THE Police Gazette, OR HUE- AND- CRY. Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. R EGTJL A TIOTiTS. All Notices intonded for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover, addressed to the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castlo, authenticated, by a Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies anu such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. All Descriptions of persons whose apprehension is sought on a charge of Misdemeanour should be accompanied by a statement that a Warrant has been issued, and by the name of the person in whose hands it is. But the Constabulary should remember that they cannot arrest a person charged with an offence of this nature unless they have the Warrant in their possession when making the arrest. Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this information the mistake cannot be rectified. Prison and Police Authorities are particularly requested to be good enough to inform the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, ifcc., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Hue- and- Cry" no longer necessary. DUBLIN, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1887. NOTICE. The composition of the Hue- and- Cry will bo found arranged for easy reference as follows:— N ( a.) Regulations on top of first page. ( b.) Apprehensions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY. Antrim. Description of TWO PERSONS, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 5th August, 1887, in the barony of Lower Toome, parish of Kirkinriola, obtained a gold watch, chain, and diamond cut gold brooch and ear- rings, by false pretences, all value for £ 9 10s :— 1. Gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, full face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 35 years of age, dark hair, dark moustache, beard, and whiskers; wore a black cloth coat, light tweed trowscrs, and black cloth vest; dressed as a clergy- man, with low soft black hat. Has been in America, and will likely endeavour to return there ; apparently a clergyman. 2. Red birth mark on left side of neck, gray eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 25 years of age, fair hair; wore a white straw hat trimmed with white lace, and cream coloured silk dress ; wife of above. The Police at Ballymena hold a Warrant for arrest of both the above. Ballymena, August 8, 1887. ( 83040 o.— 42272.) ption of JAMES WALLS, native of n, who stands charged with having, on the ist, 1887, in the barony of Upper Belfast, ) onegore, attempted to commit a rape on roseanna M'Millen, of Donegore:— Round shoulders, dark eyes, aquiline nose, dark complexion, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 35 years of age, dark hair; wore a low hard hat, gray coat, dark trowsers, patches on knees ; is a labourer. Description of PATRICK ROONEy, native place not known, WILLIAM HENRY DEACON, native of Glasgow, JOHN M'DONNELL, WILLIAM LEE, EDWARD BARRY, native places not known, and JOHN JAMESON, native of Dublin, who stand charged with having, on the 30th July, 1887, in the barony of Islands, parish of Drumcliffe, stolen the sum of twenty sovereigns, from the house of John M'Gann of Market- street, Ennis:— 1. Bald on top of head, slightly round shoulders, smart appearance, wore all his beard clipped rather close, turning gray, gray moustache, dark blue eyes, cocked nose, pale complexion, regular face, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 60 years of age, gray hair ; wore a round hard black hat, rather long black coat, trowsers, and vest. 2. Scar on bridge of nose, bald on top of head smart appearance, dark side whiskers turning gray, clipped close, shaves his chin, dark moustache, dark eyes, hooked nose, fresh complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 50 years of age, dark hair turning gray; wore a brown soft hat ( American style), tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 3. Lost some teeth from front of mouth, dark brown moustache, sullen looking, dark piercing eyes, sallow complexion, thin face, active make, 5 feet 7- Jf inches high, about 30 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a round black hat, brown tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 4. Round shoulders, rather short neck, small fair moustache, gray eyes, thin nose, fair complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 30 years of age, fair hair, wore a round black hard hat, brown tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 5. Small fair moustache, small gray eyes, slight nose, fair complexion, regular face, active make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, fair hair ; wore a round black hard hat, brown tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 6. Very small fair