REGTRLATIONS- L All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. . ... 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of tM POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, anl the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15J. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any annoiMeement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They musl be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond $ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAXETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. MURDER. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 1.— BAKNSLEY fCounty^.— Woodcut portrait and des- It will greatly facilitate the transaction of business, if in all telegrams to Great Scotland Yard regarding criminal matters, the name and official designation of the sender are telegraphed. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was eought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if • there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is - circulated in the Colonies cription of JAMES MURPHY, whose apprehension is sought for the wilful murder of a Police Constable at Dodworth, 31st ult. Age 43, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, several scars top of head, mole right cheek, coal marks right wrist and back of both hands, small scar top of left wrist; dress, dark mixture cloth coat, sleeved waistcoat with moleskin back and Windsor cord front, white bone buttons; mole skin trousers, clogs ( old), brown cap with peak. Is a notorious poacher, and has served five years' penal ser- vitude for housebreaking. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Kane, Barnsley. 6 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 1886. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 2.— E Division.— For stealing a dark bay geld- ing, aged, 13 hands 2 in., small piece of hair off off knee, white spot on back near withers, thin mane, short tail, thin legs; a set of brass mounted harness, rings in hames, silver- plated fore- piece; and a dog- cart, large body, painted chocolate, picked out fine red line3, six holes in bottom, off shaft broken, new tap plate with leather underneath thereon, one cap deficient, splash board worn underneath— A MAN, age 20, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair light; dress, dark green cutaway coat, dark mixture tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. 3,— G Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of FREDERICK WARD, whose apprehension is sought for larceny, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 in , complexion dark, hair ( cut short) brown, moustache slight, eyes brown; dress, black jacket and vest, brown tweed trousers, new boots, hard felt hat. A native of 16, Montague- street, Hammersmith. 4.— P Division.— For stealing £ ll- GEORGE DUNCAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion ruddy, hair and moustache ( slight) dark, eyes hazel; dress, brown tweed coat, dark trousers and vest, side- spring boots, black hard felt hat. A native of Chatham. Is well- known at 12, St. Mary's- street, Portsmouth, and has been employed as potman at Ramsgate and Mar- gate. 5.— Y Division.— For stealing, 3rd inst., £ 63 gold, a plain meerschaum pipe, 1 small red silk pocket- handkerchief and a brass finger ring, set white stone — JOHN and MARY LONG, 1st, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair, whiskers, and moustache light, eyes blue, wears earrings; dress, dark tweed suit, low felt hat; was convicted at Weymouth about 5 years ago for poaching:— 2nd, age 27, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark, one tooth deficient in upper jaw; dress, blue or dark green jacket, trimmed brown fur. Has held a pedlar's licence, and is well known to police at Poole, Dorset. May be found at country fairs. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland- yard, London, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 6.- For felony— DOUGLAS M. SHERWILL, late manager of the Queen Anne's Hotel, Cheapside, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair ( inclined to curl), whiskers and moustache ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes ( full) grey ; dress, dark mixture suit, high black hat. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7.— Luton { Borough).— For stealing £ 12 10s., gold and silver, 6th inst.- WILLIAM HOLLAND, age 16, height about 4 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, freckled face, £ cars from abscess on neck and throat, left foot deformed, and walks on toe with knee bent, pigeon- breasted ; dress, dark coat, light trousers and vest, dark cloth helmet. Is accompanied by a lad named Lole, age about 13, rather shabbily dressed. Information to Head Constable Jaquest, Luton. BERKSHIRE. 8.— Wokirfgham ( County).