r THE Police Gazette, OR HUE- AND- CRY. Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. REGULATIONS. HT All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover, addressed to the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, authenticated by a Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. All Descriptions of persons whose apprehension is sought on a charge of Misdemeanour should be accompanied by a statement that a Warrant has been issued, and by the name of the person in whose hands it is. But the Constabulary should remember ftiat they cannot arrest a person charged with an offence of this nature unless they have the Warrant in their possession when making the arrest. Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this information the mistake cannot be reuuiued. Prison and Police Authorities are particularly requested to be good enough to inform the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, die., anil of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Hue- and- Cry " no longer necessary. Description of STAFFORD WILSON, native of Connor, and JOHN CRAIG ( mother's name Mawha), native of Ferniskey, who stand charged with having, on the 11th October, 1887, in the barony of Lower Antrim, parish of Connor, unlawfully assaulted Jane Hyndman, and maliciously broke the shop window of Joseph Hyndman, of Kells— 1. May have a fresh wound on forehead, dark eyes, long noso, dark complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 24 years of age, dark hair ; wore a low black bat, dark coat, black trowsers, and dark vest; is a farm labourer, and has been employed in Govan, Scotland, in a timber yard. 2. Dark eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, long face, medium make, 6 feet high, about 31 years of age, dark hair; wore a tweed cap ( light colour), dark coat, trowsers, and vest; was in the R. I. C. and in tho army, discharged from both, is a farmer's son. Warrants for their arrest in the hands of the Police at Connor. Antrim, October 14, 1887. ( 84453 c 44488.) Description of ROBERT JAMES DAVIDSON, native of Carclinty, county Antrim, who stands charged with having, on the 23rd September, J887, at Skerry West, in the barony of Kilconway, parish of Newtowncrumlin, presented a gun at, and threatened to shoot Thomas Tafts, a Gamekeeper ;— Smart active appearance, no beard or whiskesp, blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, about 23 years of age, very fair hair; wore a brown tweed coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a labourer. The Royal Irish Constabulary at Bally- mena hold a warrant for his arrest. Ballymena, Sept. 26, 1887. ( 84042 c— 43847.) 5th of August, 1887, in the barony of Upper Belfast, parish of Donegore, attempted to commit a rape on one Roseanna M'Millen, of Donegore:— Round shoulders, dark eyes, aquiline nose, dark complexion, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 35 years of age, dark hair; wore a low hard hat, gray coat, dark trowsers, patches on knees ; is a labourer. Description of DANIEL M'CARTHY, native of Mallow, who stands charged with having, on or about the 7th October, 1887, in the baronyfof Fermoy, parish of Mallow, feloniously embezzled the sum of £ 71 16*. 9d„ or thereabouts, the property of the Town Commissioners of Mallow: — Down- looking appearance, short neck, dark sunken eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, round full face, very stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 36 years of age ; wore a hard black hat, black coat, trowsers, and vest; is a rate collector. Description of PATRICK ROONEY, native place not known, WILLIAM HENRY DEACON, native of Glasgow, JOHN M'DONNALL, WILLIAM LEE, EDWARD BARRY, native places not known, and JOHN JAMESON, native of Dublin, who stand charged with having, on the 30th July, 1887, in the barony of Islands, parish of Drumcliffe, stolen the sum of twenty sovereigns, from the house of John M'Gann of Market- street, Ennis:— 1. Bald on top of head, slightly round shoulders, smart appearance, wore all his beard clipped rather close, turning gray, gray moustache, dark blue eyes, cocked nose, pale complexion, regular face, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 60 years of age, gray hair; wore a round hard black hat, rather long black coat, trowsers, and vest. 2. Scar on bridge of nose, bald on top of head smart appearance, dark side whiskers turning gray, clipped close, shaves his chin, dark moustache, dark eyes, hooked nose, fresh complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 50 years of age, dark hair turning gray; wore a brown soft hat ( American style), tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 3. Lost some teeth from front of mouth, dark brown moustache, sullen looking, dark piercing eyes, sallow complexion, thin