No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary lo forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. All Descriptions of persons whose apprehension is sought on a charge of Misdemeanour should be accompanied by a statement that a Warrant has been issued, and by the namo of the person in whose hands it is. But the Constabulary should remember that they cannot arrest a person charged with an offence of thia nature unless they have the Warrant in their possession when making the arrest. *.* Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears,, as without this Information the mistake cannot be rectified. I Description of ROBERT R. MATHEWS ( mother's surname Henry), native of Ballymena, who stands charged with having, on the 15th March, 1888, in the barony of Lower Toome, parish of Kirkinriola, fraud- ulently produced to Colonel Richard M. Studdert, Auditor for the Local Government Board, a bank pass- book, purporting to be the pass- book between the Guardians of Ballymena Union, and the Belfast Bunk, to which book tho name of William A. Young, Esq., Chairmun of said Guardians, was forged, whereby a fraud ol about £ 700 has been committed on the Guardians:— Smart active appearance, slight dark moustache, no beard or whiskers, brown eyes, long nose, pale sallow complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair ; wore a brown tweed coat, trowsers, and vest, and gray dust wat; is H Clerk to Poor Law Guardians. Description of JAMES ROBINSON, native of High Town, near Belfast, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 26th February last, in the barony of Upper Belfast, parish of Shankhill, feloniously broken into the Wolfhill Mill, at Wolfhill, in tho county of Antrim, and stolen therefrom a number of knives, and one sovereign, the property of the workers in said Mill:— Gray or blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 17 years of age, fair hair; wore a tweed cap with tw J peaks, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a millworker. Description of NANCY O'HAGAN, native of millquarter, who stands charged with having, between the 19th November, 1887, and 31st January, 1888, in the barony of Upper Toome, parish of Ballyscullion Grange, embezzled certain monies, received from Sergeant Michael Barron, and others; also with having obtayied goods under false pretences:— Slovenly in appearance, and bair thin on top of head from effects of a burn, gray eyes, regular nose, dirty swarthy complexion, thin face, stout make, 4 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 50 years of age, brown tinged with gray hair; wore a black striped shawl, buff coloured dress, strong boots, much worn, black bonnet. Has friends in Ballymena, and Cloughmills, and a sister named Sarah Irwin, in Dumbarton shire, Scotland; is a barrack servant. Warrant in hands of the Police. Antrim, February 13, 1888. Description of PETER BARKER ( Junior), ( mother's surname Conlan), native of Newlands, who stands charged with having, on the 4th and 5th of January, 1888, in the barony of Lower Belfast, parish of Glynn, had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl between the age of 13 and 16 years. For said offence he was bailed to appear at Larne Petty Sessions, on 24th January, 1888, but failed to do so. A Warrant for his arrest is in the hands of the Police at Larne :— Slightly freckled face, walks with a swagger, blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round lull face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 19 years of age, light brown hair, no beard, whiskers or moustache; wore a Glergarry cap, blue coat, tweed trowsers, and vest; is a gardener's assistant. Description of JAMES LYNCH, native of Drom- colloher, county Limerick, who stands charged with having, on the 15th January, 1888, in the barony of Orrery and Kilmore, parish of Kilbolane, had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl, between the age of 13 and 16 years :— Shaves all his face except moustache, which is black and bristly, dark eyes, short nose, red complexion, full face, very stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 45 years of age, dark hair; wore a low hard hat, very long skirt coat, moleskin trowsers and vest; is a mason. Description of MAURICE CONNORS, native of Coolykerane, who stands charged with having, on the 25th December, 1887, in ths barony of Duhallow, parish of Cullen, stabbed Timothy Shine, of Churchill, in the left side- with a penknife, thereby placing his life in danger :— Drooped shoulders, long neck, gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, small thin face, slight make, 5 feet 9J inches high, about 19 years of age, fair hair, no beard, whiskers, or moustache; wore a brown solt hat, dark frock coat, dark corduroy trowsers, and dark vest; is a farmer's son. Description of EDMOND GAW, mother's surname, Gault, native of Belfast, who stands