Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLIOB GAZBTTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted to one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward ii offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. I. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of los. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person berequiredto be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICB GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicA may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must te clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond If Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or u> Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLIOS GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125 Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly • expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions 011 which it is payable. ,( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ' ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C Division.— For obtaining £ 8 10s. 6d. by worthless cheque on the London and County Banking Company, Limited, Covent Garden Branch, series C. 85315— Two men: 1st, PERCY MILLS, alias PERCY FLEMING NORTON, age 27, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, clean shaved, fat cold face, quick speaker; dress, light- brown covert coat, dark trousers* silk hat; smart appearance. Says he has been an actor, and is fond of the company of professionals. R. ROBERTSON, alias ARTHUR ALENE, age 27, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes dark, clean shaved, thick lips, teeth very dark and decayed; dress, dark- blue beaver overcoat with velvet collar, black frock coat with silk facings, dark mixture trousers, silk hat; smart appearance. Associates with actors and music- hall professionals. Both natives of London. Warrant issued. 2.— L Division.— For stealing £ 2— WILLIAM MILLER, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion, hair, and eyes dark, scar from bridge to point of nose, round face; dress, brown mixture jacket suit, black hard felt hat, green tie, lace boots. Supposed native of Liverpool. 3.— R Division.— Woodcut portrait and description of JAMES LAWRENCE, late post- master at Eltham, whose apprehension is sought for embezzlement since October, 1887, age 73, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and whiskers grey, stout build, dress, dark coat aud trousers, black felt hat. 4. — R Division. — For larceny ( lodger) — DANIEL STACEY, gunner Royal Artillery, age 25, height 5 ft. 7i in, complexion sallow, hair and moustache black, eyes hazel, mark right side of neck ; dress, brown tweed suit. A native of Alton, Hants. Is well known at Aldershot and Gravesend. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— For embezzlement — HENRY WELLMAN, late of 51, Glengall- road, Kilburn, age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., whiskers and moustache ginger, eyes ( full) blue, prominent nose, walks sharply; dress, dark clothes, and high silk hat. Is well known in the hardware trade. A native of Windsor. Warrant issued. Information fo Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( Burgh).— For assault with intent to ravish, 8th ulto.— HUGH McCAMELLY, age 60, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair ( bald on top) and whiskers all round face, grey, shaved on chin and top lip, sharp nose, which is supposed to be pockmarked, stiff rocking gait,; dress, grey tweed jacket, moleskin trousers, small check tweed peak cap, boots or shoes with sparrables and heel plates. Was employed as a carter on a railway in course of construction between Annbank and Troon, and has worked as such with various contractors in Glasgow, Greenock, Paisley, & c. Supposed to have two brothers working at Coltness Furnaces. May seek employment at public works. Absconded 10th ulto. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McKay, Ayr. BERKSHIRE. 7 — Clewer ( County).— For stealing a pair of boots ( recovered) and one gentleman's shooting boot and one lady's button boot— JAMES COL- LINGWOOD, a rag and bone collector, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair, and dirty moustache dark, blind ono eye, supposed left; dress, long dirty blue monkey jacket, dirty cord trousers, dark hard felt hat, or may be wearing a cap. Is known as " Boss," and is sometimes in company of a man called " Gipsy Jack." Information to Supt. Blake, Clewer. 8. — Windsor ( Borough). — For obtaining a silver watch and chain by false pretences— ERNEST DURFIELD, alias JOHN BOND, a bootmaker, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair ( curly), beard, and moustache brown, eyea grey, scar on chin; dress, dark- brown tweed suit 2 FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 1891. dark tweed ovcrcont with cape, brown hard felt. hat polo collar, dark- blue tie, lace boots. May be found at Hampstead or Clacton- on- Sea. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Armour, Windsor. A shoemaker. Native of Llanbedr, Crickhowell. Has friends in pottery district of Staffordshire, near Longton- on- Stoke. Was seen at Longton on 23rd February. May endeavour to go to America. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 10— Buckingham ( County).— For bigamy — WALTER CLARK PERKINS, age 28, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyos grey, scar on forehead, cut mark on left little finger; dress, dark overcoat, brown- striped suit, light leg- gings, black tie and horseshoe pin, plain or br » wn cap. A groom ; native of Luton, Bedfordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Shepherd, Buckingham. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 11.— Bottisham ( County). — For attempted rape, 5th ulto., at Cherryhinton — EDWARD HATLEY, age 33, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, bloated face, hair dark, moustache brow*, eyes hazel, slightly knock- kneed ; dress, brown cloth jacket, worsted guernsey, check cord trousers ( tiglai fitting), black round felt hat, with broad brim and elastic guard and bar. A labourer, native of Cherry- hinton. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Redhouse, Bottish**. known to the Salvation Army, at 27, Whitechapel- road, at 6, St. Margaret's- c6urt, High- street, Borough, at 38, Gnunby- street, St. John's, Hoxton, and at 36, Upper Thames- street, London. Left Plymouth by Great Western Railway train at 2.10 p. m., 25th ult, Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Evans, Devonport. DORSETSHIRE. 14.— Beaminster ( County).— For indecent assault on a girl, age 12— WILLIAM ROLLS, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light brown, weak eyes, bad on feet, and turns his toes out, dressed respectably. May seek employment as a baker, and lodge at coffee taverns or private lodgings. Native of Bridport, from which place he took a ticket for Bristol, 24th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Freeman, Beaminster. HAMPSHIRE. - Gosport ( County).— For DURHAM. 15.— Durham ( Citij).— For embezzling £ 34 ( total defalcations being upwards of £ 500), FREDERICK DAVID BUCKHAM, a clothier's assistant, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 in., hair inclined to ginger and bald on top, fair, moustache and slight side whiskers ginger, eyes brown, smart appearance, usually wears dark tweed jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, brown felt hat. This man served his apprenticeship with Mr. Ward, Clothier, Newcastle- on- Tyne, and has been manager for Hepworth & Co , at their branch shop, Durham, for the last ( 5 years. Well known to most managers for that firm in the North of England. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Smith, Durham. ESSEX. 16— Colchester ( Borough),— For> tealing £ 33 — ALFRED RABEY, a deserter from the 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers, age 19, height 5 feet 4 in., com- plexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, bald patch left side of head, portion of which can be seen when the hat is worn, scar both sides of head, brown patch left buttock ; dress, dark mixture suit, red spots. Native of Outwell. Wisbech, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable, Coombs, Col- chester. 20.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing, 26th ult. ( bailee)— a dun- colour entire pony, aged, about 13 hands, short tail, black head, value about £ 4; also cart and harness ( the latter recovered)— GEORGE WOODS, age 23, height 5 ft. 3iin., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes hazel, cut mark upper lip, mouth usually dirty from chewing tobacco ; dress, blue serge coat, dark cloth trousers, black hard felt hat, dirty appearance. Native of Gosport. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Catchlove, Gosport, KENT. 21. — Rochester { City). — For attempted burglary and violently assaulting police, on the morning of 26th ult.— FOUR MEN : 1st, age 30 to- 35, height 5 ft. 7 in , moustache dark, few side whiskers ; dress, black overcoat, dark trousers, and black hard felt hat; 2nd, height about 6 ft., com- plexion fair, side whiskers, no moustache; dress, light overcoat, light trousers, and brown felt hat, with dent in centre; ord, aga 25 or 26, height about 5 ft. 5 in., moustache ( slight) light; dress, light dust coat, light trousers, and light cap ; 4th, cannot be described. They left behind a black leather Gladstone bag, containing 2 jemmies, 2 chisels, 2 centre- bits, 4 gimlets, lamp, 2 wooden wedges, large ball of string, screws, small saw, shoe mufflers, small brown and black plaid travelling rug, and a blue cotton handkerchief, with small white spots. Information to Chief Constable Broadbridge, Rochester. FLINTSHIRE.. 17.— Mold Inverness coat CHESHIRE. 