All announcement! for insertion in the POLICB GIZETTL, and all communications ypon them should be addressed to THB EDITOB O » THI POLIOB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. I. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enabl* the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. I. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to bs inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolenproperty bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Tht force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to th* Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicA may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must he clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. AU. payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond $ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or im Stamps. 13. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. ( C) ( d) NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. (£>) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. NOTICE. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.—" WILSON, JENNER & Co , The British and Foreign Debt Recovery and Accountancy Offices." Attention is again requested to the notice about this firm, which appeared in the POLICE GAZETTE of the 13th, 20th, and 27th February. It has since been ascertained that the man who carries on this business is one DAVID HARDIE, living at Creek End, Chertsey- road, Shepperton, and he has lately moved his office to 63, Outer Temple. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 2. — C Division. — Woodcut portrait and description of W. G. CLIFFORD, a clerk, whose apprehension is sought for larceny ( servant), age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion florid, hair ( curly) dark brown, moustache light brown ; dress, dark morning coat and vest, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. Is known at Tilehurst, near Reading, where his mother resides, and also at Reading. " Warrant issued. 3.— G Division— For stealing £ 29 — JAMES CODMAN, a draper's manager, age about 33, height 5 ft. G in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue, clean shaven; dress, dark grey overcoat with band, black coat and vest, tweed trousers, low black felt hat. A native of Walsingham, Norfolk, where he may visit his relations. Absconded 30th ulto. 4.— K Division.— For obtaining money by fraud, on seamen's worthless advance notes— JOHN 1IARNWELL, alias ERNEST EDWARD HARN- WELL, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes grey, bow- legged, scar on forehead; dress, dark cutaway coat and vest, striped trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A native of Plais- tow, Essex. Warrant issued. 5.— P Division.— For embezzling £ 2 5s., 16th ult. — WILLIAM JOHN TRUDGETT, age 23, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light, moustache and side whiskers carroty, eyes blue; dress, black overcoat, dark suit, sometimes wears a high silk hat, and at other times a black hard felt hat. A native of Diss, Norfolk. Warrant issued. 6.— T Division.— For stealing a silver geneva watch, " 1st Prize, Paris Exhibition" on inner case, silver albert, long links and small rings alternately, with sovereign purse attached, and £ 2 15s. 6d. silver— JOHN TUCKER, age 20, height 5 ft, 11 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes grey, blotched face, stoops; dress, dark blue ovi rcoat, black diagonal under ditto and vest, grey mixture striped tweed trousers, check peak cap. A native of Cullompton, Devon. Absconded 30th ulto. Information to be forwarded to the Metrjpolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 7— Wokingham ( County). — For embezzling, 2nd inst., £ 11 14s. 6d., and other sums— WILLIAM CUTLER, a corn and coal merchant's traveller, age about 37, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( slightly bald on top), moustache, and beard sandy, eyes light blue, slight scar on bridge of nose, veiy offensive breath; dross, light large pattern clirck suit, drab mackintosh, sleeves have been lengthened and joined above wiist, brown bowler hat, lace boots. Absconded 2ud iust., and may endeavour to leave the country for Canada or the United States. Native cf Binfield, Berks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Atkin, Wokingham. 8.— Reading ( Borough). — For stealing, 1st inst., a " Monarch " clipper tricycle, 36- in. driving wheels, 28- in. steering wheel, black tyres on driving wheels, and red tyre on steering wheel, painted black, lined with red and green, bright parts plated, No. 240 stamped on top of handle- bar, " The Monarch, J. Warrick, Monarch Cycle Works, Reading," in gold transfer on main tube— A MAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, moustache light brown ; dress, light cloth suit and brown hard felt hat. Stated he was employed at the Reading Theatre ( false), and gave to several persons, in exchange for various articles, tickets or cards purporting to be passes to the play at the Theatre; " T. G. Morville, Theatrical Agent," was written on one side, and on the other, " Kindly pass 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 18P 1. Bearer and Friend, Dress Circle, Thursday or Friday.— T. G. M." BRECONSHIRE. 9.— Brynmawr { County).