All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as 10 stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of ttolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense ff engraving on wood. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, ' city, or borough, as the case may be. V. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or annlagous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen properly bear a numfer, and an alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted it the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit ie the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in ihe next issue. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be 10. wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mus- ic clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by ,-. covering letter. 12. All payments must he in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by chequc, crossed " Drummond $ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James TTilling, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. MYSTERIOUS ILLNESSES THERE are in this World many mysterious things: mysterious appearances and mys- terious disappearances, if one is to credit the reports of Spiritualists on the one hand, and the Police Notices on the other. These mysteries, however, are of very occasional occurrence, and do not affect generally domestic life. Not so the mysterious illnesses, which were recently the subject of correspondence in THE TIMES, and are too frequently the source of anxiety in the household. Sanitary science has put the heads of households on the qui vive for defective drainage and impure water supply, as the sources of many 4 4 mys- terious illnesses;" and the study of the Chemistry of Food has revealed others. The Professors of Chemistry have not thought it beneath their dignity to analyse the articles of our daily food, and the recent discoveries of an American Chemist have brought to light a subtle poison in cheese when in a certain condition of decay. There is one source, how- ever, which does not appear to have been touched upon, and that is the use of the cheap baking powders sold in bulk, Some of these contain enormous quantities of alum, a material which costs less than a penny a pound, and saves the employment of more costly materials, A cheap baking powder is frequently made by mixing fib. of alum, J lb. carbonate of soda, and 1 lb. flour or ground rice. This poisonous mixture costs Jd. per lb., and hence can be retailed in \ lb, packets or parcels at Id. each, and can even be put up in 1 lb, fancy boxes to tempt the purchaser, with considerable profit to the manufacturer. Now, alum will undoubtedly raise the bread, and even impart to it a tempting whiteness ; but it will also cause ulceration of the bowels, chronic dyspepsia, and stomach complaints, 1' • ' ' 4 • . which are frequently found amongst those 44 mysterious illnesses" which afflict the members of certain families, and puzzle the family doctor to assign to them their proper cause. Much light might be thrown upon the subject if every doctor having patients . suffering from such disorders would make an enquiry as to how the family bread and pastry is made, and what baking powder is used in its making, But the best way of avoiding the evil is to purchase only the baking powder sold in packets and patent boxes bearing the well- known name of BORWICK, whose reputation is the surest % guarantee against adulteration, So long as B* false economy leads householders to purchase so- called 44 cheap" articles, of makers of whom they know nothing, articles which may contain all kinds of injurious ingredients, we shall have complaints of 44 mysterious illnesses," for no course of treatment will give relief whilst the source of the disease is to be found in our daily food. An evidence of the soundness of the policy of buying only the best, may be seen in the fact that Borwick's powder has found its way into the Royal Household, where the Queen's private baker regularly uses it, and into the Palace of the Queen of the Nether- lands. It is also used in the Army and Navy, and in the Royal Hospitals and large Insti- tutions under medical superintendence. These facts account for Borwick's powder having obtained Five Gold Medals, and for its having by far the largest sale of any baking powder in the world, It is used as generally in the hut of the squatter in Australia and the tent of the soldier on foreign service, as it is in the British household, and there is scarcely a corner of the globe where the name of " BORWICK" is not 4< a household word."
