THE Police Gazette, OR HUE- AND- CRY. Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. RBGTJIiATXONB. All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Ory are to be transmitted under cover, addressed to the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, authenticated by a Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not nectbsary to forward tho Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. All Descriptions of persons whose apprehension is sought on a charge of Misdemeanour should be accompanied by a statement that a Warrant has been issued, and by the name of the person in whose hands it is. But the Constabulary should remember that they cannot arrest a person charged with an offence of this nature unless they have the Warrant in their possession when making the arrest. %• Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this Information the mistake cannot be rectified. Prison and Police Authorities are particularly requested to be good enough to inform the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Hue- and- Cry " no longer necessary. Description of JAMES MAWN, native of Roo, who stands charged with having, on the 4th day of June, 1888, in the barony of Tullyhaw, parish of Killinagh, stolen a cow the property of Jane Tubman, Thornhill, which has been recovered:— Gray tender eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, shaved face, except small moustache, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 22 or 23 years of age, fair hair; wore a gray frock coat, dark trowsers, torn at knee, and dark vest; ft a labourer. ^ Swanlinbar, 7th June, 1888. Description of SINON CASEY ( mother's surname Meaney), and MICHAEL GALVIN ( mother's surname Casey), natives of Kilrush, who stand charged with having, on the 25th April, 1888, in the barony of Moyarta, parish of Kilrush, unlawfully assaulted one Thomas O'Brien, and robbed him of the sum of £ 18 15s.:— 1. Gray eyes, long nose, sallow complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, about 35 years of age: wore a soft hat, gray, coat, tweed trowsers and vest, is a car driver. 2. Slightly lame, rowdy looking, gray eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 30 years of age; wore a hard hat, black coat, brown trowsers and vest, is a carpenter. Description of PATRICK DONOHUE, MARY ANNE DONOHUE, and MARY DONOHUE, natives of Limerick city, who stand charged with having, on the 4th day of May, 1888, in the barony of Condon and Clongibbons, parish of Fermoy, severely assaulted, beaten, and inflicted grievous wounds on Mary Ryan:— 1. Gray eyes, long nose, fair complexion, long face, active make, 5 feet 8 inches high about, 45 years of age ; wore a black hat, brown coat, trowsers, and vest; is a " gambler." 2. Brown eyes, long nose, sallow complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 45 years of age ; wore a brown shawl over her head; is a " gambler." 3. Pearl on left eye; blue eyes, broad nose, fair complexion, broad face, stout make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 20 years ofage; wore a brown shawl over her head ; is a " gambler." Description of THREE MEN, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 20th May, 1888, in the barony of Duhallow, parish of Clonfert, assaulted and forcibly taken a six chamber revolver from John Quirke, caretaker to W. N. Leader, Esq., J. P.:— 1. Fresh complexion, long thin face, slight make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 28 years of age, fair hair, no beard; wore a white tweed two- peaked cap, whitish gray tweed coat. 2. Long nose, dark complexion, round full face, very stout make, 5 feet 9 J inches high, about 29 years of age, black hair, no whiskers or beard; wore a black soft hat, black pilot coat. 3. Long nose, fair complexion, very plump face, stout make, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 34 or 35 years of age, black hair, black side whiskers ; wore a hard black hat, black frieze coat, black trowsers. JOHN VERNON, alias JOHN M'ILVERNON, robbery from a dwelling house, not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 16th December, 1887. ( 85586 c— 46598.) Dublin. Description of a MAN, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the night of 18th May, 1888, in the barony of Rathdown, parish of Kill, being suspected of entering the house of Mrs. Elsner, and stolen spoons, & c., of the value of about £ 3 :— Round shoulders, large mouth, small thin moustache, large nose, coarse broad face, short set make, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, about 40 years of age; wore an old gray coat, begging when observed. Description of MARYANNE, alias BRIDGET KELLY ( mother's name, Brennan, residing at 51, Lower Mecklenburgh- street, Dublin; she also has an aunt residing at Conolly- court, off Purdon- street), native of Dublin, who stands charged with having, on the 24th day of April, 1888, in the barony df Coolock, parish of Clonturk, stolen from her employer, Winifred Quinn, the sum of ten pounds ten shillings:— Round shoulders, awkward gait, gray eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, oval