GAZETTE. PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. New Sf. eies. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1886. Vol. III., No. 302. REGULATIONS- 1. AH announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GIIEAT SCOTLAND YAHD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of xtolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analagous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the tummmemn » i( for insertion in lie next issue. 10. In all eases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any anno. MCcment, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clcarly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Lriunmond § Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on appli- cation in the form set forth in my circular of the 7tn of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any complaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once noti- fied to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT/ £ 200 REWARD. 1.— Central Office.— Woodcut portrait and description of WILLIAM EDWARD BAILDEN, alias ARTHUR iOSTER, WALTER NICHOLLS, It will greatly facilitate the transaction of business, if in all telegrams to Great Scotland Yard regarding criminal matters, the name and official designation of the sender are telegraphed. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies, WILLIAM CRAWLEY, and FRANK FALKLAND, License Holder, Office No. C 1391, whose apprehension is sought for forgery, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion sallow, hair, whiskers, moustache, and beard ( thin) dark brown, eyes hazel, retreating forehead, thin legs, slightly weak- kneed, prominent nose, long thin face. Was employed as a shorthand clerk to a solicitor in Birmingham. Has a brother at Keymers, No. 1, East Temple Chambers, Whitefriars, and his mother resides at 123, Southampton- street, Camber- well. Has converted £ 5,200, proceeds of forgery, into gold, and may endeavour to obtain letters of credit, or change gold into bank notes, foreign money, & c. Was convicted at Liverpool Assizes, 6th December, 1876, and sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude in the name of FRANK FALKLAND. Will endeavour to go abroad. Has friends in Calcutta. The above reward will be paid by Messrs. White and Sons, solicitors, 11, Bedford- row, London, to any per- son giving such information as shall lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the above and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. 2.— Central Office.— For conspiracy and fraud at Southampton - ARTHUR GOLDING KNIGHT, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout, complexion fair, clean shaved ; dress, light tweed suit, black hard felt hat; respectable appearance. His practice is to advertise for a loan for a short period, offering good security and exceptionally good interest. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. W.; or to Head Constable Breary, Southampton. 3.— Central office.— Woodcut portrait and de- scription of EDWIN M. CLARKE, alias W. H. ELLIS, J. R. TAYLOR, and J. W. WILLIAMS, whose appre- hension is sought at Pocklington, Yorkshire, for at- tempting to obtain charitable contributions by fraud ; age 41, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight, complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, moustache light; dress, shabby gen- teel ; frequents common lodging- houses. Previously convicted. Warrant issued. 4.— E Division.— For embezzling £ 57, 27th ult. — HENRY FRASER, age 20, height 5 ft. 4i in., com- plexion ruddy, hair reddish, eyes grey, speaks slowly ; dress, grey tweed jacket and vest, dark mixture trou- sers, black felt hat. A porter ; native of London. Is supposed to have gone to Liverpool, to take passage for Canada. Warrant issued. 5.— G Division.— For fraud — SAMUEL WIL- LIAM LIVERSEDGE, alias HENRY KNIGHT, Expiree, Offic* 22493, a^ e 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light; dress, black clothes, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 6.— N Divisjon.— For stealing, a j- plate silver Geneva watch, No. 18341 ; 1 gold signet ring; 1 meer- schaum pipe, and, ill 10s. gold and silver. 3rd inst., — ALFRED PEARCE, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair red, moustache and side whiskers ( slight) sandy ; dress, black overcoat, black diagonal under ditto and vest, brown tweed trousers, hard felt hat. A baker; native of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, where his mother resides. His grandfather, a baker, lives at No. 6, Albert street, and his uncle, Thomas Pearce, is a well- known cricketer there. 7.— T Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of ERNEST ST. JOHN LIMPUS, alias ARTHUR MORLAND, VERNON, FREEMAN, dec, whose ap- prehension is sought for obtaining j£ 180 by falsely stating he was about to receive a legacy of .£ 500 from Messrs. Yarde and Loader, solicitors, Gray's Inn, age 21, height 6 ft. 1 in., slight, complexion very fair, hair curly, walks erect, plausible manner, and of gentle- manly appearance. Is said to be travelling from place to place, obtaining food and lodgings by false pre- tences. A native of Twickenham. 4 Not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. 8.— W Division.— For failing to surrender to his bail at Surrey Sessions, for larceny — HUBERT BAKER, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey ; dress, black diagonal cutaway coat, trousers, and vest, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A native of Clearwell, Coleford, Forest of Dean. Has a brother at work in the stone and slate quarries, Rhym- ney Valley. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 9.— For fraud— R. STREET, a Commission Agent, late of 69, Mark- lane, E. C., age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., square build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light; dress, dark suit, brown felt hat. Absconded 28th ult. Warrant issued. 10.— For embezzlement- HENRY CODRINGTON, a clerk, late of Lome House, Shepperton- road, New North- road, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, very heavy eyebrows, which meet; dress, blue serge suit, black felt hat. Has with him a brown Gladstone bag. His father resides at Sneed's Farm, Stoke Bishop, Clifton Down, near Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. ANGLESEY. 11.— Holyhead ( County).— For obtaining goods by false pretences— JOHN JONES, age about 30, height 6 ft., slight, complexion pale, hair dark, mark on side of neck; dressed as a clergyman. Was formerly curate at Northop, Flintshire. A native of Llan- dyrnog, near Denbigh. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Davies, Holyhead. ANTRIM. ~~ 12.— Belfast ( Toivn).— For stealing, 30th Septem- ber last, a registered letter containing a £ 50 note, No. 4- R 83514, and a £ 20 note, No. 63931— RICHARD McCRACKEN, alias GEORGE STEWART, a tele- graph messenger, age about 19 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight, complexion fair, eyes grey, oval face, long nose, large ears and mouth, bad teeth ( several deficient in upper jaw). Is supposed to have left for Liverpool 30th September, whence it has been ascertained he left for London on 2nd October. Warrant issued. Information to the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary Office, Dublin Castle. BANFFSHIRE. 13.— Banff ( County).— WILLIAM PARK, Case No. 9, 24th September last, not yet apprehended. Information to Chief Constable Haig, Banff. BERKSHIRE. 14.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 6 4s. by means of a fictitious cheque on the Union Bank of London, Limited, Chancery- lane Branch, purporting to be drawn by Alfred Edward Watts, 15th inst.— H. TEMPLE, 1, Park Hill, Richmond, Surrey ( false), age 24 to 27, height 5 ft. 6 to 8 in., complexion ( sunburnt) fair, hair and moustache light, frowning expression ; dress, green melton covert coat, brown tweed trousers, salmon- colour neckerchief, black felt hat. Stated he was a nephew of Sir R. Temple, Bart. Supposed known at Staines, Twickenham, and the Wanderers' Club, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hayes, Windsor. CARDIGANSHIRE. 15. — Aberystwith ( County). - Escaped from custody, after being sentenced to 3 months' imprison- THE POLICE GAZETTE. ment for larceny- RICHARD JONES, alias DICK LLANDILOES, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, moustache slight, round full face, prominent nose, military appearance ; dress, brown tweed monkey jacket, trousers, and vest ( old), lace boots, black soft felt hat. May be accompanied by his wife, tall, and deeply pockpitted, and a boy, age about 4 years. Travels the Welsh counties mending umbrellas, & c. A native of Llanidloes, Montgomery- shire. CHESHIRE. 16.— Nantwich ( County).— For obtaining money by means of a fictitious cheque on the Staffordshire Joint Stock Bank ( Limited), Wolverhampton, signed M. Edwards and endorsed J. Johnson, 24, Late- lane, Bilston- road, Wolverhampton ( false)— MANASSEH ROBINSON EDWARDS, alias J. JOHNSON, in- surance agent, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight, com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, narrow face, hair meets between eyes, scar from abscess left jaw, Roman nose, wound mark small of back. A native of Nether- ton, Worcestershire; lately resided at Swan Villa, near Tipton, Staffordshire. May be accompanied by his wife and three children. Was convicted at Wor- cestershire City Sessions, 9th April, 1885, for em- bezzlement, a « d sentenced to 4 months'imprisonment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Leah, Nantwich. 17.— Northwich ( County).— For indecent assault, at Netherton- Frodsham, 26th ult.— JOHN CHA- LONER, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, stoops slightly when walking ; " dress, black cloth coat, trousers, and vest, white collar, black necktie, hard felt hat. A native of Netherton- Frodsham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Naylor, Oakmere, Northwich. 18.— Macclesfield ( Borough).— For stealing, 8th inst., 6 pairs women's side- spring boots, rivetted, kid tops, patent toecaps; 2 pairs women's boots, cloth tops, lace up at sides, patent fronts, square toes, black soles, hand sewn, very old fashioned; 6 pairs men's strong lace boots, rivetted, heavy nailed, toecaps, tips on heels ; 2 pairs men's light lace boots, rivetted— all new— ALFRED JARVIS, alias SHAW, a saddler ( collar maker), age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight, aomplexion pale, hair light, whiskers ( slight) and moustache inclined to sandy, thin face.— THOMAS HORTH or HOWORTH, a tinplate worker, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout, complexion sallow, hair and side whiskers brown, round face, rather bow- legged. Has two children living with his mother at Stoke- on- Trent, Staffordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Sheasby, Maccles- field. 