12. — Stockport ( Borough). — For embezzle- ment— JOHN TAYLOR, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair black, slight moustache, of Jewish appearance; dress, black ribbed worsted coat and vest, grey striped trousers, black hard felt hat. A scenic painter and decorator. Is known in Lancashire towns as " Concertina Jack." Is also known to Mr. Jacques, Painter, 27, Barratt- etreet, Lloyd- street, Manchester; to Mrs. Beaton, 43, Hereford street, Lisson- grove, London, and to Messrs. Giles & Co., Painters and Decorators, High- street, Kensington. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Stockport. ( County).— For stealing a blue cloth and cape— JOSEPH EVANS, alias " DODGER," age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in. complexion fresh, hair grey, cut mark down centre of forehead, left arm broken ; dress, dark plaid suit, light brown felt hat; may be wearing the stolen coat. Stated he had recently been training horses for Lord Combermere. Supposed native of near Ruthin, Denbighshire. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Bolton, Mold. DEVONSHIRE. 13.— Devonport ( Borough). — For forgery, 25th ult., and thereby obtaining the sum of £ 10— JOHN HENRY GOODING, a clerk, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache light, has an impediment in speech, as if speaking through his nose ; dress, blue witney overcoat with velvet collar, brown check tweed coat and vest, black diagonal trousers, side- spring boots worn down at heels, black hard felt hat; carried an umbrella, and a bundle containing clothing. Is well GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18.— Cheltenham ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— R. HILTON, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, moustache brown, tinged with grey, eyes sup- posed grey ; dress, light dust or covert coat, dark suit, and brown bowler hat. Is accompanied by his three sons, age 10, 8 and 6 years respectively, dressed in sailor suits and caps. Stays at hotels and coffee taverns. He represented himself as an advertising ngent, and gave receipts printed by Messrs. Davis and Son, Gloucester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. 19. — Fishponds ( County). — For larceny ( lodger), stealing a watch ( recovered) and clothing, which he is now supposed to be wearing— EDWARD HAINES, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar front and two top of head, 2 blue marks right side of forehead, scar right buttock and inside left upper arm, " A. C." tattooed left forearm; dress, dark cloth overcoat, dark cloth trousers and vest, white woollen scarf, army boots, and black hard felt hat. A native of Bitton, Gloucestershire. May probably enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Matthews, Fishponds. LANARKSHIRE. 22.— Hamilton ( Burgh).— For murder, com- mitted on 21st nit., at Shielinghill — PETER CORRIGAN, alias KERRIGAN and CUNNING- HAM, age about 55, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion dark, hair beginning to turn grey, clean shaved, but if moustache or whiskers are allowed to- grow they are likely to be grey, longish features, rather broad at cheeks, and narrower at chin, lip* rather thin, or fall in slightly as if some teeth are deficient, stoops slightly, is of a somewhat sullen and unsociable disposition; dress, dark coat, vest, anct trousers, or may be wearing greyish trousers, black or dark blue cloth cap with glazed peak, worn down on forehead, front of cap raised cp and turned to one side. A labourer; native of Ireland Has been a good many years about Glasgow, and has worked as a mason's labourer, and as a brasher or roadsman in pits. Has also been employed on " Anchor Line" ships between Glasgow and America, and has gone about as a pedlar hawking laces and matches. May endeavour to leave the country. Absconded 23rd ult. It is requested that enquiry be made at shipping offices, steamboat quays, new buildings in course of erection, and at farms, quarries, coalpits, brick works, common lodging- houses, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Millar, Hamilton. LANCASHIRE. 23.— Bury ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— a WOMAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion pale, hair ( parted at side- and slightly wavy in front) dark auburn ; dress, black dress skirt, brown stripe bodice, white apron, dark- brown shawl, button boots; respectable appear- ance. She calls at cotton factories, and asks for one- of the workmen, and tells him a friend of his ha » come from abroad and wishes to see him before he goes back, and asks for his address in writing. She then takes this to the man's wife, telling her that, her husband has sent her for £ 1. Supposed native- of Accrington. Information to Supt. Henderson, Bury. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 24. — Southwell ( County). — For obtaining goods by false pretences— E. CHILTON alias BLAKE, VINCENT, and NADEN, age 50, height ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) light brown, full beard, whiskers and moustache^ eyes blue ; dress, long light overcoat, reddish brown breeches and brown gaiters, hard round hat. Wore leather strap across shoulders under overcoat Had a yellow and white collie dog with him. FRIDAY, MARCH G, 1891. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 Supposed native of Lichfield : A woman named M. CHILTON, alias VINCENT and BRASSING- TON, age 35, height 4 ft. 5 in., slight build, com- plexion very pale, hair supposed brown, well educa- ted, and writes a good hand ; dress, long dark cloak, supposed dark greenish dress, black felt hat, shabby boots. Supposed native of Weston- super- Mare, and that her real name is MARIA STEADMAN. They take lodgings, and, assuming the name of some respectable person, write for goods on approval, and pawn or sell them when sent. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Marshall, Southwell. SUFFOLK. 25. — Lowestoft ( County). — For stealing a lady's gold geneva watch, maker, Briggs, Spaldfng, a vulcanite chain with small black pencil ( gold end) attached— WILLIAM WHITTON ( supposed false), age about 28 or 30, height about 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion swarthy, hair and short stubby whiskers brown, cross- eyed; dress, light check suit, hard black hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gobbett, Lowestoft. SUSSEX ( EAST). 26— Eastbourne ( County)— For stealing a cash- box ( recovered) ; 2 cheques— 1 for £ 10, on " Wheeler & Co., High Wycombe," drawn by " Geo. Gardner to self, 19.2.91 " ( crossed), the other for £ 5, on the " London and County Bank, Romford"; about £ 7 10s. in money; 1 gentleman's gold English lover watch, maker " Manders, Windsor"; 1 lady's gold keyless half- hunter, |- plate lever, No. 394763, com- pensated balance, maker " Bruford, Eastbourne"; 2 gold albert chains and appendages, consisting of a £ 2 jubilee coin, a mounted guinea, a mounted 7s. piece ( gold), a gold seal with white stone, a small gold locket, and a silver sovereign- purse, shell pattern ; 1 silver cigarette- case, lion one side, mono- gram R. P. on the other; 1 gold brooch, filigree pattern, photo of child on back ; 1 pair gold ear- rings to match ; 1 plain gold brooch ; 1 pair fancy gold earrings; 1 drab cloth box overcoat, with • double- stitched seams and velvet collar; also some masonic papers. HUGH TRAVERS THOMAS, alias DOCTOR THOMAS, THORNTON, and BROWN, age about 42, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair ( thin on top of head) and whiskers ( thin) light brown, eyes ( sunken) steel- grey, cut mark down forehead, across nose, and left cheek, small head ; dress, dark overcoat, dark blue- striped frock coat, with silk facings, and vest to match, white and black check trousers, black tie, and pin, brown oblong stone. Supposed native of Australia. ( See Case No. 4, 18th October, 1889.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Newnham, Eastbourne. 27.— Patcham ( County).— For obtaining £ 7 by means of a fictitious cheque— WILLIAM GEORGE MITCHELL, age about 44, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., • complexion fair, hair light, few whiskers; dress, dark frock coat, high hat, patent leather boots. Late of 6, Imperial Arcade, Ludgate Circus, E. C. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tucker, Patcham. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. light brown morning coat, striped vest and trousers, with brown plaid pair underneath, red and black muffler, black hard felt hat. States he is a betting man, and native of Clapham Common, London. Supposed previously convicted. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. DENBIGHSHIRE. 30.— Wrexham ( County).— Committed for trial on two charges of highway robbery with violence, on two females, 20th ult.— a man, who gives the name of JOHN JONES, alias JOHN ROLFE ( supposed false), age about 22, height 6 ft. in., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair rough, brown, eyes hazel; dress, old dirty grey jacket and vest, corduroy trousers, very broad brim soft felt hat, plaid muffler, check shirt, strong lace boots. The appearance of a navvy. Supposed previously convicted. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wild, Wrexham. Description of two men suspected— 1st, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., full red face, very long sandy moustache, no beard or whiskers, bald patch about the size of palm of a man's hand on top of head ; dress, short dark blue melton overcoat, black clothes, lace boots, with broad soles, and black hard felt hat; when at Norton, had on false whiskers and beard ( trimmed), about inches long.— 2nd, age 22 to 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion pale and sallow, moustache ( slight) dark; dress, dark overcoat, low shoes, with thin soles and narrow toes, hard felt hat. Both are of gentlemanly appearance, and are no doubt expert professional thieves. After the robbery they went by train from Norton to Frodsham, Cheshire, and thence to Liverpool.
