DUBLIN, TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 1885. ENGLISH POLICE. LIVERPOOL CITY. FOB stealing carpets, & c., on the 3rd inst., also for failing to report, Andrew Wilson Law, alias Henry Fisher Salmond :— A ship's engineer, native of Stirlingshire, 36 years of age, 5 feet 8J inches high, slender figure, dark brown hair and moustache, brown eyes, dark complexion, scar on bridge of nose. He was convicted at Newry, 22nd October, 1877, of larceny after previous conviction, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude, and 5 years' Police supervision, and released from Her Majesty's Convict Prison, Lusk, 21st February, 1884 ; since then he has been employed in various capacities; whilst here he was employed as a van- driver, and since absconding has applied for a situation as hotel porter. Information to GEORGE WILLIAMS, Chief Super- intendent ( 30335 M.— 56874.) FOR failing to report, supervisee Charles Webster, alias Thompson, Beg. No. W. WANTED, charged with forging and uttering a cheque, purporting to be drawn in favour of S. Saunders, and signed S. B. Platt, for £ 235, for which two £ 100 Bank of England notes, dated Liverpool, 2nd March, 1883, No. g 01281 and 91282, one £ 20 Bank of England note, dated Liverpool, 6th March, 1883, No. g 68701, and £ 15 in gold were paid, a man who gave the name of " S. Saunders " :— About 28 years of age, fresh complexion, fair hair, clean shaved, may have a small moustache, respectably dressed. A cheque No. 32/ 425449 is still missing from Mr. Platt's cheque- book, and may be filled in and tendered for payment. Information to GEORGE WILLIAMS, Chief Superin- tendent, Detective Department. Licence- holder Patrick Murphy, described in Mue- aud- Cry of 10th of last June, has not been arrested. SCOTCH POLICE. LANARKSHIRE. STOLEN from a dwelling- house in Clarkston, county Lanarkshire, on the 30th March last:— A lady's gold Geneva watch, maker's name nor number not known ; a small black beaded guard attached to watch; a gold guard of small link pattern; a gold locket, small and plain; a suit, consisting of a gray checked tweed jacket, lined with brown lining, and gray bone buttons, vest and- trowsers of same material; a suit, consisting of a black, red, and gray mixture tweed jacket, with Vest and trowsers of same material; a suit, consisting of a black corded cloth coat, single breasted, with pockets in skirts behind, lined with black lining, vest of same mate- rial, and a pair of black and white striped tweed trow- sers ; two overcoats, one a black corded cloth, single breasted, lined in body with black and in sleeves with red lining, the other- a dark- gray English tweed, single ' breasted, lined in body with black and in sleeves with blue and white striped lining; a pair of black cloth trowsers ; a man's white cotton shirt; two pairs white linen cuffs; two pairs of bone sleeve- links, one pair black, the other white; one pair of Shetland gray socks ( newly fitted) ; one white silk handkerchief, with blue border, and several white linen ones; a pair of men's lacing boots with sparables in soles ( newly soled). WANTED on the above charge of theft George Simpson, alias Kerr:— Miner or pit sinker, native of Lanarkshire, from 32 to 35 years of age, 6 feet 1 £ inches high, dark hair, dark moustache, otherwise clean shaved, long face, dark eyes, small cut mark under right jaw ; dressed when he absconded in a dark blue jacket, gray tweed vest, dark trowsers, dark cloth cap with peak of same material, and elastic- sided boots, but may now be wearing part of the stolen property. He served for some time in the Horse Guards, also in the Renfrewshire Constabulary, and a short time about two years ago in the City of Glasgow Police. His parents reside at Townhead- street, Hamilton, N. B. He was heard to say some short time previous to the theft that he in- tended to go to England as soon as he got some money. DESCRIPTION of two men, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 5th March, 1885, in the barony of Upper Belfast, parish of Shankhill, entered the house of Robert M'Clernahan, of Ballymurphy, and, after threatening the inmates, broke open a strong box and forcibly abstracted about £ 8 therefrom:— 1. Sunken eyes, small dark moustache, dark sorish eyes, red nose, pale complexion, thin face, slight make, about 6 feet high, about 30 years of age; wore a black jerry hat, long black coat, dark trowsers, and new boots; is a supposed tramp. 