19.— Stockport ( Borough).— For stealing, during the last 3 weeks, 1 black, white and mauve broken plaid woollen shawl; 1 black, white, amber and red ditto; 1 black stuff shawl, with black silk fringe; 1 black stuff skirt, with mauve stripe ; 1 mauve knitted muffler, black stripe across each end ; 1 white skirt, with 7 or 8 small tucks, and 1 old neckerchief— A woman, who gave the name of ANNIE, age about 35, low set, very heavy dark fringe on forehead, of good address ; very shabbily dressed. Left 12th inst. Information to Lieut.- Colonel Staples, Chief Con- stable, Stockport. DENBIGHSHIRE. 20.— Wrexham ( County).— For stealing from a hotel at Llangollen, 21st ult., a navy blue sateen skirt ( kilted); 1 navy blue bodice and drapery, with small cream spots; 1 rich broche silk raised jacket, box- pleated at back, tight- fitting, double- breasted, with ornaments from plaits, plain sateen buttons ; and a pair of lady's plain leather button boots— EMILY GREENWOOD, age about 23, rather tall, complexion pale, hair light; dress, black jacket, brown dress, high crowned straw hat. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham. DERBYSHIRE. 21.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— License Holder GEORGE KEMP, alias ROBERT GILDALE, Office No. 31596, age 43, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, scars forehead, right eyebrow, and 1st right finger, 4th finger bent, birth stain inside right knee, part bracelet left wrist, flat feet. Sen- tenced at Nottingham, 5th January, 1880, to 7 years' penal servitude and 5 years' supervision for larceny. Licensed 13th October, 1886. A G 813. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 22.— Exeter ( City).— For stealing, 25th ult., 1 dark TUESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1886. silkumbrella, 1 short buff colour overcoat, bone buttons, two side pockets, one outside and inside breast, and ticket ditto; 1 black diagonal frock coat, 2 pairs trousers ( one grey plaid, the other brown with blue stripes)— HARRY WREN ( supposed false), age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair, and moustache ( slight) dark, very high forehead, long features ; dress, dark monkey jacket, grey trousers, stand- up collar, black bowler hat. This man takes lodgings for a few days, and sud- denly decamps, after committing a larceny. Is also wanted at Weston- super- Mare and at Taunton for similar offences. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Exeter 23.— Devonport ( Borough).— For fraud— HENRY FISHER, alias MARCH ANT, ageabout60, height 5 ft 10 in., stout, complexion fresh, hair and whiskers turn- ing grey, chin shaved ; dress, black suit ( coat long and buttoned up to chin), silk hat, carried an umbrella. Stated he was the superintendent of an insurance agency, and also a book canvasser; has with him a Revised copy of the Bible. About 10 years ago he travelled for Blackie and Co., publishers, in the name of Marchant. Supposed to have recently been liber- ated from prison. Warrant issued. 24. — Devonport ( Borough).— For failing to pay a fine of £ 25, for selling beer without a licence, or in default sentenced to 3 months' imprison- ment- JOHN BROWN WAKEHAM, alias ATKIN- SON, the keeper of a bogus club, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 in, complexion pale, hair dark, small side whiskers and moustache, smart appearance and of good address ; dress, dark grey frieze overcoat, brown tweed suit, black hard felt hat. Is said to be well known in Bristol and South Wales. Information to Head Constable Lynn, Devonport. FLINTSHIRE. 25.— Mold ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences - CHARLES CAMPBELL GAUDEN ( supposed false), age 35, height 5 ft 6in., complexion fair, moustache slight; dress, dark cloth jacket and vest, dark check trousers, stand up collar, sidespring boots ( old), brown hard felt hat. A bricklayer ; native of Aberystwith, Cardiganshire. Stated he was a gentleman's son, and recently returned from New Orleans. ( See Case No. 44.) Warrant issued. 26.— Mold ( County).— For housebreaking at Four Crosses, Cilcen, 10th inst., and stealing a silver English lever watch, No. 39145— TWO TRAMPS : 1st, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., whiskers sandy; dress, pepper- and- salt jacket and trousers shoes ( old), light cloth cap ; a travelling cornet player. 2nd, age about 32, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., whiskers dark ; dress, dark coat, light trousers, dark soft felt hat. 27.— Mold ( County). — For larceny — WILLIAM JONES, alias WILL FISH, age about 50, height 5 ft- 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair ( turning grey) and tuft on chin black, sunken cheeks, stoops slightly; dress, black jacket and cap, dark trousers, frequently wears moleskin clothes. A rag gatherer and umbrella mender ; is well known to marine store dealers, & c., throughout North Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Bolton Mold. __ GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 28.— Northleach ( County).— For failing to appear to a summons at Stow- on- the- Wold, 4th, for keeping a brothel— ANN HYDE, alias SHELTON, age about 50, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, left hand crippled ; dress, dark jacket, dress, and bonnet. Supposed gone to Bristol or War- wick, where she has friends residing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Basson, Northleach. HAMPSHIRE. 