SPECIAL NOTICE- ruQiTivE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. ( Late Superintendent X Division Metropolitan Police.) " GOING OUT AND COMING SN." " Religion in common life," an expression often used. We see a good deal of common life, not much religion. These words, " going out and coming in," are often found in Scripture, and help us to realise the daily details into which, and through which, Christianity may run, as a golden thread. Solomon, the wise man, said, , lI am a little child, I know not how to go out or come in.' The words represented to him his helplessness, and momently dependence upon God, and he seems to remind God in them of his father David's inspired words, " The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth and even for evermore." Moses appears to use the words in connection with the force of example, saying, " Let the Lord set a man over the congregation who may go out before them and come in before them." Tliey are used, too, as the secret of David's personal influence. " All Israel and Judah loved David because he went out and came in before them." It associated bim with their daily life, and may we not take to ourselves these words, " Be ye with the King when He cometh in and when He goeth out," and associate the son of David with our daily life 1 Ezekiel gives us that thought too. " The Prince in the midst of them, when they go' in, He shall go in ; and when they go forth, shall go forth." When an apostle was to be elected, the qualification needed was that he should be " of those men who have companiecl with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us." Lastly, let us see our Lord's own words, " The shepherd of the sheep leadeth them out, he goeth before them ;" adding. " I am the door; by Me. if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture." The going in first mentioned— and must it not be so 1 if there is to be grace and power, wisdom and love, in our daily, hourly, going out, must there not first be the coming in to receive of Him all our need 1 REGENT CIRCUS, PICCADILLY, LONDON.
