THE Police Gazette, OR HUE- AND- CRY. Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover, addressed to the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, authenticated ly a Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn ; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature - will be inserted. %* Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give tho number it bears, as without this information it is almost impossible to rectify the mistake. Prison and Police Authorities are requested to be good enough to inform the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, < fcc., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Hue- and- Cry" no longer necessary. DUBLIN, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1885. ENGLISH POLICE. STOLEN from a dwelling- house in this borough, within the last 12 months :— A massive old fashioned linked chain, yellow gold, engraved, a little less than a yard long, joined together without clasp; oval- sbaped locket loose from the chain, about 1 j inches long, had a pearl on one side in the centre of a black and gold star, and on the other side in black and gold raised letters, " In Memory of." Inside the locket is photo of a lady on one side, and some hair on the other. Information to THOMAS COTTON, Chief Constable, Kendal. Chief Constable's Office, Kendal, October 14, 1885. WANTED at Kendal ( failing to report) Police supervisee, Charles Webster alias Thompson, office No. 27235, 41 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes ; " Nil desperan- dum," the Star of Independance, ^ n left arm; sentenced at Carlisle, 17th October, 1876, to 8 years penal servitude and 2 years Police supervision for housebreaking; liberated 16th December, 1882, W. DESCRIPTION of Henry Lacey, alias Oliver, com mitted for trial at the next City Sessions at Chester, age 38, height 5 feet 5£ inches, complexion sallow, hair turning gray dark, eyes hazel, pockpitted, Onion Jack, sailor and gun on chest, large fish on left side, email ditto right, flag, anchor and star left forearm, bracelet left wrist, anchor back of hand, ring tattooed on each finger of left hand, star and two women right forearm, bracelet and star on wrist, ring on each of three fingers. States he is a native of Australia, and that he was discharged from the 40th Regiment on reduction in 1869. Supposed pre- viously convicted. His wife is at present residing in the county Clare. PARTICULARS of John Thomas Houghton, who absconded on the 5th instant, charged with forgery:— 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ( turning gray), dark brown eyes, high forehead, long features, thin- jawed, slightly tfbwlegged, sharp walker, and has is peculiar twitch in his eyes when laughing. Dress— • mixture tweed suit, reefer jacket, light brown overcoat, steel watch guard and compass appendage. Had in his possession a black leather portmanteau and Jbccwn leather hat- box. Drancourt ( embezzle- ment), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. SCOTCH POLICE. WANTED at Selkirk, on Sheriffs Warrant, charged with having between the 19th August and 21st September, 1885, stolen or embezzled £ 350, the property of tho Directors of the British Linen Company's Bank :— Frank Wood, lately Accountant in the Galashiels Branch of the British Linen Com- pany's Bank, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches in height, large gray eyes, large mouth, fresh, complexion, ordinary make, long dark hair, no beard or whiskers, may have slight dark moustache, walks with a slouching gait, and generally has his hands in his trowsers pockets ; dressed in a rough light brown tweed suit, and carried a black leather travelling ease. Accused left Galashiels on the afternoon of 21st September last, per fast train for Carlisle, and will likely endeavour to go abroad. Police officers are requested to make every search and inquiry for the accused at shipping offices, outward bound vessels, and other likely places. Antonio Mortenega ( rotbary), not arresiei ; Hueand- Cry, 25th September, 18Vt. CITY OF GLASGOW POLICE. £ 100 REWARD. WHEREAS on the night of the 5th of September current, the sale- room, occupied by Mr. Walter Semple, Jeweller, St. Enoch's- lane, 145, Argyle- street, in this City, was entered by means of false keys, and after forcing open two safes with a power- ful crowbar, a large number of gold and silver watches, jewellery, & c.— described in information from this office on 7 th inst.