No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. * » * Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this information it is almost impossible to rectify the mistake. Prison and Police Authorities are requested to be good enough to inform the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, of the aholition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Hue- and- Cry " no longer necessary. DUBLIN, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1885. ENGLISH POLICE. HIGHWAY ROBBERY. DESCRIPTION of Henry Lacey, alias Oliver, com- mitted for trial at the next City Sessions at Chester, age 38, height 5 feet 5f inches, complexion sallow, hair turning gray dark, eyes hazel, pockpitted, Union Jack, sailor and gun on chest, large fish on left side, small ditto right, flag, anchor and star left forearm, bracelet left wrist, anchor back of hand, ring tattooed on each finger of left hand, star and two women right forearm, bracelet and star on wrist, ring on each of three fingers. States he is a native of Australia, and that he was discharged from the 40tli Regiment on reduction in 1869. Supposed pre- viously convicted. His wife is at present residing in the county Clare. PARTICULARS of John Thomas Houghton, who absconded on the 5th instant, charged with forgery:— 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ( turning gray), dark brown eyes, high forehead, long features, thin- jawtd slightly bowlegged, sharp walker, and has a peculiar twitch in his eyes when laughing. Dress— mixture tweed suit, reefer jacket, light brown overcoat, steel watch guard and compass appendage. Had in his possession a black leather portmanteau and brown leather hat- box. Warrant issued. Saunders " ( bank forgery), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 27th March, 18* 5. Licence- holder Samuel Sutton, Registrar No. A 241, not arrested; Hue- and- Ory, 20th March, 1885. John Moran. alias C. F. Drancourt ( embezzle- ment), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. SCOTCH POLICE. cerned in the above housebreaking and theft, and who is described as being from 38 to 40 years of age ( looks younger), 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, sandy hair, inclined to be curly, light moustache, otherwise clean shaved, square shoulders, rather broad, slightly pock- pitted, longish thin face ; dressed in dark tweed suit and felt hat; sharp in his movements ; a native of Edinburgh, speaks with English accent, having for a considerable time past been resident in London, but occasionally uses the Scotch dialect; is a betting man, and frequents race meetings, is also known as a " pawn sticker" and dealer in jewellery ; was liberated on license from Lusk Prison on 9th November, 1882, where he underwent 5 years' penal servitude tor theft, of which he was convicted at Belfast Assizes. Was accompanied by two men of the following description, viz:— 1st. A man about 36 or 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender made, reddish moustache, no beard or whiskers, English accent, dressed in a black coat and felt hat. 2nd. A man about 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout made, black beard, whiskers, and moustache, and wearing a light drab overcoat, short make. The above reward is offered by Mr. Semple to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thieves and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount of property recovered. WHEREAS on the night of the 5th of Septembe current, the sale- room, occupied by Mr Walter Semple Jeweller, St. Enoch's- lane, 145, Argyll street in this City, was entered by means of talse keys, ai d after forcing open two safes with a power- ful crowbar, a large number of gold and siive watches, jewellery, < fec— described in inf rmatio from this office on 7th inst.— were stolen ani carried away. ON the afternoon or night of the 5th, or morning of the 6th September, current, the sale- room occupied by Mr. Walter Semple, Jeweller, St. Enoch's- lane, 145, Argyle- street ( two flight of stairs up), in this city, was broken into by false keys. About 50 old gold coins, various, some of them James VI., sword and sceptre, one of William and Mary, and some spade and club guineas. Two gold coins, 3rd of guinea of George III. One crookston dollar of Mary Queen of Scots. One gold medal of Oliver Cromwell. Several Greek and Roman coins. About 100 carat of unset diamonds, various sizes. Five quarter guineas. The different sections of the crowbar when joined together measures about 6 feet. The above reward is offered by Mr. Semple to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thieves and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount of property recovered. Police Officers are requested to make particular enquiries at pawnbrokers, jewellers, silversmiths, and others for the above- described property, and, should any trace of it or the thieves be obtained, to com- municate without delay with the subscriber. STOLEN in Ayr, during the last ten weeks, a hammerless breechloading 12- bore double- barrelled gun. Makers, Williams & Powell, Liverpool. Right barrel, modified choke; left, cylindrical; top snap actions, with fittings, viz:— Cartridge loading machine, powder and shot measures, screw drivers, and gun cleaners ( 2). The gun is very short in the barrels, and unusually light, only weighing 6^ lbs.; value £ 40. Police Constables are requested to search for said stolen gun, to apprehend any against whom guilt appears, and communicate with D. M'DONALD, Superintendent. Police Chambers, Ayr, September 10, 1885. RENFREWSHIRE CONSTABULARY. Philip Lynch ( homicide), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 30th Jipe, 1885. George Simpson, alias Kerr, miner or pit sinker, native of Lanarkshire, from 32 to 35 years of age ( robbery of jewellery and clothing), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 7th April, 1885. Licence- holder G 970, Alfred Evans, alias Tommy Good- for- Nothing ( failing to report), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. ( 29777 M.