THE Police Gazette, HUE- AND- Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover, addressed to the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, authenticated by a Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. * * Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this information it is almost impossible to rectify the mistake. MANCHESTER CITY POLICE. / PARTICULARS of John Thomas Houghton, who absconded on the 5 th instant, changed with forgery 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ( turning gray), dark brown eyes, high fcrehead, long features, thin- jawed, slightly bowlegged, sharp walker, and has a peculiar twitch in his eyes when laughing. Dress— mixture tweed suit, reefer jacket, light brown overcoat, steel watch guard and compass appendage. Had in his possession a black leather portmanteau and brown leather hat- box. Warrant issued. The man who gave the name of " S. Saunders " ( bank forgery), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 27th March, 1885. Drancourt ( embezzle- ment), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. servitude for theft, of which he was convicted at Belfast Assizes. Was accompanied by two men of the following description, viz:— :•! • 1st A man about 36 or 38: years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender made, reddish moustache, no beard or whiskers, English accent, dressed in a black coat and felt hat 9 - • 2nd. A man about 84 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout made, black beard, whiskers, and moustache, and wearing a light drab overcoat, short make. The above reward is offered by Mr. Semple to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension aihd conviction of the thieves and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount of property recovered. WHEREAS on the night of the 5th of September Current, the sale- room, occupied by Mr. Walter Semple, Jeweller, St. Enoch's- lane, 145, Argyle street. in this City, was entered by means of false keys, and after forcing open two safes with a power ful crowbar, a large number of gold and silver watches, jewellery, & o— described in information from this office on 7th inst.— were stolen and carried away. And whereas a Sheriff's Warrant has been granted lor the arrest of James Muirhead, for being con- cerned in the above housebreaking and theft, and who is described as being from 38 to 40 years of age ( looks younger), 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, sandy hair, inclined to be curly, light moustache, otherwise clean shaved, sqtiare shoulders, rather broad, slightly pock- pitted, longish thin face ; dressed in dark tweed suit and felt hat; sharp in his movements ; a native of Edinburgh, speaks with English accent, having • for a considerable time past been resident in London but occasionally uses the Scotch dialect; is a betting man, and frequents race meetings, is also known as a " pawn sticker" arid dealer in jewellery; was liberated on license from Lusk Prison on 9th November, 1882, where he underwent 5 years' penal CITY OF GLASGOW POLICE. £ 100 REWARD. ON the afternoon or night of the 5th, or morning of the 6th September, current, the sale- room occupied by Mr. Walter Semple, Jeweller, St. Enoch's- Iane, 145, Argyle- street ( two flight of stairs up), in this city, was broken iitto by false keys. One large gold brooch, with diamonds forming star in centre. 200 gold brooches, different patterns, new ajwl second- hand, from 9 to 15 carat. About 500 Scotch pearls, unset, some very large. About 100 sets of gold studs, some plain, others set with stones, from 9 to 18 carat, now and second- hand. About 80 silver Albert chains, different patterns, all new. About 40 silver medals, Glasgow jua. ke, new, some with chased borders. About 200 gent's gold scarf- pins and rings, some set with diamonds, emeralds, pearls, rubies, opal, cameo, and corals. About 50 old gold coins, various, some of them James VI., sword and sceptre, one of William and Mary, and some spade and Club guineas. Two gold coins, 3rd of guinea of Georgo III. One crookston dollar of Mary Queen of Scots. One gold medal of Oliver Cromwell. Several Greek and Roman coins. About 100 carat of unset diamonds, various sizes. Five quarter guineas. The different sections of the crowbar when joined together measures about 6 feet. o The above reward is offered by Mr. Semple to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviotion of the thieves and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount of property recovered. THE POLICE GAZETTE, OS HUE- AND- CRY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1885. 