THE POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 12, 1886. I VOL. III., No. 230. REGULATIONS- I. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. i. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force- 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of tome person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Beery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; aiul, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analagous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehendtd or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will bt wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue s) wuld be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, GrC-„ Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond $ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 13b, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted as advertisement*. J. MONRO, Editor. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. FORGED CHEQUES. The special attention of Police is drawn to a WOMAN who is uttering forged cheques in Provincial towns. The above is a fac- simile of a cheque, and of the endorse- ment thereto, which was passed at Winchester on 22nd January last. She has in her po bcosion 57 more of these cheques, and will probably endeavour to pass them in the Pro- vinces. It is requested that the Police will show this engraving to tradesmen, and ask them to assist to secure the woman's arrest in case she should come under their notice. Description: Age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, fringe ; dresses respectably, sometimes wears a veil; of good manners. Accompanied by a man, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, rather stout; wears a long dark overcoat and low hat; supposed GEORGE FREDERICK SALTER, alias HERBERT NEWMAN, see POLICE GAZETTE, Cases No. 23 and 24, 19th, and Cases No. IT and 18, 26th ult,; also GAZETTE, 13th November last, Case No. 9. TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 1886. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 11.— Slough ( County).— For stealing, at Chalpont St. Giles, 12th December last, a brown cart mare ( re- covered at Hounslow) 4- JOHN MEAD, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair, beard, and whiskers ( short) dark, eyes dark brown, sometimes clean shaved, appearance of a costermonger; dress, long dark overcoat, black- and- white dogskin vest, broad cord trousers, sometimes wears long black leather leggings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dunham, Slough. ; CHESHIRE. 12.— Hyde ( County).— The body of HENRY HOR- 110CKS ( Case No. 8, 26th ult.), has been found in the canal at Dukintield. , 13.— Stockport ( Borough).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a pair of ladies' high kid button boots, size 4, lined, 12 buttons up side, mauve leather round tops— A MAN, age about 30, medium, height and build, dress, short dark jacket, light trousers, shoes, and black hard felt hat. 14.— Stockport ( Borough).— For uttering counter- feit florins, 8th inst.- A WOMAN, age 35 to 40, medium height and build, complexion pale, wore a dark shawl over her head, and spoke with an Irish accent. Is supposed to have come from Manchester. The florins are dated 1872 and 1873. Information to Lieut- Colonel Staples, Chief Con- stable, Stockport. CUMBERLAND. 15.— Penrith ( County).— For obtaining two £ 5 notes by means of the three- card trick— THREE MEN : 1st age 40, height 6 ft, complexion, hair, and whiskers ( short and thin), dark ; dress, dark coat, light trousers, black leggings ; 2nd, age 40, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair and whiskers sandy ; dress, brown overcoat, dark clothes ; 3rd, age 40 to 45, hair, beard ( thick), and moustache dark ; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat with flat top. Information to the Chief Constable, Carlisle, or to Supt. Fowler, Penrith. DERBYSHIRE. 16. — Derby ( County).— For cruelty to_ horses— EDWARD FOUNDS alias DEAF BURKE, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft, ,9 in., is very deaf; dress, dark tweed jacket, cotton- cord, trousers, hard felt hat, lace boots. A drover. May be found at markets and fairs. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Lawson, Derby. ESSEX. 17.— Brentwood ( County).— For deserting his child 28th January last- ALFRED PAYITT, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair light, full features. A bricklayer; native of Aveley, Essex. Supposed to be working in Kent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. 18.— Epping { County).— For stealing a Kentish ewe ( in lamb) at Theydon Garnon, 6th inst.