moustache, blue eyes, short cocked nose, fair complexion, round face, very stout make, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, about 25 years of age, fair hair; wore a round hard black hat, light coloured dust coat, striped tweed trowsers, and vest. These six men returned for trial on 5th August. Any information regarding them, including previous convictions, to be addressed to District Inspector at Ennis. Ennis, August 7, 1887. Description ol EUGENE MOYNIHAN, native of Lacabawn, who stands charged with having, on the 4th September, 1887, in the barony of West Muskerry, parish of Inchigeela, assaulted Peter Cronin on the head with a stone, thereby endangering his life:— Gray or blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 23 years of age, fair hair; wore a brown hard hat, light brown coat, light gray trowsers and vest; is a farmer's son. Description of THOMAS O'NEILL, native of Drogheda, who stands charged with having, on the 14th August, 1887, in the barony of West Offaley, • parish of Ballyshannon, stolen a quantity of wearing apparel:— Arms bronzedT to above elbows, result of being fireman on board steamers, slight cast in one eye, square shoulders, wore moustache and slight side whiskers in front of ears, dark eyes, regular no3e, dark complexion, rather thin face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 26 years of age, dark hair; wore a jerry hat, white moleskin jacket, old gray tweed trowsers, no vest, and strong nailed boots; is a tramp labonrer ; may be employed as fireman. Description of ROBERT WALSHE ( mother's surname Meade), native of Waterford city, who stands charged with having, on the 18th March, 1886, in the barony of Brawney, parish of Saint Mary's, deserted his wife and four children, which have since been chargeable to the rates of the Tullamore Union : — Pockpitted, blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, broad face, stout make, 5 feet inches high, about 40 years of age, fair hair; wore a dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; journeyman harness maker. Description of JAMES M'KIERNAN ( mother's surname Donegan), native of Drumhalla, who stands charged with having, on the 19th August, 1887, in the barony of Mohill, parish of Cloone, attempted to commit rape on the person of Rose DoyleSlight whiskers under ears, gray eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches fcigh, about 22 years of age, dark hair; wore a soft black hat, black cloth coat, black cord trowsers, black cloth vest; is a farmer's son. Description of PATRICK SHEEHAN, mother's surname FITZGERALD, native of Cloghadoolarty, who stands charged with having, on the 11th day of September, 1887, in the barony of Small County, parish of Fedamore, assaulted and wounded James Kavanagh, by stabbing him in the head with a knife or other sharp instrument, thereby placing his life in danger:— Gray eyes, regular nose, swarthy complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 24 or 25 years of age, dark brown hair ; wore a roitid soft black hat, black frieze coat, dark tweed trowsers, and dark vest; is a labourer. Description of PATRICK CASSIDY, native of Moyheeland, who stands charged with having, on the 6th day of August, 1887, in the barony of Loughin- shollen, parish of Ballinascreen, seriausly stabbed one Peter M'Gurk with a knife, thereby endangering his life:— Large ears, red lips, large hooked nose, fresh complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair; wore a soft hat, gray coat, and white trowsors ; is a labourer. A Warrant tor his arrest ii in the hands of the Royal Irish Constabulary at Draperstown. Magherafelt, August 7, 1887. ( 82999 c— 42219.) Mayo. Description of PATRICK DURKAN, ( mother's surname Fansey), native of Knockfadda, who stands charged witli having, on or about the 31st day of July, 1887, at Knockfadda, in the barony of Gallen, parish of Killasser, seriously assaulted James Fansey, by kicking him in the abdomen, whereby his life is now in imminent danger:— Dark eyes, regular nose, dark oomplexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet high, about 20 years of age, dark hair ; wore a dark tweed coat, corduroy trowsers, and dark tweed vest: is a labourer. May go to England, where he has relatives. Warrant issued for his arrest. Swineford, August 26, 1887. ( 83445 c.