EPPS'S GRATEFUL— COMFORTING COCOA MADE WITH BOILING MILK. THE SYBILLINE BOOKS. It is said that one day an old woman was seen going up to the palace o! Tarquin the Proud, King of Rome. When admitted into the king's presence she produced nine books, and offered to sell them to the king for 300 pieces of gold. He refused, and she went away, but soon returned and offered the king six books for the same money, telling him she had burnt three. He laughed at her asking the same price for Bix books as she had done for nine, and bade her begone. But after a time she again returned with only three books, having burnt three more, and again she asked the same price. The king was struck at the woman's conduct, and after con- sulting his councillors he bought the three books that were left for the original price. These were called the Sibylline Books, and were looked upon as the most precious things in Rome. They were believed to contain prophecies about the city, and whenever any danger threatened they were consulted. Surely the woman should have taken less for the three books than she asked for the nine 1 No, for as each book was burnt, those that remained became all the more valuable, the fewer there were the more precious would they be. Do we feel that about the years of our lives 1 When we were children, life seemed almost an endless thing to us, and the only thought which the end of the year brought was the thought of Christmas holidays. But since then many years have slipped away, and are gone for ever out of our reach. How many have we left to us 1 As each year flies by we must feel that those that remain to us become more and more precious. How, then, Bhall we spend them 1 As we will wish we had spent them when we come to the last one 1 " Lord, teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto ' Wisdom." Only a fool shuts his eyes to what is coming, and lives as if there were no future. What is coming 1 Death— Judgment— Eternity ; they come surely ; they come swiftly. Are we ready? " Prepare to meet thy God." " Now is the - accepted time." Just as I am— Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve, Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come. Now Ready, price One Shilling. FIFTEENTH YEAR. MAY'S BRITISH AND IRISH PRESS GlilDE FOR 1888.