— WIL- LIAM LAWRENCE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion and eyes dark, hair ( slightly grey) very dark, clean shaved, walks with a swagger- ing gait, of Jewish appearance ; dress, speckled tweed suit, side pockets on coat, lace shoes ( old), black hard felt hat, may be wearing a black overcoat and cord trousers ; a fish hawker, native of Theydon Bois, Essex. May be found hawking fish, sausages, and saveloys in the neighbourhood of Buckhurst Hill, Waltham Abbey, and Enfield. Warrant issued. ( i Information to Supt. Lennon, Epping. HEREFORDSHIRE. 19.— Leominster { County). — For stealing at Downton, Leintwardine, 13th ult., a small silver English lever watch, No. 8161, maker " J. Johnson, London," small jet chain attached— A TRAMP, age about 50. height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion florid, hair and whiskers dark ; dress, long black coat, moleskin vest, cord trousers, heavy lace boots, old felt hat, carried a small webbing satchel. Information to Supt. Strangward, Leominster. £ 20 REWARD. 20.— Hereford ( City).— Woodcut portrait and description of ROBERT ANDREWS, a rate collector, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 600, the moneys of the ratepayers, age 33, height ( about) 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache ( cut short), black ( may shave), eyes hazel, short- sighted, wearA spectacles, and when looking at anything stares very hard ; may be wearing dark, or a dark grey ribbed suit. CITY OF LONDON. 8.— For forgery— OSBORNE CHARLES VYSE ALDIS, late proprietor of the Wellington Club, Gros- venor- place, London, and of Rose Cottage, Torquay, Devon, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, hair and small whiskers dark brown, otherwise clean shaved, very high forehead, long upper lip, cheerful countenance ; dress, dark clothes, broad brim hat. Is well known at Brighton, Richmond, Surrey, and Wilton. Warrant issued. 9 — For embezzlement— HENRY ADOLPHUS CRAYMER, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., well built, com- plexion, hair, and moustache ( small) dark. A clerk ; was lately employed at the Post Office, 82, Coleraan- street, E. C., and resided at " The Woodland," 25, Brom- wood- road, Wandsworth. May be accompanied by his wife, age 28, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight, complexion pale, hair sandy. Warrant issued. 10.— For forgery— EDWARD BALDWIN, age 45, ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, hair dark brown, face ( bloated) full, clean shaved, is addicted to drink, dresses well, and usually wears a coloured necktie; of gentlemanly appearance. Has friends on the Essex coast, and an interest in an estate in Ireland. Late of 319, California street, San Fran- cisco. Absconded 19th ult. Warrant issued. Was last seen at Liverpool- street Station at 11.30 a. m. 18th ult., and was then wearing a low hard felt hat, long dark brown ulster with cape. His luggage consisted of a large brown Gladstone bag, a small black ditto, brown leather hat- case, and brown travelling rug with fringe; also a dark green silk umbrella in case, and walking stick with gold knob. Supposed will endeavour to go abroad. Is fond of billiards and the society of gay women. Warrant issued. 5.— B Division,— For obtaining money by fraud WATSON, alias MITCHELL, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. lu or 11 in, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers ( slighi), and moustache brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, thumb right hand deformed ; dress, long brown overcoat, dark trousers, black hard felt hat, of good address. Appearance of a mechanic. He repre- sents himself to be in the employ of Messrs. Jennings, sanitary engineers, Lambeth Palace- road, and furnishes estimates for alterations, ifcc., whereby he usually succeeds in fraudulently obtaining a gratuity. 6.— B Division.— For embezzling £ 220, 28th ult. — CHARLES THORPE, age 40 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light sandy, eyes grey, side whiskers and moustache ( slight) light, shaved on chin ; has been a purser's clerk on board ship ; dress, tweed suit, light trousers and overcoat, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. ".— X Division — For fraudulently obtaining money by pledging inferior diamonds, which had been painted and made to appear to be of superior quality— DUDLEY S. MANSFIELD, alias BURROWS, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair ( straight) light brown, moustache ( heavy) brown, long thin nose ; well dressed, and of gentlemanly appearance.— WILLIAM VERRALL, a dealer in jewellery, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., medium build, complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache ( slight) light, well educated, and of gentle- manly appearance ; dress, black overcoat, with astra- chan collar and cuffs, dark clothes. