THE Police Gazette, OR HUE- AND- CRY. Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover, addressed to the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, authenticated by a Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. %* Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this information it is almost impossible to rectify the mistake. * Prison and Police Authorities are requested to be good enough to inform the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Hue- and- Cry " no longer necessary. DUBLIN, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1885. ENGLISH POLICE. MANCHESTER CITY POLICE. £ 20 REWARD. WANTED by Warrant, for stealing £ 127 from a dwelling- house in this city, between 10 and 11 a. m., on the 5th September, 1885, Antonio Mortenega:— 36 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark com- plexion, no whiskers, small black moustache, cut mark on bridge of nose, dressed in a black velvet jacket, dark trowsers, billycock hat, and lace- up boot?. Absconded on the 5th inst., in company with Carlo Bombarni:— 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, dark complexion, and dressed in dark clothes. The above reward will be paid by Dominic Merlino, 92, Foundry- street, Manchester, for the apprehension of the above- named Antonio Mortenega, and recovery of the stolen money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. It is requested that careful search and inquiry be made at Shipping Offices, & c., and any information obtained forwarded to the Chief Constable of Man- chester, who holds a Warrant for his apprehension. MANCHESTER CITY POLICE. PARTICULARS of John Thomas Houghton, who absconded on the 5th instant, charged with forgery :— 34 years of agp, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ( turning gray), • dark brown eyes, high forehead, lor. g features, thin- jawed, slightly bowlegged, sharp walker, and has a peculiar twitch in his eyes when laughing. Dress— mixture tweed suit, reefer jacket, light brown overcoat, vsteel watch guard and compass appendage. Had in his possession a black leather portmanteau and brown leather hat- box. Warrant issued. WANTED in this borough, under Warrant for embezzlement:— William Brookes, 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, brown hair, sandy whiskers meeting under the chin, and moustache, rather florid complexion ; has scar of a cut under the right eye; inclined to be stout; dressed when he left here on Monday, 17th instant, in a soft black billycock hat, stone- coloured jacket and vest, small dark plaid trowsers, lace- up . boots. The above man has been employed* as an Agent by Singer's Sewing Machine Company, and it is expected he will endeavour to emigrate. Please cause every inquiry to be made at Shipping Offices, and < > t, her likely places, and if found, arrest, and wire, when an officer shall be sent for him. Information to G. WANTED at Kendal, charged with leaving his wife and family chargeable to the common fund of the Kendal Union, and who absconded on t^ e 22nd August, 1885, and tor whose apprehension a Warrant has been issued:— Thomas Hughes, alias Thomas Enney, hawker, late of 14, S - van- street, Ulverston ; about 35 years of age, ( lin ks oi ler), about 5 feet 10 inches or 5 feet 11 inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, dark I r , wn hair, whisners generally si avt d off, ' feupposfti sightly pock pitted; fcvery smart and active; he is will known in North Lancnshiretmd West Riding of Y rkshire. Dressed in a dark blue cloth shooting- coat and vest, moleskin trowsers, black soft billycock hat, and lace- up boots; supposed to have a black mare with him. ( 31132 jr.— 58317.) Bradley Haverstoe Association for the Prosecution of Felons. 20 GUINEAS REWARD. WHEREAS, between the 1st April and the 16th July last, some person or persons did feloniously steal and carry away four old and valuable oil paintings from Weelsby House, near Great Grimsby, viz i— A sea- side scene on the Dutch Coast, with a wreck, and women in short dresses ; in size, 3 feet wide by 18 inches deep, and in a carved oak gilded frame. A landscape, showing a road, Louse, and trees; about 2 feet 10 inches square; in a gilt frame. Two others, " Morning" and " Evening," each 2feet deep by 16 inches wide, with gilt moulded frames. Notice is hereby given, that the above reward will be paid to any person or persons who shall give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, that is