— were stolen and carried away. And whereas a Sheriffs Warrant has been granted for the arrest of James Muirhead, for being con- cerned in the above housebreaking and theft, and who is described as being from 38 to 40 years of age { looks younger), 6 feet 5 or 6 inches hi^ l), sandy hair, inclined to 1 » « iigltt moustache, otherwise clean shaved, sqttre gkatfL. tons, ra*> uw broad, slightly pock- pitted, longish thin face ; dressed in dark tweed suit and felt hat; sharp in his movements ; a native of Edinburgh, speaks ' with English accent, having for a considerable time past been resident in London, but occasionally uses the Scotch dialect; is a betting man, and frequents race meetings, is also known as a " pawn sticker" and dealer in jewellery; was liberated on license from Lusk Prison on 9th November, 1882, where he underwent 5 years' penal servitude for theft, of which he was convicted at Belfast Assizes. Was accompanied by two men of tho following description, viz:— 1st. A man about 36 or 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender made, reddish moustache,, no beard or whiskers, English accent, dressed in a black coat and felt hat 2nd. A man about 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout made, black beard, whiskers, and moustache, and wearing a light drab overcoat, short make. The above reward is offered by Mr. Semple to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thieves- and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount of property recovered. STOLEN in Ayr, during the last ten weeks, a hamrnerless breechloading 12- bore double- barrelled gun. Makers, Williams & Powell, Liverpool. Right, barrel, modified choke ; left, cylindrical;. top snap actions, with fittings, viz:— Cartridge loading- machine, powder and shot measures, screw drivers,, and gun cleaners ( 2). The gun is very short in the barrels, and unusually light, only weighing 6| lbs.; value £ 40. Police Constables are requested to search for said stolen gun, to apprehend any against whom guilt appears, and communicate with D. M'DONALD, Superintendent Police Chambers, Ayr, September 19, 1885. The articles of jewellery stolen on the afternoon or night of the 5th, or morning of the 6th September, from the sale- room occupied by Mr. Walter Semple, Jeweller, St. Enocli's- lane, 145, Argyle- street, in this city, have not been recovered, see Hue- and- Ciy of 11th September, 1885. George Simpson, alias Kerr, miner or pit sinker, native of Lanarkshire, from 32 to 35 years of age ( robbery of jewellery and clothing), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 7th April, 1885. Carl Lemong alias Charles Hotzel ( housebreaking and robbery), not arres'ed; Hue- and- Cry, 2nd October, 18? 5. THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1885. DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Patrick Myles, A290, convicted in Dublin, at Commission, on 9th June, 1881, for housebreaking, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude :— 25 years of age on con- viction, single, prison trade shoemaker; bom in Limerick city; resident before conviction in Church- street, Dublin ; dark brown hair, brown eyes, black eyebrows, regular nose, medium mouth, fresh com- plexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high; butterfly, anchor, and woman on left forearm, and cross on right, boil marks on neck. This man was released from Lusk Prison on licence, 28th July, 1885, and went to reside at No. 4, Lower Cumberland- street, Dublin, which place he has left, without notifying same to the Metropolitan Police, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 84 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, September 14,1885. ( S1204 M.— 58432.) DESCRIPTION of John James Moriarty, late a con- fidential runner in the Hibernian Bank, Dublin, who is wanted on Warrant here, for that he did, on the 29th August, 1885, unlawfully abscond and feloniously steal the sum of £ 2,391 lis. lOrf. sterling, the money and property of the said Bank:— 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, florid complexion, fair hair, no beard, whiskers, or moustache, blue eyes, walks erect; dressed in ( supposed) yellowish tweed suit, and low brown jerry hat. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. WILLIAM REDDY, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G Division, September 3, 1885. DESCRIPTION of Robert Farquharson, Joint Manager of the Munster Bank Dublin, and Agent for the Royal Exchange Assurance Company, Dublin, who disappeared from his residence about mid- day, on the 28th instant, and absconded from his office, leaving his accounts in an unsatisfactory state:— He is about 40 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, dark beard, whiskers, and moustache, slightly tinged with gray, dark fresh complexion, good dark sparkling eyes, prominent teeth, average build, walks with a stoop, dressed in gentlemanly style, generally wears a silk hat; is a native of Scotland. He is suspected of having embezzled over £ 10,000, property of the said Bank. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. ( 30961 M.— 58003,) In the above case the Liquidators of the Munster Bank ( Limited) will pay a reward of £ 500 for the arrest of the said Robert Farquharson, on his being delivered up to the Gaol Authorities in Dublin. Convict Thomas Boyle, described in Hue- and- Cry of 31st July, 1885; not arrested. ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY. Antrim. DESCRIPTION of Hamilton Black, native of Porta- down, who stands charged with having, on the 8th day of October, 1885, in the barony of Upper Massareene, parish of Blaris, embezzled the sum of £ 2 9j. 7the property of his master, Alexander Harvey:— Smart active appearance, blue eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, stout make, 5 feet 8^ inches high, about 21 years of age, black curly hair; wore a black cloth coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a pedlar. Travels through the country selling small articles of woollen ware, & c. Lisburn, October 13, 1885. ( 70886 o.