IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. The Editor desires to call attention to the fact that all photographs of prisoners in custody, trans- mitted to the Convict Branch of the Metropoli- tan Police Office, for purposes of identification, are seen by the police and warders who visit all prisoners under remand, in the Metropolitan Police District three times a week. This system, esta- blished in 1879, has been the means of ascertaining the previous convictions of 7000 prisoners, and affords great facilities to Chief Officers of Police, and the Governors of Her Majesty's Prisons. Such photographs are also compared with the albums in the Convict Office con- taining the portraits of all Convicts liberated in the Kingdom, which are further open to the personal examination of any police officer or warder. IDENTIFICATION OF UNCLAIMED BODIES. The attention of the Editor has been directed to the want of any system existing for the publication of descriptions of dead bodies coming into the hands of Police, and which are buried without having been iden- tified. It having been suggested that the particulars should be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, the Editor will be glad to print any information whicb it may be considered desirable to publish. " God is mighty, and He showeth them their work and their transgressions that they have exceeded- He openeth their ear to discipline, and commandeth them that they return from their iniquity."— Job xxxvi. 9. There are five good reasons for obeying this command. 1. " Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee."— Psalm cxvi. 7. 2. " Return unto Me, for I have redeemed thee." — Isaiah xliv. 22. 3. " Return, for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever."— Jer. iii. 12. 4. " Come and let us return unto the Lord, for He hath torn, and He will heal us ; He hath smitten, and He will bind us up." — Hosea vi. 1. 5. " O Israel " ( He calls the wanderer by the name which He had given him), " return unto the Lord thy God, for thou hast fallen by tliine iniquity."— Hosea xiv. 1. Because of the very thing which seemed the barrier! Return to Him whose special treasure you are ( Psalm exxxv. 4); who says, " How shall I give thee up?" ( Hosea xi. 8); and " Return noiv" ( Jer. xviii. 11); and then listen ! " If thou return to the Almighty thou shalt be built up ... . thou shalt put away iniquity far ... . the Almighty shall be thy defence .... thou shalt have thy delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up thy face unto God .... thou shalt make thy prayer unto Him and He shall answer thee .... the light shall shine upon thy ways . . . when men are cast down, then thou shalt say there is lifting up; and shall save the humble person." — Job xxii.
