STOLEN from a dwelling- house in this borough, within the last 12 months :— A massive old fashioned linked chain, yellow gold, engraved, a little lfess than a yard long, joined together without clasp; oval- shaped locket loose from the chain, about inches long, had a pearl on one side in the centre of a black and gold star, and on the other side in black and gold raised letters, " In Memory of." DESCRIPTION of Henry Lacey, alias Oliver, com- mitted for trial at the next City Sessions at Chester, age 38, height 5 feet inches, complexion sallow, hair turning gray dark, eyes hazel, pockpitted, Union Jack, s'kilor and gun on chest, large fish on left side, small ditto right, flag, anchor and star left forearm, bracelet left wrist, anchor back of hand, ring tattooed on each finger of left hand, star and two women right forearm, bracelet and star on wrist, ring on cach of three fingers. States he is a native of Australia, and that he was discharged from the 40th Regiment on reduction in 1869. Supposed pre- viously convicted. His wife is at present residing in the county Clare. WANTED at Selkirk, on Sheriffs Warrant, charged with having between the 19th August and 21st September, 1885, stolen or embezzled £ 350, the property of the Directors of the British Linen Company's Bank :— Frank Wood, lateiy'Accountant in the Galashiels Branch of the British Linen Com- pany's Bank, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches in height, large gray eyes, large mouth, fresh oomplexion, ordinary make, long dark hair, no beard or whiskers, may have slight dark moustache, walks with a slouching gait, and generally has hi3 hands in his trowsers pockets ; dressed in a rough light brown tweed suit, and carried a black leather travelling case. Accused left Galashiels on the afternoon of 21st September last, per fast train for Carlisle, and will likely endeavour to go abroad. Police officers are requested to make every search and inquiry for the accused at shipping offices, outward bound vessels, and other likely places. WHEREAS on the night of the 5th of September current, the sale- room, occupied by Mr. Walter Semple, Jeweller, St. Enoch's- lane, 145, Argyle- street. in this City, was entered by means of false keys, and after forcing open two safes with a power- ful crowbar, a large number of gold and silver watches, jewellery, & c.— described in information from this office on 7th inst.— were stolen and carried away. And whereas a Sheriff's Warrant has been granted for the arrest of James Muirhead, for being con- cerned in the above housebreaking and tbeft, and who is described as being from 38 to 40 years of age ( looks younger), 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, sandy hair, inclined to be curly, light moustache, otherwise clean shaved, square shoulders, rather broad, slightly pock- pitted, longish thin face ; dressed in dark tweed suit and felt hat; sharp in his movements ; a native of Edinburgh, speaks with English accent, having for a considerable time past been resident in London, but occasionally uses the Scotch dialect; is a betting man, and frequents race meetings, is also known as a " pawn sticker" and dealer in jewellery ; was liberated on license from Lusk Prison on 9th November, 1882, where he underwent 5 years' penal servitude for theft, of which he was convicted at Belfast Assizes. Was accompanied by two men of the following description, viz:— 1st A man about 36 or 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender made, reddish moustache, no beard or whiskers, English accent, dressed in a black coat and felt hat 2nd. A man about 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 or « inches high, stout made, black beard, whiskers, and moustache, and wearing a light drab overcoat, short make. The above reward is offered by Mr. Semple to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thieves and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to tho amount of property recovered. The gun is very short in the barrels, and unusually light, only weighing lbs.; value £ 40. ABSCONDED, on Sunday, the 20th September. 1885, charged with housebreaking, and stealing £ 20 in gold and silver, and a silver 5 cent piece, from his master's house :— Carl Lemong alias Charles Hotzel, an Alsatian German, hair- dresser, 20 years of ago, about 5 feet 4 inehes high, medium build, dark complexion and hair, no whiskers; dressed in blue serge suit, and black or gray hard bowler hat He took a ticket, No. 9391 ( which has not been collected) by the 5.30 p. m. train for Swansea, and stopped in a coffee- house either at Neath or Neyland that night, leaving early the following morning. Supposed to have gone to the south of Ireland. Please cause enquiries to be made at hair- dressers, coffee- houses, & c., and arrest if possible. Warrant issued. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Patrick Myles, A290, convicted in Dublin, at Commission, on 9th Juno, 1881, for housebreaking, and sentenced to 6 years' penal servitude :— 25 years of age on con- viction, single, prison trade shoemaker; born in Limerick city ; resident before conviction in Church- street, Dublin: dark brown hair, brown eyes, black eyebrows, regular nose, medium mouth, fresh com- plexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high ; butterfly, anchor, and woman on left forearm, and cross on right, boil marks on neck. This man was released from Lusk Prison on licence, 28th July, 1885, and went to reside at No. 4, Lower Cumberland- street, Dublin, which place he has left, without notifying same to the Metropolitan Police, and his present whereabouts is unknown. DESCRIPTION of Robert Farquharson, Joint Manager of the Munster Bank Dublin, and Agent for the Royal Exchange Assurance Company, Dublin, who disappeared from his residence about mid- day, on the 28th instant, and absconded from his office, leaving his accounts in an unsatisfactory state:— He is about 40 years old, 5 feot 9 inches high, dark hair, dark beard, whiskers, and moustache, slightly tinged with gray, dark fresh complexion, good dark sparkling eyes, prominent teeth, average build, walks with a stoop, dressed in gentlemanly style, generally wears a silk hat; is a native of Scotland. He is suspected of having embezzled over £ 10,000, property of the said Bank. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. DESCRIPTION of five persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 29th September, 1885, in the barony of Corkaguiney, parish of Killiney, been five of a party of armed and disguised moonlighters who entered the house of Jeremiah Scanlan, of Maghera- beg, and did forcibly take therefrom a single barrel gun with some powder and shot:— 1. Mask on face, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 25 years of age; wore a tall hat, white shirt over coat, leggings up to his knees. 2. Mask on face, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age; wore a low soft hat, white shirt over coat. 3. Mask on face, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 26 years of age ; wore a low black soft hat, white shirt over coat. 4. Mask on face, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 23 years of age; wore a low soft felt hat, white shirt over coat. 5. Mask on face, 5 feet high, about 16 years of age; wore a low soft felt hat, white shirt over coat. Description of the gun:— An old single- barrelled gun, with a crack on the stock, one of the keepers for ramrod missing ( middle one) ; value for about £ 1. Two small flasks containing ilb. powder, and 2 lbs. shot, also taken on the same occasion. Dingle, October 3, 1885. ( 70707 c.— 22297.) DESCRIPTION of four persons, names unknown, supposed natives of Keel or Lack, near Castlemaine, who stand charged with having, on the night of tho 26th and morning of the 27th September, 1885," in the barony of Corkaguiny, parishes of Kilgobbin and Killiney, in company with other armed and disguised moonlighters, numbering about fourteen or fifteen, feloniously attacked the houses of seventeen farmers, and forcibly carried away therefrom various sums of money, a single barrelled muzzle- loading Enfield Rifle & c., and attempted to swear some of the farmers against paying > ent:— 1. " The Captain," small slight man, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 20 years of age, long false whiskers ( gray) down to his waist; wore a slouched hat, long oiled coat. 2. Stout man, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 28 years of age ; wore a woman's black straw bonnet, brown sack coat, brown trowsers thread- bare. 3. Face painted with black and yellow streaks downwards, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 26 or 27 years of ago; wore a black soft wide- awake hat, gray tweed suit, carried two guns, one being that taken from Mr. Daniel Griffin, during the raid. 4. Very tall and straight, masked face, medium make, 6 feet high, about 27 years of age; wore a red handkerchief over face, long brown tweed over- coat. Each of the four carried a double barrelled gun, a pouch and cross belt, and carried revolvers in inside pocket of their coats. DESCRIPTION of a fowling piece, a briar- root pipe, and a powder flask, the property of Daniel Griffin, of Coole, in the parish of Kilgobbin, barony of Corkaguiny, forcibly carried away by a party of about fifteen armed and disguised moonlighters, from his dwelling- house, on the night of the 26th September, 18^ 5 ;— A single barrel muzzle- loading fowling piece, very much neglected; the figure " 2" marked on stock; sighted as a rifle; value for £ 2 10s. A briar- root tobacco pipe, marked with the letters " G. B. D." near the head, and which are much obliterated ; amber mouth- piece, the top of which is broken off; value for 3s. The two persons, names and native places un- known, charged with having assaulted Michael Corcoran, and described in the Hue- and- Cry ^ the 19th of June last, have not been arrested. ^ Five persons, names and native places un- known, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 18th April, 1886, in the barony of Corkaguiny, parish of Ballinorker, attacked the dwelling- houses of John Cruickshank, Inch, and THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, OCTOBER 2 0 , 1885. Daniel Daly, Caherpierce, and taken therefrom six guns, and also with seriously assaulting John Cruick- shank on the same occasion by inflicting four cuts on his head with the stock of a gun, & c., have not been arrested, nor the arms recovered; Hue and- Cry, 21th April, 1885. Kildare, DESCRIPTION of two persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 16th day of October, 1885, in the barony of North Naas, parish of Naas, broken and entered the dwelling house of John Howe, and carried away therefrom one pair of button and one pair of elastic gentleman's boots ( nearly new), a cotton sheet, and a German Flute :— 1. Fair complexion, round face, medium make, 4 feet 10 inches high, about 16 years ot age, fair hair; wore a dark tweed coat, and dark trowsers ; barefooted ; is a tramp. 2. DESCRIPTION of a watch, the property of Thomas Griffith, which was stolen from his person, on the night of the I5th- 16th August, 1885, at Freshford, in the parish of Freshford, barony of Cranagh:— A stiver lever watch, No. believed to be 15301, maker " Hanly," or " Hanlon," not capped, dial plate cracked, portion of second hand broken off, suspected to have been pawned by Costello, who has been arrested, in Dublin, Wicklow, or adjoining counties.
