FOR EVER AND EVER, AMEN. a Why should he trouble himself? He was fair dealing and sober- no one had much to say against him— he had done pretty well so far, and hoped to get on pretty well at last. So argued a man who steadily put all thought of death away trom him. Well, one day lie put his head inside a church door. He wasn't in the way of church going, and he didn't mean to stay. Nor did he. He took a good look round, ana went out. Only— he just caught five words, " For ever and ever, Amen." How strange it was ! Those words would not get out of his ears— on and on they went. " For ever and ever, Amen." " For ever and ever, Amen." What did they mean ? For ever and ever. A life beyond the grave. Wasn't that par- son's talk ? He would go home to dinner and his newspaper, and think of some- thing else. " For ever and ever, Amen." The dinner and the newspaper would not put them away. The clock ticked them; the bells chimed them ; the tramp of people outside repeated them ; his heart seemed to beat in measure to them. " For ever and ever." What did it mean ? That heart would stop beating some day. It must. And then, what then? Could it be that a life for ever and ever would be begun 1 And if so, where 1 The Holy Spirit of God fastened these words on his heart— the one question haunted him, " Where will that for ever and ever be spent by me 1" He felt there was something wrong— something between him and One who is Lord of the Kingdom of Heaven, to which, however little they may think of it here, people would fain be sure of going when death draws near ; and that something was sin. You and I cannot, by any arguing, argue away death, with an eternity on the other side ; for death will come, whether we please or not. We cannot get ri J of our Ein burden by ourselves. My friend looked into a book which answered his question. He learnt that when God gave His Own dear Son, sent Him clown to be our punishment bearer, it was that He might be able to give a free pardon for His Bake to everyone who should trust His Word fully.