to say :—£ 10 ) 0s. from Alexander W. WANTED here on a charge of theft, John Brown : — A labourer, or jobbing clock and watch cleaner, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 4f inchcs in height, fre- b complexion, brown hair, dark brown side whiskers and moustache, shaven on chin, gray sunken eyes, slender make; a member of Ayr and Wigtown Militia; said to be a native of Dalry, A\ - hire; Wore a light tweed suit, military boots, bin k felt hat, white militia shirt, but may possibly bt wenring a black corded suit, which he took with hi He left this on the 25th inst., taking with liirn t 16 hereafter described watches, which he got to repair and regulate from different parties at different times during the last four weeks, viz. :— A silver lever watch, No. unknown. C. Reid scratched on cape ; a silver Geneva watch, No. 6153 ; a silver Geneva watch, thinks No. 987 or 978; a silver keyless watch. ESCAPED from custody on the 21st instant ( while being exhibited in Glasgow, for the purpose of identification, & c.), charged with theft, and previous conviction ;— John Heron, alias James Hetherington, a native of Glasgow ; 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high ; a ship steward, formerly a boots and billiard marker in Hotels in Glasgow ; swarthy complexion, dark hair, gray eyes, two moles on right side of neck, and a hole ( boil mark) on right cheek. Dressed in a blue serge jacket, vest, and trowsers ( brass button on vest), blue cap, with peak, and light elastic- sided boots; spoke with a Scotch accent, and has a smart appearance. He is well known to the Glasgow Police. Information to Chief Constable M'HARDY, Dum- barton, by whom the above Reward will be paid for his apprehension. County Police Office, Dumbarton, 24th August, 1885. ( 31101 M.— 58267.) COUNTY OF LANARK. STOLEN by means of housebreaking during the night of 14th and morning of 15th August, 1885, from Langmuir store, in this county. Entrance effected by wrenching the padlocks off the grocery and public- house doors:— Twenty- one shillings in copper, consisting of pence, halfpence, and one shilling in farthings. Fourteen pairs of boots, consisting of 12 pairs of men's and boys', having tackets; heel and toe- plates of various sizes; value from 3s. to 9s. per pair; and 2 pairs of> ladies' elastic- sided, value 6s. per pair. Two pairs of men's Lome shoes, plain soles; sizes 6 and 7; value 7s. 6d. per pair. A gray melton cloth overcoat^ lined with gray lining, one inside pocket in left breast, three outside pockets with flaps, cloth- covered buttons to match, four or five rows of stitching on cuffs ; well worn, and the collar greasy. A dark tweed cloth vest, with red tick throughout, black plain composition buttons, red and white striped lining, three outside pockets ; in good condition. A roll of tobacco, weighing 5 lbs., of best black small twist. Two clear quart bottles of whiskey, one having label " Mitchell's Old Irish Whiskey," with crown surrounded by Shamrock and Thistle, the other " Argyle Highland Whiskey," with view of Inverary and Pier; underneath, Whitelaw and Weir, Glasgow, proprietors. RENFREWSHIRE CONSTABULARY. Philip Lynch ( homicide), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 80th June, 1885. George Simpson, alias Kerr, miner or pit sinker, native of Lanarkshire, from 32 to 35 years of age ( robbery of jewellery and clothing), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 7th April, 1885. Licence- holder G 970, Alfred Evans, alias Tommy Good- for- Nothing ( failing to report), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. ( 29777 M.— 55205.) DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Patrick Myles, A290, convicted in Dublin, at Commission, on 9th June, 1881, for housebreaking, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude:— 25 years of age on con- viction, single, prison trade shoemaker; born in Limerick city; resident before conviction in Church- street, Duhlin; dark brown hair, brown eyes, black eyebrows, regular nose, medium mouth, fresh com- plexion, round visage, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high; butterfly, anchor, and woman on left forearm, and cross on right, boil marks on neck. This man was released from Lusk Prison on licence, 28th July, 1885, and went to reside at No. 4, Lower Cumberland- street, Dublin, which place he has left, without notifying same to the Metropolitan Police, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 84 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. ( 81204 M.