II Birkenhead ( Borough).— For failing to re- port— License Holder ELIZABETH CHARLOTTE DUFF, Office No. 27449, age 17, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- plexion fresh, hair grey, eyes grey, scars on forehead and each arm. Sentenced at Nether Knutsford on the 20th May, 1879, to 7 years' penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 24th May, 1385. Y F 234.— Supervisee HENRY O'NEILL, Office No. 19313, age 39, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes grey, short nose, scar on right cheek, rings on 2nd and 3rd left lingers, scars on head. Sentenced at Chester on the 5th August, 1874, to 10 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision, with 20 lashes for robbery. Licensed 8th June, 1882. A 1254. Information to the Chief Constable, Birkenhead. 12.— Stockport ( Borough)— For being concerned with William Hy. Barratt, in custody ( see Case Xo. 63) in stealing, 2nd ult., from a Branch Post Office, £ 50 10s. in Bank of England notes and gold — CHARLES CLARK, alias CORNELIUS SHEEN, CON, and COCKNEY, age about 24, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair ( very short) and moustache ( slight) light, slightly pock- pitted, speaks with a London accent; dress, black ribbed worsted coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, " Miller and Co., Liverpool," on buttons, turn down collar, broad tie with horseshoe pin set imitation diamonds, yellow kid gloves, black hard felt hat, of gentlemanly appearance. May be wearing a new silver hunter watch, No. 79722, maker " Lewiss, Liverpool." Stated to have been liberated from Walton Gaol, Liverpool, on 26th or 27th March last, after under- going 1 months' imprisonment for attempted till robbery. Has also been convicted in London, supposed in name of Cornelius Sheen— FREDERICK BRIDGE, age 23, height about 5 ft. 2 in., stout, complexion fresh, hair dark, moustache ( heavy) and eyes brown, full broad features ; dress, black ribbed worsted coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, " Miller and Co., Liverpool," on buttons, black hard felt hat, wears a heavy gold albert guard. A native of Manchester.— ADA , age about 25, short, medium build, hair ( cut short behind) black, eye3 blue, rather deaf; dress, black broche velvet jacket, round hat. Were seen at Clayton- square, Liverpool, about a week since. The men are well known to the Police at Manchester, Liverpool, London, & c., to betting men, flash prosti- tutes, and at betting clubs. 13.— Stockport ( Borough).— stealing 19th inst a quantity of wearing apparel ( recovered).— MARY or SARAH DYER, age 40 to 45, medium height and build, complexion florid, hair ( very short) dark, lost front teeth ; dress, black jacket, maroon coloured frock, red handkerchief round neck, black hat turned up all round, wore a pair of men's side- spring boots. Stated she came from a lodging- house at Manchester, 15th inst, and that she had been an inmate of the Man- chester Infirmary suffering from erysipelas, by which disease she lost her hair. It is requested that inquiry be made at common lodging- houses, < fcc. Information to Lieut.- Col. Staples, Chief Constable, Stockport. DERBYSHIRE. 14.— Derby ( County).— For stealing, 9th inst., at Long Eaton, a pair of striped cotton socks and £ 1 2s 6d. — WILLIAM BARBER, age 17, slight, height 4 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark ; dress, dark ribbed cloth jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, low shoes with cloth tops, black hard felt hat. Had with him a new suit of clothes and a pair of boots. A factory hand ; native of Long Eaton, Derbyshire. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Lawson, Derby. DURHAM. 15.— Durham ( County).— For stealing, 24th ult, a silver watch, No. 64926, maker, supposed " Gowland, Sunderland," " W. J. H." engraved on shield at back, and silver albert chain attached— Mrs. MAIN, age 35 to 40, complexion sallow, hair ( brushed back from fore- head) dark brown, eyes hazel, nose slightly turned up, speaks with a South- country accent; dress, double breasted brown ulster, navy blue dress with lace round neck and wrists, round black beaded bonnet. Carried an umbrella and carpet bag. Warrant issued. 16.— Durham ( County).— For bigamy at Coxhoe) 17th November last— JOHN WHITTAKER, age 47^ heights ft. 10 or 11 in., slight, hair ( turning grey), complexion, moustache and eyes dark, slightly knock- kneed ; dress, dark grey tweed jacket, trousers, and vest, light drab quartered cap with peak, or black coat and trousers, turban cap with fur round edge. A shoe- maker ; native of Yorkshire. Has worked at Crook, Chester - le - Street, Houghton- le Spring, and Castle Eden. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dunn, County Constabulary Office, Durham. ESSEX. 17.— Colchester ( County)— For failing to report - Supervisee ROBERT BURCH SELF, Office No. 14298, age 32, height 5 ft. 3j in., complexion fresh, hair light sandy, eyes dark grey, small scar back of left hand, 2 pockmarks right side of forehead, lost two top front teeth. Sentenced at Chelmsford 5th March, 1874, to 7 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for burglary. Licensed 12th August, 1879. A 1020. Information to Supt. Daunt, Essex Constabulary) Colchester. 18.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing, 17th inst., from the Officers' Quarters at the Camp, a gentle man's gold Geneva watch, open face, black hands, bruise on back of case, glass cracked, maker " Le Compte, Geneva," No. 7076, a gold chain about a foot long, curb pattern, with three watch- keys attached, a pair of gentleman's lace boots, and a red and black striped cotton shirt, maker " Cox," marked in ink.— THOMAS HARRIS, a deserter from the Bedfordshire Regiment, age 26, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion swarthy, hair ( cut short and very thin) brown, eyes ( small) light brown, moles on back of neck, walks as if he had a slight injury to hip; dress, drab brown small check coat suit, the stolen shirt and boots. A bootmaker, native of Rushden, Northamptonshire. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Colchester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 19.— Cardiff ( Borough). — For stealing £ 50, 7th inst., - CHARLES PHILLIPS, a clerk, age 22, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight, complexion florid, pimples on face and neck, hair dark brown, moustache and side whiskers ( slight) sandy ; supposed wearing a reddish tweed jacket. May endeavour to go to America. Information to Head Constable Hemingway, Cardiff". 20.— Neath ( Borough). — For fraud, 6th inst. EDWARD LEWIS, alias EDWIN LEWIS, age about 37, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair moustache and imperial dark, lost third and fourth fingers of left hand ; dress, small brown plaid coat and vest, moleskin trousers, soft brown billycock hat, one of his boots cut near toe. A fitter, native of Melingriffith, near Cardiff, holds a certificate as second engineer, and has been employed at tin works. Information to Head Constable Phillips, Neath. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 21 — Fishponds ( County). — For larceny — THOMAS CHAMBERLAIN, a hawker of needles, buttons, & c., age 50, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and whiskers black ; dress, brown cloth coat ( patched) or blue serge jacket, fustian trousers. Has been in the army. 22.— Fishponds ( County).— For larceny— ED- WARD ORGAN, age 22, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., com- plexion pale, hair light; dress, brown mixture suit, blue tie, lace boots, black bowler hat. A native of Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Fishponds. KENT. 23.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd March last, a gold albert ( recovered) and a gold chronograph watch, " Improved Chronograph Patent" on open face— EDWARD JAMES YOUNG ( see Case ATo. 78, 8th inst.), age 16, height 5 ft. 2J in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, two scars right side of lower jaw, scar from bite left thumb. Was a sailor on board the brigantine " Impetuos of Guernsey." Stated he was a native of Strutton- ground, Westminster.— TOM, alias " COCKNEY TOM," a sailor on board the same vessel, age about 20, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight, complexion pale, hair light brown ; dress, sup- posed serge jacket, pilot trousers, cheese cutter cup. Supposed native of Camden Town, and to have been employed on the stage. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Town Hall, Folkestone. LANARKSHIRE. 24.— Motherwell ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of JAMES BOYD, whose apprehen- sion is sought for violent assault 6th ult., ago 22, height 6 ft 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, mous- tache light, eyes blue, small round face ; dress, black coat and vest, light tweed trousers, black hard felt hat; or dark tweed jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, cap of same material as jacket. Served in the Lanarkshire Constabulary for 18 months previous to 26th March last, and previous to that for about C weeks in the Royal Irish Constabulary. A gamekeeper ; native of Avelbane, Clontribet, Monaghan. Lately resided at Dalziel, Motherwell. Absconded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 25,— Bacup ( County).