— For embezzlement— THOMAS WATKINS, late foreman porter, Bracknell fetation, London and S. W. Railway Co., age 31, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion florid, full face, clean shaved, hair dark brown, eyes blue, large mouth, shows his teeth very much when laughing, is addicted to drink, and may be found in the company of low women ; dress, black cloth suit, round hard felt hat. Absconded 2nd inst. Warrant issued. 9.— Wokingham ( County).— For stealing, from the Military College, Sandhurst, 12th inst., a B flat cornet, " Cortnois" stamped on bell, and a B fla clarionet, dark wood, plated keys, maker's name, " Bouffe," stamped thereon— A MAN, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes brown; dress, brown suit, round hard felt hat, old and discoloured. Stated he was formerly in the band of the 15th Hussars. Information to Supt. Atkin, Wokingham. 10.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For stealing, 27th alt.— A 52- inch bicycle, Bown's bearings both wheels, hollow forks, cow- horn liandle- bar, square slioulder- head, telescope slide springs, detachable cranks, one plated pedal and one plain— BARNES ( sup- posed false), age about 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., mous- tache brown ; dress, dark clothes, hard felt hat. 11.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For stealing, 7th inst.— A full 51- inch bicycle, enamelled black, usual bright parts plated, cow- horn handle ba rs, " Klysey's " black ventilated handles, adjustable cranks, ball pedals, nuts of same not plated, " D " washers deficient, suspension saddle ( stitching in front undone), " Nagel's" adjustable step, with long curve screw, 72 spokes in front wheel, J U rim, " Timberlake's " wired tires, brake joint on handle, without brake, Bown's ball- bearings to both wheels, spring bright— A MAN who gave the name of JOHNSON, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., moustache slight; dress, black jacket, dark check trousers, hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12.— Wisbech ( Borough).— For obtaining goods by fraud— W. C. ROGERS, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., whiskers ( shaved on chin) and moustache light; dress, dark coat, brown tweed trousers and vest, lace boots, double peaked cap. His modus operandi is to present a bill for goods pur- porting to emanate from the " South of England Tele phone Company, Limited," and signed Mr. Chas. Scouse, Superintendent, the same being a forgery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sharpe, Wisbech. CARDIGANSHIRE. 13.— Aberystwith ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, at Lledrod, 30th ult., a grey mare pony, aged, 13 hands, sore under collar on right shoulder— JOHN LOVELL, alias SMITH, age 60, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and whiskers ( cut short) dark ; dress, dark grey jacket, black felt hat. A native of Carmarthen ; travels the country with a horse and cart, selling tin wares, accompanied by his wife and several children, two of whom are grown- up boys. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Lloyd, Aberystwith. CHESHIRE. 14.— Runcorn ( County).— For failing to report- License Holder JOHN PRESCOTT, Office No. 30416, age 48, height 5 ft. 6j in, complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes blue, several scars on top and front of scalp, and 1 on elbow, anchor right forearm, 2 brace- lets on right wrist. Sentenced at Liverpool, 18th April, 1882, to 5 years' penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 24th April, 1886. 1302. Information to Supt. Hollingworth, Runcorn. 15.— Stockport) Borough).— For stealing, 9 th inst., a gentleman's old silver verge watch, No. 8124 ; 1 old black skirt, with three cross pieces in front; 1 grey and black plaid woollen cloth bodice, and 1 linen apron — A Woman, who gave the name of MARY, age about 50, medium height, hair ( turning grey) dark ; dressed in stolen jacket, skirt, and^ apron, broken plaid shawl, side- spring boots. Stated she came from Glossop. Information to Lieut.- Colonel Staples, Chief Con- stable, Stockport. CUMBERLAND. 16.— Penrith ( County).— For stealing an overcoat ( recovered)— A TRAMP, age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark, hair, whiskers, and moustache ( turning grey) dark brown ; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey trousers ( patched at knees), boots cut in 2 or 3 places, hard felt hat. Stated he had been in the Army. Information to Supt. Fowler, Penrith. DEN BIGHSHI RE. 17.— Wrexham ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee WM. HAMPSON, Office No. 31174, age 41, height 5 ft. 6j in., complexion sallow, hair dark brcwn, eyes grey, scars on bridge of nose and left eyebrow, blue marks right eyebrow. Sentenced at Shrewsbury, 20th October, 1885, to 9 calendar months' hard labour and 2 years' police supervision for larceny. 888. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Wrex- ham. DERBYSHIRE. 18.