Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the FOLIOS GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted m one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. I. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of etolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 0. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature ofanofficer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. T. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. S. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number and are alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be ineertedim the POLICE OAZBTTB, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicA maq result from such publication. 11. A nnouncements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later tham noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They tnuet be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by • covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed iu relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. S. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will he paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Station> of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— D Division. — For stealing, 17th inst., £ 9 15s. bd.— F. B."— LAZAR BASCH, alias LAZARUS BASCH, a native of Hungary, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown inclined to ginger, nose broad at point, full thick neck, holds his head down when walking, speaks English fairly well, may be dressed in blue jacket suit. Has with him a large box, two carpet bags, and a large parcel. A jeweller's traveller. Since 27th nit. he has passed through Bath, Bristol, Clevedon, Weston- super- Mare, Wells, Shipton Mallet, Yeovil, and at Southampton, at which places he has probably pawned some of the articles. Warrant issued. 5.— N Division.— Woodcut portrait and description of FREDERICK MAUDE, a surgeon, whose apprehension is sought for failing to surrender to his bail for indecent asssault and inciting boys to acts of indecency— age 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion sallow, pockpitted, slight side whiskers and moustache dark brown ; dress, plaid suit, side- spring boots, haid felt bat. CITY OF LONDON. 6. — For forgery — HERBERT FIRTH, late of 59, Mark- lane, E. C., and 5, Upper Bedford- place, W. C., age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., com- plexion pale, hair and moustache black, is inclined to be bald, long face, high forehead ; dress, black frock coat and vest, dark trousers, high hat, of gentlemanly appearance. A perfumer's agent; native of Austria. Had with him a brown leather portmanteau and gladstone bag. Absconded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. 7 _ For embezzling upwards of £ 200— HENRY COWLISHAW, late of 4, Lordship- grove, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion very dark, hair ( cut short) dark brown, small dark moustache, full round face; dress, black double breasted reefer jacket with silk facings, dark striped trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Stoke Newington. Absconded 7th inst. Warrant issued. 8— For forgery — JACOB FRANZ, a German, late of 38, Charles- street, Hatton Garden, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair and small moustache black, very thin, speaks very little English ; dress, cutaway coat and vest, dark trousers, high hat. Had with him a tin trunk and a black portmanteau ; also had in his possession three £ 5 Bank of England notes, No. 76851- 2- 3, dated 11th December, 1890. Abconded 27th ult. Warrant issued. 9.— For embezzlement— GOLDIE VAUX BEN- SON, age 33, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, well built, good looking; dress, black overcoat, black serge jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, felt hat. BEDFORDSHIRE. 10.— Biggleswade { County).— For assaulting police— JAMES NORTHFIELD, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., rather stout build, complexion dark, hair brown, peculiar cast in eyes, long nose, sharp features ; dresses sometimes in a dirty slop, and at other times in pilot jacket. A native of Patton, Bedfordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Smith, Biggleswade. BERKSHIRE. 11— Maidenhead { County).— For indecently assaulting a girl, age 6— WILLIAM GARDENER alias " SOLDIER," an army reserve man, age 32 to 35, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, bald on top of head, wound on one leg ( supposed right) ; dress, dark jacket, light moleskin trousers and vest, lace boots, black hard felt hat; frequents common lodging- houses. Is known at Wokingham and Marlow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 12.— Reading { County).— For assaulting police, 18th ult.— GEORGE MEADE, age30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel — JOHN MEADE, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion sallow, hair brown, eyes dark.— CHARLES MEADE, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes grey; all are dressed in navvies' clothes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pocock, Reading. 13.— Woki ngham { County).— Woodcut portrait and description of WILLIAM CUTLER, a corn and coal merchant's traveller, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 11 14s. 6d., on 2nd ult., age ' about 37, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( slightly bald on top), moustache, and beard sandy, eyes light blue, slight scar on bridge of nose," very offensive breath ; dress, light large- pattern check suit, drab mackintosh ( sleeves have been lengthened and joined above wrist), lace boots, brown bowler hat. Absconded 2nd ult., and may endeavour to leave the country, for Canada or the United States. A na'ive of Binfield, Berks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Atkin, Wokingham. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 14.— Isle Of Ely { County).— For stealing money at March, on 29th ult.—" JIMMY," age 50 to 53, height about 5 ft. 3 in., clean shaved, hair nearly grey, eyes weak and watery, sickly- looking, stoops slightly, slavers when talking, of dirty appearance ; dress, old dark coat, black greasy vest, cord trousers, with marks of leggings at bottom, blucher boots, black hard felt hat. He calls upon clergymen and others for work in gardens. Has been traced into Lincolnshire. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Burrows, March. CUMBERLAND. 15. — Carlisle { County).— For disobeying an order in bastardy— JOSEPH METCALF, age about 26 or 28, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, full features. A stonemason. Native of Carlisle. Is believed to be married and his wife residing in Edinburgh. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Graham, Carlisle. DEVONSHIRE. 16.— Barnstaple { County).— For stealing, 15th ult., at Ilfracombe, 2 leather purses, containing £ 11 in gold— ANNIE MURPHY, age 25, short, complexion fair, hair very dark ( has been cut short, and now growing), eyes ( weak) dark; dress, black - and - white stripe bodice, black skirt, plain black stockingette jacket, bound with black braid, black bone buttons half way down in front, small black sailor hat, trimmed with black ribbon, thick lace boots; wears small pearl brooch. Native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hobbs, Barnstaple. 17.— Exeter { City).— For laroeny { lodgings)— LUCY GILL, alias ANGEL, age 20 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( cut short and parted at side) dark brown, eyes hazel, heavy dark eyebrows, teeth much decayed, cut mark left forefinger; dress, plain black dress, black double- breasted jacket, small black sailor hat, black gloves, boots worn at heels, small black brooch, respectable appearance. Her modus operandi is to obtain private lodgings, by representing that she is the daughter of a well known tradesman of an adjoining town, and has either lost her purse or missed the train. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Court House, Exeter. 18.— Devonport { Borough).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the parish of Stoke Damerel— WILLIAM HENRY MOORE, age 33, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, hair, moustache, and side whiskers dark, thin face, very red and blotchy, has peculiar eyes, one being black, the other grey, large scar behind right ear, husky voice; dress, dark blue short overcoat, black diagonal coat and vest, striped trousers, black hard felt hat; carried a black mackintosh. Had with him a large yellow tin trunk, a new leather portmanteau, a sugar box, with " Tate's Cube Sugar" thereon, and a basket containing a light brown suit, a suit of 2nd Devon Volunteer uniform, and two clarionets. Has served in the 11th Devon Regiment, and was lately employed as toll collector in the Devonport Market. Absconded 24th March. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Evans, Devonport. ESSEX. 19.— Brentwood { County).— For stealing, 7th inst, at Romford— 1 meerschaum and amber cigar- holder, egg and claw pattern; 1 amber cigar- holder and 1 amber cigarette holder, small piece broken off end, square pattern, both in one case; 1 imitation gold albert, small pattern, with key and seal attached; and £ 15 gold and silver.— A MAN, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., slender build, complexion, fresh, smart appearance; dressed as a midshipman, but supposed to be a London thief. He engaged lodgings in the house for 3 weeks, but stayed only one night, leaving by train for London the following morning. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. 20. — Saffron Walden { County). — For embezzlement — HENRY COTTELL, age 46, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache light brown, chin shaved, eyes grey, thin face, thick lips, fingers ( supposed left hand) contracted; dress, dark clothes and hard felt hat. A coach builder. Native of Saffron Walden. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Saffron Walden. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 21.— Cardiff { Borough).— For stealing a pony ( recovered) on 19th ult.— HARRY STAMP, alias " JONICHER," a horse- coper, age about 60, height 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, whiskers and moustache grey ( may have shaved), thin face and lips, nose much marked by smallpox, walks lame, the effects of a broken leg. May be found at low public- houses, and in company of low horse- dealers at fairs. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 22. — Fishponds { County). — For stealing 1 lady's silver genova watch, open face, silver dial and steel hands; 1 silver chain, curb pattern; 1 silver seal ( grey stone); 1 old foreign silver coin, supposed date 1811; 1 silver necklace, star each link, small tab hanging; 1 silver locket, small dent on back, No. 2169; 1 pair trousers, brown stripe; and I black diagonal vest. — WILLIAM COX, age 45, htight 5 ft. in., complexion tanned, hair brown, moustache ginger, tuft on chin, eyes blue, crossed flags, anchor, and line back of right hand, schooner right wrist, bracelet and barquentine left arm; dress, dark overcoat, brown stripe trousers, hard bowler hat, red linen inside, maker Turner, Hull, Oxford shoes. He obtained lodgings and decamped with the above property. Has been convicted 3 times at Hull for similar offences. Native of Oxford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Fishponds. HEREFORDSHIRE. 