— 22563.) DESCRIPTION of Richard Mayes and James Watson, natives of Lisburn, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 5th September, 1885, in the barony of Upper Massareene, parish of Blaris, com mitted a rape :— 1. Slovenly gait, large hands and feet, low fore- head, two broad front teeth ; gray eyes, regular nose,' fresh complexion, full face, very stout ma< e, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a dark frock coat, gray trowsers, and dark vest; is a carter. 2. Freckled face, walks erect; brown eyes, long nose, dark complexion, round face, very stout make, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 22 years Of age, dark hair; wore a black frock coat, dark striped trowsers and vest; is a mill worker. Lisburn, Sept 11, 1885. Young offender, Andrew G. Armstrong, - not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 29th September, 1885. Joseph Clarke ( robbery of money), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 17th July, 1885. The articles of plate, the property of Surgeon- General John P. Cunningham, which were described in the Hue- and- Ory of the 29th of last May, have not been recovered. The two men, names and native places unknown ( forcible entry and robbery of money), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. Donegal. DESCRIPTION of Henry Kerrigan, native of Ballina- carrick, who stands charged with having, on the 5th day of September, 1885, in the barony of Terhugh, parish of Innismacsaint, committed a serious assault on William Kenny, thereby causing his life to be in imminent danger:— Fresh cut on forehead, square shoulders, black eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 8 eight inches high, about 35 years of age, black hair; wore a round black hat, long blue coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a small farmer. Neil O'Donnell ( assault endangering life), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 30th June, 1885. Down. Hugh Mulholland, described in the Hue- and- Cry of the 21st of October, 1884, has returned to his home. Fermanagh. James Cassidy ( assault endangering life), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 3rd October, 1884. Galway. The brass alms plate, the property of the Honorable Archdeacon Daly, which was stolen from the Parish Church of Gort, on the 25th of September, has been recovered in an adjacent field. Martin Folan ( assault endangering life), not arrested; Hue- ind- Cry, 19th September, 1884, Mary Bligh, alias Lynch, native of Ballymoe, who- disappeared from her home, in the barony of Bally- moe, parish of Drumatemple, on or about the 9th January, 1884, has not been since heard of; Hue- and- Cry, 28th March, 1884. - Patrick Killeen ( assault), not arrested; Hue- and- Ory, 29th April, 1884. Martin Coleman ( sending threatening letters), no4 arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 1st April, 1884. Kerry. DESCRIPTION of a cow and bullock, the property of Daniel Buckly, which were stolen from the lands of Cloghers, parish of Ballymacelligott, barony of Trughenackmy, on the night of 20th or morning of 21st October, 1885:— A dark red milch cow, with turned- in horns, aged about 5 years, and a dark red bullock with a streak of white along the back, and a white tip on the tail, aged about 5 years. Castleisland, Oct. 24, 1885. J ( 71055 c.— 22825.) Five persons, names and native places unknown,, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 29th September, 1885, in the barony of Corkaguiney, parish of Killiney, been five of a party of armed and disguised moonlighters who entered the house of Jeremiah Scanlan, of Maghera- beg, and did forcibly take therefrom a single barrel gun with some powder and shot, not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 6th October, 1885. A fowling piece, a briar- root pipe, and a powder flask, the property of Daniel Griffin, described in the Hue- and- Cry of 6th October, 1885, have not been recovered. The two persons, names and native places un- known, charged with having assaulted Michael Corcoran, and described in the Hue- and- Cry of the 19th of June last, have not been arrested. Five persons, names and native places un- known, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 18th April, 1885, in the barony of Corkaguiny, parish of Ballinorker, attacked the dwelling- houses of John Cruickshank, Inch, and Daniel Daly, Caherpierce, and taken therefrom six guns, and also with seriously assaulting John Cruick- shank on the same occasion by inflicting four cuts on his head with the stock of a gun, & c., have not been arrested, nor the arms recovered; Hue and- Cry, 24th April, 1885. Denis Lyons ( posting threatening notices), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 18th November, 1884. « Kildare, DESCRIPTION of one gelding ass and harness, the property of Patrick King, of Rathgrumely, county Kildare, which were stolen from the lands of Rath- grumely, parish of Narraghmore, barony of jj^ ggh and Reban West, on the night of 14th or morning of 15th October, 1885 :— One gelding ass, dark brown colour, not shod, a black