Some travellers were journeying across one of the vast American prairies. It was the time of rest, and the horses, unharnessed, were quietly grazing, while the company were employed in different ways. All at once the guide started to his feet, and gazing eagerly over the prairie, shouted, " The prairie is on fire ! Har- ness the horses— quick, for life ! Rapidly was the order carried out, and the waggons were driven with the utmost speed. Past them flew, like the wind, the wild animals of the wood. In spite of every effort, the fire gained upon the tra- vellers- they looked back in terror, and beheld the fierce flames licking up every- thing. Trees fell with a startling crash, and the air was fast becoming like the heat of a furnace. The guide cried " Halt! " and setting fire to the grass in several places immediately in front of them, watched it crackling, blazing, spreading until it left behind a blackened, clear spot. " Stand where the fire has been !" and the party obeyed. Scarcely were they in this place of safety, when the prairie fire was upon them ; but finding no grass to lay hold of, it parted, burned round them, and passed on. Are we threatened with the fiery condemnation of God's Holy Law ? Do we look about for a hiding- place, and have we failed in our search 1 The fires are pursuing us, and gain fearfully on our pace, even while we flee with all our might. There is but one spot where safety is found. That spot is Calvary. Have we fled by faith to Christ crucified 1 Are we seeking God's mercy 1 " Stand where the fire has been." The fire of God's wrath against the sins of His people burned once on Calvary, when it consumed their Surety. Fear not, therefore; if we are shel- tered there the fire will never touch that spot again. If there, we are safe." " He was wounded for our transgressions." " With His stripes we are healed."