— 58432.) DESCRIPTION of John James Moriarty, late a con- fidential runner in the Hibernian Bank, Dublin, who is wanted on Warrant here, for that he did, on the 29th August, 1885, unlawfully abscond and feloniously steal the sum of £ 2,391 lis. lOd. sterling, the money and property of the said Bank:— 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, florid complexion, fair hair, no beard, whiskers, or moustache, blue eyes, walks erect; dressed in ( supposed) yellowish tweed suit, and low brown jerry hat. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. WILLIAM REDDY, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G Division, September 8, 1885. DESCRIPTION of Robert Farquharson, Joint Manager of the Munster Bank Dublin, and Agent for the Royal Exchange Assurance Company, Dublin, who disappeared from his residence about mid- day, on the 28th instant, and absconded from his office, leaving his accounts in an unsatisfactory state:— He is about 40 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, dark beard, whiskers, and moustache, slightly tinged with gray, dark fresh complexion, good dark sparkling eyes, prominent teeth, average build, walks with a stoop, dressed in gentlemanly style, generally wears a silk hat; is a native of Scotland. He is suspected of having embezzled over £ 10,000, property of the said Bank. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. In the above case the Liquidators of the Munster Bank ( Limited) will pay a reward of £ 500 for the arrest of the said Robert Farquharson, on his being delivered up to the Gaol Authorities in Dublin. Convict Thomas Boyle, described in Hue- and- Cry of 31st July, 1885; not arrested. ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY. Antrim. DESCRIPTION of Richard Mayes and James Watson, natives of Lisburn, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 5th September, 1885, in the barony of Upper Massareene, parish of Blaris, com- mitted a rape:— 1. Slovenly gait, large hands and feet, low fore- head, two broad front teeth ; gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, full face, very stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a dark frock coat, gray trowsers, and dark vest; is a carter. 2. Freckled face, walks erect; brown eyes, long nose, dark complexion, round face, very stout make, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark hair} wore a black frock coat, dark striped trowsers and vest; is a mill worker. Lisburn, Sept. 11, 1885. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 21st August, 1885, absconded from the Malone Reformatory School at Belfast:— Andrew G. Armstrong, 16 years of age, dark hair, light blue eyes, fresh complexion, oval visage, stout make, 5 feet 3 inches high, blue mark on back of left " hand, bruise above left eye; is a painter, & c.; his parents reside at 18, College- street, South, Belfast; has friends at Clenumphrey, near Magheraveely, near Clones. Dress worn by juvenile when he absconded—, Black twe « d tunic and trowsers, blue cloth Glen- garry cap, blue striped shirt, red and black,' checked tie, nailed Blucher boots, and woollen stockings. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expenses of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. The articles of plate, the property of Surgeon- General John P. Michael Doyle ( charged with having feloniously obtained a letter from the Post Office, Carlow, the property of James Carey), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 28th October, 1884. Cavan. Thomas Young ( homicide), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. James Murtagh ( robbery of money), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 13th March, 1885. * Cork. DESCRIPTION of John Reilly ( mother's surname Cullinane), native of Enoughter- Golun, who stands charged with having, on the 14th August, 1885, in the barony of West Division West Carbery, parish of Kilmore, committed an indecent assault on a girl, aged eighteen years :— No particular marks, but has a wild appearance, dark eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, regular face, active make, 5 feet 11 inch's high, about 27 years of age, dark hair; wore a soft black hat, black coat, gray trowsers, and dark vest; is a small farmer. DESCRIPTION of David Lenihan, native of Lisard, who stands charged with having, on the 24th July, 1885, in the barony of Barretts, parish of Grenagh, seriously assaulted Jeremiah Cashman, by fracturing his skull, from the effects of which he died on 7th instant;— Fresh cut mark on upper lip, smart active appearance, gray or blue eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 37 or 40 years of age, dark hair, shaves all his face ; wore a low round hard hat, dark tweed coat, gray trowsers and vest; is a small farmer. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender, who, on the 25th July, 1885, absconded from the St. Patrick's Reformatory School, Upton, county Cork:— Patrick Butler, No. 1,166, 17 years of age, about 4 feet 11 inches high, proportionate make, fresh complexion, brown hair, brown eyes, regular nose, medium mouth, oval visage; formerly belonged to Clonmel; his parents are beggars. The school dress, all with Reformatory Stamp, consists of:— Corduroy trowsers, vest, and tunic, leather belt, Glenagarry cap, leather strapped boots, nailed. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. DESCRIPTION of John Neill, native of Filane East, who stands charged with having, on the 24th July, 1885, in the barony of Bere, parish of Kilaconnenagh, seriously assaulted Eliza Sullivan, by hitting her with a stone on the head, thereby endangering her life :— Gray or blue eyes, short thick nose, fresh complexion, round full face, very stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark brown hair, wore a low soft hat, dark coat, bright trowsers, and dark vest; is a farmer's son. DESCRIPTION of John Campbell, alias Ward, alias Gallagher, native of Loughveen, county Donegal, who stands charged with having, on the 21st July, 1885, in the barony of Boylagh, parish of Inniskeel, stolen a heifer, since recovered. See Hue- and- Cry, dated 81st July, 1885 :— Nose drooped and slightly turned to one side,. stutters, high cheek bones, whiskers recently shaved off, dark complexion, round face, 5 feet 5 inches high ; about 40 years of ajie. Patrick and Kate M'carthy ( charged with having stolen several articles of clothing), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1885. Fermanagh. DESCRIPTION of jewellery, the property of the late Captain Edward Barton, which was stolen between the 23rd December, 1884, and 15th April, 1885:— A diamond ring, value about £ 130— stone a large diamond, set round with row of small diamonds; antique gold ring— signet portion a hexagonal- shaped stone, with letters g I (?), sur- rounded by wreath, engraved on surface; antique ring of thin gold— signet portion ( modern) a large oval blue- tinted stone; a piece of Danish Ring- money. Mary Bligh, alias Lynch, native of Ballymoe, who disappeared from her home, in the barony of Bally- moe, parish of Drumatemple, on or about the 9th January, 1884, has not been since heard of; Hue- and- Cry, 28th March, 1884. Patrick Killeen ( assault), not arrested; Hue- and- Ory, 29th April, 1884. Martin Coleman ( sending threatening letters), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 1st April, 1884. THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1885. Kerry. jJ^ The two persons, names and native places un- known, charged with having assaulted Michael Corcoran, and described in the Hue- and- Cry of the 19th of June last, have not been arrested. Five persons, names and native places un- known, who stand charged with having, on the night of the 18th April, 1885, in the barony of Corkaguiny, parish of Ballinorker, attacked the dwelling- houses of John Cruickshank, Inch, and Daniel Daly, Caherpierce, and taken therefrom six guns, and also with seriously assaulting John Cruick- shank on the same occasion by inflicting four cuts on his head with the stock of a gun, & c., have not been arrested, nor the arms recovered; Hue and- Cry, 24th April, 1885. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Flanagan, native of Royal Oak, who, on the 24th February, 1885, in the barony of Carbury, parish of Ballinadrimna, strayed away from his employer at Moyvally while in a state of insanity, and may do injury to himself:— Pearl on right eye, good- looking, erect carriage ; brown eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, broad face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 27 or 28 years of age, dork hair; wore a felt hat, brown coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. Garret Stynes ( house attack and using threatening language), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 31st October, 1884. Kilkenny. DESOMPTION of a jennett, the property of Thomas Feehan, of Carricketna, which was stolen off his lands, at Carricketna, barony of KeLls, parish of Kilmoganny, on the night of. the 16th or morning of 17th August, 1885, viz:— A gelding jennett, bright bay colour, middle size, tail out short, well shaped, had out marks on knees from a fall, 5 years old ; value for £ 15. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 12th September, 1885, absconded from the Philipstown Reformatory School, King's County:— John Barret, No. 859; 16 years of age, 5 feet 6, inches high, strong make, fresh freckled complexion, brown hair, gray eyes, proportionate nose, regular mouth, oval visage; scar on right temple and on right thumb, has a fresh cut on side of the nose. Formerly belonged to Dungarvan. His parents are dead. The school dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of corduroy trowsers and vest, black Scotch cap, No. 859. Have it on good authority that the absconder changed his coat and boots. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expenses of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. ( 31057 M.— 58473.) Four men, names and native places, unknown, ( who stand charged with having, on the 4th of May, 1885, in the barony of Drumahaire, parish of Drumreilly, been of a party of five armed men, who forcibly entered the dwelling- house of Patrick M'Morrow, of Fahy, threatened the inmates, and seized and carried away a gun), described in the Hue- and- Cry, of the 12th of May, not arrested. John M'Morrow, who stands charged with having, on the 13th May, 1885, ( failed to appear at Dowra Petty Sessions, to give evidence in a case of house attack by an armed party and robbery of arms, as bound by his recognizance), riot arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. Featherstone, who stands charged with having within the last twelve months, in the borough of Limerick, parish of St. Michael's and elsewhere, embezzled the sum of £ 27 It. 10d., the property of his employer, Robert Hanna, of George- street, city of Limerick, Mer- chant :— Hands covered over with warts, dark eyes, slightly cocked nose, sallow complexioo, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair; wore a low hard hat, short tweed coat, striped tweed trowsers, tweed vest, and short dust- coat; his parents reside at 63, Lower- road, citv of Cork ; is a commercial'traveller. DESCRIPTION of a watch and chain, the property of Colonel Hatchell, King's Royal Rifles, and also of wearing apparel, stolen from the Officers' Quarters, on 4th September, 1885. The watch and chain were taken irom the Colonel's quarters, in the borough of Limerick, and parish of St. Michael's, viz.:— Gold half- hunter watch, with monogram " G. H." on back, and gold Albert chain ( link pattern); watch value for .£' 10; chain value for £ 3; six linen collars, marked in ink " O. S. M. Nugent," the property oi Lieutenant Nugent; one long overcoat, of coarse woollen material, gray, yellow, black, and red spots intermingled, five buttons round the collar for putting on a hood, which was not taken; three pairs of gray drawers, marked " E. S. St. A.;" three white under- shirts, of a silky cotton material, marked under breast with " E. S. St. A." the property of Lieutenant St. Aybun; one shirt ( linen), marked on breast " N. B. ;" ten pairs of socks, fine woollen, brown colour, marked on legs " N. B. " in red cotton thread, and numbered in same thread, underneath initials, from 7 to 16, the property of Lieutenant Beddingfield. Limerick, Sept. 8, 1885. ( 70326c.— 21748.) P., Limerick:— Something like burn mark on cheek, brown eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 35 years of age, very red hair and moustache; wore a round jerry hat, tweed coat, trowsers, and vest, all one piece, whichis black and very slightly tinged with gray ; is a clerk. DESCRIPTION of Michael Higgins, native of Tip- perary town, who stands charged with having, on the 1st day of July, 1885, in the barony of Coonagb, parish of Grean, stolen four blinds and two leather window straps from a first class railway carriage, the property of the Waterford and Limerick Railway Company:— Gray eyes, long nose, fair freckled complexion, long face, stout make, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, about 28 years of age, fair hair; wore a round hard hat, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; caretaker recently in the employment of the Land Corporation Company.
