The POLICE GAZETTE will be published on Thurs- day next, 24th inst., in lieu of Christmas Day, and it is specially requested that all copy for insertion be forwarded as early as possible to ensure publication. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. The Editor desires to call attention to the fact that all photographs of prisoners in custody, trans- mitted to the Convict Branch of the Metropoli- tan Police Office, for purposes of identification, are seen by the police and warders who visit all prisoners under remand, in the Metropolitan Police District three times a week. This system, esta- blished in 1879, has been the means of ascertaining the previous convictions of 7000 prisoners, and affords great facilities to Chief Officers of Police, and the Governors of Her Majesty's Prisons. Such photographs are also oompared with the albums in the Convict Office con- taining the portraits of all Convicts liberated in the Kingdom, which are further open to the personal examination of any police officer or warder. METEOPOLITAN POLICE. CAUT 1.— Information has been received by Mr. Monro, Assis- tant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, that the notorious turf fraud garg, comprised of William Kurr, Frederick Kurr, Edwin Murray, and others, have issued from Geneva a circular 10 private persons and others in Great Britain and elsewhere, offering for sale a gold key- less watch for £ 2, that < an be pledged in England for £ 2 10s., and holding out is an inducement to intending purchasers a present of a ( oupon in Government Lotteries in France, Antwerp, and Switzerland, entitling them to the chance of winning £ 6,000, > r 1,975 smaller prizes. As a proof of the vane of the watch, a fac- simile of the watch, and duplicate of i watch pledged for £ 2 10s. at one of the well- known Lonon pawnbrokers, is inserted in the circular. Asa matter d fact, the pledging is correct, but the watch was taken oulof pledge before this informa- tion was received, probably to avoid inspection, and the pawnbroker is unable to descibe it otherwise than as a gold keyless watch. It is supposed that th modus operandi will be that in the first instance a watch ^ orth the money will be sent as a sample. This will indue the purchaser to recommend it to his friends, and probab- send a larger order with a remittance. In exchange heVill obtain worthless Swiss watches, or very inferior arti^ s, and having once parted with his money, there will be \ remedy for him. The firm issuing these Oculars is styled " Henry Williams & Co., Geneva." W. iamsis a well- known alias of E. Murray. 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1885. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. ( Late SoperintendMt X Division Metropolitan Police.) WHAT SHALL I DO THEN WITH JESUS? Last week we considered answers to this question as illustrated to us in Old Testament days. This week let us take it into the light of the first Christmas, and see who received Jesus, and who received Him not. Very significant is the earliest record : " There was no room for Him iD the Inn." Many coming and going, no thought about the coming Messiah, so no recognition of Him; no denial of Him ; simply He was crowded out. All minds were not thus pre- occupied and unprepared, for next we read of the shepherds receiving the " glad tidings," undaunted by the startling contrast presented to their minds between the fact announced and the sign " Glory," " a babe, " In the Highest," " lying in a manger," " Christ the Lord," " wrapped in swaddling clothes!" Wonderful was the faith which said : " Let us go and not see if these things are so," but " see this thing which is come to pass." A fitting prelude to becoming the first Evangelists— simplicity first, science next— finds its way to the Saviour. The familiar story of the wise men comes next, their journey, their perse- verance, their faith, their worship of the Holy Child ; and alongside are warning records of Herod, and all Jerusalem being troubled at the very thought suggested to them by these earnest travellers, of chief priests, scribes, and Sanhedrims, in spite of most accurate head knowledge, ignoring the Christ they subsequently condemned to death. Why did they not receive Him 1 Why now is He not received 1 Is it because there is no room for Him 1 Is it because He comes not in the way we expected Him to come ? Is it because we cannot yield to His titles as those shepherds and magi did, acknowledging Him as 11 Christ the Lord," or " He Who is born King"? Many would like Jesus to save them from Hell, who have no wish that Christ should save them from sin. Many like to be bidden " Come to Christ as you are," who shrink from coming to be made what they are not. Is there not the old rebellion at the Lordship of Christ? the re- delivery of " We will not have this man to reign over us !" Think over these things.