face, active make, 5 feet 7^ inches high, about 30 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a round black hat, brown tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 4. Round shoulders, rather short neck, small fair moustache, gray eyes, thin nose, fair complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 30 years of age, fair hair, wore a round black hard hat, brown tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 5. Small fair moustache, small gray eyes, slight nose, fair complexion, regular face, active make, 5 fieet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, fair hair; wore a round black hard hat, brown tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 6. Very small fair moustache, blue eyes, short cocked nose, fair complexion, round face, very stout make, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, about 25 years of age, fair hair; wore a round hard black hat, light coloured dust coat, striped tweed trowsers, and vest. These six men returned for trial on 5 th August. Any information regarding them, including previous convictions, to be addressed to District Inspector at Ennis. Ennis, An ust 7, 18* 7. Description of the undernamed young offender, who, on the 5th October, 1887, absconded from the St. Patrick's Reformatory School, at Upton, county Cork:— JAMES SHERIDAN, II years of age, 4 feet 2 inches high, proportionate make, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, regular nose, medium mouth ; formerly belonged to Mallow; parents reside at Mallow, and are travelling tinkers. The school dress consists of corduroy trowsers and sleeved corduroy waistcoat, tweed pea jacket, blue striped shirt, all with Reformatory Stamp, Glengarry cap, nailed boots, fastened with leather straps. Two of the boy's brothers, aged 17 and 14 years, came to see him on Wednesday last, and took him away. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expenses of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. ( 102 H. c.) Description of JEREMIAH HURLEY and JAMES HURLEY ( mothers' surname Burke), natives of Kilbarry, Dunmanway, who stand charged with having, on the 24th day of September, 1887, in the barony of East Division West Carbery, parish of Fanlobbus, seriously assaulted Robert Cambridge, Sheriff's bailiff, and James Bruen, Constable Royal Irish Constabulary, and rescued cattle from the cus- tody of the former :—• 1. Heavy gait, two front teeth broken, dark eyes, long nose, yellow complexion, long thin face, stout make, 5 feet ten inches high, about 32 years of age, black hair cut short; wore a black frieze coat, gray tweed trowsers and vest; is a farmer's son. 2. Rather broken nose, dark gray eyes, sallow com- plexion, long thin face, slight make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 21 years of age, black hair cut short; wore a black frieze coat, gray tweed trowsers and vest ; is a farmer's son, and brother to No. 1. ( 83353 c.— 42755.) Limerick. Description of TWO MEN, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 26th September, 1887, in the barony of Glenqnin, parish ot Kileedy, forcibly taken and carried away one single barrelled rifle, the property of John Manley; the rifle was an old one of Military pattern and the men were accompanied by a black greyhound. 1. Ill looking, gray or blue eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 35 or 40 years of age, light brown hair; wore a round hard hat, gray tweed coat and trowsers ; supposed to be a farmer. 2. Rather good looking, gray eyes, regular nose, fresh oomplexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 20 years of age, light hair ; wore a round hard hat, black frieze coat, corduroy trowsers ; supposed to be a farmer. Description of PATRICK SHEEHAN, mother's surname FITZGERALD, native of Cloghadoolarty, who stands charged with having, on the 11 th day of September, 1887, in the barony of Small County, parish of Fedamore, assaulted and wounded James Kavanagh, by stabbing him in the head with a knife or other sharp instrument, thereby placing his life in danger:— Gray eyes, regular nose, swarthy complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 24 or 25 years of age, dark brown hair ; wore a round soft black hat, black frieze coat, dark tweed trowsers, and dark vest; is a labourer. Description of WILLAIM PARKE ( mother's surname Crawford), native of Castlerock, who stands charged with having, on the 5th October, 1887, in the half- barony of Coleraine, parish of Aghadowey, assaulted one James Graham, by stabbing him in the neck and side with a knife or some sharp instrument, thereby causing him grievous bodily harm :— Walks with a swaggering gait, blue eyes, cocked nose, fair complexion, long face, stout make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 19 years of age ; wore a blue hunting