— For larceny ( servant)— ALICE WOOD, alias KERSHAW and JANE WROE, a widow, age about 45, rather tall and slender, com plexion pale, hair dark, low forehead and thin face ; dress, brown- and- grey shawl, dark grey serge dress black bonnet, trimmed orange flower. May seek em- ployment as housekeeper or servant at a public- house. 26.— Blackburn ( County).— For stealing 1 18- carat gold English lever watch, No. 36197, white dial, steel hands ; 1 18- carat gold ditto, No. 313174; 1 silver English lever ditto, No. 11555, cream colour dial, gold hands- JAMES DAVIES, alias DAVIESON, a native of Glasgow, age 32, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in. complexion, hair, and moustache dark, one leg short and crooked, wears very thick sole and heel on boot, walks with a stick ; dress, dark cloth monkey jacket and trousers, hard billycock hat. Information to Supt. Myers, Blackburn. 27.— Bu ry ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences — JAMES STAFFORD, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) light sandy, whiskers and moustache sandy, eyes blue, clean and smart appearance ; dress, dark tweed coat, dark cord trousers and vest, low shoes, black billycock hat. A pensioner, late of 37th Regt.; native of Manchester. Information to Supt. Henderson, Bury. 28.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing, 13th inst., a gold lever watch, No. 11835, centre seconds, engine turned cases, white dial— CHARLES BRADY, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight, complexion fair, hair light brown, long thin moustache, of smart ap- pearance ; dress, light brown cloth overcoat, dark worsted coat under, dark trousers and vest, hard felt hat. 29.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing, 11th inst., 1 new black serge vest, lined black Italian cloth ; 1 striped grey and white woollen shirt ( nearly new),. 1 pair half water- tight boots, with toe caps, have been soled; 1 white flannel shirt, 1 silver albert guard, curb pattern, pendant, with green stone one side and reddish ditto the other, attached ; 1 Canadian gold watch, with key shape of a pistol; 1 grey and black tweed coat, with small orange spots, 2 pockets outside, 1 inside left breast — JAMES BOURKE, alias MICHAEL BOURKE and SPIDER, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion freckled, hair and mous- tache very light ( nearly white), rather round shouldered ; dress, black coat ( faded) yellowish brown trousers, patched at knee, old lace boots, and cap. Supposed to have gone to Oldham, where a married sister resides. 30— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult., at Failsworth, a suit of clothes. ALBERT LEE, age 12, ( small for his age), hair brown, eyes blue; dress light brown jacket, dark tweed trousers and vest, side spring boots, hard felt hat. 31.— Old Trafford ( County). — For being con cerned with William Henry Barrett ( in custody) in stealing on 31st March last a cash- box containing £ 4 from a grocer's shop at Longsight — CHARLES CLARKE, alias " CON," age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, moustache light, slightly pock- pitted, speaks with a London accent; dress, black worsted cloth coat and vest, dark tweed trousers with white stripe down side, turn- down collar, broad tie with gold horseshoe pin set with several small imita- tion diamonds, yellow kid gloves, black billycock hat,, of respectable appearance. Was liberated from Walton Gaol on 26th or 27th March, after undergoing one month's imprisonment for attempted till robbery in Liverpool. Has also been convicted for similar offences in London. Is accompanied by Fred Bridge, age about 23, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, complexion TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1885. A solicitor's clerk, native of Manchester, and is believed to have resided from January to the end of March in the neigh- bourhood of Soho- street, Liverpool, with a prostitute. Has been* convicted in London. These men now travel from town to town committing till robberies, and attend race meetings for betting purposes. Are now supposed to be in London or Liverpool, where they are well known. Warrant issued. 32.— Old Trafford ( County).