— Bel per ( County) For an offence under Sec- tion 5 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1885— FRANCIS O'NEIL, late a police- sergeant in the Derbyshire Constabulary, age about 30, height 5 ft. in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache and beard sandy ( may have shaved), speaks with an Irish accent; dress, grey tweed suit, dark hat; had with him a tin trunk. May endeavour to leave the country. Absconded 23rd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Belper. DORSETSHIRE. 19.— Shaftesbury ( County).— For housebreaking, and stealing 9 sovereigns and a brown chamois leather purse— A TRAMP, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair, whiskers, and moustache brown, high cheek- bones ; dress, long brown coat and trousers, lace boots, black felt hat ( all old). Warrant issued. DURHAM. 20— Sunderland ( Borough).— For stealing a larg e sum of money— JOHN CRAIG, fish salesman, age 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair ( cut short) grey. Is a great snuff taker, and carries a silver snuff- box, " James Riddle " engraved on lid. May endeavour to leave the country. Absconded 26th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Huntley, Sunder- land. ESSEX. 21.— Ongar ( County).— For stealing, at Epping, 9th inst.— 1 gold open face watch, converted from verge to lever ; 1 silver open face verge ; 2 open face silver Genevas; 1 silver Open face English lever, No. 15000 ; 1 open face silver Geneva, f- plate ( new); 3 old gold rings; a set of watch and clock brushes ; 2 pairs pliers ; 2 pairs cutting ditto ; 1 bench key ; 2 or 3 files; and a pair of tweezers — ROBERT GILL, alias BRUCE, a tramping watchmaker, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( partly bald) light brown, moustache inclined to be red, eyes blue, large thin nose, ring tattooed one finger; dress, black diagonal cutaway coat and vest, brown striped trousers, lace boots, hard felt hat. Information to Major Poyntz, Chief Constable, Chelmsford, or to Inspector Robinson, Ongar. FLINTSHIRE. 22.— Connahs Quay ( County). — For stealing clothing from the schooner " City of Chester," 10th inst. ( See Case No. 19, \ Zth inst.)— A TRAMP, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sunburnt, whiskers sandy, full face ; dress, blue cloth monkey jacket ( supposed stolen jacket) and light moleskin trousers, soft billycock hat; appearance of a respect- able working- man. May be found amongst shipping. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Bolton, Mold, or to Inspector MinshuJl, Connahs Quay.,. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. l 23.— Gloucester ( County).— For stealing a white clothes basket containing 5 chemises, 5 pairs of female drawers, 2 nightgowns, 1 cotton dress, pink and blue stripes and blue spots, 2 men's white shirts, 2 night- shirts, 1 brown holland apron trimmed red, 11 or 12 white collars, 1 pair white cuffs, 15 or 16 chamber towels ( white with red border), 15 or 16 white pillow- cases, and 1 blue sailor collar, some marked " Shrimp- ton," others " White"— JOSEPH McGUINESS, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress, dark suit, black bowler hat ( all old). A native of Gloucester. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester. HEREFORDSHIRE. 24.— Weobley f County J.— Y or stealing a scythe I recovered) at Clifford- ALBERT or ALFRED CUR- TIS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache ( slight) light, knock- kneed, and walks with a shuffling gait; dress, dark or grey cloth jacket, moleskin trousers, nailed boots, black bowler hat ( all old). A labourer ; native of Glouces- tershire. May endeavour to obtain work at farm- houses turnip hoeing. Information to Supt. Ovens, Weobley. KENT. 25.— Ashford ( County).— For stealing, at Brook- land, 9th inst.— 1 piccolo ; 1 umbrella ; 1 hymn- book, " Fanny Offen" written on flyleaf; and 12s. 6d.— A MAN who gave the name of ROBERTS, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight, complexion sallow, full beard ( turning grey), very thin face, Roman nose; dress, dark coat and vest, grey mixture trousers, hard felt hat; respectable appearance. 26.— Ashford { County). — For stealing, between 14th and 16th inst.— 1 ebony brace, mounted with brass, 1 set of bits, 1 jack- plane, 1 smoothing plane, 1 f- bead ditto, 1 hammer, several bradawls, 1 screw- driver, 3 chisels, 1 oilstone, 1 tool- basket, 1 saw- set, 1 patent ditto, several files, 1 pair compasses, and 1 sharping- slip- all marked " G." or " George Sacre — FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 1886. A tramping carpenter ; is very active. Information to Supt. Wenham, Ashford. 27.— Chatham ( County).)— For deserting his wife and family- LEONARD JOHN ALBERTO, age about 32, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, moustache and imperial. A tailor ; has been in the army, and may be found at military tailor shops. Warrant issued. 28.— Chatham ( County).— For deserting wife and family— ALEXANDER McADAM, age about 42, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue. A tailor ; has served in the Royal Engi- neers. Warrant issued. 