All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED LONDON, S. W. ' 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought mill le inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reicard is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of lbs. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature Of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. A nnouncements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. REG- TJXjATIONS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ l may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must le in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co." Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. - Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied ' will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. ( C) ( d) 2.- NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward biils, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of criire. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— A Division. — Woodcut portrait and des- cription of WILLIAM SPARROW, whose appre- eye3 grey, stout build, smart and gentlemanly appearance. Warrant issued. 3.— L Division.— For manslaughter — JOHN McCORMACK, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, moustache sandy, hair dark brown, eyes blue, slightly pockmarked; dress, dark clothes, bine melton overcoat with velvet collar, a card sharp and pugilist. 4. — N Division. — Woodcut portrait and description of FREDERICK MAUDE, a surgeon, hension is sought for stealing about £ 75 in English and foreign money, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes dark brown, an abscess mark both sides of throat, swaggering gait, is addicted to drink; dress, grey morning coat and vest, grey and black striped trousers, black felt hat. A native of Stoke D'Abernon, Surrey. Warrant issued. 2.— E Division.— Woodcut portrait and de- scription of CHARLES WOODLEY, whose appre- hension is sought for embezzlement and forgery, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, side whiskers and moustache ( slight) light brown, whoso apprehension is sought for failing to surrender to his bail for indecent asssault and inciting boys to acts of indecency— age 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion sallow, pockpitted, slight side whiskers and moustache dark brown ; dress, plaid suit, side- spring boots, liaid felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BANFFSHIRE. 5.— Banff ( County).— For forgery and uttering at Aberlour— NORMAN SPENCE, age 16, tall and slender, complexion and hair dark, mole on left cheek; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest, dark striped moleskin trousers, white linen front, blue tie with sailor knot, strong lacc boots, and dark cap. He has been employed as a clerk in Edinburgh and resided with his uncle at 42, Bread- street. Is a cyclist, and may be found travelling on a cycling machine. Warrant issued. WESTLAKE, a tramping clock cleaner, age 36, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, hair, side whiskers, and moustache dark brown, very full eyes; dress, black coat, brown cardigan Jacket, striped trousers. A native of Exeter. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Songhurst, Barnstaple. ESSEX. 8. — Brentwood ( County).— For stealing coals ( recovered)— EDWARD HAWKINS, a carpenter, age about 40, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, whiskers and moustache sandy; dress, black pilot jacket, heavy lace boots, black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 9.— Neath ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and £ 6 16s. 9d. by means of a fictitious cheque— J. D. EDWARDS ( supposed false), age about 45, height abor. t 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion swarthy, hair ( cut close) very dark, walked as if paralyzed left side, spoke with a slight London accent; dress, light check suit, and light bowler hat. May be found at an hotel at some seaside resort. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Thomas, Neath. 10.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 2& th ult. — 1 lady's silver geneva watch, No. 37942 ; 1 lady's silver albert, with tassel attached ; 1 gentleman's ahiminium gold watch, horse's head and flowers en- graved on works; white metal chain with 4J. piece, 10 cent piece, and silver seal attached; 1 lady's 9- carat gold dress ring, crystal in centre and 2 rubies each side ; 1 lady's 9- carat gold dress ring set 3 crystals; 1 brass ring with large crystal; 1 lounge jacket and vest of fancy navy blue, worsted stripes like braid woven therein; 1 pair trousers, alternate black, dark blue and greyish- blue stripes— a man who gave the name of FREDERICK NEWMAN, a seaman, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., thin build, hair dark brown, clean shaven, eyes dark, thin face, long neck ; dress, blue double breasted pilot cloth coat and vest, black worsted trousers, flat blue cloth cap, with long peak, white turn down collar, blue tie with white spots, red socks, brown shoes ; supposed native of Plymouth ; was accompanied by a light brown long- haired Scotch collie dog named " Mirk." Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff HAMPSHIRE. 11.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing, 27th ult., 2 silver bracelets, 2 in. wide, encircled with 2 rows of pointed studs and filigree work; 1 silver and red coral baby's rattle, with 5 silver bells; 1 gold seal with bloodstone, engraved lion with laurel leaf in mouth, and underneath a shield with 2 liens and 4 bars ; 1 scent- bottle, cut glass, silver- gilt top ; 1 small agate box in. wide and long, A MAN, age about 19, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair light, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, brown coat and vest ( patches of white paint on coat), black and white check trousers, black hard felt hat, brown leather shoes. Supposed a deserter from the army. Information to Supt. Catchlove, Gosport. KENT. 12.— Dartford ( County).— For burglary at Crockenhill, Eynsford, on 31st ult., and stealing a metal keyless watch, maker " Perry, Viaduct, London"— THOMAS GREEN, age 43, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, scars on back of re- sk, eyebrows, centre of forehead, and left cheek, has a peculiar look about one eye; dress, old grey cloth jacket, coloured neckerchief, dark cloth cap with fancy stitching on peak, knob on top. Is a notorious and dangerous thief, and was convicted at West Kent Sessions, Maidstone, on 17th October, 1884, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude for fowl stealing. Is accompanied by a man, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair, and mous- tache dark ; dress, dark mixture suit, cloth cap with peak and kuob on top. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. £ 1 REWARD. 13.— Faversham ( County). — For ill- treating and neglecting his child— ROBERT BRUTY, age 40, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache dark, eyes hazel; dress, dark brown coat, cord trousers, dirty brown cap with peak. A labourer. Native of Rodmersham. Sometimes works with thrashing machines, and in brickfields. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of Milton Union for the apprehension of Bruty. Information to Supt. Mayne, Sittingbourne. 14. — Tunbridge Wells ( Borough). — For fraudulently obtaining a cheque for £ 100, in January, 1890— HARRY S. STRANGE, age 32, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark. A native of Tunbridge Wells. He has a London office at 29 and 30, King Street, Cheapside, and has been living at Southwold, Suffolk. At one time he was secretary of a financial paper called " The Lighthouse." Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Embery, Tuubridge Wells. LANCASHIRE. 15.— Old Trafford ( County).— For obtaining 2 pairs of boots by means of a trick on 22nd ult.— A WOMAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- plexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, of good address ; dress, black jacket buttoned with one button at top, green serge dress, braided across body, black gloves, brown turban hat trimmed with red ribbon. She selected the boots at a shop and ordered them to be sent to her lodgings, where she obtained possession of them, and under the pretence of trying them on left the room, and was not again seen. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. LEICESTERSHIRE. 16.— Belgrave ( County).— For stealing £ 2 in bronze from tramway boxes at Belgrave on 24th ult.— JOHN ADAMS, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache brown, bald on top of head, rolls his eyes when talking, front teeth decayed and broken ; dress, dark mixture tweed jacket ( patched under left arm), dark vest and trousers, black felt hat, all much worn. May seek employment at tramway depots or livery stables. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormiston, Belgrave. LINCOLNSHIRE, 17.— Lincoln ( City).— For stealing, 23rd ult.— 2 cart horses; 1, 4 years, 17 hands, white star on forehead, 1 white hind foot, short tail; the other chesnut, 7 years, 16 hands, white streak down face, rather long tail, both in good condition, and branded on one fore hoof with the city shield— A MAN, age 40 to 4- 5, height 5 ft. 10 in., full red face, flat nose, very little ( if any) whiskers ; dress, dark coat, long plaid vest, with large smoked pearl buttons, tight- fitting cord trousers. He booked the horses from Peterboro' to King's Cross, 28th ult., and rode in the box with them. Information to Chief Constable Mansell, City Police, Lincoln. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 18.— Llanidloes ( County).— RICHD. EVANS, Case No. 41, 29th ult., not to be apprehended. Warrant withdrawn. 19.— Newtown ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Llanfyllin Union— URIAH MORRALLEE, age 41, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes blue, upper front teeth project. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Newtown. NORFOLK. 20.— Terrington ( County).— For housebreaking at Walsoken, 1st inst., and stealing £ 4 10s. gold; £ 5 10s. in silver; a deposit receipt for £ 7 on National Provincial Bank, and an old- fashioned silver stop- watch, silk guard with bi'onzo crank key attached, watch paper inside with rose worked in silk— A MAN, oge about 26, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light, square stiff build, prominent mouth, teeth very white ; dress, fustian jacket, light- coloured cloth trousers mended at both knees, white and dark spotted guernsey. Information to Supt. Parr, Terrington, St. Clement. NORTHUMBERLAND. 21.— Newcastle- upon- Tyne ( City). — For stealing the sum of £ 13 8s.— JOHN GRAY", late detective superintendent in this force, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 in. ( without shoes), stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey and cut short) brown, eyes grey, slight moustache; dress, blue overcoat with velvet collar, invisible check black melton coat and vest, round hard felt hat. A native of Northum- berland. Absconded 22nd ulto. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Newcastlo- upon- Tyne. OXFORDSHIRE. 22.— Caversham ( County).— For obtaiuiug £& by false pretence, on 29th April last— ALBERT EDWARD BURGIS, alias COLEMAN, veterinary surgeon, late of 87, Queens- road, Caversham, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown, moustache sandy, eyes light brown or grey, scar on right side of upper lip, one tooth deficient in upper jaw left side, knuckle bone of third finger left hand has been injured; dress, mixture tweed overcoat, new black ribbed cloth coat and vest, light striped trousers, lace boots, black plaid felt hat, wears a gold riDg ou little finger right hand. A native of Whitchurch, Hampshire. He represents himself as a veterinary surgeon, late of the 16th Lancers, and last 12 months of the East Surrey Regiment, Kingston- on- Thames. Fre- quents chemists' shop, drug stores, military and volunteer head- quarters, and public houses. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Janaway, Caversham. £ 1 REWARD. 23— Henley- on- Thames ( County). — For deserting his wife and family — FREDERICK GODLEY, age 38, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair slight, moustache and side whiskers dark, large scar left wrist; dress, black short jacket, cord trousers, hard felt hat; a bricklayer; native of Henley- on- Thames. Supposed to be working in the neighbourhood of Aldershot. Absconded 8th April. The above reward will be paid by Mr. A. R. Lloyds, Clerk to Henley Guardians, for the arrest of Godley. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Keal, Henley- on- Thames. SOMERSETSHIRE. 24.— Bath ( Borough).— For stealing, 27th nit., 1 lady's silver geneva watch, open face; 1 gentle- man's silver geneva international globe watch, open face ; 1 gentleman's silver geneva watch, open face, dent on edge of back case, glass brokeD, and aboat £ 1 in silver— MOORE, alias SMITH, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache ( heavy) light brown, eyes ( very weak • and watery) brown, large flat nose, rather broad shoulders, turns his toes out; dress, light brown dust coat, dark coat, vest and trousers, light brown hard bowler hat, blue tie, white turn- down collar. Carried a bundle of papers in his hand, and repre- sented liipiself to be an agent for the Prudential Insurance Company. May call on insurance agents. Information to Lieut.- Col. Gwyn, Chief Con- stable, Bath. 25.— Bridgwater ( Borough).— For burglaTy, and stealing a pair of white opera glasses, a pair of boots and a dark blue reefer jacket— A MAN, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, moustache sandy; dress, light brown suit, black hard felt hat. Information to Head Constable Lear, Bridgwater. SURREY. 26.— Guildford ( Borough).— For deserting his family— THOMAS EARP, costermonger, age 25, TUESDAY, MAY 26, 1891. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 5 height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes bine, nearly whole of left ear cut off. A native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Berry, Guildford. SUSSEX ( EAST). 27.