— For failing to re- port- Supervisee ANN O'DONNELL, Office No. 21384, age 53, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair brown, eyes brown, nose broken, scar on fore- head and upper lip, I. D. A. T. on left arm Sentenced at Manchester 15th June, 1882, to 12 months' im- prisonment and 7 years' police supervision for larceny. < 57475. Information to Supt. Sentenced at Ivirkdale 17th April, 1877, to 7 years' penal servi- tude and 7 years' police supervision for larceny Licensed 7th January, 1882. D 76. Information to the Superintendent, Prescot. 31.— Salford ( County).— For stealing £ 4 10s. 6d.— MICHAEL JOHN REID, alias REALEY, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, cut mark on nose ; dress, brown tweed jacket, Sight brown tweed trousers, side- spring boots ( old), black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 35.— Salford ( County). — For stealing £ 3— GEORGE WILLIAM CHADWICK, age 16, very small for his age, complexion fresh, hair light, large scar across forehead, walks with a slovenly gait; dress, brown suit with white spots, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. 36— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- Supervisee THOMAS WEBB, Office No. 22157, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown eyes grey, pockpitted. Sentenced at Bradford, 26th November, 1877, to 7 years' penal servitude and 5 years' police supervision for larceny. Liberated 25th November, 1884. D 1271. License Holder GEORGE RENTON, Office No. 2783S, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes blue, pockpitted. Sentenced at Liverpool, 15th January, 1881, to 5 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for house- breaking. Licensed 12th inst. H 59. Information to the Chief Superintendent, Detective Department, Liverpool. 37.— Manchester ( City). — For stealing £ 20 — EDWARD SEXTON, age 17, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown ; drsss, light tweed suit, black billycock hat, may be wearing a long light overcoat. A native of Manchester. Not to be appre- hended out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Rawlinson, Manchester. 33.— Blackburn ( Borough).— For stealing, 5tli inst., a mahogany box and scales ( recovered) LAS- CELLES ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and beard on chin grey, red lump about the size of a shilling under left ear, stoops slightly when walking ; dress, grey tweed coat and vest, light grey tweed trousers, collar and tie, black billycock hat. A timekeeper or clerk of works ; supposed native of London. Was at Burnley • 6th inst, and is supposed to have gone in the direction of Yorkshire. Information to Chief Constable Ward, Blackburn. 39— Rochdale ( Borough).— For failing to report- Supervisee JAMES HOPKINS, Office No. 18794, age 31, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion sallow, hair and • eyes brown, scars on right eyebrow and right of fore- head ( large), blue mark right arm, rings 3rd and 4th left fingers, 2 blue marks left arm. Sentenced at Salford, 21st February, 1876, to 7 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for receiving. Licensed 31st March, 1882. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Rochdale. 40.— Warrington ( Borough.) — For embezzling £ 600 on 7th and 24th October last- JOSEPH CRAIK, a cotton spinning mill manager, age 47, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion florid, hair brown, limps left leg, and walks with a stick, good looking, and of gentle- manly appearance. Absconded 2nd inst. 41— Warrington ( Borough).— For stealing a gold demi- hunter Geneva watch, No. 114702, gold chain with locket and gold pencil case attached— PRIVATE JAMES MILLS, South Lancashire Regt., age 29, height 5 ft. 5J in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache sandy, eyes blue ; dress, regimentals. Left by train for Manchester at 7.30 p. m., 1st inst. A collier ; native of Mottram, Cheshire. Is well known at Kelsall- lane, Hooley- hill, near Huse, Lancashire ; also at Newton Heath, Bury, and Ashtoy.- under- Lyne. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington. NORFOLK. 42.— Fakenham ( County).— For obtaining goods by false pretences, 16th ult.— ARTHUR BROAD- WATER, age 24, stout, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, full clean face. A milk- man ; native of Whitwell, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Murrell, Walsingham. 4 3.— N o rw i c h ( City)•— For s tealing £ 6— WALTE R CLAPHAM, age 26, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes blue; dress, snuff coloured tweed suit, brown bowler hat. A clerk, native of Norwich. Information to Chief Constable Hitchman, Norwich ROXBURGSHIRE. 44.— Jedburgh ( County). — For stealing £ 3 at Hawick 12th inst.