face, stout make, 4 feet lOincheshigh, about 20 years of age, dark hair; wore a black straw hat, brown dress, short black jacket; is a general servant. Description of MARY ANNE MANNION, native of Walshstown, who stands charged with having, on the 3rd day of June, 1888, in the barony of Longford, parish of Killoran, stolen £ 15, consisting of three £ S notes, the property of her employer, John Reilly:— Black eyes, thick nose, very yellow complexion, broad face, very stout make, 5 feet high, about 22 years of age, black hair; wore a dark cashmere dress, red petti coat, reddish colour shawl, no bonnet, is a farmer's servant. Description of A PERSON, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the night of 30th or morning of 31st May, 1888, in the barony of Kilcullen, parish of Kilcullin, stolen an ass, cart, and harness:— Red tender eyes, sharp nose, sandy complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, sandy hair, sandy beard cut short; wore a black short coat; is a tramp. Description of PETER FARRELL and CHRIS- TOPHER CONNOLLY, natives of Cloncumber, who stand charged with haying, on the 10th day of May, 1888, in the barony of Connell, parish of Kilmeague, seriously assaulted Robert Nevins:— 1. Narrow shoulders and awkward gait, gray eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 23 years of age, dark hair; wore a solt hat, dark tweed coat, teowsers, and vest; is a labourer. 2. Fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 30 years of age; wore a dark ooat, moleskin trowsers, and dark vest; is a boatman on Grand canal. Was convicted in Dublin about 9 months since, of stabbing, and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. Haj a brother residing in James's- street, Dublin. " Warrants in hands of Police. JOHN FITZPATRICK, forgery, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 25th May, 1888. ( 88066 c.— 51080. JOHN REILLY, serious assault, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 2nd March, 1888. ( 86655 c.— 48642.) Limerick. Description of WILLIAM KENNEDY ( mother's surname Bridget Keane), native of Doon, who stands charged with having, on the 11th day of May, 1888, in the barony of Coonagh, parish of Doon, seriously assaulted William Leahy, by striking him on the head with a stone, and fracturing hisxskull, and who has since died from the effocts of the injuries received:— Black eyes, hooked nose, sallow complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 22 years of age, black hair; wore a two- peaked tweed cap, black serge sack coat, gray tweed trowsers ( broken about the knees), gray tweed vest; is a carpenter. Description of SAMUEL BLAIR alias JOHN WILLIAMSON, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the morning of the 20th May, 1888, in the barony of North West Liberties, parish of Temple more, oommitted a burglary in the house of Messrs. Cosgrove and Connor, Bishop- street, Londonderry :— Tattooed with a bracelet, anchor, and shield on fore- arm, and square, compass, & c., on back of hands, gray eyes, flit nose, fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 2i inches high, about 23 years of ago, fair hair ; wore a black cap, dark coat, trowsers, and vest. Description of JOSEPH JORDAN, native ol Culnafey ( county Antrim), who stands chrrg: d with having, on tho 19th day of May, 1888, in the barony of Loughinshallen, parish of Ballyscullion, attempted to commit a rape on one Nancy Lynn:— Brown eyes, sharp nose, red thin face, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 19 years of age ; wore a single- peaked tweed cap, browa coat, dark corduroy trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. Description of MICHAEL NEAFSEY, native of Aughamore, Ballyhaunis, who stands charged with having, on the 30th May, 1888, in the barony of Costelloe, parish of Beken, burglariously entered ihe dwelling- house of Patrick M'Conville, Ballyhaunis, and stolen a sum of money, recovered;— Dark carbuncles on face, down looking, brown eyes, cocked nose, dark sallow complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 23 yeirs of age, dark hair ; is a harvest man. Description of PATRICK DARCY, native of Ratoath, who stands charged with having, on the 30th April, 1888, in the barony of Ratoath, parish of Dunshaughlin, stolen a suit of Workhouse clothes, the property of Dunshaughlin Board of Guardians :— Is of weak intellect and is continually talking about farming and ploughing, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 50 years of age, hair turning gray, wears all his beard, wore the Workhouse coat, trowsers and vest; was an inmate of Workh, ouse. Description of JAMES DOWD, charged with the larceny of £ 10 from his uncle, Michael Kenny:— blue or gray eyes, rather cocked nose, rather sallow but sunburned complexion, stout make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, 20 years of age, dark hair ( almost black), small and rather fair moustache, is sullen looking; wore a rusty brown tweed suit, and it is believed a felt hat; is a servant boy. Will probably endeavour to emigrate. Warrant in hands of District Inspector at Easkey. Easkey, 