SPECIAL NOTICE. M El ROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. £ 200 REWARD. 1.— Central Office.— Woodcut portrait and description of WILLIAM EDWARD BAILDEN, alias ARTHUR X OSTER, WALTER NICROLLS, It will greatly facilitate the transaction of business, if in all telegrams to Great Scotland Yard regarding criminal matters, the name and official designation of the sender are telegraphed, FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Offioe to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. When all around was life, God spoke of death.— Gen. iii. 3. Now, on the contrary, when all around is death, God speaks of life. Then the word was, " In the day thou eatest thou shall die ;" now the word is, " Believe and live." And as in Eden, the enemy sought to make void God's testimony as to the result of eating the fruit, so now he seeks to make void God's testimony as to the result of believing the Gospel The serpent said, " Ye shall not surely die." And now, when God's word plainly declares that '• he that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life," the same serpent seeks to persuade people that they have not everlasting life, nor should they pre- sume to think of such a thing until they have first done, felt, and experienced all manner of things. Let me beseech you to allow the voice of the Lord to prevail above the hiss of the serpent. Unbelief is the devil's darling sin in which he nestles; whatever shape it assumes it is sure to undervalue the blood of Jesus. When we tamper with unbelief, we ourselves put up the shutters that hide God from us. In Him is no darkness at all. Only once in eternity did He hide His face from earth in darkness— it was when Jesus died. When He created man out of the dust of the ground, it was power; when He came to seek man in his lost estate, it was grace. But who can utter all that is wrapped up in the idea of God as a seeker? God seeking a sinner ! What could the Blessed One have seen in man to lead Him to seek for him ? Just what the Shepherd saw in the lost sheep, or what the woman saw in the lost piece of silver. The sinner is valuable to God ; but why he should be so eternity alone will unfold. THE POLICE WATCH. AS SUPPLIED TO NEARLY EVERY FORGE IR THE UNITED KINGDOM. Bake at once, thoroughly, in a quick oven. TO MAKE A GOOD PLAIN CAKE. — Mix well together one pound of flour, two full teaspoonfuls of Borwick's Gold Medal Baking Powder, a little salt and spice, and a quarter of a pound of sugar, rub in a quarter of a pound of butter, add six ounces of sultanas, two ounces of currants, and one ounce of candied peel; moisten the whole with two eggs, and half a teacupful of milk, previously beaten together. Bake in a quick oven very thoroughly. SHOUT BREAD.— Mix well together one pound and a quarter of flour, a large teaspoonful of Borwick's Gold Medal Baking Powder, and half a pound of white sifted sugar, rub in half a pound of butter, mix the whole with three eggs, previously well beaten, • and a little essence of lemon. Make four cakes out of five ounces of dough, mould into a round form, then roll them out into an oval shape, pinch them round the edges, put a piece of candied lemon peel at the top, and bake slowly. SCOTCH SCONES— Take one pound of flour, add a full teaspoonful of Borwick's Gold Medal Baking Powder, and a little salt, mix thoroughly while dry, rub in two ounces of butter, beat up one egg well in a quarter of a pint of milk or water, then thoroughly and quickly mix together; bake immediately on a girdle or in a quick oven. This will make eight delicious scones. NORFOLK DUMPLINGS.— Prepare the dough as for bread, put into a saucepan of boiling water immediately, and boil twenty minutes without taking the lid off. TEA CAKES.— Use the recipe as for scones, but add a few currants, sultanas, or caraways if preferred. AN EXCELLENT CHRISTMAS PLUM PUDDING.— Take three- quarters of a pound of flour, two large teaspoonfuls of Borwick's Gold Medal Baking Powder, two ounces of bread crumbs, one and a- half pounds of suet, two pounds of raisins, one pound of currants, ten ounces of sugar, two ounces of almonds, one pound of mixed candied peel, salt and spice to taste, mix ingredients well together, and add six eggs well beaten, and three- quarters of a pint of milk. Divide in two, and boil eight hours. PANCAKES OR BATTER PUDDING. — Take half a pound of flour, two teaspoonfuls of Borwick's Gold Medal Baking Powder, and a little salt; mix well in a dry state, add one egg and three- quarters of a pint of milk. TO MAKE BREAD.— To every pound of flour add a heaped- up teaspoonful of Borwick's Gold Medal Baking Powder, with a little salt, and thoroughly mix while in a dry state, then pour on gradually about half a pint of cold water, or milk and water, mixing quickly but thoroughly into a dough of the usual consistence, taking care not to knead it more than is necessary to mix it perfectly. Make it into small loaves,, which must be immediately put into a quick oven. SUET, AND OTHER FLOUR PUDDINGS should never be made without it. A good teaspoonful to a pound of flour makes them both light and digestible, and effects a great saving in eggs and butter. PUFF PASTE.— Mix one pound of flour with a tea- spoonful of Borwick's Gold Medal Baking Powder, then cut half a pound of butter into slices, roll it in thin sheets on some of your flour, wet up the rest with about a quarter of a pint of water, see that it is about as stiff as your butter, roll it to a thin sheet, cover it with your sheets of butter, double it in a three double; do the same five times, it is then fit for use, or it may stand an hour covered over to keep the air from it.