— ADAM SPROTT, age 14, height about 5 ft., complexion and hair ( cut short) dark ; dress, blue cloth jacket ( torn at elbow), old brown cord trousers, strong lace boots, and Glengarry cap. A native of Roxburgshire. Left by train for Carlisle 12th inst. after purchasing a gun with part of the money. May endeavour to go to sea. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Porter, Jedburgh. hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache ( heavy) dark brown, eyes grey, anchor tattooed back of right hand, star back of left, round shouldered, speaks distinctly; dress, grey mixture tweed coat or short black coat, brown mixture tweed trousers, hard felt hat. Was formerly captain of a steamer on the river Thames, where he is well known ; supposed native of Devon shire. Warrant issued. 49.— Ipswich ( Borough).— J. B. CORMICK, case No. 42, 20th June last, not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Lieut.- Colonel Russell, Chief Con- stable, Ipswich. SHROPSHIRE. 45.— Whitchurch ( County). — For larceny 2nd inst., atWoUerton— WILLIAM HASSALL, age 25to28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight, complexion, hair and side whiskers dark, thin features ; dress, brown jacket, plain tweed under ditto, corduroy trousers, collar and front ( all dirty), Wellington boots, black hard felt hat. A tramping labourer; native of Audlem, Cheshire. Has been previously convicted at Nantwich for lar- ceny, and at Audlem, for being on enclosed premises for an unlawful purpose. Is accompanied by a woman carrying a child about three months old. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edwards, Whitchurch. SOMERSETSHIRE. 46 — Frome ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst, a small silver Geneva watch, gold numerals, chased back, with jet albert chain attached, 6 small silver spoons ( old), 1 small silver brooch set white stone, 1 small pocket knife, bright metal handle, and £ 2 10s. in silver— A MAN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion, hair, and moustache dark, aquiline nose, hangs his head forward and turns his toes out when walking ; dress, short dark ribbed single breasted cloth coat, dark cloth vest, dark grey trousers and woollen shirt, white cotton stockings, lace boots, high black hat. A travelling clock cleaner ; supposed native of Devon ; has been in the army, and served in India. Carried a brown paper parcel containing tools, frequents low public houses, talks of his Army Service, and spends money freely. Left Frome by train for Paddington at 2.10 p. m., 6th inst. Information to Supt. Durham, Froine. STIRLINGSHIRE. 47.— Stirling ( County).— For falsehood, fraud, and wilful imposition— ROBERT GRAY, alias CRAIG, McCULLOCK, WRIGHT, & c., age 70, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight, hair and whiskers grey, thin white face, of respectable appearance, stoops when walking, fore and little finger right hand deficient, D left side, is in the habit of feigning insanity when in custody ; dress, new steel grey tweed suit, brown coloured plaid with black border, which he wears over his shoulders, lace boots ( heavy), black felt hat ( nearly new), carries a stick. His practice is to call upon farmers, shopkeepers, ifcc., and represent that he is a farmer residing at a distance, and that he is in search of his son who has ran away from home, but being short of money asks for a loan, which he promises to remit on his return home. Was previously convicted at Kilmarnock in March, 1871, and November, 1874, and sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment on each occasion. Supposed wanted for other offences. Stated he was a native of Galloway. It is requested that special inquiry be made for his apprehension. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Campbell, Stirling. SUFFOLK. 48.— Ipswich ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences— HENRY MILES, alias CAPTAIN MILES, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallovri SUSSEX ( EAST). 50.— Hastings ( Borough).— For stealing, 30th ult., at St. Leonard's- on- Sea, a silver lever watch, No. 40273, and £ 8— RICHARD FRENCH, age 15, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue ; dress, long dark coat, fustian trousera, black cap with peak. A native of Pimlico, London ; lately resided at St. Leonard's. May endeavour to join the army as band boy or bugler. Information to Chief Constable Glanister, Hastings. He was a Solicitor in practice at South Shields, County Durham, England, up to May, 1875, when he was at Scarborough England, but has not been heard of since.
