" Have I been so long time with you and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip 1" was our Lord's question. " Show me now Thy way, that I may know Thee" was the prayer of Moses. The intellect desiring truth is a proof that tlieie is truth. The heart desiring love is a proof that there is love. If we have any desire to know God, it is a proof that that knowledge is attainable. Let us see some of the conditions from the experience of Moses in Exod. xxxiii., where we find his prayer. First, we find him desiring, not the blessing but the blesser, not the gift but the giver, " That I may know Thee." Next, he stood on the right ground—" If I have found grace in Thy sight," it is_ all of grace, no meriting, or winning, or putting ourselves into right doing or right thinking, all will be of " the grace of God." And next, he looked for thei answer from the right quarter—" Shew me." Perhaps some of our children are ^ uick, see things at once ; and one of tliera is slower of intellect and says, " I don't see it, father,' are we not patient, and show him how or what it is ? We are slow scholars, perhaps a cloud may take Moses and Elijah— our teachers— away, and Jesus only remains ; but is He not enough ? He has infinite patience. And next, we find Moses had a good motive, and when we ask God to bless us, what do we mean ? Why do we wish for it ? That we may be on the same level as those we know? That, having had an up and down miserable kind of experience, we think we should be more comfortable ? He may meet us on our low motives ; but let us seek a higher. Moses desired it for the good of the people, that was higher, but the highest is, " Show me, for Thy glory's sake." Lastly, Moses was in the right attitude. He came to be taught and shown, as God appointed ; he came alone ; he came early ; he stood on a rock ; he was hidden himself ; he carried two tables of stone for God to write on. Are we obedient, plastic 1 ready to be anything or nothing ? to be anywhere? and if not willing, are we willing to be made willing?
