WALKER AMD SONS, vAUINET MANUFACTURERS and EXPORTERS DECORATORS AND GENERAL HOUSE FURNISHERS. Finest Stock in London to Select from. The resignation is announced of Mr. John Norris, Chief Constable of Coventry, a veteran and able officer, whose name is a household word amongst policemen everywhere. Mr. Norris has been in bad health since June of last year, the consequence of which, and his advanced age, has induced him to sever a connection that has existed for half a century. Mr. Norris joined the Service in 1842 at Bath, and was appointed Chief Constable of Coventry in 1862. While at Coventry his reputation has been enhanced by his constant efforts to further the good of the Ser- vice in every possible way. He has worked assidu- ously, though unfortunately without avail up to the present time, to secure such an amendment of the Police Superannuation Act as should destroy its optional character, and make it a legislath e enactment that, on retirement at the end of the proper term of service an officer shall receive a pension at the rate of two- thirds of his pay. His efforts to establish a Police Orphanage will be well within the memory of those associated with him in that important movement, and his services in the way of securing " rational drees " for the Police, and of promoting amongst them mutual assurance on the highest and broadest principles, are well known. The offices he has held have included those of Trea- surer of the Police Superannuation Committee, Vice- President of the Police Mutual Assurance Association, Chairman of the Borough Police Association, etc. Mr. Norris's work on behalf of the Service has been energetic and never ending; his watchfulness in its interest has been keen and vigilant; there has scarcely ever been an important departure taken in police work in which his advice has not been first sought. His perfect knowledge and ripe experience made his counsel of the utmost value, and he was never chary about giving it when the welfare of the Service was afficted. Would it not be graceful if the Police were now to pay him some compliment, in the shape of a testi- monial to be subscribed by the members of the different forces in the United Kingdom 1 Subscriptions to be forwarded to Charles Stretten, Esq, C C. of Cambridgeshire, Cambridge, who will acknowledge the same in the " Police Chronicle." This story is by Mr. F. C. Philips ( Author if " As in a Look- ing- Glass," the - well- known drama in which Mrs. Bernard Beere made such a remarkable success) and Mr. Percy i'endall. A runaway marriage, followed by impecuniosity, forms the basis of the story, the principal scenes of which are laid on the Continent. The truth of the adage. " Marry in haste and repent at leisure," receives much exemplification in the course of the narrative, the young couple being diiven into all manner of equivocal courses by their lack of means. On these lines, a tale is cleverly built up which, faithfully holding up the mirror to Nature, abounds in human interest. The IeadiDg characters are strongly drawn, and the plot work* out cleverly through comedy and tragedy to the appointed end, which is full of unaffected pathos as a picture of contemporary life in certain sets and under the given circumstances; the story is bound to please the novel- readmg public.