charged with having, on the 8th May, 1887, in the barony of Upper Belfast, parish of Shankhill, feloniously set fire to a certain shed with intent to injure, and having been indicted at Summer Assizes, 1887, he has since failed to appear and a Bench Warrant has been issued for his apprehension:— Has lost a finger of left hand, long neck, slightly drooped shoulders ; gray eyes, long nose, pale complexion, long thin face, slight make, 5 leet 9 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair; wore a dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest, when last seen; is a yarn bundler, a keeling master, a cabinet maker, a carver, and a French polisher. Description of JOHN VERNON, alias JOHN M'ILVERNON, native of Ballydavy, who stands charged with having, on the 9th day of December, 1887, at Ballylenaghan, in the barony of Upper Castlereagh, parish of Knockbreda, unlawfully and feloniously broken and entered the dwelling- house of John Martin, end stealing therefrom one silver Geneva watch, with imitation gold chain attached; one pair of men's laced boots, with hooks at top, too- capped; a meerschaum pipe, and £ 13, made up as follows:— One five pound note, lour one pound notes, two sovereigns, and lour halt sovereigns. Description of WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, native ol Brigh, county Tyrone, who stands charged with having, on the 10th day of February, 1888, in tho barony of Loughinshollen, parish of Desertlynn, embezzled the sura of £ 40, tho money of the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway Company:— Square shoulders, good looking, smart appearance, light fair moustache, no whiskers, blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round red face, very stout make, 5 feet 8 inches hi? h, about 26 years of age, fair hair; wore a brown hard hat, gray coat, dark trowsers, and vest; is a stationraaster. Description of THOMAS GRIFFIN, ( mother's surname, Anne Corcoran), native of Bolton, England, who stands charged with having, on the 16th day of March, 1888, in the barony of Gallon, parish of Killedan, stolen £ 3 7s., the property of Thomas Roach, of Comdorra, in the said parish and county, viz., Three ono pound notes and seven shillings in silver :— Speaks with an English accent; tender eyes, regular noso, fresh complexion, round face, slender make, 4 feet 3 inches high, about 15 years of age, dark hair; wore a light tweed straight peaked cap, light tweed coat, trowsew, and vest. Description of THOMAS WALSH, ( mother's surname Kate Mullen), native of Ahena parish of Togheen, barony of Claremorris, who stands charged with having, on the 5th March, 1838, in the barony of Kilmain, parish of Ballinrobe, seriously assaulted Martin Flynn, of Ahena, fracturing his skull and en- dangering his life:— Walks wide and slovenly, blue eyes, large nose, fair complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 40 years of age, fair hair turning gray ; wore an old dark frieze coat, dark corduroy trowsers, dark frieze vest; is a small farmer. Description of JAMES MURRAY, alias BROWN, alias WHITE, native of Painstown, county Meath, who stands charged with having on the night of 27th or morning of 28th June, 1887, in the barony of Lower Duleek, parish of Duleek, stolen 6 store heifers, value £ 60, the property of P. Matthews, Esq., J. F., Mount Hanover, which have since been recovered:— Birth mark behind left ear, cupped on back of neck, speaks with a strong American accent, generally carries a long whip; gray eyes, long nose, sallow complexion, long thin face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 40 years of age, brown hair; is a Carpenter. The above while undergoing a term of 18 months imprisonment, for cattle stealing, in Kilmainham Goal, was removed therefrom on 28th August, 1887, to Richmond District Lunatic Asylum. Dublin, from which he escaped on 11th February^ 1888. The Police at Duleek, county Meath, hold a Warrant for his arrest. He wore the Prison dress, which consisted of brown tweed cap, brown frieze jacket, vest, and trowsers. This is the man described in Hue- and- Cry, of 12th July, 1837, under county Meath. • Slane, March, 21, 1883. ( 82411 c.