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. A storekeeper ; native of Dollar, Stirling. Warrant issued. 3.— Central Office.— Woodcut, portrait and de- scrijtion of GEORGE BERNARD HARVEY DREW, a solicitor, whose apprehension is sought for ernl ezzle- ment, age 40, height 5 ft. 11 in., stout, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brovyji, generally clean shaved, but may be growing beard or moustache ; has a nervous twitching of the head when talking, arising from drinking habits; of gentlemanly appearance. May be found at seaside or other fashionable resorts and will probably assume the name of Arthur Adair. A native of Portland, but has resided in Birmingham, and has relatives living in the Aston and Havelock roads, Holly- bank, and a brother at the County Court; also friends in Man- chester, Weymouth, and Norfolk. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Hereford Board of Guardians for such information as shall lead to Andrews' apprehension. Information to Head Constable Richardson, Here- ford. ' is much addicted to drink, and very quarrelsome. An ironworks labourer ; has been employed at Mossend, Motherwell, Newcastle- on- Tyne, and Widnes Iron Works. An Irishman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stewart, Coatbridge. HERTFORDSHIRE. 21.— Hemel- Hempstead ( County).— For obtain- ing by false and fraudulent pretences, at Great Berk- hamsted, 16th December last, five dozen wooden malt shovels ( value £ 10 13s.) — WILLIAM BATES or THORPE, age 40 to 45 years, height 5 ft. 7 in., com plexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ; dresses respectably. A dealer in wooden ware, mother resides at Morton, Gainsborough ; will probably visit Notting ham or Leicester, and is well known at Hull and Newark. Warrant issued. 22.— Hemel- Hempstead ( County).— For stealing at Great Berkhamsted, 27th ult., £ 34— HERBERT GOAT, age 18, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark; dress, short diagonal cloth jacket ( pockets at side), brown ( small check) trousers, hard felt hat, low shoes, walks carelessly, and carries both hands in his jacket pockets. A draper'^ assistant, native of Saffron Walden, Essex. Has friends residing at 14, Watney- street, Commercial- road East. May endeavour to enlist or leave the country. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Hemel- Hempstead. 23.— Ware ( County).— For stealing from a public- house a brown leather purse containing about £ 8 gold and silver, a gentleman's gold mourning ring, " In memory of " engraved outside and " Eliza Jones died " with date and age, also initials C. H. P. inside; an old silver coin about the size of a five- shilling piece, marked " Republican" — A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair, beard, and moustache light brown or sandy, blind left eye, scar over left eyebrow ; dress, brown coat, light corduroy trousers, blue striped shirt, red scarf, soft felt hat ; carries a walking- stick. 24.— Ware ( County).— For stealing potatoes and assaulting police — EDWARD SMITH, alias DARKEY, age about 27, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, moustache ( small), and eyes dark ; dress, long drab overcoat, tight- fitting corduroy trousers. Ap- pearance of a gipsy, and is well known to the Blink- leys and other gipsy tribes, attends fairs, race meet- ings, < fcc., and will probably be found in gipsy- vans or common lodging- houses. A chair- bottomer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hilton, Ware. KENT. 25.— Ashford ( County).— For embezzlement at Wye, 22nd ult.— HENRY FORDRED, a brewer's storekeeper and drayman, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, beard, and whiskers dark brown, eyes dark, is very talkative, and occasion- ally speaks a few words in French ; dress, supposed dark clothes, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wenham, Ashford. LANARKSHIRE. 26.— Coatbridge ( County).— For assaulting Police, 20th ult.— JAMES HUGHES, age 26, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) dark, eyes grey or hazel; dresa, dark tweed suit, black velvet cap with peak, tassel and two plaited strings, lace boots ; may be wearing black cord eoat and vest, white moleskin trousers, and trong lace boots. Speaks with a strong Irish accent, LANCASHIRE. 27.— Burnley [ County).— For failing to report- Supervisee JOHN HALSTEAD, Office No. 26349, age 31, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, scars back of neck and on both elbows. Sen- tenced at Manchester, 23rd August, 1880, to 5 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for felony. G 801. 28.— Burnley { County}.