Perhaps no saying of our Lord Jesus Christ's is more familiar than " Come unto Me all ye that are weary and hea\ y laden, and I will give you rest" He adds, Learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find i- est." To His disciples He said, " Come apart and rest awhile.'' He knows and meets the great need of human hearts ; but it was no new thought to Him in His Gospel dispensa- tion. We do not even turn over the first leaf of our Bibles before we lind mention of His own seventh- day rest. And again and again, through the first books of Moses, do we find His commandments about rest, and His allusions to it, and the blessing and refreshing associated with His Sabbath provision. The seventh day, the seventh month, the seventh year, and then most specially the seven times seven years, the Jubilee time. How many of the millions to whom that word has been a household word lately, incessantly repeated, have realised that a Jubilee was a Divinely ordered institution? God first thought of it, appointed if, surrounded it by marked and special favours. In Lev. xxv. we find the origin and the details They apply in the first instance to His people, the Jews, in connection with Hi. s land, Canaan ; but do they not apply spiritually now to each one of His redeem? d people in connection with His inheritance in Christ Jesus. The atonement was the keynote to the first sound of Jubilee rejoicing ( verse 9], and that once recogniscd, quickly follow promises and provisions for ( 1) Liberty ( verse 10) : " If the Son snail make you free, ye shall be free indeed." ( 2) Restored possession ( verse 13) : ' Until Christ be formed in you," that " image of God " lost at the fall. ( 3) Safety ( vtrse 18): " They shall never perish." ( 4) Plenty ( verse 19): " All things are yours." " He satisfieth." Let this Jubilee time remind us of these things, of His thoughts concerning us, of His gifts, and as we receive out of His fulness, we shall enter into that rest, we shall " sit down under His shadow with great delight," and find " His banner over us is love."