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For stealing, 1st inst., a small white metal keyless geneva watch, seconds hand, chased back, small silver chain with watch- key and threepenny- piece attached, and a man's black diagonal jacket and vest— A man, known as " LAYTON," age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sunburnt, hair ( bald on lop of head), moustache and slight imperial, light brown, turning grey, eyes brown, walks with his head down, and generally with hands in trousers pockets; dress, black jacket and vest, light trousers with dark stripes, white collar, light tie with dark spots, light lace boots with toe- caps, brown hard felt hat. Information to Chief Constable Fraser, East- bourne. WARWICKSHIRE. 28.— Birmingham ( City).— Woodcut portrait and description of JOHN WEBB, alias GALLETT WEBBE, GEORGE BURKE, and JOE or CHARLIE GARRICK, whose apprehension is sought for maliciously wounding a police constable, 29th ult.; age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, white speck right eye, scar left eyebrow and loft ear, scald mark right forearm, thistle, shamrock, leaves, and anchor left arm, half of left thumb- nail missing, cut mark right first finger, broad shoulders, powerfully built, of good physical appearance, and has been in the Army; dress, shabby brown coat and vest, with black thread running through it forming a square, lavender or blue faded cloth trousers, black and white stripe muffler, lace boots. He is a notorious rough and a pro- fessional pugilist, and travels with boxing booths from fair to fair. Has been several times convicted of violent assaults on police. May be found in the company of low prostitutes. A native of Birming- ham. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Bir- mingham. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. WORCESTERSHIRE. 29.— Great Witley ( County).— For stealing 18s.— A man known as " PRINCE," age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair dark drown, rather large red nose, stubby beard. A bricklayer, native of Shropshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pugh, Great Witley. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 30.— Leeds ( County).— For stealing a horse ( recovered)— A man who gave the name of JOHN BARKER, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, whiskers under chin, otherwise clean shaved, lost upper front teeth, slightly pockpitted; dress, dark suit, lace boots, black billycock hat. Appeared to be fond of singing in public houses. He gave his address as Cemetery- road, Bradford, which on enquiry was found to be fake. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stansfield, West Riding Constabulary, Leeds. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 31.— L Division.— Committed for trial at Cen- tral Criminal Court, 29th inst., for highway robbery with violence— GEORGE LESTER, alias LYSTER, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and small moustache, and eyes dark, 5 small moles left arm, 2 on right, wart on throat, scar nose ; dress, dark arm, mixture coat and vest, brown tweed trousers, brown hard felt hat, lace boots.— ALBERT GORMAN, alias GINGER GORMAN, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, anchor left arm, indistinct mark right, several cut scars back of head; dress, light stripe jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, felt hat, lace boots. Native of Lambeth.— JAMES DAVIS, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, anchor, 5 dots, and square left arm, dot middle finger left hand, mole left cheek, scar bridge of nose; dress, dark coat and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. These men are expert race- course thieves, and have been convicted in the provinces for ticket- snatching and assaults. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CUMBERLAND. 36.— Penrith ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions at Carlisle for house- breaking— WILLIAM MOORE, a bottle maker, age 27, height 5 ft. 7\ in., complexion swarthy, hair ( cut short) dark, moustache light brown, eyes bine, scar back of head ; dress, dirty brown ragged cloth jacket, dark tweed vest, dirty moleskin trousers, lace boots, dark greasy cap with peak. A native of Blaydon, Durham. Information to Supt. Russell, Penrith. BEDFORDSHIRE. 32.— Sharnbrook ( County).— Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions at Bedford, 1st July, for stealing a sheep— SAMUEL WATSON, alias WESTOVER, WALVERTON, PARNELL, and PRICE, a tramping labourer, age 3G, height 5 ft. 9^ in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar on forehead, right hip, and left shin, mole left side of neck ; dress, grey coat, dark trousers, light brown hard felt hat. A native of Elsworth, Cambridge shire. Information to Inspector Cain, Sharnbrook.