cap, brown tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. Description of JOHN COLLINS, native of Drogheda, who stands charged with having, on the 10th day of September, 1887, at Beamore, in the barony of Lower Duleek, parish of St. Mary's, stolen two heifers, value £ 10 each, the property of Mrs. M. Matthews, Ballymakenny, county Louth, since re- covered in Salford Market:— Blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 35 years of age ; wore a hard hat, tweed coat, dark trowsers and vest; is a cattle dealer and farmer. Description of a MAN, name and native place un- known, who stands charged with having, on the 8th Septembor, 1887, in the barony of Ratoath, parish of Dunshaughlin, attempted to unlawfully and carnally know Eliza Kavanagh, a girl under 13 years of age :— Walks with a slight stoop, brown whiskers, turning gray at jaws, shaves chin, but had a few days' growth of beard thereon ; florid complexion, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 50 years of age ; wore a gray tweed coat, trowsers, and plaid vest; appearance of a drover. Description of WILLIAM O'BRIEN ( mother's surname Hogan), native of Garavane, county Limerick, who stands charged with having, on the 4th day of October, 1887, in the barony of Owney and Arra, parish of Abington, seriously assaulted one Thomas Kennedy, by striking him on the head with a tumbler, in the public house of Nicholas Nolan, of Barnadomeeny, thereby placing his life in danger :— Walks heavily, very good looking, small fair moustache, which may be cut off, blue eyes, long nose, fresh complexion, oval face, medium make, 5 feet 11 inches high, about 24 years of age, fair hair; wore a soft brown hat, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a farmer's son. Description of AARON HELLER, native of Russian Poland, who stands charged with having on the 21st day of September, 1887, in the Municipal Borough, parish of St. John's Within, absconded from Waterford, feloniously taking with him a sum of £ 21 15s. sterling, and a quantity of tweed and Cashmere, value for about £ 2 18s. sterling, which was entrusted to his care to be conveyed to Kilkenny, and which is the property of one William J. Diamond:— Walks with a short quick step, very high forehead, grey patch over one ear, speaks bad English, small dark eyes, regular nose, sunburnt complexion, oval face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 42 years of age ' but looks younger), dark hair, dark brown beard mixed with grey; wore a black hard hat, black morning coat, striped tweed trowsers, and black morning vest; is a Commercial Traveller for Drapery house; may be accompanied by a small woman, about twenty years old. Waterford, Sept. 26, 1887. ( 84056 c.— 43873). Description of AUGUSTUS E. FITT, native, of Limerick, who stands charged with having, on the 13th day of September, 1887, in the barony of Muni- cipal Borough, parish of 1 rinity Within, absconded from the Waterford Branch of the Provincial Bank, feloniously taking with him a sum of £ 457 sterling, which he received in said Bank in his capacity as a Clerk in said branch:— Walks with a military appear- ance, very erectly, hollow in back, turns in his toes slightly when walking, rather small and well shaped feet, good looking, very pleasing countenance, remark- ably white teeth, shades all face, wore a dark moustache; blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, legolar face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, aootit 35 years of age, dark hair ; probably wore a black hard hat, brown tweed coat, trowsers and vest, d irk top coat, generally wears a sack made coat; Cashier in Waterford Branch of Provincial Bank. Description of TWO MEN, names md native place unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 18th September, 1887, about 1 o'clock, p. m., in the barony of Clonloion, parish of Ballyloughloe, visited the house of Michael Hindes, of Shurock, put him on his knees, beat him with a stick on the head, fired a shot from a pistol near his face, and threatened him : — 1. Stout make, about 5 feet 9 inches high, about 35 years of age ; wore a gray frieze frock coat, and soft black hat. 2. Smaller than No. 1, medium make, about 35 years of age; wore a gray tweed coat, gray trowsers and vest. Moate, September 19, 1887. ( 84018 c.— 43813.) Wicklow. Description of CHRISTOPHER DOOLAN, native of 4, Watery- lane, Old Kilmainham, Dublin, or may be found at Kingstown, where he lived for some time with a cabbage woman, who stands charged with having, on the 5th September, 1887, in the barony of Rathdown, parish of Powerscourt, stolen 3 sovereigns, the property of Margaret Byrne:— Gray or blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, slight make, 5 feet high, about 14 years of age, red sandy hair; wore a two- peaked tweed cap, long black coat, gray tweed trowsers, and dark vest. Warrant issued for his arrest. Bray, September 7, 1887. ( 83630 c.