METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 103.— The attention of police is called to proceedings of a person calling herself COMTESSE DE ROSSI. She is a Frenchwoman, but able to correspond in Eng- lish. She writes to noblemen and gentlemen, especially to officers in the Army, representing that she has some- thing of great importance to communicate, and inviting them to a personal interview. From this interview nothing results but a request for money. She studies the announcements of approaching carriages, and writes generally to the lady concerned or her relatives, intimating that she has matter of importance to com- municate which may affect her future life. In short, she is an unprincipled adventuress, whom it is very difficult to bring to account owing to the reluctance of persons, with whom she corresponds, to appear in proceedings against her. Officers of the Army and county families might with advantage be warned against her. 104.— The attention of police is directed to the proceedings of 3 men who represent themselves as the " New Guinea Exploration and Trading Company," and insert advertisements in Scotch newspapers, stating that men are wanted to join an expedition to New Guinea. They generally succeed in obtaining replies from applicants, and forward printed circulars and addressed envelopes from London, stating that on receipt of 12 postage stamps, further particulars will be forwarded. 1st, JOHN McDOUGALL, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, moustache light; dress, black jacket, trousers, and vest, black tie, stand- up collar, hard felt hat, wore large square sleeve- links, apparently set with bloodstone.— 2nd, age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight, complexion fair, moustache light; dress, Scotch tweed check jacket, dark trousers and vest, imitation lace boots, hard felt hat.— 3rd, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., stiff build, complexion pale, hair and mous- tache ( heavy) dark, slightly lame right leg; dress, dark tweed suit, soft felt hat ; carries a cane. Enquiry has been made at the addresses given in London, which are usually small shops where letters are received, and there is good reason to believe that the object of the advertisement is to obtain money by fraud. " For my part, my soul is like a hungry and thirsty child ; and I need His love and consolation for my refreshment. I am a wandering and lost sheep ; and I need Him as a good and faithful Shepherd. My soul is like a frightened dove pursued by a hawk ; and I need His wounds for a refuge. I am a feeble vine ; and I need His Cross to lay hold of, and to wind myself about. I am a sinner ; and I need His righteousness. I am in trouble and alarm ; and I need His solace. I am ignorant ; and I need His teaching ; simple and foolish ; and I need the guidance of His Holy Spirit. In no situation, and at no time, can I do without Him. Do I pray ? He must prompt and intercede for me. Am darraigned by Satan at the Divine tribunal ? He must be my advocate. Am I in affliction ? He must be my helper. Am I persecuted by the world? He must defend me. When I am forsaken, He must be my support; - when I am dying, my life ; when mouldering in the grave, my resurrection. Well then, I will rather part with all the world than with Thee, my Saviour. And. God be thanked ! I know that Thou too art • neither able nor willing to do without me. Thou art rich ; and I am poor. Thou hast abundance ; and I am needy. Thou hast righteousness ; and I sins. Use me then, my Saviour, for whatever purpose, and in whatever way Thou mayest require. Here is my poor heart, an empty vessel ; fill it with Thy grace. Here is my sinful and troubled soul; quicken and refresh it with Thy love. Take my heart for Thine abode ; my mouth to spread the glory of Thy name ; my love and all my power, and never suffer the steadfastness and confidence of my faith to abate, that so at all times I may be enabled from the heart to say, " Jesus needs me, and I Him, and so we suit each other."
