refuges, Ac. Information to Chief Constable Fenwick, Town Hall, Chester. DEVONSHIRE. 7. — Torrington ( County). — For stealing £ 4 4s, larceny ( bailee) — DAN or DANIEL O'DONOHUE, age about 31, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light, face blotched from drink; dress, dark coat and vest, dark striped trousers ( may have " Boyle, Bideford " on buttons), hard bowler hat. Supposed native of Bideford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Buchanan, Torrington. ESSEX. 8. — Brentwood ( County).— For stealing coals ( recovered)— EDWARD HAWKINS, a carpenter, age about 40, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, whiskers and moustache sandy; dress, black pilot jacket, heavy lace boots, black hard felt hat. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 9.— Neath ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and £ 6 16s. 9il. by means of a fictitious cheque— J. D. EDWARDS ( supposed false), age about 45, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion swarthy, hair ( cut close) very dark, walked as if paralyzed left side, spoke with a slight London accent; dresfi, light check suit, and light bowler hat. May be found at an hotel at some seaside resort. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thomas, Neath. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 10.— Gloucester ( County).— For stealing a pony ( recovered) — WILLIAM JORDAN, alias ARTHUR JORDAN, HENRY WILLIAMS, and CHARLES NICHOLLS, a saddler, age 45, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, clean shaved, pockmarked, scar right elbow and arm, ulcer scar right shin, flesh wart under left shoulder blade, scar bend of left elbow, wrist, and back of left thigh; dress, dark blue or green dust coat, stitched round collar and cuffs, dark suit, trousers fit tight similar to stablemen's, hard howler hat, lace boots with pointed toes. He is a notorious horpe stealer. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 11.— Alton ( County).— For larceny— THOMAS CR1TTLE, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, short whiskers and mous- tache, inclined to be sandy, eyes blue, thumb of one hand slightly injured on top; dress, dark jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, " with large patch of a darker material on seat, cream- colour wrapper with brown stripe forming squares, lace boots, tipped and nailed, black hard felt hat. Supposed native of Sittingbourne, Kent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rapkins, Alton. 12.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing, 27th ult., 2 silver bracelets, 2 in. wide, encircled with 2 rows of pointed studs and filigree work; 1 silver and red coral baby's rattle, with 5 silver bells; 1 gold seal with bloodstone, engraved lion with laurel leaf in mouth, and underneath a shield with 2 liens and 4 bars ; 1 scent- bottle, cut glass, silver- gilt top ; Ismail agate box li in. wide and long, A MAN, age about 19, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair light, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, brown coat and vest ( patches of white paint on coat), black and white check trousers, black hard felt hat, brown leather shoes. Supposed a deserter from the army. Information to Supt. Catchlove, Gosport. KENT. 13.— Dartford ( County). — For burglary at Crockenhill, Eynsford, on 31st ult., and stealing a metal keyless watch, maker " Perry, Viaduct, London"— THOMAS GREEN, age 43, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, scars on back of neck, eyebrows, centre of forehead, and left cheek, has a peculiar look about one eye; dress, old grey cloth jacket, coloured neckerchief, dark cloth cap with fancy stitching on peak, knob on top. Is a notorious and dangerous thief, and was convicted at West Kent Sessions, Maidstone, on 17th October, 1884, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude for fowl stealing. Is accompanied by a man, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair, and mous- tache dark ; dress, dark mixture suit, cloth cap with peak and kuob on top. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. 14.— Sittingbourne ( County).— For stealing a pony and cart ( recovered)— JAMES NEIL, age about 65, height about 5 ft. 3 in., hair and eyes grey, is very talkative and fond of taking snuff and offering it to others; dress, black cloth overcoat, Balmoral boots, black soft felt hat. A wheelwright; native of Tunbridge Wells. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mayne, Sittingbourne. 15.— Margate ( Borougli). — Woodcut portrait and description of WILLIAM BRANDLEY, late stationmaster of the South Eastern Railway, whoEe apprehension is sought for embezzlement— Age 50, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, whiskers and moustache cut close ( may shave), scar on bridge of nose, slightly knock- kneed, is fond of drink and gambling ; when last seen he was dressed in blue cloth overcoat, single- breasted, velvet collar, with letters " S. E. Ry." worked in silk thereon, blue cloth trousers with braid on legs, silk hat. Was seeu at Victoria Station, London, at 12 noon, 29th ult., when he was dressed as described, and he then stated that he was going to the Oaks races. Is supposed to have had in his possession at that time about £ 20. He has two brothers in business at Bidden, and two daughters married, one to a man named Weiderman, in the public- house trade, either at Wolverhampton or Maidenhead, and one to a booking clerk on the Great Western Railway, name and station unknown. May endeavour to go to America, where he has two sisters. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Margate. 16. — Tunbridge Wells ( Borough). — For fraudulently obtaining a cheque for £ 100, in January, 1890— HARRY S. STRANGE, age 32, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark. A native of Tunbridge Wells. He has a London office at 29 and 30, King Street, Cheapside, and has been living at Southwold, Suffolk. At one time he was secretary of a financial paper called " The Lighthouse." Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Embery, Tunbridge Wells. KINCARDINESHIRE. 17.— Stonehaven ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of ANDREW MILNE HENDER- SON, whose apprehension is sought for forgery and uttering, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., slender build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy dark moustache, long thin face, abscess mark left of neck, left arm deformed through an operation ; dress, dark brown check tweed jacket suit, black hard felt hat, light lace boots, drab- coloured overcoat. He served his apprenticeship as a bank clerk, and afterwards visited Calcutta, where he has a brother. He worked his passage home as a seaman. Has been engaged in the fish trade at Gourdon for the last 3 years, which place he left 30th ult. May endeavour to leave the country and take an engagement as a seaman. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable George, Stone- haven. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Manchester' ( City).— For embezzlement — JOE CAM, alias CLARKE and NEILL, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, eyes blue, smart appear- ance, full face, is very sociable; dress, double- breasted heavy light- brown tweed reefer jacket, dark- brown check tweed trousers and vest, square- toed boots, black felt hat with small rim. Warrant issued. 19.— Manchester ( City).— For embezzlement — WILLIAM STREET, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, whiskers and mous- tache light brown, eyes brown. His wife jind family reside at Percy- road, Birmingham. Warrant issued. 20.— Manchester ( City).— For embezzlement — GEORGE WILLIAM MASON, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., completion fresh, hair brown, whiskers and moustache dailc, eyes dark. Is accompanied by his wife and three children. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Manchester. 21.— Salford ( Borough).— For robbery with violence— WILLIAM FLETCHER, alias SOLDIER, and STRONG ARM B RUMMY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion sallow, pockmarked. He escaped from custody whilst being con- veyed to the police station at 1 a. m., 6th inst., leaving behind a moleskin coat, cardigan jacket, vest, and muffler, which he was wearing at the time. A native of Wolverhampton. Information fo the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Salford. 22.— Bolton ( County). — MAN, Case No. 51, 5th inst., not to be apprehended. LEICESTERSHIRE. 23.— Leicester ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 1,000 by false pretences, on 17th March last— GEORGE A. ASHBY, age 23, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, wears eye- glasses, and sometimes wears a light striped vest. He frequents good hotels and smoking- rooms. Supposed to be a native of Lincolnshire, but has lately been residing at Quenby Hall, Leicestershire. He may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE, 24.— Lincoln ( City).— For stealing, 23rd ult.— 2 cart horses; 1, 4 years, 17 hands, white star ou forehead, 1 white hind foot, short tail; the other chesnut, 7 years, 16 hands, white streak down face, rather long tail, both in good condition, and branded on one fore hoof with the city shield— A MAN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., full red face, aat nose, very little ( if any) whiskers ; dress, dark cait, long plaid vest, with large smoked pearl buttons, tight- fitting cord trousers. He booked the horses from Peterboro' to King's Cross, 28th ult., and rode in the box with them. Information to Chief Constable Mansell, City Police, Lincoln. 25.— Boston ( Borough). — For intimidation — FREDERICK MILLINGTON, a dock labourer, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and hair ( turning grey in patches) dark ; dress, generally in dark cloth or cord railway jacket, cord trousers, dark cap. A native of Boston. Warrant issued. 26.— Boston ( Borough).— For intimidation and assanlt— WILLIAM BLOOM, a dock labourer, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair ( rather long) sandy, very powerfully built, slightly bow legged, walks slovenly; dress, pilot jacket or white duck jacket, fustian trousers, Scotch cap with peak, red neckerchief. A native of Boston. Information to Head Constable Bellamy, Boston. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 27.