T J E T I E POLICE GAZETTE. PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 17, 1885. VOL. II., No. 162. REGULATIONS- 1. All announcement! for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOK OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GBEAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another Jorce. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15I. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to bt y inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may I:. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to bt apprehendid or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted m the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement far insertion in the next issue 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from tuck publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded to as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one tide of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by m covering letter. 12. All payments mutt be in advance, either at the office. Announcements concerning property lost or per tons misting can only be accepted at adrerti » r~£* ca. + J. Mono, Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. A native of Quere- ferot, Saxony, but speaks good English. Was lately employed as foreign correspondence clerk. Warrant issued. 5— C Division— For obtaining £ 9 15s., by ficti- hension is sought for larceny and embezzling £ 70i aire 22, height 5 ft 7 in., complexion, hair and moustache ( slight) fair, slim build; dress, dark jacket, light trousers, felt hat. Warrant issued. 9.— H Division— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of EMMA REEVE, whose apprehension is sought for stealing, 9th ult, £ 25 gold and silver, a lady's gold Genera watch and albert chain, plain round link pattern ; 2 silver bracelets, 5 rings lone malachite set 9 small diamonds, one plaited African gold, one plain ditto set 5 brilliants, one gold with 3 circles of pearls and small sapphires, one thick silver marked " L. Y. Sentenced at Hants Quarter Sessions to 2 years' hard labour and 3 years' police supervision for fraud. A native of Wymondham, Nor- folk. Is accompanied by MARY, alias MINNIE McBRIDE, age 20, short and slight, hair cut short at back and frizzled on forehead, light; dress, light grey costume, patent leather shoes, white straw hat trimmed maroon velvet, wears a mourning ring " M. CITY OF LONDON, 11.— For embezzlement— FREDERICK CHAPLIN, • ge 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., medium build, com- plexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, short- sighted and wears spectacles, walks quick and erect; dress, brown mixture tweed suit, low black hard felt hat. A clerk. Lately resided at 8, Bonham- road, Brixton- rise, London. Was formerly employed by Messrs. H. Bennett and Co., seed merchants, 25, High- street, Hull. Absconded 8th inst. Warrant issued. C. 12.— For obtaining jewellery to a large amount by fraud— WILLIAM BLUETT, age 39, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark, clean shaved, • walks erect, is a good billiard player; dress, grey dust coat, blue trousers, black hard felt hat; carries an umbrella ; of gentlemanly appearance. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 13.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For uttering a forged will.— HORATIO MUTIMER, a carriage builder, age 40, height 5 ft. in, complexion pale, hair, whiskers and moustache light, eyes blue, oval face, small mole top of shoulder, slight scar on right knee. Was seen in London on Saturday, 4th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Turrall, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 14.— Stockport ( Borough).— For stealing, 16th ult., a pair of men's brown tweed plaid trousers ( worn) lined, 1 pair of men's drab knitted drawers ( two holes in seat), 1 black cloth woman's jacket — WINIFRED SULLIVAN, age 19, height 4 ft. lOi in., slender build, complexion fair, hair ( short) light brown, eyes grey ; dres3, black stuff skirt and jacket, white straw hat, trimmed velvet and beads, white silk neckerchief, button boots. Had a black straw hat in her possession, and may be wearing the stolen jacket. A trade- potter's assistant; native of Hanley, Staffs. Was liberated from Stafford Gaol, 4th May last, after serving twelve months for burglary; has also been convicted at Birmingham and elsewhere. Was discharged from Longsight Industrial School, Manchester, about three years since. Supposed gone to Manchester or Macclesfield, and may be found in common lodging- houses. Photo can be seen on application. 15.— Stockport ( Borough).