3rd June, 1888. DAVY, supposed native of Greyfort, and a MAN, name unknown, supposed native of Greyfort, who stands charged with having, on the morning of 23rd April, 1888, in the barony of Leyny, parish of Achonry, broken into the house of Owen Lavin, of Carrowrielly, and intimidated him by threats and violence :— 1. Hazel eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 25 or 26 years of age, fair hair; wore a hard black felt hat, and dark tweed clothes, is a farmer's son. 2. Small fair side whiskers and moustache, shaves upper part of chin, long nose, fair complexion, long thin face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 27 or 28 years of age, fair hair; wore a low soft black hat, and knitted cuffs, dark tweed sack coat, dark trowsers and vest. 3. High cheek bones, black moustache, no beard or whiskers, swarthy complexion, broad face, very stout make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 25 years of age, dark hair; wore a dark tweed coat, dark trowsers and vest Warrants in hands of the Police at Templehouse. ROBERT BLACK ( Junior), intent to procure abortion, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 27th January, 1 888. ( 86369 c.— 48131) DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. Description of KATE KIERNAN, wanted here on Warrant, for child desertion :— About 20 years of age, medium height and make, light brown hair, delicate appearance, birth mark on one of her arms, dressed in black skirt, long black jacket, black fur cape, and black hat; is a native of the county Meath; is a servant by occupation, and was in service with a lady in Oldtown, county Dublin, up to 18th ultimo. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for her arrest. WILLIAM REDDY, Superintendent. 8th June, 1888. ( 163 H. C.) Description of the undernamed young offender, who, on the evening of the 2nd June, 1888, at 5 o'clock, absconded from the Glenr. ree Reformatory School at county Wicklow:— JOHN MURPHY, 1995, about 17 or 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 5 feet 4 inches high, stout make, fair and freckled complexion, brown hair, gray eyes, ordinary nose, ordinary mouth, oval visage ; mole near his right ear. Formerly belonged to Knockaneasy, Broadway, county Wexford. Parents reside at Bun- carrick, Broadway, county Wexford. The school dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of:— Corduroy trowsers, vest, and jacket, cloth cap ( Scotch make), strong nailed boots. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expenses of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. ( 161 H, c.) Particulars relative to Convict SAMUEL BLAIR, A 790, who has broken the conditions of his licence, convicted at Belfast, county Antrim, on 7th December, 1883, for burglary 3 count*, and larceny 1 count, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude, in each case sentences concurrent:— 19 years of age on conviction, single, is a sailor, born in Londonderry, resided before conviction at Belfast, his friends reside at Londonderry; light brown hair, gray eyes, light brown eyebrows, broad nose, medium mouth, fresh complexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 2J inches high, bracelet, anchor, and shield on left forearm, square, compass, and dot back of left hand, ring on left middle finger and little finger, square and compass and dot, on back of right band. This man was released from Mountjoy Prison on Licence, the 16th February, 1888, and went to Belfast. He engaged as a sailor in a ship bound for America, on 30th ult., got £ 1 from the Captain to buy clothes, but failed to turn up on the 5th inst., when the ship sailed, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Yic., : ap. 112. ( 160 H. C.) Description of WILLIAM POTTER, wanted here on Warrant for having stolen on the 11th instant, from the ship " Speedy Row," now lying in the Alexander Basin, one suit of clothes, one pair sea boots, two guns, one telescope, and the sum of 18s., property of the Master of said ship:— He is a sailor, a native of Dublin, and about 48 years old, 5 feet S inches high, slight make, stooped shoulders, wears all his beard, which is dark turning gray, and the middle finger of one of his hands wants a joint; dressed when last seen in a short gray monkey jacket, dark trowsers, and Scotch cap. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. WILLIAM REDDY, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G. Division, 19th May, 1888. ( 156 H. C.) £ 10 REWARD. Stolen or strayed on the evening of the 8th instant, from the Royal Barracks, Dublin, FRANCIS CLARKE, aged 3 years and 4 months, dressed in a blue serge sailor suit, full face, blue eyes, fair hair, has a small birth mark on back near shoulders. The above reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the recovery of the child, and the prosecution of the person who has it unlawfully in his possession, on application to its father, Band Sergeant Francis Clarke, Royal Lancaster Regiment, Royal Barracks, Dublin. Description of HENRY MARTIN, wanted here on Warrant, for having unlawfully received by false pretences the sum