— 50187.) Tipperary, AMENDED DESCRIPTION. Description of A YOUNG MAN, unknown, who stands charged with having, at or about 8 p. m., 16th January, 1883, in the barony of Kilnamanagh Lower, parish of Donohill, fired three shots from a revolver at Valentine Ryan, Esq., j. p., in his house at Chadville, near Cappawhite:— Full large round bullet shaped eyes, blue or gray ia colour, straight nose, fair complexion, oval face, mediu n make, youthful, ® soft athletic looking, with rather square shoulders, 5 foot 9 or 10 inches high, about 18 or 20 years of age, fair or light brown hair, highly arched eyebrows, fair or light brown in colour, and evenly marked from end to end ; regular teeth in upper jaw ; wore a double peaked light gray cap and dark clothes. Westmeath Description of JOHN DRUM, native of Delvin, who stands charged with having, on the 14th January, 1888, in the barony of Delvin, parish of Delvin, endeavoured to obtain goods by false pretences, and with having failed to appear at Delvin Petty Sessions, on 30th January, 1888, on Summons:— Brown eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 20 years of age; wore a browij overcoat, gray tweed trowsers, and- vest. Description of Quarter- Master Sergeant GEORGE CRAWFORD, Army Service Corps, Portobello Barracks, Dublin, wanted here on Warrant, for stealing a cheque for £ 25:— He i » 27 years old, 5 feet 7f inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, dark moustache, rest of face shaved, brown eyes, with slight cast in right, scar on left shin. He was born at Shankhill, Belfast. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. WILLIAM REDDT, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G. Division, 15th February, 1838. Particulars relative to Convict WILLIAM WILSON, A 818, convicted at Dublin, at the Commission, on 8th February, 1884, for larceny fiom person, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude :—- 48 years of age on conviction, married, is a poulterer; born at Plymouth; resided before conviction in Dublin, his friends reside at Gallogate, Glasgow :— Sandy hair, blue eyes, sandy eyebrows, large ncse, small month, fair complexion, oval- worn visage, medium make, 5 feet 4 inches high ; lost a number of teeth. This man was released from Maryboro' Prison on licence, 13th January, 1888, and stated he was going to reside at Naas. He has not reported himself, and his present whereabouts is unknown. JOHN D. ELLIOTT, embezzlement, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 6th December* 1888. ENGLISH POLICE. Blackburn. Wanted in this borough, under a warrant for embezzling a large sum of money, the property of his employers, WILLIAM RAWLINSON, a corn miller's traveller, 37 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stoutish build, fresh complexion, round full face, brown hair, and light brown moustache, no whiskers. He absconded on the 27th ult., and was then dressed in a short black Melton cloth overcoat, with black velvet collar, brown check tweed suit, black billycock hat, and boots. Supposed to have a large sum of money in his possession. Please cause all possible enquiries to be made at hotels, shipping offices, and other likely places, and if arrested, or any information respecting him be obtained, communicate with GEORGE LEWIS, Chief Constable. Borough Police Office, Blackburn, 10th March, 1888. ( 140 H. C.) Cumberland. Description of JOHN READ, of 97, Peel- road, Bootle, near Liverpool, Weighman, charged with stealing £ 14 6s., from a dwelling house, in Penrith, on the 29th ult.; he left Penrith same day by train for Preston :— Age 38 years, height 5 feet 11 inches, pale delicate looking, has a cough, big roman nose, blue eyes, dark hair, small light moustache, beard on chin, and slender figure; dressed in black top coat with velvet collar, dark tweed coat, dark trowscrs, and vest, and low hard hat. He is an ex- policeman, and is supposed to be a native of Liverpool; he was under the influence of drink when he left Penrith, and he may be fouiid lodging in a public house. , To be arrested, and information sent to Superin- tendent FOWLER, Penrith, who holds the Warrant for his apprehension. Description of THOMAS MICHAEL ELLISON, Junr., Solicitor's Clerk, who absconded on the morning of the 4th inst., and whose apprehension is sought under Warrant, for forgery :— Age 26 years, height, 5 feet 6 inches, build proportionate, square shoulders, complexion fresh, eyes gray, hair dark brown ( cut short), short side whiskers and moustache ( which he may have shaved off), features rather long, cheek bones and ears prominent, and largish head, walks hurriedly, with short quick steps, and leans forward from" nip& v Is fond of horse- racing, and probably may_ be found in the company of betting men, or he may endeavour to emigrate. Supposed to be dressed in dark cloth overcoat and trowsers, high silk hat, and boots, and had in his possession a black portmanteau. It is earnestly requested that Chief Officers of Police cause immediate inquiry to be made in their ^ M^^ tive districts for the above- named, and, if met apprehend, and wire to the undersigned, when an officer shall be sent. JOHN WILLIAMSON, described in Hue- and- Cry, of 28th October, 1887; not arrested. ( 107 H. C.) Kendal, Shopbreaking Between the hours of 8 p. m. on the 17th, and 7 a. m. on the 18th inst., the grocer's shop of Greenwood and Little wood, Kendal, had been forcibly entered by means of breaking a pane of glass in a side door, and th* reby effecting an entrance and stealing therefrom about £ 2 in money, viz.:— One half- sovereign and the remainder in