4 STOLEN in... j£ yr, during the last ten weeks, a hammerless breechloading 12- bore double- barrelled gun. Makers," Williams & Powell, Liverpool. Eight barrel, modified choke; left, cylindrical; top snap actions, with fittings, viz:— Cartridge loading machine, powder and shot measures, screw drivers, and gun cleaners ( 2). The gun is very short in the barrels, and unusually * light, only weighing lbs.; value £ 40. Police Constables are requested to search for said stolen gun, to apprehend any against whom guilt appears, and communicate with D. M'DONALD, Superintendent. Police Chambers, Ayr, September 19, 1885. George Simpson, alias Kerr, miner or pit sinker, native of Lanarkshire, from 32 to 35 years of age ( robbery of jewellery and clothing), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 7th April, 1885. Licence- holder G 970, Alfred Evans, alias Tommy Good- for- Nothing ( failing to report), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. ( 29777 m.— 55205.) • DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Patrick Myles, A290, convicted in Dublin, at Commission, on 9th June, 1881, for housebreaking, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude :— 25 years of age on con- viction, single, prison trade shoemaker; born in Limerick city ; resident before conviction in Church- street, Dublin : dark brown hair, brown eyes, black eyebrows, regular nose, piediupj mouth, fresh com- plexion, round visage, stout mkke, 5 feet 8 inches high; butterfly, anchor, and woman on left forearm, and cross on right, boil marks on neck. This man was released from Lusk Prison on licence, 28th July, 1885, and went to reside at No. 4, Lower Cumberland street, Dublin, which place he has left, without notifying same to the Metropolitan Police, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, September 14,1885. ( 31204 M.— 58432.) DESCRIPTION of John James Moriarty, late a con- fidential runner in the Hibernian Bank, Dublin, who is wanted on Warrant here, for that he did, on the 29th August, 1885, unlawfully abscond and feloniously steal the sum of £ 2,891 lis. \ 0d. sterling, the money, and property of the said Bank:— 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, florid complexion, fair hair, no beard, whiskers, or moustache, blue eyes, walks erect; dressed in ( supposed) yellowish tweed suit, and low brown jerry hat. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM RE^ DY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest WILLIAM REDDY, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G Division, September 3, 1885. DESCRIPTION of Robert Farquharson, Joint Manager of the Munster Bank Dublin, and Agent for the Royal Exchange Assurance Company, Dublin, who disappeared from his residence about mid- day, on the 28th instant, and absconded from his office, leaving his accounts in an. unsatisfactory state:— He is about 40 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, dark beard, whiskers, and' moustache, slightly tinged with gray, dark fresh complexion, good dark sparkling eyes, prominent teeth, average build, walks with a stoop, dressed in gentlemanly style, generally wears a silk hat; is a native of Scotland. He is suspected of having embezzled over £ 10,000, property of the said Bank. « Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. Superintendent's Office, G Division, July 30, 1885. ( 30961 M.— 58003 ) In the above case the Liquidators of the Munster Bank ( Limited) will pay a reward of £ 500 for the arrest of the said Robert Farquharson, on his being delivered up to the Gaol Authorities in Dublin. Convict Thomas Boyle, described in Hue- and- Cry of 31st July, 1885; not arrested. ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY. Antrim. DESCRIPTION of Richard Mayes and James Watson, natives of Lisburn, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 5th September, 1885, in the barony of Upper Massareene, parish of Blaris, com- mitted a rape:— 1. Slovenly gait, large hands and feet, low fore- head, two broad front teeth; gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, full face, very stout make, 6 feet 9 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a dark frock coat, gray trowsers, and dark vest; is a carter. 2. Freckled face, walks erect; brown eyes, long nose, dark complexion, round face, very stout make, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark hair; wore a black frock coat, dark striped trowsers and vest; is a mill worker. Lisburn, Sept. 11, 1885. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 2lst August, 1885, absconded from the Malone Reformatory School at Belfast:— Andrew G. Armstrong, 16 years of age, dark hair, light blue eyes, fresh complexion, oval visage, stout make, 5 feet 3 inches high, blue mark on back of left hand, bruise above left eye ; is a painter, & c.; his parents reside at 18, College- street, South, Belfast; has friends at Clenumphrey, near Magheraveely, near Dress worn by juvenile when he' absconded— Black tweed tunic and trowsers, blue cloth Glen- garry cap, blue striped shirt, red and black checked tie, " nailed Blucher boots, and woollen stockings. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expenses of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with XL Office of Reformatories, August 31, 1885. Cunningham, which were described in the Hue- and- Ory of the 29th of last May, have not been recovered. Carlow. Michael Doyle ( charged with having feloniously obtained a letter from the Post Office, Carlow, the property of James Carey), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 28th October, 1884. Cavan. Thomas Young ( homicide), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. James Murtagh ( robbery of money), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 13th March, 1885. Cork. DESCRIPTION of John Reilly ( mother's surname Cullinane), native of Enoughter- Golun, who stands charged with having, on the 14th August, 1885, in the barony of West Division West Carbery, parish of Kilmore, committed an indecent assault on a girl, aged eighteen years :— No particular marks, but has a wild appearance, dark eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, regular face, active make, 5 feet 11 inches high, about 27 years of age, dark hair; wore a soft black hat, black coat, gray trowsers, and dark Vest; is a small farmer. ( 70071 c.— 21400.) \ DESCRIPTION of John Neill, native of Filane East, who stands charged with having, on the 24th July, 1885, in the barony of Bere, parish of Kilaconnenagh, seriously assaulted Eliza Sullivan by hitting her with a stone on the head, thereby endangering her life :— Gray or blue eyes, short thick nose, fresh complexion, round full face, verv stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark brown hair, wore a low soft hat, dark coat, bright trowsers, and dark vest; is a farmer's son. John Sullivan ( alias Hunt) ( serious assault), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 1st May, 1885. Donegal. DESCRIPTION of Henry Kerrigan, native of Ballinar- carrick, who stands charged with having, pn the 5 th day of September, 1885, in the barony of Terhugh, parish of Innismacsaint, committed a serious assault on William Kenny, thereby causing his life to be in imminent danger:— Fresh cut on forehead, square shoulders, black eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 8 eight inches high, about 35 years of age, black hair; wore a round black hat, long blue coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a small farmer. DESCRIPTION of jewellery, the property of the late Captain Edward Barton, which was stolen between the 23rd December, 1884, and 15th April, 1885:— A diamond ring, value about £ 130— stone a large diamond, set round with row of small diamonds; antique gold ring— signet portion a hexagonal- shaped stone, with letters g I (?), sur- rounded by wreath, engraved on surface; antique ring of thin gold— signet portion ( modern) a large oval blue- tinted stone; a piece of Danish Ring- money. DESCRIPTION of a surplice, a Master of Art's hood, a stole, and an alms plate, the property of the Hon. Archdeacon Daly, which were stolen from the Protestant Church of Gort, parish of Kiltartan, barony of Kiltartan, on some date between the 22nd and 25th of September, 1885:— A white linen surplice, value £ 2 2s.; a Master of Art's hood, blue silk, value £ 2 108. ;/ a stole of black corded silk, value £ 1; an alms plate of brass, circular, about 10 inches diameter, stamped with a steeple, dated 1878, value £ 1. Mary Bligh, alias Lynch, native of Ballymoe, who disappeared from her home, in the barony of Bally- moe, parish of Drumatemple, on or about the' 9th January, 1884, has not been since heard of; Hue- and- Cry, 28th March, 1884. Patrick Killeen ( assault), not arrested; Hue- and- Ory, 29th April, 1884. Martin Coleman ( sending threatening letters), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 1st April, 1884. Kerry. The two persons, names and native places un- known, charged with having assaulted Michael Corcoran, and described in the Hue- and- Cry of the 19th of June last, have not been arrested. Five persons, names and native places un- known, who stand charged with having, on night of the 18th April, 1885, in the barony of Corkaguiny, parish of Ballinorker, attacked the dwelling- houses of John Cruickshank, Inch, and Daniel Daly, Caherpierce, and taken therefrom six guns, and also with seriously assaulting John Cruick- shank on the same occasion by inflicting four cuts on THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1885. his head with the stock of a gun, & c., have not been arrested, nor the arms recovered; Hue and- Cry, 24th April, 1885. King's DESCRIPTION of Henry Byron, native of Athlone, and James Black, native of Dublin, two soldiers, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 16th or morning of the 17th September, 1885, in the barony of Ballybritt, parish of Birr, did feloniously steal out of tbe military barrack room, one silver Geneva watch, open face, No. 28468, and chain ; two white calico shirts, No. 555 ; one pair regimental boots, No. 1081; one razor, No. 1081; one and a half pair gray military socks, No. 1081; one towel, No. 1081; two gray military flannel shirts, No. 1081 ;' and one pair of elastic- side boots, nearly new, the property of Corporal D, Dowling and Privates William Dunne and S. Ralahan:— 1. Vaccination marks, one on right and two on'left arms, blue eyes, regular nose, ruddy complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 7J inches high, about 24 years of age, light brown hair; wore a military uniform. 