mark under where straddle rests, rather loDg in make, aged about 9 years; value for about £ 4. Michael Doyle ( charged with having feloniously obtained a letter from the Post Office, Carlow, the property of James Carey), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 28th October, 1884. Cavan. Thomas Young ( homicide), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. James Murtagh ( robbery of money), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 13th March, 1885. Cork. John Reilly ( indecent assault), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 29th September, 1885. David Lenihan ( serious assault), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 18th September, 1885. Young offender, Patrick Butler, not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 18th September, 1885. John Casey ( burglary), described in Hue- and- Cry of 23rd June last, not arrested. Daniel Oonnor ( embezzlement), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 26th May, 1885. John Sullivan ( alias Hunt) ( serious assault), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 1st May, 1885. DESCRIPTION of four persons, names unknown, supposed natives of Keel or Lack, near Castlemaine, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 26th and morning of the 27th September, 1885, in the barony of Corkaguiny, parishes of Kilgobbin and Killiney, in company with other armed and disguised moonlighters, numbering about fourteen or fifteen, feloniously attacked the houses of seventeen farmers, and forcibly carried away therefrom various sums of money, a single barrelled muzzle- loading Enfield Rifle Ac., and attempted to swear some of the farmers against paying rent:— 1. " The Captain," small slight man, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 20 years of age, long false whiskers ( gray) down to his waist; wore a slouched hat, long oiled coat 2. Stout maD, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 28 years of age ; wore a woman's black straw bonnet, brown sack coat, brown trowsers thread- bare. S. Face painted with black and yellow streaks downwards, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 26 or 27 years of age; wore a black soft wide- awake hat, gray tweed suit, carried two guns, one being that taken from Mr. Daniel Griffin, during the raid. 4. Very tall and straight, masked face, medium make, 6 feet high, about 27 years of age; wore a red handkerchief over face, long brown tweed over- coat Each of the four carried a double barrelled gun, a pouch and cross belt, and carried revolvers in inside pocket of their coats. The other eleven remained outside the houses, no description can be given, save that all carried double barrelled guns. Dingle, October 1, 1885. ( 70684 c.— 22255.) Pn th DESCRIPTION of two persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having in the 16th day of October, 1885, in the barony of " orth Naas, parish of Naas, broken and entered the dwelling house of John Howe, and carried away therefrom one pair of button and one pair of elastic gentleman's boots ( nearly new), a cotton sheet, and a German Flute :— 1. Fair complexion, round face, medium make, 4 feet 10 inches high, about 16 years of age, fair hair; wore a dark tweed coat, and dark trowsers ; barefooted ; is a tramp. 2. Fair hair ; wore a sbort blue coat. They have been traced in the direction of Dublin. Naas, October 18, 1885. ( 70933 c.— 22634.) Garret Stynes ( house attack and using threatening language), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 31st October, 1884. Kilkenny. Martin Kelly ( robbery of clothing), not arrested j Hue- and- Cry, 10th July, 1885. James Farrell ( absconded from Urlingford Union • Workhouse, taking with him clothing, the property of the Guardians of said union), has mot been wrested; Hue- aDd- Cry, 15th May, 1885. Patrick Canty ( embezzlement), not arrested; Hne- and- Cry, 11th November, 1884. Leitrim. Four men, names and native places unknown, ( who stand charged with having, on the 4th of May, 1885, in the barony of Drumahaire, parish of Drumreilly, been of a party of five armed men, who iorcibly entered the dwelling- house of Patrick M'Morrow, ofFahy, threatened the inmates, and seized and carried away a gun), described in the Hue- and- Cry, of the 12th of May, not arrested. John M'Morrow, who stands charged with having, on the 13th May, 1885, ( failed to appear at Dowra Petty Sessions, to give evidence in a case of house attack by an armed party and robbery of arms, as bound by his recognizance), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. Limerick. DESCRIPTION of David Cleary alias Massicks, native of Ballyroe Upper, who stands charged with having, in the barony of Coslea, parish of Kilfinane, failed to report himself to the Police on change of residence, he being under Police supervision for 5 years from 20th February, 1885 ( see Hue- ind- Ory, 14 th August, 1885) :— Two moles on left wrist and one on right of belly, blue eyes, fresh Complexion, oval face, proportionate make, 5 feet inches high, about 26 years of age on liberation ; wore a light tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer and baker. Kilfinane, October 10, 1885. ( 30641 h.— 586^ 3.)