— 55205.) WELSH POLICE. NEWPORT ( MON.) POLICE. ABSCONDED, on Sunday, the 20th September, 1885, charged with housebreaking, and stealing £ 20 in gold and silver, and a silver 5 cent, piece, from his master's house :— Carl Lemong alias Charles Hotzel, an Alsatian German, hair- dresser, 20 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, medium build, dark complexion and hair, no whiskers; dressed in blue serge suit, and black or gray hard bowler hat. He took a ticket, No. 9394 ( which has not been collected) by the 5.30 p. m. train for Swansea, and stopped in a coffee- house either at Neath or Neyland that night, leaving early the following morning. Supposed to have gone to the south of Ireland. Please cause enquiries to be made at hair- dressers, coffee- houses, & c., and arrest if possible. Warrant issued. Information to be given to Mr. SINCLAIR, Head Constable, Newport, Mon. Newport, Mon, Sept. 28, 1885. ( 31298 M.— 58567.) DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. DESCRIPTION of a mare, which was s'olen on the night of the 26th or morning of the 27th ultimo, from a field on the Eglinton- road, Donnybrook, pro- perty of Mr. Patrick Field, 29, Ranelagh- road :— A dark brown colour, about 15 hands high, over 7 years old, in good condition, and value for £ 18. Dublin Metropolitan Police, Superintendent's Office, G Division, 1st October, 1885. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Patrick Myles, A290, convicted in Dublin, at Commission, on 9th June, 1881, for housebreaking, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude :— 25 years of age on con- viction, single, prison trade shoemaker; born in Limerick city ; resident before conviction in Church- street, Dublin ; dark brown hair, brown eyes, black eyebrows, regular nose, medium mouth, fresh com- plexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high; butterfly, anchor, and woman on left forearm, and cross on right, boil marks on neck. This man was released from Lusk Prison on licence, 28th July, 1885, and went to reside at No. 4, Lower Cumberland- street, Dublin, which place he has left, without notifying same to the Metropolitan Police, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, September 14,1885. ( 31204 M.— 58432.) DESCRIPTION of John James Moriarty, late a con- fidential runner in the Hibernian Bank, Dublin, who is wanted on Warrant here, for that he did, on the 29th August, 1885, unlawfully abscond and feloniously steal the sum of £ 2,391 lis lOtf. sterling, the money and property of the said Bank:— 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, florid complexion, fair hair, no beard, whiskers, or moustache, blue eyes, walks erect; dressed in ( supposed) yellowish tweed suit, and low brown jerry hat. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDT, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. WILLIAM REDDY, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G Division, September 3, 1885. DESCRIPTION of Robert Farquharson, Joint Manager of the Munster Bank Dublin, and Agent for the Royal Exchange Assurance Company, Dublin, who disappeared from his residence about mid- day, on the 28th instant, and absconded from his office, leaving his accounts in an unsatisfactory state:— He is about 40 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, dark beard, whiskers, and moustache, slightly tinged with gray, dark fresh complexion, good dark sparkling eyes, prominent teeth, average build, walks with a stoop, dressed in gentlemanly style, generally wears a silk hat; is a native of Scotland. He is suspected of having embezzled over £ 10,000, property of the said Bank. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. In the above case the Liquidators of the Munster Bank ( Limited) will pay a reward of £ 500 for the arrest of the said Robert Farquharson, on his being delivered up to the Gaol Authorities in Dublin. Convict Thomas Boyle, described in Hue- and- Cry of 31st. July, 1885 ; not arrested. ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY. Antrim. DESCRIPTION of Richard Mayes and James Watson, natives of Lisburn, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 5th September, 1885, in the barony of Upper Massareene, parish of Blaris, com- mitted a rape:— 1. Slovenly gait, large hands and feet, low fore- head, two broad front teeth ; gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, full face, very stout make, 6 feet 9 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a dark frock coat, gray trowsers, and dark vest; is a carter. 