29.— Chatham ( County).— For deserting wife and family— PATRICK CULHENE, a pensioner from the 62nd Regiment, age about 39, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in.. hair and whiskers sandy ; dress, light suit, hard felt hat. Has been employed as labourer in Chatham Dockyard. 30.— Chatham ( County).— For deserting from the Royal Marines, 9th inst., and stealing 2 clarionets— CHARLES WOODVILLE, a bandsman, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, moustache ( slight) dark, hesitates very much when suddenly spoken to, of gentle- manly appearance and good address; dress, light dust coat, and high hat, carried a Gladstone bag with white mountings. May endeavour to go to America. Information to Supt. Coppinger, Chatham. 31.— Folkestone ( Borough). — For stealing, 16th inst.— A Coventry Machinist Company's " Club " tri- cycle, rear steerer, painted black throughout, ball bearings, spoon brake, recently fitted with new tyres— A MAN who gave the name of HARRIS, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, moustache very slight; dress, light suit, black hard felt bat. Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. 32.— Tunbridge Wells ( Borough).— For stealing from a bedroom at the Tunbridge Wells Hydropathic Spa, 31st ult.— A lady's gold keyless hunting watch, No. 22088, maker Caft, Geneva" ; 1 fine gold filigree brooch ; 1 large gold band bracelet; 1 small fine gold neck- chain ; 1 small imitation gold bracelet, with heart pendant; and a leather purse containing two foreign stamps— A MAN, who stated he was sent to attend to the electric bells ( false), age about 22, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., moustache ( slight) light; dress, pepper and- salt mixture jacket, light trousers ( tight fitting), double- peaked cap. ( Supposed same as described in Cases Nos. 33 and 133, ZOth ult. Information to Head Constable Embery, Tunbridge Wells. LANCASHIRE. 33.— Bacup ( County).— For obtaining £ i by false pretences, and stealing a pair of spectacles, at Craw shawbooth, 10th inst.— JOHN CONWAY, age 25. height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and mous tache dark brown; dress, dark tweed suit, brown billycock hat. Is a hawker of spectacles, and gener ally carries a black bag or paper parcel; has a pedlar's certificate in his possession issued at Blackburn, but which expired 16th inst. Travels the northern counties particularly Lancashire and Yorkshire.— JAMES CONWAY, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair ( inclined to curl) rather sandy, whiskers and moustache light sandy ; dress, tweed suit ( trousers of lighter colour than coat), black hard billycock hat. A hawker of spectacles, and generally travels the country with his brother. Is now wanted at Leek, Stafford shire, for a similar offence. Supposed accompanied by a woman, age about 23, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in-, hair dark ; dress, long black jacket trimmed fur, black bonnet and veil. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Norris, Bacup. 34.— Church ( County). — For attempted rape— MARTIN FYE, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache ( slight) dark, long thin features, sharp nose; dress, short brown jacket, pockets at side, ticket ditto, and one outside breast, dark trousers, lace boots, black felt hat, with broad rim. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Eatough, Church. 35.— Hurst ( County).— For burglary at Hooley Hill, 27th ult, and stealing 1 brown mixture single breasted tweed jacket, black lining, brown bone but tons, pockets on hips and outside left breast; and a pair of stout lace boots, newly soled and heeled, size 8 — BENJAMIN STOCK, age 34, height 5 ft. 2 in., com plexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes ( right dim and turns inwards) grey, sailor and 2 flags tattooed right wrist, star and anchor left arm, bird and wreath back of right hand ; dress, black worsted cloth jacket, dark blue cloth vest, stand- up collar and tie, hard felt hat. A native of Royton; frequents common lodging- houses. Information to Supt. M REWARD- ISSING, since Thursday, July 29th, 1886, from St. Leonards- on Sea, a young gentleman, named ARTHUR HAYES, 24 years of age ( looks younger), height about 5ft. 4i inches, brown hair, dark eyes, small moustache, no whiskers, rather sunburnt complexion, under lip slightly projects; hesitates in speaking when excited; rather weak intellect; slight build ; dressed in a light tweed suit, brown deer- stalker hat, side- spring boots, coloured woollen shirt. Carried a silver keyless watch and silver albert chain, with com- pass pendant, which he has no doubt pledged or sold. Has been confined in a lunatic asylum, and may be found sleeping rough in barns & c., or in casual wards. Whoever will give such information at the Police Office, Silverliill; or at the Central Police Station, Hastings, as will lead to his recovery, shall receive the above reward, which will be paid by W.