— For stealing £ 5 from a houso where lie lodged one night— A man who gave the name of JO UN PENNINTON, age abont 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark, hair black, small dark moustache, eyebrows meet, lost middle finger of one hand ; dress, grey and black plaid suit, laco boots, grey and black plaid cap. Stated he was a native of Glasgow, and that he was employed as telegraph repairer at Brynmawr Rail- way Station ( false). Absconded 27th ult. Information to Serjeant Williams, Brynmawr. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 10.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For shopbreaking, 1st inst., and stealing a lady's black satin bodice, trimmed with jet beads; a black serge bodice, trimmed with black braid; a pink woollen wrap ; and 3s. in farthings— TWO MEN : 1st, age about 4- 5, height 5 ft. 7 in., rather thin build, complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) brown, supposed slight moustache; dress, dark overcoat and black felt hat. 2nd, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, round full face, small moustache; dress, dark clothes. They left behind a small and nearly new common black portmanteau, bound with brown leather, a formidable steel jemmy ( new), and a painter's old knife. Information to Chief Constable Innes, Cambridge. DERBYSHIRE. 11— Chapel - en - le - Frith ( County). — For stealing jewellery ( Case No. 51, 13th ult.)— THOMAS WHITING, alias CULLE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, moustache slight, figure of a woman tattooed on one arm, and heart with spear through on the other; dress, dark ribbed overcoat, grey navvy's jacket, black vest, grey trousers, blue neck- erchief, with round white spots, hard felt hat. A navvy. Supposed native of Birmingham. May seek work on new railways or other public works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hallam, Chapel- en- le- Frith. 12.— Derby ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of WILLIAM SMITH PORTER, alias 13.— Derby ( County).— For stealing £ 1 3s. 10id., 11th ult., at Littleover— JOHN SALT, a farm- servant, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 or G in., complexion, hair, and moustache light, boil mark right of neck; dress, white slop, fustian trousers, grey stripe cap, white neckerchief, heavy nailed boots. Native of Denstone, Staffs. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hunter, County Police Office, Derby. ESSEX. 14.— Brentwood ( County).— For stealing postal orders for 30s. — WILLIAM WHITE, age 29f, height 5 ft. 5]- in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar left groin, 2 scars over same. A native of Great Bergholt, Essex. He is a deserter from the 3rd Batt. Essex Regiment. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. 15. — Southend ( County). — For stealing a watch- chain ( recovered), and a silver locket and chain, 1st inst.— BEATRICE HUNTLEY, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair dark brown, eyes hazel, red face, walks quickly, very stout build; dressed in black, having recently lost her husband. A laundress. Supposed native of Ipswich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. 21.— Ledbury ( County). — For burglary at Colwall, 28th ult., and stealing a piece of beef j a wild rabbit; a yellow dish, containing lard ; a large red muffler, with white spots; and a pair of men's- nailed boots, with toe- caps, three or four nails out of the toe of right boot— TWO TRAMPS, lat, age about 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., beard sandy; dress, short dark jacket, moleskin trousers, black cap; supposed wearing the stolen boots. 2nd, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in , complexion dark; dress, long overcoat, moleskin trousers, black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Cope, Ledbury. HERTFORDSHIRE. 22.— Hitchin ( County).— For using snares to take game, and assaulting gamekeepers at Kings- walden and Offley, on 1st November, 1890 — ALFRED BUTTERFIELD, age 33 or 34, height 5 ft. G in. without shoes, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar on nose; dressed as a labourer. A native of Luton, Bedfordshire. GEORGE TAYLOR, alias GEORGE THOMAS TAYLOR, age about 25, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, long face, ring tattooed first, second, and third fingers left hand, birth- mark right blade- bone ; dressed as a labourer. A native of Luton, Bedfordshire. These men are notorious poachers, and may he- committing offences in other districts. Warrant issned. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitchin. FLINTSHIRE. 1G.— Mold ( County). — For embezzlement — THOMAS PERRY, age 35, height about 6 ft., complexion sallow, hair and eyes brown, walks with a long slow stride and bends forward at knees, long legs ; dress, black cloth jacket, cloth vest with yellow stripes, fustian ribbed trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. Is used to farm- work, attend- ing horses, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Bolton, Mold. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 17.— Gloucester ( County). — For stealing a gold wedding- ring and a gold keeper- ring ( the latter recovered) — CHARLES HENRY BEST, age 23, height 5 ft. 8J; in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache ( slight) light eyes grey, dot tattooed back of right hand ; dress, dark jacket and vest, brown stripe trousers, dark brown bowler hat, blue tie with red stripe, black and red muffler, nailed boots. Native of Gloucester. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester. SHIRLEY WYNNE, CHARLES GREGORY, HENRY WOODS, GEE, GALLOWAY, and EDWARD ELLIS, a solicitor's clerk, late of New- market, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining £ 50 by means of bogus deeds at Long Eaton, 4th ult., age 36 ( looks older), height about 5 ft. or 3 in., complexion dark sandy, bloated, pimpled face, red nose, hair brown, large drooping moustache sandy, thick eyebrows, sharp piercing eyes, large head; gentlemanly appearance and good address, jocular, though of serious appearance when not in conversation, short, quick step, carries left hand in trousers pocket, swings right arm freely. Fre- quents good hotels, and is fond of bitter beer. Wears eye glasses with gold thread attached. He has a book of cheques on " Messrs. Smiths' Bank, Long Eaton," and also one on " London and County Bank, Maidstone," but has no account at either. Native of Hilgay Fen, Isle of Ely. It is requested that bankers be informed of this man, and that ho bo detained, should he present any of the above cheques, or spurious deeds. - Warrant issued. HAMPSHIRE. 18.— Gosport ( County). — For stealing, 20th ult.— 1 large silver spoon ; 3 silver dessert spoons; 3 silver forks; and 1 silver tea spoon, all old- fashioned silver with double bevel on handle, and engraved with crest— raven with two wings in crown ; 1 silver afternoon tea spoon, twisted handle, with figure of a man at end— A MAN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., whiskers and beard ( short) white; dress, brown or grey suit, brown hat; carried a green case containing combs and buttons, which he hawks. Information to Supt. Catchlove, Gosport. 19.— Petersfield ( County).— For rape, atBram- shott, 5th inst.— A TRAMP, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, supposed short stubby dark beard, bruise on one hand ( sup- posed left) where he was bitten by the woman he assaulted; dress, brown coarse tweed frock coat, dark trousers, boots much worn, and walks on the outside of left, black haul felt hat, all old and shabby. Information to Inspector Miller, Pctersfield. LANCASHIRE. 23.— Bolton ( County).— For failing to report Supervisee ALBERT GREENHALGH, alias WM. ROBINSON and JOHN STONES, OiliceNo. 32552, age 28, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, proportionate build, suffering from painful affection of one ear. Sentenced at Salford, 23rd May, 1881, to 7 years penal servitude, and 7 years police supervision, for felony. H 549. Information to Supt. Eatough, Bolton. 24.— Leigh ( County).— for stealing from a child at Newton- le- Willows, on 3rd inst., the sum of 16s. 2d.— Supervisee NATHANIEL MORGAN, alias THOMAS HOWARTH, and JONES, Office No. 38550, age 25, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar right elbow and left buttock, mole right armpit, left and centre of belly; dress, black coat and vest, striped trousers, collar and tie, black felt hat, laco boots. He is tramping the country, staying for short periods at common lodging houses, and is accompanied by his wife, age about 26, ccmplexion fair, hair light ( curly, cut short) ; dress, black skirt, grey bodice, black felt hat, trimmed with red feathers. This supervisee's apprehension is also sought by Stourbridge ( Worcestershire) police. See Case No. 74, 3rd inst. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 1 25.— Preston ( Borough).— Forstealingjewellery and clothing from furnished apartments, 6th inst.— License- Holders FREDERICK RICHARDSON, alias GEORGE BE AVIS, and GEORGE COOM- BER, Office No. 40998, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel, scar back of head and on forehead, moles back of neck, right leg deformed, walks lame. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 28th February, 1887, to 5 years' penal servitude for housebreaking. Licensed 25th February last.— JOHN DOWNEY, Office No. 40495, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown ( curly), eyes blue, soar on left thigh. Sentenced at Liverpool, 6th November, 1886, to 5 years' penal servitude for fraud. Licensed 17th November last. Information to the Chief Constable of Preston. HEREFORDSHIRE. 20.— Ledbury ( County).— For stealing £ 7, the money of her parents— ALICE PHILLIPS, age 17, height 5ft. 2 in., complexion pale, hair dark, eyes grey, scars on chin from bite of a dog, two moles on right cheek; dress, black curly jacket with large buttons, grey dress with white stripes, black hat trimmed with red and bunch of forget- me- nots on top. May be found in the company of prostitutes. A native of Colwall. LINCOLNSHIRE. 26. — Grantham ( County). — For stealing, at Honnington, 24th ult. — 1 silver scent bottle, round sides, ribbed, blank places left for initials; 1 plain silver box, about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide, con- taining a pair of silver scissors, a knife and a silver bodkin; 1 small silver box, shape of a heart, with crown on lid; 1 silver- gilt box, washed over with gold, about 5 inches long and 2 inches wide, chased on top— GEORGE BURGESS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache black, supposed to have a hare lip which his moustache covers ; dressed in black coat which comes below knees, and brown hard felt hat. A wood- carver ; native of Penzance. His modus operandi is to call upon the clergy and FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 1891. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 gentry with a begging letter, which states he is deaf and dumb, and, in order to answer any questions which may be put to him, he carries a few papers and pencils in his hand to write down questions and answers. He is neither deaf nor dumb. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Grantham. MERIONETHSHIRE. 27. — Barmouth ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences.— H. HOLWAY, alias J. HALLWORTH, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion sallow, hair, moustache, and whiskers dark, eyes brown, prominent nose ; dress, grey tweed suit ( rather shabby), double peak cap. He generally carries a square brown basket which contains lace patterns, and two song- books with name " Thomas Holloway" printed inside. Warrant issued. Information to Sergeant Roberts, Barmouth. dark brown, slight moustache, eyes hazel, full round face, downcast look ; dress, faded tweed jacket suit, check peak cap, may be wearing a yellow- coloured overcoat ( much faded). A native of Hawick. Has relations at Denholm, Ancrum, and a brother at Pentland, near Edinburgh. Has been in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Hawick. ( turning grey), and eyes dark, shamrock tattooed on one arm, bugle on the other; dressed in union clothing, drab corduroy suit ( new), marked " Guild- ford Union," new boots, marked " G. U." Stated he was a bricklayer ; may be working at his trade. Absconded from Guildford Union, 29th nit. Information to Head Constable Berry, Guildford. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 28.— Monmouth ( County).— For stealing two watches ( one waltham lever, No. 2536313 on case, " Waltham, Mas.," on works; the other ho sold in Hereford)— 1THOMAS CLEGG, a watch repairer, age 30, height 5 ft. G in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, slight dark moustache, thin face, 2 small scars on forehead near left eyebrow; dress, blue serge coat with an old dark coat underneath, grey trousers, soft hat bent in the middle. A native of Bolton, Lancashire. Left Usk on 28th ult. Information to Capt. Benthon, Deputy Chief Constable, Monmouth. SHROPSHIRE. 35.— Newport ( County).— For obtaining, 28tli ult., £ 35, by a fictitious cheque — JAMES ED- WARDS, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair auburn, small side- whiskers and moustache light, weak eyes, slightly knock- kneed ; dress, dark slate- coloured overcoat, stripe trousers, high silk hat, lace boots; has also other suits with him. Is accompanied by his wife IRE- LAWN EY, age about 30 ; dress, large plaid yellow and brown ulster, with fur on collar, lady- like ; and his son DUDLEY, age 3 ; dressed in blue serge suit, sailor cap. The man and woman are well- edncated, and are able to give information respecting Australia and New Zealand, where they may endeavour to go. They take lodgings, agreeing to pay quarterly, obtain goods from tradesmen on credit, and decamp without paying, or give a worthless cheque on Birkbeck Bank, London. They may be staying at the Langham Hotel, 61, Chandos- street, W. C.; 85, Southampton- row, W. C.; or 85, North street, Clapham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Galliers, Newport. SUSSEX ( EAST). 40.— H asti ngs ( Borough).— For embezzlement— ALFRED CHEAL, alias MUGGERIDGE, a van driver, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and moustache black, eyes dark, tattooed about hands and arms, sailor and flag in red and blue ink on right arm ; dress, old black coat and vest, railway cord trousers, blue cap with peak. A native of Hastings. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings. PILKINGTON, alias CAPTAIN PETRE, age 55 to 60, height about 5 ft. 6 in., broad build, complexion pale, moustache and side- whiskers grey, eyes blue, very peculiar, unsettled, nervous expression, fat hands, very hairy on the backs; dress, dark suit, high hat, also has in his possession a black bowler hat, a cap with peak and white flaps, a light suit, and long dark overcoat— by all of which he varies his appearance. Had in his posses- sion a prescription, alleged to have been written by Sir Wm. Gull, about which he talks a great deal. Is accompanied by a WOMAN ( whom he calls his wife), age 45 to 50, somewhat taller than the man, thin build, pale face, small features, hair light brown, eyes blue ( cast in right) ; dress, navy- blue dress with red trimmings, long dark jacket, brown hat with fur brush, may be wearing a black velvet mantle. They take furnished lodgings, obtain goods on credit, under various pretences, from tradesmen, chiefly drapers, tailors, and wine merchants, and decamp. They left here, 16th ult., by the 10 a. m. train for Birmingham, but may have gone on to some other station further down the line. Had with them a large square basket with American- cloth cover, a large black portmanteau, a hamper, and a black enamelled square tin- case with two straps. Warrant issued. He is a tramping watchmaker and clock- cleaner, stays at common lodging- houses, and carries a small black leather bag, containing his tools. Supposed to have left Ipswich about a month since, and is likely to be found in London. This man stayed in a lodging- house in Ipswich, and went out into the villages round getting watches and clocks to clean, some of which he has returned, and some not. He gave himself out as a farmer, of Southwood Farm, Basingstoke, obtained a loan of £ 100 upon the security of his stock and crops, which he alleged were absolutely his property, but, when the first instalment fell due, it was discovered that he only managed the farm at a weekly salary, and had left the place and gone away. His wife and family now occupy the farm. He is well known to the barmaids at the refreshment buffet, Basingstoke Railway Station, also at a biscuit factory at Portsmouth.