2. Freckled face, walks erect; brown eyes, long nose, dark complexion, round face, very stout make, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark hair; wore a black frock coat, dark striped trowsers and vest; is a mill worker. The articles of plate, the property of Surgeon- General John P. Cunningham, which were described in the Hue- and- Ory of the 29th of last May, have not been recovered. Carlow. Michael Doyle ( charged with having feloniously obtained a letter from the Post Office, Carlow, the property of James Carey), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 28th October, 1884. Cavan. Thomas Young ( homicide), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. James Murtagh ( robbery of money), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 13th March, 1885. Cork. DESCRIPTION of Timothy Lenehan, native of Cahir- lane, who stands charged with having, on the 29th September, 1885, at Dromtrasna Collins, in the barony of Glenquin, parish of Abbeyfeale, violently assaulted Michael Casey, by stabbing him in the side with a dung fork;— Gray eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, long pale face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 23 years of age, fair hair; wore a soft black hat, blue frieze coat, and cord trowsers ; is &, farmer's sou. DESCRIPTION of Henry Kerrigan, native of Ballina- carrick, who stands charged with having, on tho tfmt, day of September, 1885, in the barony of Terhugh, parish of Innismacsaint, committed a serious assault on William Kenny, thereby causing his life to be in imminent danger:— Fresh cut on forehead, square shoulders, black eyes, regular nose, pale complexion) thin face, medium make, 5 feet 8 eight inches high, about 35 years of age, black hair; wore a round black hat, long blue coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a small farmer. John Carroll ( robbery), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 17th October, 1884. Dublin. Patrick and Kate M'Carthy ( charged with having stolen several articles of clothing), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. Fermanagh. James Cassidy ( assault endangering life), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 3rd October, 1884. Galway. DESCRIPTION of a brass alms plate, the property of the Venerable Archdeacon Daly, which was stolen from the Protestant Church of Gort, parish of Kil- tartan, barony of Kiltartan, on some date between the 22nd and 25th September, 1885 :— Brass alms plate, 10 inches diameter, circular, engraved with a steeple, 1878, value 15s. The surplice, hood, and ' Stole, which were stolen on the same occasion as the above, and were des- cribed in last Hue- and- Cry, have been recovered, having been found in a neighbouring field. Gort, December 30, 1885. ( 70605 o.— 22201.) Martin Folan ( assault endangering life), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 19th September, 1884. Mary Bligh, alias Lynch, native of Ballymoe, who disappeared from her home, in the barony of Bally- moe, parish of Drumatemple, on or about the 9th January, 1884, has not been since heard of; Hue- and- Cry, 28th March, 1884. Patrick Killeen ( assault), not arrested; Hue- and- Ory, 29th April, 1884. Martin Coleman ( sending threatening letters), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 1st April, 1884. Kerry. DESCRIPTION of five persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 29th September, 1885, in the barony of Corkaguiney, parish of Killiney, been five of a party of armed and disguised moonlighters who entered the house of Jeremiah Scanlan, of Maghera- beg, and did forcibly take therefrom a single barrel gun with some powder and shot:— 1. Mask on face, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 25 years of age; wore a tall hat, white shirt over coat, leggings up to his knees. 2. Mask on face, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age; wore a low soft hat, white shirt over coat 3. Mask on face, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 26 years of age ; wore a low black soft hat, white shirt over coat. 4. Mask on face, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 23 years of age; wore a low soft felt hat, white shirt over coat. 5. Mask on face, 5 feet high, about 16 years of age; wore a low soft felt hat, white shirt over coat Description of the gun:— An old single- barrelled gun, with a crack on the stock, one of the keepers for ramrod missing ( middle one) ; value for about £ 1. DESCRIPTION of four persons, names unknown, supposed natives of Keel or Lack, near Castlemaine, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 26th and morning of the 27th September, 1885, in the barony of Corkaguiny, parishes of Kilgobbin and Killiney, in company with other armed and disguised THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1885. • moonlighters, numbering about fourteen or fifteen, feloniously attacked the houses of seventeen farmers, and forcibly carried away therefrom various sums of move?, a single barrelled muzzle- loading Enfield Rifle & c., and attempted to swear some of the farmers against paying rent:— 1. " The Captain," small slight man, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 20 years of age, long false whiskers ( t? ray) down to his waist; wore a slouched hat, long oiled coat. 2. Stout maD, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 28 years of age ; wore a woman's black straw bonnet, brown sack coat, brown trowsers thread- bare. 3. Face painted with black and yellow streaks downwards, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 26 or 27 years of age; wore a black soft wide- awake hat, gray tweed suit, carried two guns, one being that taken from Mr. Daniel Griffin, during the raid. 4. Very tall and straight, masked face, medium make, 6 feet high, about 27 years of age; wore a red handkerchie? over face, long brown tweed over- coat. Each of the four carried a double barrelled gun, a pouch and cross belt, and carried revolvers in inside pocket of their coats. The other eleven remained outside the houses, no description can be given, save that all carried double barrelled guns. Dingle, October 1, 1885. ( 70684 c.