2. Blue eyes, fresh complexion, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 28 years of age; wore a brown coat torn on right breast, dark trowsers, and old shoes much worn in the heels; is a supposed tramp. DESCRIPTION of Thomas Cullen, native of Belfast, who stands charged with having, within the last six months, in the barony of Upper Belfast, parish of Shankhill, embezzled the sum of £ 133, the property of his- employer, Michael Car:— Blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet inches high, about 22 years of age, fair hair; wore a felt hat, dark coat, trow'sers, and vest, also wore a blue nap overcoat; is a pawnbroker's assistant. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Murphy, native of Belfast, who stands charged with having, in the barony of Upper Belfast, parish of Shankhill, failed to report himself:— Large sore scar below " left knee, cut scar right side of chin, scar on right breast, gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 26 years of age, dark brown hair; is a labourer. Michael Doyle ( charged with having feloniously obtained a letter from the Post Office, Carlow, the property of James Carey), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 28th October, 1884. Cavan. DESCRIPTION of James Murtagh, native of For- mulagh, county Longford, who stands charged with having, on the 5th March, 1885, in the barony of Tullyhunco, parish of Scrabby, stolen £ 38 from the house of his brother- in- law, John Langtry, of Dingins, county Cavan:— Cut mark over right ear, shaves all his face, small dark moustache, brown eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, long face, stout make, 5 ieet 6 or 7 inches high, about 40 years of age, dark hair; wore a round black hat, dark coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, MARCH 1 0 , 1885. Clare. DESCRIPTION of undermentioned articles which were stolen from the business house of Thomas Peacocke, at Kilrush, parish of Kilrush, and barony of Moyarta, between the hours of 8 o'clock P. M. and 11 o'clock A. M., on the 18th March, 1885:— Two silver lever watches, value for about £ 3 each; a plain silver Geneva watch, no descrip- tion ; a lady's gold watch with chased back and white dial, without glass, and dial slightly cracked ; a large gold watch without hands or glass, back plain and slightly dinged, gold dial figured on the centre; a gold watch, having gold dial with second hand de- ficient, with a gold Albert chain attached, with rather square links, about nine carat fine ; a silver necklet with silver locket attached, chain very massive, anchor chain pattern, locket open in the centre, having a compartment for holding perfume at bottom, upper portion of opening like an ordinary locket; said articles were taken off a brass bar on which they were exposed for sale at the window. Nobody slept in the concern from which they said articles were stolen on that night, and the value of all the jewellery property so stolen is about £ 17. Kilrush, March 20, 1885. ( 67665 18106.) DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender, who, on the 3rd February, 1885, absconded from the St. Patrick's Reformatory School at Upton, co. Cork :— Patrick Buttler, 17 years of age, 4 feet 11 inches high, proportionate make, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, ordinary nose, medium mouth ; formerly belonged to Cappawhite, county Tipperary ; his parents reside at Beggins. The school dress consists of corduroy trowsers and sleeved corduroy waistcoat, dark tweed coat, leather belt, blue striped shirt, all with Reformatory stamp ; Glengarry cap, and nailed boots fastened with leather straps. The mother of this boy is a blind woman, begging about the country, having three or four children along with her. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. The young man and woman described in Hue- and- Cry of 27th February, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with cattle stealing, have been arrested and sent for trial. Edward Sheehan ( embezzlement), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 30th January, 1885. David Carley ( embezzlement), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 28th October, 1884. John Hanlon ( manslaughter), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 30th September, 1884. The three persons, names and native places unknown ( charged with having robbed Thomas M'Grath), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 23rd Septem- ber, 