— Tot stealing, between 8th and 10th inst., a black leather purse, round brass top, containing £ 13 in gold— ELLEN MAUDSLEY, age a'jout 40, very tall and stout, hair dark, burn or king s evil mark on side of neck, large scar on upper jip, bold looking ; dress, black, lace boots ; may have purchased new clothing with the stolen money ; fre- quents common lodging- houses. Stated she belonged to Liverpool, and that her maiden name was " O'Hara " ; talked about the " Dandy Pet" public- house, Liverpool. Information to Lieut.- Col. Staples, Chief Constable, Stockport. CORNWALL, 16.— Truro ( City). — For stealing, 23rd ult., a silver Geneva double- case watch, J. R.," scratched inside case, common brasschain attached, and £ 3 19s. 6d. - WILLIAM SMITH, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 or 5 in, complexion florid, hair ( brushed over forehead) very light, moustache light, teeth Very regular and white dress, blue coat, dark vest, grey trousers, side- spring boots, low hard felt hat. A moulder, fitter and clerk, appeared well educated, and stated he was a native of Leeds. Is in the habit of obtaining food and lodgings under false pretences, by representing himself to be a clerk employed at railway stations and large works. Information to Supt. Angel, Truro. ESSEX. 17.— Brentwood ( County).— For highway robbery and stealing a small Geneva watch, plain dial ( maker's name and number unknown), and about 35s— JAMES COOPER or GASKIN, age about 19, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair, and whiskers ( slight) dark ; dress, brown velvet waistcoat, cord trousers, red muffler, lace boots, black billycock hat.— THOMAS HEDGES or SWAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, no moustache ; dress, dark coat, cord trousers, lace boots, hard felt hat. Both gipsies. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. 18. — W i t h a m ( County). — For embezzlement— THOMAS SAINES, age 27, height about 5 ft. 9 in., stout, complexion fresh, hair and side whiskers ( small) dark, casts his eyes down when spoken to ; dress, dark clothes. A labourer. Has been travelling the county with a roan- coloured entire horse, the property of John Ilutley, Rivenhall. Warrant issued. Information to Sergt. Hewett, Witham. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 19.— Chelten ham ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee MARK BOYLE, Office No. 24310, age 34, height 5 ft. 71 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes light hazel, scars left temple, right eye- brow, left cheek, and bridge of nose, anchor between right thumb and forefinger, D, D. left side. Sentenced at Gloucester on the 7th April, 1880, to 5 years' penal servitude and 3 years' poliee supervision for larceny. Licensed 13th March, 1884. G 328. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. 20.— Fishponds ( County).— For larceny at Hor- field, 3rd inst.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion very dark, hair ( cut short) dark, speaks with a London accent; dress, old brown jacket turning yellow on shoulders, old cord or fustian trousers, Scotch plaid cap, very old boots. May be found at low lodging- houses. Information to Supt. Matthews, Fishponds. HAMPSHIRE. 21.— Winchester ( City).— For stealing a Post- office Savings Bank book, four £ 25 shares Winchester Gas and Water Company, and a lady's long gold chain ( small links)— A WOMAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in , complexion fair, hair sandy, eyes light; dress dark, black hat, trimmed black and brown feathers, button boots, and small striped apron. Information to Head Constable Morton, Winchester. 22.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— lor embezzlement — HERBERT TRIMMEL JENKINS, rate collector, age about 25, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., rather slight but muscular, complexion fresh, hair very light, moustache slight, eyes blue, large mouth, nose slightly turned to one side, lost one front tooth in upper jaw, is a fair bicyclist and oarsman, and fond of company, of respect- able appearance and pleasant manner, but rather harsh voice and laugh. Is supposed to have from £ 100 to £ 200 in his possession, and that he will endeavour to leave the country. Absconded 14th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Portsmouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. 23. — Hertford ( Borough). — For stealing 20s— JANE MCCARTHY, age about 17, height between 4 and 5 ft., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey; dress, black or marone coloured dress, black hat, trimmed black velvet. Is supposed to be accompanied by an umbrella mender, age about 35, pockpitted, who often appears as a comic singer, and plays the tin whistle. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Jarrett, Hertford. KENT. 24.— Dover ( Borough). — For deserting her two children, leaving them chargeable to the Dover Union — MERCY DENNIS, a widow, age 36, medium height, complexion fair, hair dark brown ; dress, dark clothes, shabby appearance. A charwoman ; native of Dover. Warrant issued, 25.— Dover ( Borough).— For deserting his three children, leaving them chargeable to the Dover Union - GEORGE LILLO, age 44. height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair dark, moustache slight, and whiskers ( grown under chin) dark brown ; dress, generally corduroy trousers, billycock hat. A cooper; native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Sanders, Dover. £ 1 REWARD. 26.— Sandwich ( Borough). — For deserting her four children, 29th ult.— ELIZABETH SWAIN, age about 29, height about 5 ft. 6in., complexion fair, hair brown, very small speck in one eye, nose turned up slightly; dress, short black stuff jacket, black dress, white apron, black hat, trimmed black velvet. Maiden name LANCASTER, and her relations are supposed to reside at or near Hastings, St. Leonards, or Eastbourne. Left Sandwich for Hastings 29th ult., and had with her a female child, age about four or five months ; dress, print frock, check turnover ( same as is usually worn in workhouses), white satin hat. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by F. S. Cloke, Esq., Clerk to the Union Authorities, for her apprehension. Information to Chief Constable Page, Sandwich. LANCASHIRE. 27.— Kirkham ( County).— For stealing from the officers' quarters, Euston Barracks, Fleetwood, £ 1 in silver and a pair of dark brown- and- green check tweed trousers— JOHN MORRIS, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair ( cut short) and moustache sandy ; dress, light grey mixture coat and vest, stolen trou- sers, blucher boots, black billycock hat. A native of London ; has been in the army for six years. Information to Supt. Stafford, Kirkham. 28.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst., at Withington, a woman's black worsted stuff dress, trimmed black crape, and lined slate- colour calico ; 1 puce petticoat, black- and- white striped, one tuck with black braid round bottom ; 1 red- and- white counterpane, flowered pattern ; 1 grey shawl, red striped border; 1 pepper- and- salt coloured ditto, with fringe ; 1 white calico chemise, edging round neck and arms; 1 grey flannel petticoat, small patch on skirt— EMMA HALL, a prostitute, age about 21, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight, complexion pale, hair ( cut short in front) black ; dress, dark grey alpaca dress, old grey shawl, white apron, wore clogs. Was last seen going in the direction of Manchester. 29.— Old Trafford ( County). — For stealing a horse, 6th inst., at Pomona Gardens, Stretford— WILLIAM GARDNER, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache slight ( sandy), rather long thin face ; dress, dark grey tweed coat, snuff- colour trousers ( tight fitting), black billy- cock hat. May seek employment as cab or omnibus driver at Blackpool, Southport, or New Brighton. ? 0.— Old Trafford ( County).— For deserting wife and family— JOHN FERRY, age 43, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sunburnt; dress, black coat, moleskin trousers. A labourer ; generally works at brick crofts and gasworks. Warrant issued. 31.— Old Trafford ( County).— For embezzlement at Bradford, 22nd May last— CORNELIUS WAR- BURTON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, full features, hair ( bald on top) brown. His wife keeps the New Inn, Tulshaw, near Wilmslow. Warrant issued. 32.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing pro- perty described in case No. 98, 26th ult., and 1 gold ring set blood stone, which opens, showing photo of a lady ; a gold pencil case, rather bent and repaired with inferior metal, stone at top, small ring attached; 1 silver albert, cable pattern, silver tassel at end, and a gold brooch set small pearls— A MAN, gave the name of RICHARD TOFT, of Plague or Prague Street, Knutsford, Cheshire, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, whiskers and moustache sandy, full features ; dress, dark suit and high hat. He pledged a marble clock 19th ult. at Mr. Jackson's, Oxford Road, Manchester. £ 2 REWARD. 33 Old Trafford ( County).— For embezzlement. — MARY COLDBECK, late of 55, Bradshaw Street, Moss Side, age about 45, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., com- plexion sallow, hair ( parted at side) and eyes dark, walks lame from rheumatism ; dressed ( generally) in black, with long tight- fitting jacket. A dressmaker. The above reward will be paid by Mr. John Bristow, 138, Withington Road, Withington, for information leading to her apprehension. Warrant issued. 