29— Gosport ( County).— For stealing a silver verge watch, No. 61379, and £ 11 gold, silver, and bronze— JOHN DUFFY, age 29, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brewn, moustache dark eyes grey, ship tattooed on chest, tombstone, " In memory of my father," and woman right arm, woman left, bracelet both wrists, ring middle both hands; dress, supposed dark cord suit, sidespring boots, round hard felt hat. A native of Abbuill, Tipperary, Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Catchlove, Gosport. 30— Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 14th inst., a lady's small open- face watch, No. 80436, makers " Kendal and Dent, Cheapside"; 1 silver twisted chain, Prince of Wales pattern, with sixpenny piece and 2 threepenny pieces attached; 1 round silver brooch, " Jenny " across centre ; 1 blue silk handker- chief, and 3s. 6d.— A MAN, age about 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, clean shaved, appearance of a groom or stableman ; dress FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1886. Ware ( County).— Escaped from custody, at 5.30 p. m., 15th inst., whilst under remand for burglary — SAMUEL WILSON, age 49, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey), thick short moustache, whiskers and beard ( about a fortnight's growth) dark, eyes grey, full forehead ; dress, brown cardigan jacket, dark blue trousers and vest, blue flannel drawers and undershirt, check Oxford shirt. A native of Lincolnshire. Information to Supt. Hilton, Ware. KENT, 32.— Tunbridge Wells ( County).— For stealing £ 1 gold— BESSIE GREEN, age 13, tall and stout for her age, complexion fair, hair ( tied in knot behind) light brown, eyes brown, rather low forehead ; dress, grey linsey dress, fur tippet, lace boots, blue Tam- o'- Shanter hat. A native of Tunbridge Wells. Absconded 13th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Embery, Tunbridge Wells. LANCASHIRE. 33.— Bury ( County).— Escaped from custody at Salford Railway Station, 9th inst., charged with lar- ceny— WILLIAM WILSON, WMW] ALBERT HARRI- SON and WILLIAM JONES, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, mole right cheek ; dress, dark ribbed coat, brown broad cord trousers, white silk scarf, lace boots, black felt hat. Was convicted at Strangeways, Manchester, in Febru- ary, 1883, and sentenced to 2 months' imprisonment for larceny ; at Dukinfield in May, 1884, and sen- tenced to 1 month's imprisonment for larceny— both in the name of ALBERT HARRISON ; and at Man- chester Assizes in February, 1886, and sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment for larceny in name of WILLIAM JONES. Has also been convicted at Congleton as a reputed thief. Information to Supt. Henderson, Bury. 34.— Ormskirk ( County).— For obtaining a silver English lever single case watch, No. 40065, maker, " S. Jackson, Manchester," very bright hands, from a rail- way signalman at Gore House, on the Cheshire Railway, and 5s. at Skelmersdale 2nd inst., by representing him- self as a foreman in the signal department— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, short dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dress, grey mix- ture coat and vest, dark corduroy trousers, small check shirt front, blue tie, lace boots, black hard felt hat with flat top, carried a long dark overcoat. In the first instance he called at the signalman's box, told him he was examining the locks of the signals, and after some conversation asked him to lend him his watch, as he wanted to watch the 2.21 train, but failed to return it. In the second instance he took lodgings, stating he was a foreman in the signal department, but being short of money asked for 5s. to enable him to treat his comrades and remove his box from the station. It is requested that railway men may be cautioned against the proceedings of this man, and requested, in the event of his calling upon them, to give immediate information to police. ( See Case No. 36.) 35.— O r m s k i r k ( County). — For obtaining at Downholland, 26th ult., a gold lever watch, number and maker's name unknown— A MAN, age about 35) height 5 ft. 9 in., slight, complexion dark, clean shaved, smart appearance ; dress, black suit, side- spring boots, black hard felt hat; carried a black bag containing watchmakers' tools. His modus operandi is to call at houses and inquire if any of the inmates have a watch that requires re- pairing ; if so, he repairs it, and then says he will call on the following day and see if it is going all right. He does so, and finds that the watch has stopped; tells the owner that he will take it to his shop and have it thoroughly repaired, but fails to return it. Information to Supt. Is known at Manchester ( where his wife is supposed to reside), at Worsley, and at Liverpool. Is supposed to have been at one time a travelling draper, and previous to entering the North Eastern Railway service in 1874 was a police inspector on the North British Railway at Glasgow. This man has been lecturing in Lancashire since the latter part of September, and obtaining subscriptions and donations towards a fund he was raising to assist him to enter college and educate himself for the pur- pose of translating the Scriptures into the Mandingo language. He also states he had been a missionary in that country for the past two years, but this is known to be untrue, as he was in custody at Glasgow in the name of Principal Nero in February last, for fraud.