of £ 1 witli intent to defraud:— He is about 40 years old, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout male, square shoulders, fair hair turning gray, no whiskers, slight moustache, fresh complexion, reddish face ; dressed in black jacket and tweed trowsers. Courtney, ( mother's surname Berrill), native of Drogheda, who stands charged with havi'g, on the 14th day of May, 1888, in the barony of Ferrard, parish * of St. Peter's, absconded froiu hii employment taking with him tho sum of £ 8, the property of his master Mr. Thomas Jordan, of Drogheda:— Bow legs, dark eyes, long nose, dark complexion, long face, slight make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 21 years of age, dark hair ; wore a round jerry hat, gray twee! coat,, trowsers, and vest; is a pawnbroker's assistant. PATRICK KENNEDY, embezz'ement, not arrestol; Huc- and- Cry, 17th April, ( 87195 50123.) | Tipperary, Description ot THOMAS GORMAN, native of Caliir, who stands charged with having, on the 10th day of May, 1888, in the barony of Iffa and Offa West, parish of Cahir, assaulted the police:— May have scratches or marks on face and head, blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 24 years of age, fair hair, wears all his beard which is fair and short; wore a dark tweed coat, dark brown trowsers, dark vest; is a soldier. O'BRIEN, native of Knockaginny, who stands charged with having, on the 2nd May, 1888, in the barony of Lower Dungannon, parish of Carnteel, set fire to a dwelling- house, the property of Thomas Callaghan, at Aughnacloy, county Tyrone:— Leans forward when walking, delicate appearance, dark eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 40 years of age, black hair; wore a black overcoat, black cloth trowsers, and vest; is of weak intellect, and addicted to drink ; is a suspended R. THE POLICE GAZETTE, OB HUE- AND- CBY, JUNE 12, 1888. left Dublin about six weeks ago, and it appears went to Belfast of which town he is a native. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for hV arrest. WILLIAM REDDT, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G. Division, 3rd May, 1888. ( 151 H. c.) Particulars relative to Convict WILLIAM JOHN M'CARTNEY, alias JOHN MURRAY, alias FITZGERALD, convicted at Belfast Quarter Sessions, on 30th October, 1883, 1, larceny, II. larceny and confessed to a previous conviction for felony, and sentenced to ( I.) ono week's imprisonment, and at expiration ( II.) 5 years' penal servitude, and 3 years' Police supervision:— 18 years of age on conviction, read and write, is an Episcopalian, single, is a labourer, prison, trade labourer, born at Aunahilt, county Down, resided before conviction at Belfast, his friends reside at Anderstown, Belfast:— Brown hair, brown eyes, dark brown eyebrows, small nose, large mouth, sallow complexion, oval visage, stout make, 5 feet 4 inches high *, largo scar on ball of left thumb, scar on head, small cut on forehead, right arm has been broken at elbow. This man was released on licence from Maryboro' Prison, on 20th October, 1887. Ho recently left his residence in Belfast without notifying same to the Police, and his presont whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under 5th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic., cap 112 ( 154 H. c.) Convict GEORGE KELLY, A 787, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 22nd May, 1888. ( 150 H. Wunted for the murder of Assistant Warder Webb, at Strangeways Prison, on Tuesday, the 22nd instant, CHARLES WOOD FIRTH, alias, CHARLES WILLIAMSON FIRTH, CHARLES WOOD, CHARLES WILLIAM FIRTH, CHARLES WILSON, CHARLES KITSON, JOHN JACKSON, EDWARD GRAHAM, FRED SMITH, & c., & c.:— Ago 33 years, 5 feet 5| inches high, round faco, fresh complexion, hazel eyes very prominont, dark brown bair, cut mark on nose, scar left sido of neck, mole left side of back, abscess mark on right or left groin, proportionate build, a plumber by trade, and a native of Birstal, in Yorkshire. FIRTH has worked in a foundry, and been employed as a stoker on sleam boats between Liverpool and New York. He has n small lump on the first finger of the left hand, which was caused by a cut from a knife, but which he can easily hide with his thumb. He has also a manner of not looking straight at the person with whom he is in conversation. FIRTH escaped from Wakefield Gaol on 9th August, 1883, where ho was undergoing a sentence of six months for horsestealing. When last seen he was dressed as follows: — Brown ribbed cloth jacket, brown cloth buttons, a white linen jacket with metal buttons, brown and red mixture tweed vest, and two peaked cap, but there is no doubt he will have since changed his clothing. For several months previous to his arrest FIRTH was in tho habit of travelling from town to town, and making friends with Captains of the Salvation Army, whose houses he afterwards plundered. Ho generally took lodgings with quiet respectable families. All Police Forces are earnestly requested to cause diligent search to be made for the above- named man, and should any information be obtained regarding him, to communicate without delay to C.
