" The night also is Thine."— Ps lxxiv. 16. Whilst all as a general truth, acknowledge the care God takes of His people by night as well as by day, there is a speciality of comfort reserved in the Word of God, for such as feel their need of it, in the recorded instances of intercourse between God and His people during the night season. Amongst such must be many of our police force during the long dark hours of their continual watchfulness. The very night that Jacob left his earthly father's house, he saw in his dream a ladder, and the Lord stood above and said. " Behold, I am with thee." Another night spent with God— J acob says he saw God " face to face," and so called the place Peniel. Looking at Judges we find something very remarkable in God's constant dealings by night with his servant Gideon. After Solomon had worshipped, saying on the open- ing of the House of Prayer that he hacl builded, " Let Thine eye? be open upon this house day and night," God in that night appeared to him, saying, " Ask what I shall give thee." During the night, God pre- pared the gourd which should be for the comfort of His servant Jonah during the day, thinking of him while he slept. While Darius passed a sleepless night, Daniel was learning in the lions' den how God was keeping their mouths closed, hour after hour, so that none could injure His " greatly beloved" one. Full of interest is the record of that stormy night when the disciples toiled in rowing, the wind contrary, Jesus absent, but " about the fourth watch of the night" He came unto them, calming the storm without, tne fears within—" It is I." Peter, sleeping in prison, was roused f y the angel and led through the gates of the city, and to a house where " many were gatnered together pray- ing," a night that made the hearts of many glad. At midnight in prison, Paul and Silas sang praises. By night at Corinth the Lord said to Paul " I am with thee at Jerusalem, " Be of good cheer. Paul," in the ship : " fear not, Paul." By night, God brought His people out of Egypt*; by night He revealed Himself in a. pillar of fire. H>: had His covenant of the night. He caused rain and dew to fall by night, and east wind to blow.