34.— Old Trafford ( County).— For cutting and wounding at Bradford, 13th inst.— GEORGE LIN- GARD, age about 45, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion FKIDAY, JULY 17, 1885. TITE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 fresh, hair and eyes brown, nearly blind, but does not appear so ; dress, old black cloth suit, hard felt hat. Was discharged from Crumpsall Workhouse on the 11th inst. 35.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing, 14th inst., at Newton Worsley, £ 5 and a lady's Geneva watch, glass broken, long brass chain attached— PETER LINDLEY, age 12, height about 4 ft. 5 in, complexion fair, slightly sunburnt, eyes blue ; dress, black worsted cloth suit, red and blue striped shirt, white collar, black necktie, lace boots, hard felt hat. Is supposed to have left Clifton Junction by 2.30 p. m. train on 14th inst. for Bury. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. 36.— Pemberton ( Count]/).— For failing to report — License Holder DAVID PUGH, Office No. 27502, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, large blue mark over nose, hare lip. Sentenced at Belgaum, E. Indies on the 17th November, 1880, to 5 years' penal servitude for a military offence. Licensed 2nd April, 1885. G 1185. Information to Supt. A.. Weir, Pemberton, Lanes. 37— Rochdale ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee JANE BLEWETT, Office No. 27458, age 40, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes hazel. Sentenced at Preston 15th October, 1884, to 6 months' hard labour and 2 years' police supervision for larceny. 2451/ 13. Information to Supt. Tindall, Rochdale. 38,— Liverpool( C ity).— For child- stealing, 18th ult — SARAH GRANTON, age 21, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion dark, pale, eyes grey ; dress ( when last seen), black satin dress, trimmed with three rows of beaded lace in front, black cloth dolman, trimmed two satin bows in front, high- crown cardinal bonnet, trimmed six small cardinal feathers, fastened with three gold pins. The child, James Crosseth, 12 months old, is dressed in navy blue coat and cape, trimmed same colour satin, black straw sailor's hat, trimmed black, corded silk ribbon band, patent leather ankle- band boots, elastic in front, and black socks. She obtained a copy of register of birth, and had in her possession a small hand- basket, fastened with two leather straps, and a square box, covered with black patent leather and studded with brass nails. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Appearance of a tramp. 114.— Altrincham ( County).— In the canal at Lynn, the body of a man, age 55 to 60, medium build, hair grey, beard under chin sandy, old scar on inner front of right knee cap, one on top of left foot, which may have been caused by burns or scalds. Body, with the exception of a pair of thick cotton stockings, was in a nude state, and appeared to have been in the water about 2 months. Information to Supt. Leighton, Altrincham. LANCASHIRE. 115.— Bury ( County).— About 5 a. m., 14th inst., in Woodhill- road, Elton, Bury, a male child, about 6 weeks old, complexion fair, eyes blue, 3 vaccination marks left arm, only 2 of which have taken eflect, appears to have been vaccinated about a week since ; dress, plain cotton nightdress, hand- stitched, tied at back with tape, small hole cut in back, blue flannel petticoat with white cotton band, and white cotton chemise, small piece cut out of corners, and a piece of white flannel about 2 inches broad, with blue stripe in centre, tied round waist. The child was wrapped in an old cotton chemise, a black alpaca skirt with flounce at bottom, a small black- and- red shoulder shawl hole, near centre, and a white cotton napkin with blue stripe down centre. It is requested that inquiry be made at workhouses, etc., as from the holes which have been cut in the clothing, the child and its mother have probably recently been inmates of some workhouse or public institution. WORCESTERSHIRE. 116.— Pershore ( County).— 2nd ult., in a mill pond at Aldington Crook, near Evesham, the body of a newly born female child, wrapped in brown paper, and a woman's coarse half bleached Derry apron, hole worn in upper part, band marked at one end with red cotton ==, and at the other . The parcel was tied up with white tapeand brown string, and wrapped up in coarse hurden wrapping sewn up with black thread. The body showed cut marks about the throat and neck, and appeared to have been in the water 2 or 3 weeks.