— 42893.) Meath. Description of JOHN COLLINS, native of Drogheda, who stands charged with having, on the 10th day of September, 1887, at Beamore, in the barony of Lower Duleek, parish of St. Mary's, stolen two heifers, value £ 10 each, the property of Mrs. M. Matthews, Ballymakenny, county Louth, since re- covered in Salford Market:— Blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 35 years of age; wore a hard hat, tweed coat, dark trowsers and vest ^ is a cattle dealer and farmer. Slane, September, 21, 1887. ( 839 > 7 c— 43716.) Description of a MAN, name and native plase un- known, who stands charged with having, on the 8th September, 1887, in the barony of Ratoath, parish of Dunshaughlin, attempted to unlawfully and carnally know Eliza Kavanagh, a girl under 13 years of age :— Walks with a slight stoop, brown whiskers, turning gray at jaws, shaves chin, but had a few days' growth of beard thereon ; florid complexion, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 50 years of age ; wore a gray tweed coat, trowsers, and plaid vest; appearance of a drover. Warrant in hands of the Police. Dunshaughlin, Sept. 11, 1887 ( 83734 c.— 43339.) Tipperary. Description of LAURENCE DWYER, native of Moandoheragh, who stands charged with having, on tho 12th September, 1887, in the barony of Clan- william, parish of Donohill, seriously assaulted Thomas Breen by striking him on the head with an auger, thereby placing his life in danger :— Dark eyes, thick nose, fresh complexion, full face, stout make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 35 years of age, curly sandy hair, sandy moustache and Imperial; wore a soft black hat, which he wears low down on his eyes, black serge coat, brown tweed trowsers, and vest; is a carpenter. Dundrum, Sept. 15, 1887. ( 83805 c 43462.) JOHN GARVEY, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 18th August, 1887. Waterford. Description of AUGUSTUS E. FITT, native of Limerick, who stands charged with having, on the 13th day of September, 1887, in the barony of Muni- cipal Borough, parish of Trinity Within,' absconded from the Waterford Branch of the Provincial Bank, feloniously taking with him a sum of £ 457 sterling, which he roaeivod in said Bank in his capacity as a Clerk in said branch s— Walks with a military appear- ance, very erectly, hollow in back, turns in his to° s slightly when walking, rather small and well shaped feet, good looking, very pleasing countenance, remark- ably white teeth, shaves all face, wore a dark moustache ; blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 35 years of age, dark hair ; probably wore a black hard hat, brown tweed coat, trowsers and vest, dirk top coat, generally wears a sack made coat; Cashier in Waterford Branch of Provincial Bank. Waterford, Sept 14,1887. ( 83804 c 43461.) of Miss Mary Strangman, of Newtown Upper, and forcibly taken therefrom the sum of £ 14 7s. Ad.: Right leg smaller than left from knee down, scarcely noticeaoie, wears a cork soie about an inch thick inside of right boot, has a slight drag in right leg when walking, anchor on each forearm with the letter H on one arm, speaks with a nice Dublin accent; light gray or blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, hard and pleasing looking face, medium make, about 5 feet 6 inches high, about 25 years of age, dark hair; wore a black hard hat, black serge coat, gray tweed trowsers, and black serge vest; the coat is short, sack made, dark brown moustache, no beard or whiskers; works in different capacities, generally painting. Waterford, Sept 7, 1887. ( 83341 c.— 43189.) Westmeath. Description of TWO MEN, names and native place unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 18th September, 1887, about 1 o'clock, p. m., in the barony of Clonlonon, parish of Ballyloughloe, visited the house of Michael Hindes, of Shurock, put him on his knees, beat him with a stick on the head, fired a shot from a pistol near his face, and threatened him : — 1. Stout make, about 5 feet 9 inches high, about 35 years of age ; wore a gray frieze frock coat and soft black hat. 2. Smaller than No. 1, medium make, about 35 years of age; wore a gray tweed coat, gray trowsers and vest. Moate, September 19, 1887. ( 84018 c.— 43813.) Wicklow. Description of CHRISTOPHER DOOLAN, native of 4, Watery- lane, Old Kilmainham, Dublin, or may be found at Kingstown, where he lived for some time with a cabbage woman, who stands charged with having, on the 5th September, 1887, in the barony of Rathdown, parish of Powerscourt, stolen 3 sovereigns, the property of Margaret Byrne:— Gray or blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, slight make, 5 feet high, about 14 years of age, red sandy hair; wore a two- peaked tweed cap, long black coat, gray tweed trowsers, and dark vest. Warrant issued for his arras t. Bray, September 7, 1897. ( 83630 c.