WILLIAM COLQUHOUN ( theft), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 13th September, 1889. ( 259 H. c.) Edinburgh. On the evening of Sunday, 20th October, 1889, on the arrival of a special train containing a numerous company of theatrical artistes, a theft took place at the Caledonian Railway Station, in Edinburgh, of a valuable set of jewels belonging to the leader of the company. The theft was managed very adroitly, and in such a manner as to lead to the belief that it was the work of one or more clever travelling thieve". The port8r who took the luggage called a cab, and put the dressing- bag which enclosed the jewel case con- taining the stolen articles into it, but as another cab had been engaged unknown to the potter, he was told to remove the luggage from the cab in which he had put it, and it was then found that the dressing case with its valuable contents had been abstracted from the cab— it is supposed from the side furthest from the station. The dressing- case has since been dis- covered in a private lodging- house where quarters had been takpn by a man whose description ( No. 1) is appended hereto. Since the theft it has been discovered that other two men ( Nos. 2 and 3) were in the city at the time of the theft, and had been in communication with No. 1, and thop all tctpk their departure under peculiar circum- stances the tane night. Everything points to the theft havinabeen planned and carried out by the three men after d^ cribe d, and the co- operation of the police is earnestly requested to secure their arrest, as it is believed that even if nothing is heard of the jewels, evidence will be obtainable to secure their conviction. A reward of £ 100 is offered by the owner for the recover/ of tie stolen jewellery and arrest of the thieves, or in proportion to the amount recovered. And of tbis reward £ 20 is offered alcme for the apprehension cf the thieves. Any information, or photographs of thieves likely to bo concerned in such a the% will be esteemed.