2. Scar over right eyebrow, two scars on left jaw, " Mary " on right fore- arm, gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 51 inches high, about 20 years of age, brown hair; wore a military uniform. DESCRIPTION of clothing, the property of Dora Hyland, which Were stolen out of her dwelling- house at Derrygrogan, parish of Ballycommon, barony of Phillipstown Lower, on 13th September, 1885, viz.:— One brown tweed Ulster cloak, one brown stocken- knitted jacket, one black cloth jacket, one pair of elastic- side boots, a black satin petticoat, two white petticoats, a black cassimere dress, thirteen yards of muslin, straw colour with blue spots, a red plush hat, a large yellow tie, two calico sheets, and one bolster cover. Four men, names and native places unknown, ( who stand charged with having, on the 4th of May, 1885, in the barony of Drumahaire, parish of Drumreilly, been of a party of five armed men, who forcibly entered the dwelling- house of Patrick M'Morrow, of Fahy, threatened the inmates, and seized and carried away a gun), described in the Hue- and- Cry, of the 12th of May, not arrested. John M'Morrow, who stands charged with having, on the 13th May, 1885, ( failed to appear at Dowra Petty Sessions, to give evidence in a case of house attack by an armed party and robbery of arms, as bound by his recognizance), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. Featherstone, who stands charged with having within the last twelve months, in the borough of Limerick, parish of St. Michael's and elsewhere, embezzled the sum of £ 27 7s. 10d„ the property of his employer, Robert anna, of George- street, city of Limerick, Mer- nt:— Hands covered over with warts, dark eyes, slightly cocked nose, sallow complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair; wore a low hard hat, short tweed coat, striped tweed trowsers, tweed vest, and short dust- coat; his parents reside at 63, Lower- road, city of Cork ; is a commercial traveller. DESCRIPTION of a watch and chain, the property of Colonel Hatchell, King's Royal Rifles, and also of wearing apparel, stolen from the Officers' Quarters, on 4th September, 1885. The watch and chain were taken from the Colonel's quarters, in the borough of Limerick, and parish of St. Michael's, viz.:— Gold half- hunter watch, with monogram " G. H." on back, and gold Albert chain ( link pattern); watch value for £ 10; chain value for £ 3; six linen collars, marked in ink " O. S. M. Nugent," the property of Lieutenant Nugent; one long overcoat, of coarse woollen material, gray, yellow, black, and red spots intermingled, five buttons round the collar for putting on a hood, which was not taken ; three pairs of gray drawers, marked " E. S. St A.;" three white under- shirts, of a silky cotton material, marked under breast with " E. S. St. A.," the property of Lieutenant St. Aybun; one shirt ( linen), marked on breast " N. B.;" ten pairs of socks, fine woollen, brown colour, marked on legs " N. B. DESCRIPTION of Laurence Raleigh, native of Suir- ville, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 20th September, 1885, in the barony of Clanwilliam, parish of Athassell and Rellickmurry, been one of a party who did feloniously attack the dwelling- house of Edmond Bermingham, at Athassell Abbey, Golden, in the county of Tipperary :— Walks erect, may have a cut mark on one of his ears, smart- appearance, beard and side whiskers cut short; brown eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, full face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 26 years of age, curled sandy hair; wore a black jerry hat, gray tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Catherine Prender- gast, convicted at Boyle, county Roscommon, at the Hilary Sessions, on the 13th January, 1879, for felony and previous conviction, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude and 2 years' Police supervi- sion :— 70 years of age, is married, is a dealer, prison trade sempstress, born at Claremorris, where she resided before conviction; her friends reside in county Mayo; gray hair, gray eyes, dark eyebrows, long and thick nose, large mouth, fresh complexion, long visage, slight make, 5 feet and a- half inch high; cut on right eyebrow, lost front teeth. This woman was released on licence from Grange- gorman Prison, on 23rd June, 1884, and went to Claremorris. She left Claremorris on the 20th ult. stating she was going to Knock, but she has not reported herself at the latter place, and her present whereabouts is unknown.