— 22255.) DESCRIPTION of a fowling piece, a briar- root pipe' and a powder flask, the property of Daniel Griffin, of Coole, in the parish of Kilgobbin, barony of Corkaguiny, forcibly carried away by a party of about fifteen armed and disguised moonlighters, from his dwelling- house, on the night of the 2Rth September, 1885 ;— A single barrel muzzle- loading fowling piece, very much neglected; the figure " 2" marked on stock; sighted as a rifle; value for £ 2 10s. A briar- root tobacco pipe, marked with the letters " G. B. D." near the head, and which are much obliterated ; amber mouth- piece, the top of which is broken off; value for 3s. The two persons, names and native places un- known, charged with having assaulted Michael Corcoran, and described ^ in the Hue- and- Cry of the 19th of June last, have " not been arrested. Five persons, names and native places un- known, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 18th April, 1885,' in the barony of Corkaguiny, parish of Ballinorker, attacked the dwelling- houses of John Cruickshank, Inch, and Daniel Daly, Caherpierce, and taken therefrom six guns, and also with seriously assaulting John Cruick- shank on the same occasion by inflicting four cuts on his head with the stock of a gun, & c., have not been arrested, nor the arms recovered; Hue and- Cry, 24th April, 1885. DESCRIPTION of a watch, the property of Thomas Griffith, which was stolen from his person, on the night of the I5th- 16th August, 1885, at Freshford, in the parish of Freshford, barony of Cranagh:— A silver lever watch, No. believed to be 15301, maker " Hanly," or" Hanlon," not capped, dial plate cracked, portion of second hand broken off, suspected to have been pawned by Costello, who has been arrested, in Dublin, Wicklow, or adjoining counties. DESCRIPTION of Henry Byron, native of Athlone, and James Black, native of Dublin, two soldiers, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 16th or morning of the 17th September, 1885, in the barony of Ballybritt, parish of Birr, did feloniously steal out of the military barrack room, one silver Geneva watch, open face, No. 28468, and chain ; two white calico shirts, No. 555 ; one pair regimental boots, No. 1081 ; one razor, No. 1081 ; one and a half pair gray military socks, No. 1081; one towel, No. 1081 ; two gray military flannel shirts, No, 1081 ; and one pair of elastic- side boots, nearly new, the property of Corporal D, Dowling and Privates William Dunne and S. Ralahan:— 1. Vaccination marks, one on right and two on' left arms, blue_ eyes, regular nose, ruddy complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 1\ inches high, about 24 years of age, light brown hair; wore a military uniform. 2. Scar over right eyebrow, two scars on left jaw, " Mary" on right fore- arm, gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 5J inches high, about 20 years of age, brown hair ; wore a military uniform. Four men, names and native places unknown, ( who stand charged with having, on the 4th of May, 1885, in the barony of Drumahaire, parish of Drumreilly, been of a party of five armed men, who forcibly entered the dwelling- house of Patrick M'Morrow, of Fahy, threatened the inmates, and seized and carried away a gun), described in the Hue- and- Cry, of the 12th of May, not arrested. John M'Morrow, who stands charged with having, on the 13th May, 1885, ( failed to appear at Dowra Petty Sessions, to give evidence in a case of house attack by an armed party and robbery of arms, as bound by his recognizance), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. Limerick. DESCRIPTION of Frederick F. Featherstone, who stands charged with having within the last twelve months, in the borough of Limerick, parish of St. Michael's and elsewhere, embezzled the sum of £ 27 7s. 10d., the property of his employer, Robert Hanna, of George street, city of Limerick, Mer- chant :— Hands covered over with warts, dark eyes, slightly cocked nose, sallow complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair; wore a low hard hat, short tweed coat, striped tweed trowsers, tweed vest, and short dust- coat; his parents reside at 63, Lower- road, city of Cork; is a commercial traveller. Description of the ass :— A black gelding ass, white nose and belly, no shoes, off- hind hoof much worn, spot without hair on right breast, and hair off neck at top strap of collar ; value for £ 2. DESCRIPTION of Laurence Raleigh, native of Suir ville, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 20th September, 1885, in the barony of Clanwilliam, parish of Athassell and Rellickmurry, been one of a party who did feloniously attack the dwelling- house of Edmond Bermingham, at Athassell Abbey, Golden, in the county of Tipperary :— Walks erect, may have a cut mark on one of his ears, smart appearance, beard and side whiskers cut short; brown eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, full face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 26 years of age, curled sandy hair ; wore a black jerry hat, gray tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer.
