Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland- yard, London, S. W. MISCELLANEOUS. As the removal of the ladder, by which they gain access to the upper windows, would ensure the capture of the thieves, they generally stretch wire across the lawn to trip up pursuers, and in the last case the hall door and side dcors of the house were securely fastened from the outside by wire to prevent pursuit. Should any persons be seen loitering about or direct- ing attention to any house or grounds, their descrip- tion should be noted, and the Police of the locality communicated with. CAUTION. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT, 74.— On the evening of the 27th ult., a mansion in the neighbourhood of London was broken into by thieves, who entered through a bed- room window by means of a ladder. Several offences of this kind have recently occurred at mansions in the country and near London, but owing to the want of a sufficient description of the thieves, the Police will have great difficulty in tracing them. It is to be feared, therefore, that other houses will be attacked by the same gang. The offences are generally committed between the hours of 7 and 10 in the evening, during the family dinner hour, and when the upper part of the house is without occupants. Proprietors of detached houses standing in their own grounds are specially warned to see that all windows are closed and securely fastened in the evening, and urgent attention is called to the imprudence of keep- ing valuable jewellery in wardrobes in bed and dress- ing- rooms. It is valuable portable property of this kind which such burglars alone seek for, and keeping it in a proper thief- proof safe affords absolute security against their depredations. MADE WITH BOILING MILK. if COME UNTO ME— I WILL GIVE YOU REST," The Gospel of Rest is peculiar to our Lord Jesus Christ. Perbap3 many of us are longing that it might be ours in this New Year— ours more fully, if we already know something of it. How may we practically realise and enjoy it ? 1. We must accept the finished work of Christ. He has ceased from the work of our redemption, because there was no more to do; our sins were put away ; the gate of Heaven was opened to all that believe; all was " finished," and was " very good." Why should we try to add one stitch to a finished garment, or one stroke torthe signed and sealed pardon placed within our hands 1 We cannot make our- selves'acceptable to God ; we can stand in His presence, by virtue of the glorious and completed sacrifice of Calvary. 2. We must will the will of God. So long as the will of God, whether in the Bible or in Providence, is going in one direction and our wills in another, rest is impossible. None can stay His Hand, or say, What doest Thou 1 His will is done with us or in spite of us. He who says a perpetual " yes " to the will of God— an " Even so, Father," that man will find rest to his soul. And though we may not be'able always to feel glad, yet if we are willing to be made willing to will as He does, we shall be enabled to say, " I delight to do Thy Will, O my God." 3.- » We must trust our Father's care. Sometimes as a wild deluge, sometimes like the continual dropping of water, does care mar our rest. Household cares, family cares, business cares, buzz round the soul like a swarm of gnats, what rest can there be for one so beset ? Let us acquire the habit of talking to Him about all, handing over all to Him at the moment the tiniest shadow falls upon the'soul. He loves. He will not forget or forsake. He cares for us. 4. We must follow our Shepherd's lead. The way is dark— we can hardly discern a step in front. But our Divine Guide know3. Why should we fear? He who touches us, touches the apple of His Eye. We may, therefore, trust, and not be afraid, and we shall hear Him saying to us— " In Me ye shall have peace." ROYAL IRISH WAREHOUSE ALL POLICE OFFICERS SHOULD REFTTR TO MESSRS. JAMES HIGKLAND & CO.'