— 43187. Description of CATHERINE DARCY mother's surname Noblett, native of Ballymaghroe, who stands charged with h iving, on or about the 20th August, 1887, in the barony of Ballinacor South, parish of Moyne, stolen the following articles from out of the dwelling- house of Rose Dalton :— One buff skirl, two girls buff jackets, one brown straw hat with aigret in front, one pair of woman's elastic boots ( ne irly new), and the sum of 10s.:— Thick lips, large mouth, awk- ward gait; brown eyes, thick short nose, broad face, stont make, 4 feet 10 inches high, about 17 years of age, dark hair; supposed to be wearing the stolen clothes ; Is believed to have gone to her uncle, William Darcy, a tram- car driver, who resides at Clare Cottage, Beach or strand- road, Sandymount, Dublin. Warrant in hands of Dublin Metropolitan Police. Timohely, August, 25, 18S7. ( 83344 c. 42893.) In the event of his arrest he should under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 112. DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE, Description of HENRY GOODWYNN, alias GOODMAN ( supposed native of Dublin City), who stands charged with having, on the 17th day of August, 1887, in tho barony of St. John's Without, parish of Newtown Upper, broken into the residence G Division. Particulars relative to Convict JOHN SMITH, A. 7 47, convicted at Maryboro,' Queen's County, at tho Summer Assizes, on 9th July, 1883, for stealing, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude:— 66 years of age on conviction, single, carpenter, born at Bally- jamesduff, county Cavan, resided before conviction in Dublin, his friends reside at Bride- street, Dublin ; gray hair, blue eyes, gray eyebrows, regular nose, large mouth, fresh complexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 3 inches high ; left little finger contracted, cut scars on face. This man was released on licence from Mountjoy Prison, on lst August, 1887, and went to reside in Dublin. He notified to the Metropolitan Police on the 24th ult. his intention of going to Carlow, but he has not reported himself at the latter place, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic., cap. 112. ( 97 H. C.) Particulars relative to Convict PATRICK MORRISSY, A 676, convicted at Ros- common Spring Assizes, on 14th March. 1883, for felony of a gun, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude :— 22 years of age on conviction, single is a labourer, born in Moylough, county Galwav, resided before conviction at Moylough, where his friends reside; brown hair, blue eyes, dark brown eyebrows, small nose, medium mouth, fresh complex- ion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 8| inches high. This man was released from Mountjoy Prison, on Licence the 3rd of June, 1887, and went to reside in Dublin. He left his lodgings, 123, Francis- street, without reporting to Police, and his present whereabouts is unknown. Particulars relative to Convict THOMAS HAY- DEN, A 710, convicted at Dublin, at the Recorder's Court, on 31st March, 1883, for larceny, and sentenced to 5 years'penal servitude:— 26 years of age on convic- tion, single, is a draper's assistant; born at Dublin, resided before conviction in Dublin, where his friends reside, Irishtown- road, Dublin; light brown hiar, hazel eyes, fair eyebrows, small nose, small mouth, fair complexion, oval visage, medium make, 5 feet 5J inches high; cut scar left side of face, lost two upper front teeth. This man was released from Mountjoy Prison on licence, 2nd April, 1887, and went to reside at Irish- town- road. He has recently left his residence without reporting to Police, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th sec. of the Act 34 and 35 Vic., cap. 112. ( 91 H. C.) Particulars relative to Convict JAMES MURPHY alias LAWLOR, who is missing from Maryborough Prison, where he was last seen about 5 o'clock, p. m., on the 16th August, 1887; convicted at Recorder's Court, borough of Belfast, on 26th September, 1882, for larceny, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude; is also liable to serve 304 days of a former sentence:— 26 years of age on conviction, can read and write, is a Roman catholic, married, is a carpenter, prison trade carpenter, resided before conviction at Belfast, where his friends reside; brown hair, gray eyes, brown eyebrows, large nose, regular mouth, fresh complexion, oval visage, medium make, 5 feet 5 inches high ; cut scar on top of head; cut mark on little finger left hand; mark on left leg, and two on breast; cut mark on second toe, left foot. NOTICE— A money reward not exceeding £ 5 may be paid to any person who may apprehend and deliver up a convict who shall have effected his escape from a Government prison. Application to be made to the General Prisons Board, Dublin Castle. By Act 19th and 20th Vic., cap. 68, sec. 32, it is provided that any person who shall by any means whatever aid and assist any prisoner to escape, or in attempting to escape, shall be guilty of felony, and being convicted thereof, shall be kept in penal servitude for any term not less than 6 nor more than 8 years. Description of JOHN IVEY, who was recently the Agent at Penrith of the Singer Manufacturing Com- pany, who is charged