half- crowns, florins, shillings, sixpenny pieces, and from ten to fifteen shillings in bronze j one shilling's worth of postage stamps, a quantity of biscuits, & c. Also stolen from the " Kendal and County News- paper Publishing Offices," which adjoins the back premises of the above- named, between the hours of 7 p. m. on tho 17th, and 7 a. m. on the 18th inst , by means of breaking a pane of glass in the window, and thereby effecting an entrance, about five shillings in silver, a small quantity of bronze, a penny with a hole through centre, ono shilling's worth of penny and half- penny postage stamps, and a postal order for two shillings bearing tho Conistob Post Office Stamp, February, 1888. The offender or offenders may have some black printing ink upon their clothes and hands. No suspicion; supposed by tramps; four boot impressions have been taken in plaster of Paris. PIERCE, about 33 years ot age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, no whiskers, slight dark moustache, clean smart appearance. 2.— BRICE, about 28 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, proportionate build, round face, sallow complexion, brown whiskers round face, but may be clean shaved; dresses respectably. The first man, Pierce, was living in St. Giles'- street, in this town, with his wife, a tall, good- looking woman, fresh complexion, and brown hair cut short, and a little boy about 4 years of age. Another man, said to be his brother, James Pierce, was living with him, and assisting in the business, which was styled " The Bon Marche ; " the latter is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, clear dark complexion. The second man, Brice, was living with his wife at 61, Sheep- street, in this town; Mrs. Brice is a stout woman, and taller than her husband. An old man and woman ( supposed parents of " Pierce.") lived in the Horsemarket in this town, and assisted in carrying on the business of both firms, such as making or repairing cheap furniture, & c., making UD, & c.; the old man was 60 years of age, very short, with gray ha^ and generally wore a high hat, and carried a stick. It is supposed that the whole of the above- described will be found trading together in other names. Their modus operandi is to open shops in names only slightly differing from some well- known firm in the town : for instance, Brice ( above- described) opened a shop iff Sheep- street, in this town, as " Brice & Co.," whereas, in a piincipal thoroughfare, a large firm exists " Brice & Sons;" it is thus easy to obtain a quantity of goods without enquiries, which these people have been doing, and then sending the same to Auction Sales in the town, and after thus disposing of a considerable quantity they leave without notice, and are not heard of again. Letters of enquiry have been received from all parts where these p* ople have sent for goods, including furniture, rugs, mats, bedding, fancy goods, flannel, table cloths, woollen goods, & c., & c. Should any person or persons, similar to description of above, be k lown to have opened recently in your town, kindly communicate with me at once before apprehqfiding, and some one shall be sent who can identify them. Wanted at Selkirk, on a Sheriff's Warrant, charged with the crime of falsehood, fraud, and wilful imposition, committed here on the 23rd December, 1887, a man, who gave the name of J. H. GUTHRIE ( supposed fictitious), stated that he was a commercial traveller, residing at 122, Downsell- road, Leyton- road, Stratford, London:— About 32 or 31 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches in height, dark hair, supposed slightly frizzled, dark side whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin, fresh complexion, ordinary build, rather good- looking, of respectable appearance, and speaks with an English accent. Dressed, when seen hare, in a black twilled worsted suit, dark overcoat, and dress hat with band, and carried a black handbag containing a quantity of transfers. GUTHRIE'S practice is to call on painters and represent himself as the representative of J. & W. Gray, & Co., Transfer Painters, London ; asks them to become agents for the sale of transfers, and states that those who agree to take an agency will receive a • draught screen, value £ 5, covered with transfers, and that pattern books, circulars, and other advertising notices will be forwarded in a jew days. Samples of transfers are then left, and money obtained on the strength of the foregoing representations, which have been found to be false. This person is supposed to be the same as described in the Police Gazette of 15th August, 1881, Case No. 15; 17th October, 1884, Case No. 94; 3nth October, 1885, Case No. 14; and 15th April, 1887, Case No. 47. It is requested that particulir search and inquiry be made tor this person, and if found that he be appre- hended and notice sent to the subscriber, who will send for him.