— Newtown ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable., to the LlanfylHn Union— URIAH MO RRALLEE, age 4], FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1891. NORFOLK. 28— Terrington ( County).— For housebreaking at Walsoken, 1st inst., and stealing £ 4 10s. gold; £ 5 10s. in silver; a deposit receipt for £ 7 on National Provincial Bank, and an old- fashioned silver stop- watch, silk guard with bronze crank key attached, watch paper insido with rose worked in silk— A MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light, square stiff build, prominent mouth, teeth very white; dress, fustian jacket, light- coloured cloth trousers mended at both knees, white and dark spotted guernsey. Information to Supt. Parr, Terrington, St. Clement. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 29.— Northampton ( County).— For larceny ( dwelling) ISAAC BODILY, a discharged soldier, age 35, height 5 ft. 4f in. complexion fresh, oval visage, hair dark brown, eyes grey, pimple on chin, scar right side of head, man's face tattooed left forearm, " T " left wrist, scar inside right thigh ; < lress, short dark tweed jacket and trousers, brown vest, with black and white stripes, black- and- white plaid scarf, army boots, black hard felt hat. A native of Everdon, Northamptonshire. Warrant issued. 30. — Northampton ( County). — For house- breaking, at Upton, 18th ult., and stealing a lady's silver geneva watch, No. 58528, chased back, much worn, white dial, gold hands, gold edging round dial, initials " J. H. S." engraved inside case; a dark tweed pepper- and- salt mixture vest; a pair of old Army blucher boots ; a black leather purse, with steel fastenings ; 2 grey woollen shirts, with white stripes ( nearly new)— A tramping shoefinioher, age about 21, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion sallow, hair and thin moustache dark ; dress, dark jacket, torn at elbows, stolen vest and boots, dark cord trousers, hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Alexander, Northampton. NORTHUMBERLAND. 31.— Newcastle- upon- Tyne ( City). — For stealing the sum of £ 13 8s.— JOHN GRAY, late detective superintendent in this force, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 in. ( without shoes), stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey and cut short) brown, eyes grey, slight moustache; dress, blue overcoat with velvet collar, invisible check black melton coat and vest, round hard felt hat. A native of Northum- berland. Absconded 22nd ulto. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- npon- Tyne. OXFORDSHIRE. 32.— Caversham ( County).— For obtaining £ 6 by false pretence, on 29th April last— ALBERT EDWARD BURGIS, alias COLEMAN, veterinary surgeon, late of 87, Queens- road, Caversham, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown, moustache sandy, eyes light brown or grey, scar on right side of upper lip, one tooth deficient in upper jaw left side, knuckle bone of third finger left hand has been injured; dress, mixture tweed overcoat, new black ribbed cloth coat and vest, light striped trousers, lace boots, black plaid felt hat, wears a gold ring ou little finger right hand. A native of Whitchurch, Hampshire. He represents himself as a veterinary surgeon, late of the 16th Lancers, and last 12 months of the East Surrey Regiment, Kingston- on- Thames. Fre- quents chemists' shop, drug stores, military and volunteer head- quarters, and public houses. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Janaway, Caversham. £ 1 REWARD. 33.— Henley- on- Thames ( County). — For deserting his wife and family — FREDERICK GODLEY, age 38, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair slight, moustache and side whiskers dark, large scar left wrist; dress, black short jacket, cord trousers, hard felt hat; a bricklayer; native of Henley- on- Thames. Supposed to be working in the neighbourhood of Aldershot. Absconded 8th April. The above reward will be paid by Mr. A. R. Lloyds, Clerk to Henley Guardians, for the arrest of Godley. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Keal, Henley- on- Thames. ROXBURGHSHIRE. 34.— Hawick ( Burgh).— For stealing a single case silver lever watch, white dial, steel hands ( no seconds), black chapters. — A man known as GEORGE SMITH, alias THOMSON, and LYNCH, age about 34 or 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion swarthy, round face, hair dark, moustache dark brown ; dress, dark coat, vest, and trousers, dark broad crowned cap, with one peak. A poacher. Is accompanied by a woman who he states is his wife, has 2 children, 3 years and 18 months respectively. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Macdonald, Hawick. SOMERSETSHIRE. 35.— Bath ( Borough).— For stealing, 27th nit., 1 lady's silver geneva watch, open face; 1 gentle- man's silver geneva international globe watch, open face ; 1 gentleman's silver geneva watch, open face, dent on edge of back case, glass broken, and about £ 1 in silver— MOORE, alias SMITH, age 30 to 35, height about 5 fc. 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache ( heavy) light brown, eyes ( very weak and watery) brown, large flat nose, rather broad shoulders, turns his toes out; dress, light brown dust coat, dark coat, vest and trousers, light brown hard bowler hat, blue tie, white turn- down collar.