— For failing to report- Supervisee JAMES HOOLER, alias JOHN BAN- NISTER and JAMES WOOLER, Office No. 16736, age 53, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scars over right eyebrow, on second finger right hand, and on each groin, birthmarks back of right thigh. Sentenced at Preston, 29th August, 1873, to 10 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for housebreaking. Z 1085. Information to Superintendent, Burnley. £ 10 REWARD. 29.— Hurst ( County).— For stealing £ 80, at Auden- shaw, 6th inst.— JOSEPH BENSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair ( cut short and curly in front) dark brown, eyes blue; dress brown melton overcoat, dark plaid suit ( small pattern), black felt hat. A native of Longsight, Manchesterr. The above reward will be paid by Mr. W. Ruttenaw, of Audenshaw, for the apprehension and conviction of Benson, and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barnett, Hurst. 30.— Leigh. ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee THOMAB HALE, Office No. 29637, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, moles back of left elbow and on shoulders, scar on end of right middle finger. Sentenced at Liverpool, 22nd April, 1884, to 18 calendar months' hard labour and 3 years' police supervision for obtaining money by false pretences. 1812. Information to the Superintendent of Leigh. 31 Pe m berton ( County).— For failing to report- License Holder JAMES GOJRNER, alias ASHCROFT, Office No. 29273, age 37, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey, scars on forehead, bridge of nose, right eyebrow, under chin, on right arm and right thumb, pockpitted. Sentenced at Kirk- dale, 27th April, 1880, to 7 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for felony. Licensed 13th November, 1885. G 545. Information to Supt. Sentenced at Maidstone, 22nd Oct., 1880, to 12 months' imprisonment and 5 years' police supervision for larceny. 33.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder JAMES WYNNE, alias McLAUGH- LIN, TAYLOR, JOHN MORCIN, and MICHAEL FITZGERALD, Office No. 29964, age 50, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, slightly pockmarked, left little finger crooked, knock- kneed. Sentenced at Preston, 23rd May, 1878, to 10 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for larceny. S E 574. 34.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder WILLIAM HEYES, alias PARKER and PATTISON, Office No. 28787, age 25, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair sandy, eyes blue, W. H. P., E. C., flag, pile of shot, mermaid, and other marks on left forearm, bracelet on each wrist. Sentenced at Liverpool, 17th April, 1880, to 7 years' penal servitude for burglary. G 421. 35.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder ANN O'HARE, alias ANN, ELIZA- BETH, and ELIZABETH ANN CONOLLY, Office No. 29600, age 27, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes hazel, deeply pockpitted. Sentenced at Liverpool, 11th August, 18 to 5 years' penal servi- tude for larceny ( person). 78. Information to Chief Superintendent, Detective Department, Liverpool. 36.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report- Supervisee ELLEN MONAGHAN, alias ROBSON, Office No. 22380, age 34, height 5 ft. 10 in. ; comr plexion fair, hair sandy, eyes grey, scars on forehead and across nose. Sentenced at Manchester, 9th February, 1882, to 18 months' imprisonment and 7 years' police supervision for larceny ( person). 10562. 37.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report- Supervisee ROBERT FLETCHER, alias JOHN HOWARTH, and GEORGE GUELPH, Office No. 14034, age 51, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes dark grey, scars on neck, bridge of nose, and left wrist, lost upper front teeth, round- shouldered. Sentenced at Salford, 19th August, 1872, to 7 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police super- vision for larceny. H Y 1160. 38.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report- Supervisee JAMES PROUDLOVE, Office No. 17681, age 43, height 5 ft. 5' in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, partly bald, scar each side of forehead, boil marks centre and bottom of back. Sentenced at Manchester, 10th February, 1881, to 8 months' hard labour and 7 years' police supervision for larceny. 54833. 39.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder THOMAS THOMPSON, Office No. 29737, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair black ( bushy), eyes gijey, scars on scalp, bridge of nose, on cheeks, corner of each eye, on right leg, on left ear and elbow, and eruption scars all over body. Sen- tenced at Manchester, 26th April, 1880, to 7 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for shopbreaking.
