SPECIAL NOTICE. It will greatly facilitate the transaction of business, if in all telegrams to Great Scotland Yard regarding criminal matters, the name and official designation of the tender are telegraphed. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Rambling along the coast of the Isle of Man a young man came to a spot where the ground sloped at a steep angle, and then terminated abruptly in a series of perpendicular rocks rising more than 300 feet above the sea. The ground was covered with short, fine grass, rendering it exceedingly slippery for walking. The young man carelessly rambled on, scarcely conscious of his perilous position, when suddenly losing his presence of mind, he sat down to recover himself. To his horror he found himself gradually slipping down the incline. Every effort to stop himself was fruitless. Destruction seemed inevitable. Words cannot describe the agony of his mind. Within a foot of the terrible brink there grew a little solitary tuft of grass. Against this he placed his foot. It arrested him in his descent. In this position he remained for a few moments, praying earnestly. Becoming calmer, he gently unloosed his boots, and with the utmost caution he was enabled to take first one boot off and then the other, thus obtaining a firmer footing ; and turning round slowly ascended until he reached the top. In this illustration, which is an actual fact we have the picture of a careless one's position- sliding down the incline ot life, each second bringing him nearer and nearer to Eternity's awful W b. e, y° ur position But listen !