— 13187. DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE, G Division; Particulars relative to Convict JOHN SMITH, A 747, convicted at Maryboro,' Queen's County, at tho Summer Assizes, on 9th July, 1883, for stealing, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude:— 66 years of age on conviction, single, carpenter, born at Bally- jamesduff, county Cavan, resided before conviction in Dublin, his friends reside at Bride- street, Dublin; gray hair, blue eyes, gray eyebrows, regular nose, large mouth, fresh complexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 3 inches high ; left little finger contracted, cut scars on face. This man was released on licence from Mountjoy Prison, on lst August, 1887, and went to reside in Dublin. He notified to the Metropolitan Police on the 24th ult. his intention of going to Carlow, but he has not reported himself at the latter place, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5 th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic., cap. 112. ( 97 H. C.) Particulars relative to Convict PATRICK MORRISSY, A 676, convicted at Ros- common Spring Assizes, on 14th March, 1883, for felony of a gun, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude :— 22 years of age on conviction, single, is a labourer, born in Moylough, county Galway, resided before conviction at Moylough, where his friends reside; brown hair, blue eyes, dark brown eyebrows, small nose, medium mouth, fresh complex- ion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 8f inches high. This man was released from Mountjoy Prison, on Licence the 3rd of June, 1887, and went to reside in Dublin. He left his lodgings, 123, Francis- street, without reporting to Police, and hi3 present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. ( 97 H. C.) Convict THOMAS HAYDEN, A 710, not ar- rested; Hue- and- Cry, 23rd August, 1887. Convict JAMES MURPHY alias LAWLOR, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 19th August, 1887. JOHN T. FLEMING, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 25th August, 1887. Convict JOHN BURNS, not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 2nd August, 1887. ( 83 H. C.) ENGLISH POLICE. CATHERINE DARCY, not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 30th August, 1887. ( 81344 c.— 42893.) Bootle. IMPORTANT.—£ 5 REWARD. Wanted here for stealing £ 113 odd, from the barracks at Seaforth, near Liverpool, and also for deserting from the Royal Artillery :— 1. Gunner JOHN BROWN, about 24 years old, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, scar on right forearm and cn forehead, two small scars on back, " 2" tattooed on back of left hand; groom and coachman by trade. Native of Manchester. 2. Gunner JAMES WILLIAM SMYTH, about 20 years old, 5 feet 9f inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, gray eyeg, scar on forehead, " J. W." and anchor tattooed on left forearm, slightly flat- footed ; servant and native of Stephney, Lincoln, Lincolnshire. Both have taken their regimentals, but in all proba- bility will not be wearing them. Smyth left behind a letter addressed " Miss Pook, Gold- hill, Farnham, Surrey," and may have gone there. A person ( evidently a soldier) has written Brown, asking him to be at Navan, about thirty miles from Dublin, next Sunday; Brown may have gone or go as requested. Please have every inquiry made, and if found arrest, and communicate with the Superintendent, County Police Office, Bootle, near Liverpool, who will pay the reward for the arrest and conviction of the thieves. Description of JOHN IVEY, who was recently the Agent at Penrith of the Singer Manufacturing Com- pany, who is charged with misappropriating £ 7 2s. 9d., belonging to the Company :— 33 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fresh complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, lightish brown moustache, no whiskers, proportionate figure, active and square build; wore a brown check tweed jacket suit; native of the South of England. Before coming to Penrith he was in the same employ, ment at Newcastle- on- Tyne ; has been in the army, and also in the Forfar Militia. Warrant issued. Information to SUPERINTENDENT FOWLER, Cotaty Police Office, Penrith. Constabulary Office, Penrith, Cumberland, 22nd September, 1887. ( 98 H. C.) THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1887. Liverpool. O ~ £ 50 REWARD. Absconded on the 26th ultimo, and now charged on a warrant with fraudulently appropriating a large sum of money belonging to the City and County Finance Company, Limited, of this City, JOHN ALLONBY, a Director and Chairman of the Company, 38 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, medium build, small