with misappropriating £ 7 2s. 9d., belonging to the Company:— 33 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fresh complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, lightish brown moustache, no whiskers, proportionate figure, active and square build ; wore a brown check tweed jacket suit; native of the South of England. Before coming to Penrith he was in the same employ- ment at Newcastle- on- Tyne; has been in the army, and also in the Forfar Militia. Warrant issued. Information to SUPERINTENDENT FOWLER, County Police Office, Penrith. Constabulary Office, Penrith, Cumberland, 22nd September, 1887. ( 98 H. C.) newport ( Mon). £ 10 REWARD. Description of TWO MEN, supposed to be foreign- ers ( names unknown), wanted in this borough, charged on warrant with stealing two hundred pounds in notes and gold, by means of a trick, on 12th August, 1887. Native of Florence. Speaks fairly good English. 2nd. About 30 years of age, about 5ft. 7 or 8 inches high, very stout, corpulant, full round face, clear ruddy complexion, very light brown hair— cut short, light brown moustache, no whiskers, and blue eyes, nice appearance, and had a rather rollicking walk. Dressed in navy blue ribbed cloth suit, and black bowler bat, new elastic side boots of small size. Wore a very large mourning ring with cameo stone with raised figure on it, stone of ring large— almost covering the third joint of fourth finger left hand. Is an Italian, but has the appearance of a Norweigan or German, and appeared not to be able to speak English. Ten Pounds reward will be given on apprehension and conviction of tho above men. Please inquire at Banks, & o., for the notes. Police Officers are requested to make all possible search and enquiry for the above men at Hotels, Shipping Offices, Boarding Houses, Private Lodging Houses, Outgoing Vessels, & c., & c., and if found arrest and communicate with A. Wanted here for theft of £ 886, consisting of £ 500 in £ 1 notes, British Linen Company's bank; £ 85 in £ 5 notes, other banks; £ 271 in £ 1 notes, various banks, and £ 30 in £ 5 notes, Bank of England, from the British Linen Company's Bank, Charing- cross, on 25th inst.:— Ist. A man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark brown whiskers, cut short, and heavy dark moustache; dressed in a dark tweed suit and round felt black hat. 2nd. About same age and height, dressed in a brown tweed suit, and black felt hat. 3rd. A man about 40 years of age, tall and stout made, round full face, no whiskers, heavy dark brown moustacho; dressed in dark tweed coat and vest, light- coloured trowsers and black felt hat. 4th. A man from 35 to 40 years of age, short and stout, dark brown whiskers and moustache; dressed in a dark tweed suit, and black ( thinks soft) felt hat. All spoke with slight foreign accent ( thinks German) j and one of them carried a small leather bag. While three of the men kept the bank teller and clerk in conversation, at front of the counter, the fourth man went round behind the teller, into his box, and lifted the bundle of notes— the door of the box being left open. The above Reward is offered by the Bank Directors to any person or persons who will give such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the Thieves. The persons after described were convicted before the Sheriff Court, Perth, on 11th August, 1887, on a chargo of killing grouse out of season, and were each sentenced to pay a fine of £ 33 within ten days, or suffer 88 days imprisonment. As none of the parties have paid their fines, a SherrifFs Warrant has now been issued for their apprehension :— 1. . JOHN FARQUHARSON, labourer, gunsmith, or poacher, aged 49 years, looks older, 5 feet 9 inches in height, native ol Glenisla, Forfarshire, gray hair and moustache ( almost white), shaved on cheeks, but may allow his beard to grow, fresh complexion and stout make. A famous Blairgowrie Volunteer Rifle shot, and notorious grouse poacher, well known in East Perthshire and I' orfarshire. 2. ROBERT JOHN STEWART, labourer or gamekeeper, aged 28 years, 5 feet 9 inches in height, slender make, fresh complexion, brown hair, fair moustache and small side whiskers, born at Penrith, Cumberland, but brought up in Glenshee, Perthshire ; up till recently was employed as a Gamekeeper in Essex, where he spent the past three or four years. 3. ALEXANDER MACDONALD BEATON, a mason, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches in height, ordinary make, dark hair and moustache, swarthy complexion, a native of Strathardle, Perthshire, but has spent a good part of his time in Dundee. The police are requested to search for and apprehend the accused, or any of them, and, failing payment of the fines or fine, convey direct to Perth, or wire to the subscriber, who will immediately send for them.