23.— Hereford { City).— For stealing a canvas bag containing £ 57 10s. gold and 30*. silver— HANNAH REARDON, age 34, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion dark, hair very dark brown, large dark eyes, has lost the greater part of front teeth in upper jaw ; dress, black dolman mantle, brown stuff dress ( too short for her), strong boots, bonnet and fall. A native of Abersychan, near Pontypool. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Richardson, Here- ford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 24.— Hertford { County).— For housebreaking, at Newgate- street, 12th ult., and stealing a sovereign and jubilee half- crown— WILLIAM HART, nick- name " TOPPER," age 37, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion, hair, whiskers ( rather bushy) and mou- stache dark, supposed scar under one ear, apparently from burn; dress, long dark overcoat, cord trousers ( fastened below knee with string or straps), light neckerchief tied in sailor's knot, heavy lace boots, TUESDAY, MAY 26, 1891. KENT. 25.— Folkestone ( Borough) •— For deserting his • wife and child— MAURICE WOODS, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, slight moustache, eyes blue, thick lips, high forehead, peculiarly- shaped head. Has been employed at the Albert Docks, and lodged at Lady Ashburton's Sailor's Home, Canning Town. Is now supposed to be employed on a tram- car at East Greenwich, and said to be known at Thames street, North Woolwich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Town Hall, Folke- stone. 26.— Tun bridge Wells ( Borough).— For em- bezzlement — HENRY KEMP, alias JUMBO, a baker, age 23, height 5 ft., hair and moustache light, thin face, has a peculiar walk. Was employed here by a firm of mineral water manufacturers as carman. Is known at Eastbourne, and supposed to be in some town in Kent or Sussex. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Embery, Tun- bridge Wells. KERRY. 27.— Killarney ( County).— For committing wil- ful and corrupt perjury at Magonihy, Killarney, on 10th February last— JAMES MANNING, age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, round face, hair ( turning grey) sandy, short side whiskers, no moustache, eyes grey, stooped shoulders, lost three front teeth; dress, grey sack coat, grey trousers and vest, black hard felt hat. Looks like a well- to- do farmer. A native of Meath. Formerly worked at Liverpool and Manchester, and may have gone there again to look for employment. Warrant issued. Information to District Inspector Hill, Killarney. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Bolton ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee JANE JONES, alias ELIZA and ELIZABETH FISHER, Office No. 41312, age 28, height 4 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes brown, vaccination marks on each arm, small scars each side forehead and on nose. Sentenced at Salfoid 14th April, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. Information to Supt. Eatough, Bolton. 29.— Leigh ( County).— For stealing, 2Cth nit., a gentleman's silver chronograph watch, centre secondR, white dial, steel hands; a man's brown, blue, and grey mixture tweed jacket, brown buttons, blue striped cotton lining in sleeves, body lining dark brown; a dark brown plaid tweed vest, brown buttons, black- and- white cotton lining; a black hard felt hat marked " M. T." in ink on leather lining; a pair of men's side- spring boots, broad toes, size 8, newly soled and heeled; a white cotton muffler; and two white pocket handkerchiefs— A man, who lodged in the house and gave the name of RICHARD HODGSON, age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) dark, lost little finger of one hand ; dress, mixture tweed coat ( skirts rather long), black and brown tweed trousers and vest, lace boots ( worn low at toes), either the stolen hat or light plaid cap with peak. Was employed with Sedwick's circus as lamp- man. Stated his father keeps a chip potato, tripe, and oyster shop in or near Bradford. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 30.— Accrington ( Borough). — For stealing 16s. 7d. on 9th inst.— A MAN, who gave the name of John Watson, a painter, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache dark brown, rather prominent eyes, face bloated, double- chinned; dres?, dark clothes, new shoes or boots, billycock hat. He goes about the country, generally staying at common lodging houses, and lias been frequently employed by contracting painters at railway stations. Warrant issued. 31— Accrington ( Borough). — For stealing shoemaker's tools, viz.:— 9 double irons, 1 waist iron, and 1 seat wheel, on 29th ult.— JAMES KNOWLES, age about 40 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache grey, red bloated nose; dress, dark blue serge jacket, dark trousers, brown billycock hat, may be wearing a white apron. He is a shoemaker, and a member of the Shoemaker's Club. May be accom- panied by a woman, and found at common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accring- ton. 32.— Salford ( Borough).— Supervisee ELIZA- BETH SKEATS, Office No. 35731, Case No. 24, 15th Februarv, 1889. Not now wanted. Supervisee" JAMES NEWBY, Office No. 35082, Case 79, 13th March last. Since dead. LEICESTERSHIRE. 33.— Belgrave ( County).— For obtaining money by means of forged cheques, at Aylestone Park— HUGH TUDOR JONES, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, round face; dress, brown overcoat, dark mixture coat and trousers, black hard felt hat, usually wears leggings. A car- penter or builder ; native of Penrhyn, Wales. Has been a sub- contractor on sewage works at Aylestone Park. Warrant issued. Information to Supt.
