" If any man thirst, let him come unto me." How earnestly I long that some who read these lines may be amongst these thirsty ones ! You little dream how near to you is the One who is not only able but yearning to fill your soul with unspeakable gladness ! Are you groaning beneath a burden from which He can give you instant deliverance ? Are you toil- ing to earn a blessing, while He is offering it to you as] a gift 1 Are you groping to find some roundabout path to the kingdom, when one step of faith will place you at once within its blessed privileges 1 Some one, in graphic, military language, has summed it all up in three short words : " Halt! right- about face ! quick march !" and the hardest command is the first, " Halt!" Let there be an end of your own toiling— your own working— your own earning ; be satisfied with what Christ has done. He took your place— was made sin for you— suffered in your stead— discharged your debt; ana having endured all your curse and punishment, there is no wrath, no condemnation for you, if only you will trust Him as your substitute and Saviour. Does it seem to you too great a venture to trust Jesus, to take Him at His word 1 Are there not some who will at once give their trust and say, " Jesus, I will trust Thee, trust Thee with my soul. Guilty, lost, and helpless, Thou canst make me whole. There is none in heaven or on earth but Thee. Thou hast died for sinners ; therefore, Lord, for me." Do you see how we are shut up to one of two conditions, either to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, or to not believe 1 And when eternal life and salvation are the portion of each one who so trusts Jesus, will you not at once decide that you will claim Him as your Saviour 1 Go to God's word, ask for His teaching of the Holy Spirit, and that you may be willing to receive salvation on God's terms, just as His free gift. And I am sure the clouds will break, and the light of His love will chase away all fears. " He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life ; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on Him."