1884. Young offender, Michael Mahony, belonging to the city of Cork, not arrested; Huo- and- Cry, 26th August, 1884. John Hogan ( manslaughter), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 12th August, 1884. Donegal. DESCRIPTION of Mary Feeny or Logue, native of Magilligan or Eglinton, county Londonderry, who stands charged with having, on the 20th February, 1885, in the barony of Innishowen, parish of Muff, unlawfully abandoned a male infant, thereby en- dangering its life see Hue- and- Cry, dated 24th Feb- ruary, 1885) :— Dark eyes, regular nose, dark com- plexion, medium make, 1 feet 10 inches high, about 25 or 30 years of age, shining black hair; wore a Cashmere dress trimmed with black satin, black jacket trimmed with fur, and yellow necktie; is a shirtmaker; stated she was married to a man named logue. The two persons, supposed to be Michael Kelly and his wife, native places unknown, who stand charged on suspicion with having, on the night of 30th November, or morning of 1st December, 1884, in the [ barony of Banagh, parish of Killaghtee, murdered one Bridget Cunningham, have not been arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 26th December, 1884. t Down. '^ f DESCRIPTION of William M'Areavey, native of Drumkeera, near Dromara, 66unty Down, who stands charged with having, on the 21st September, 1884, in the barony of Upper Iveagh, parish of Kilmegan, fired shots at the Police during a riot at Castlewellan, and with having failed to surrender to his bail, for trial at Downpatrick Spring Assizes, 1885 ;— Broad shoulders, gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 25 years of age, brown hair; is a van driver. DESCRIPTION of Thomas Leary, alias Michael Driscoll, alias Downing, native of Glandore or Bantry, who stands charged with having, on the night \ of the 1st or morning of the 2nd inst., in the barony of Kinsale, parish of Clontade, stolen a mare ( since re- covered), the property of Lawrence Murphy :— Stutters when speaking, dark eyes, regular nose, fair com- plexion, long thin face, smart make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair ; wore a black hard hat, black coat, trowsers, and vest, all much worn ; is a labourer and belongs to the militia, regiment at present not known. Mary Bligh, alias Lynch, native of Ballymoe, who disappeared from her home, in the barony of Bally- moe, parish of Drumatemple, on or about the 9tb January, 1884, has not been since heard of; Hue- and- Cry, 28th March, 1884. DESCPIPTION of Patrick Donoghue ( mother's sur- name Hurley), native of Fussa, who stands charged with having, on the 25th March. 1885, in the barony of Glenarough, parish of Kilgarvan, assaulted Daniel Shine, by striking him on the head with a mattock, from the effects of which his life is in danger:— Brown eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 25 years of age, light brown hair; wore a soft hat, dark tweed coat and trowsers, and light tweed vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Carmody, native of Lisca- hane, Tralee, who stands charged with having, on the 21st March, 1885, in the barony of Trughenacmy, parish of Cloherbrien, seriously assaulted Cornelius Doyle, whereby his life is in danger :— Rather long neck, looks down when spoken to, blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches higb, about 24 years of age, fair hair; wore a black cloth coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a farmer's son. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Flanagan, native of Royal Oak, who, on the 24th February. 1885, in the barony of Carbury, parish of Ballinadrimna, strayed away from his employer at Moyvally while in a state of insanity, and may do injury to himself:— Pearl on right eye, good- looking, erect carriage; brown eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, broad face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 27 or 28 years of age, dark hair; wore a felt hat, brown coat, trows rs, and vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of James Doherty, native of Kingsbo^^ Commons, who stands charged with having, on the^ 22nd February, 1885, in the barony of West Offaly, parish of Kildangan, seriously assaulted Denis Dempsey, gamekeeper to the Marquis of Drogheda, at Eskerhill, when warned off the land :— Ill- looking, brown eyes, hooked nose, pale yellow complexion, full round face, stout make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 25 years of age, dark hair; wore a fur cap, black tweed coat and trowsers, strong boots; may now be wearing jerry hat, tweed suit with white or gray spots; is a notorious poacher. James Comerford ( assault by stabbing), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 16th January, 1885. Patrick Canty ( embezzlement), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, llth November, 1884. King's. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who on the 6th March, 1885, absconded from the Philipstown Reformatory School, King's County:— Henry Dalton, No. 759, 17 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, medium make, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, ordinary nose and mouth, oval visage, burn marks on chest, dots on left arm ; for- merly belonged to South Dublin Union ; parents both dead ; has a cousin in Lucan: may go there. The school dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of corduroy trowsers, vest, and tunic, elastic belt, blue cloth cap ( Scotch), and strong blucher boots. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. ( 30194 M.— 56626.) DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender, who on the 23rd February, 1885, absconded from the Philipstown Reformatory School, King's County:— Thomas Bryan, 788, 17 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, stout make, fresh complexion, brown hair, brown eyes, ordinary nose, regular mouth, oval visage, scar under right eye, formerly belonged to Water- ford, his parents reside at Little Patrick- street, Waterford. The school dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of corduroy trowsers, vest, and tunic, elastic belt, blue cloth cap ( Scotch), and strong blucher boots. This boy absconded with Richard Halpin, a Dublin boy. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. ( 30149 M.— 66521.) Thomas Bergin ( serious assault, and failing to answer his bail), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 29th December, 1884. Young offender, Thomas Courtnay, described in Hue- and- Ory of 26th of September, 1884, has not been arrested. Leitrim. DESCRIPTION of Martin M'Namara ( mother's sur- name Carroll), native of Mungret, who stands charged with having, on the 5th April, 1885, in the barony of Pubblebrien, parish of Mungret, seriously assaulted Patrick Boland, by striking him on the head with a cricket bat, thereby placing his life in danger:— High cheek bones, narrow chin, long neck, gray eyes, slightly cocked nose, dark complexion, small face, slight make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 20 years of age, dark hair ; wore a soft black hat, black coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a labourer. THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, APRIL 14, 1885. -^ DESCRIPTION of Alfred Nelson Brayne, supposed to 3 a native of Fermoy, who stands charged with having, on the 25th February, 1885, in the borough of Limerick, parish of St. Michael's, embezzled certain sums of money amounting to £ 2 or £ 3, the property of his employers, Messrs. William Henry Smith and Sons ( News Agents) :— Moustache and whiskers, chin shaved, gray or blue eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 45 years of age, fair hair; wore a low hard felt hat, tweed coat, trowsers, and vest, and overcoat; served in the army. DESCRIPTION of a watch, the property of Francis Hayden, of Castlerea, which was stolen from his dwelling- house, situate at Castlerea, parish of Kil- keevan, barony of Castlerea, and county of Ros- common, on the 18th March, 1885, viz. :— A double- cased silver lever watch, No. 20,106, maker Donegan, with " Donegan, Dame- street," engraved on dial; value for £ 6 6$.; also a long worsted guard attached, generally worn round the neck. P., which were stolen from Ballinkeele House, in the parish of Kilmallock, barony of i Ballaghkeen, on the night of the 5th or morning of the 6th April, 1885 :— 1. A gold cup, bearing the inscription " Kent Hunt Cup, won by Torpedo— Misadventure— 4 years old;" this cup is oval shaped, about two feet high, has two handles and a lid ; valued at £ 100. 2. Three oval- shaped salvers, silver plated; value for £ 1 10s. each. 3. Three coasters, silver plated, with wooden bottoms, having in centre of wood a round piece of silver with letters M. A. M. inscribed; these are valued at £ l 10a. each. 4. A silver mustard pot with lid. It is about three inches high, and bears the letters M. A. M.; valued at £ 1. 5.
