My kinsmen stand afar off'." Thus did they treat the Crucified One eighteen hundred years ago. How are we treating Him to- day 1 Another " Good Friday" is gone, and what has the event commemorated on that day been to us ? Has it been nothing to us as we passed by 1 Stop and listen — He who is " Mighty to save" ( Isaiah lxiii. 1), " Able to save" ( Heb. vii. 25), " Ready to save" ( Isaiah xxxviii. 20), still speaks from that Cross, and in His sayings He reveals Himself to us. " Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." He is our High Priest. He ever maketh intercession for us. " To- day shalt thou be with me in Paradise," and who could gainsay the King's Word which went forth with power ? " Behold thy son," and in His thought for the grief and loneliness of another, do we not see our Burden- Bearer? Again, in that terrible cry, " My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me!" may we not each one answer that question, Why ? " for me." He is the Scapegoat. He was made sin " for me." " I thirst," and to- day, too, He would fain be our Substi- tute. He thirsts for souls, and would fain see of the travail of His soul and be satisfied. " It is finished." If He says so. surely we may believe it; and lastly, let us hear Him say, " Father, into Thy Hands I commend my spirit," and learn something of that spiritual life which, beginning with forgiveness, ends in entire self- surrender. " And I, if Ibe lifted up, will draw all men unto Me." " How shall we escape if we neglect so great salva- tion?" See that ye " do not frustrate the grace of God." S. AND H.