even noticeable features, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, aquiline nose, has occasionally a peculiar way of rolling one of his eyes, the lower lip falls when speaking, as though about to whistle, small hands, and has a habit of rubbing them when speaking, has a fair knowledge of the French and Spanish language. Wore a light gray tweed suit, light cloth overcoat, white linen shirt, turn down collar, light colored tie, black billycock hat, and a pair of heavy shooting boots. Was last heard of on the 27th ultimo, at Birkenhead, where he posted a letter to a friend in Liverpool. Tho Police arc particulary requested to make every possible enquiry at Shipping Offices, Hotels, and other likely places for accused, and if found, arrest, and telegraph to GEORGE WILLIAMS, Chief Superintendent. The above Reward will be paid by the Company for the arrest and conviction of Allonby. Detective Department, Central Police Office. Liverpool, 7th October, 1887. ( 104 H. C.) Macclesfield. x Wanted in this borough, under Warrant, on a charge of embezzlement, (£ 82 14s, 1 Id.) JOHN GOSLING, a clerk, 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stout, broad shoulders, dark complexion, black hair, small dark moustache, no whiskers, small eyes, peculiar Japanese or almond shape, and has a dul1, heavy, surly countenance; respectably dressed in a black suit and black billycock hat. Please cause careful enquiries to be made at shipping offices, as it is supposed he has emigrated to America, or will do so. He left here on Monday morning, the 10th instant. M'Gregor, Glasgow," stamped on case; one ot the small glasses and a piece of the ivory mounting wanting. On the 23rd instant— A small silver geneva watch, No. 44966, maker — , white dial, stoel hands, carved cases plain ring on back outside case ( ring wanting). Silver hunting lever watch. No. 185 « 7, maker " John Fisher & Son, Glasgow," white dial, gold hands, and steel seconds, dinge near edge of back case, having attached a gold Albert, 9 carat, long and small link alternately with gold ring, having buckle with small diamond in centre for appendage ; also gold scarf pin ( horse shoe pattern). On the 25th instant— Silver half- hunting lover watch, No. 53139, maker " Brown, Duke- street, Kilmarnock," white dial, gold hands and steel seconds, carved cases, blue enamelled figures on front case, and small glass wanting ; glass inside cracked opposite chapter vi., having attached a silver Albert ( curb pattern). The above Reward is offered by Mr. Crichton to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thieves, and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount of property recovered. Wanted here for theft of £ 886, consisting of £ 500 in £ 1 notes, British Linen Company's bank; £ 85 in £ 5 notes, other banks; £ 271 in £ 1 notes, various banks, and £ 30 in £ 5 notes, Bank of England, from the British Linen Company's Bank, Charing- cross, on 25th inst.:— lst. A man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark brown whiskers, cut short, and heavy dark moustache; dressed in a dark tweed suit and round felt black hat. 2nd. About same age and height, dressed in a brown tweed suit, and black felt hat. 3rd. A man about 40 years of age, tall and stout made, round full face, no whiskers, heavy dark brown moustache; dressed in dark tweed coat and vest, light- coloured trowsers and black felt hat. 4th. A man from 35 to 40 years of age, short and stout, dark brown whiskers and moustache; dressed in a dark tweed suit, and black ( thinks soft) felt hat. All spoke with slight foreign accent ( thinks German) ; and one of them carried a small leather bag. While three of the men kept the bank teller and clerk in conversation, at front of the counter, the fourth man went round behind the teller, into his box, and lifted the bundle of notes— the door of the box being left open. The above Reward is offered by the Bank Directors to any person or persons who will give such inform - tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the Thieves. The person after described was convicted before the Sheriff Court, Perth, on 11th August, 1887, on a charge of killing grouse out of season, and was sentenced to pay a fine of £ 33 within ten days, or suffer 88 days imprisonment. As he has not paid his fine, a Sherrift's Warrant has now been issued for his apprehension : — ALEXANDER MACDONALD BEATON, a mason, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches in height, ordinary make, dark hair and moustache, swarthy complexion, a native of Strathardle, Perthshire, but has spent a good part of his time in Dundee. The police are requested to search for and apprehend the accused, and, failing payment of the fine, convey direct to Perth, or wire to the subscriber^ who will immediately send for him. J.
