SPECIAL NOTICE. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. PLOSIONS FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A recent case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. HOWCROFT & WATKINS, COYENT GARDEN, LONDON. HIGH LEVEL- LOW LEVEL, " Once when I was in London I was going to the Crystal Palace, and I asked a policeman to show me where to get my ticket. ' There's two lines,' lie said : • which do you want t' Of course I told him I wanted the best, and asked what difference there was between them. '' Well,' said he, ' they both start from this station, and they botli get to the Palace. They call one High Level and the other Low Level. One runs right into the Palace, and there you are ; the other sets you down not far off, only you've got to go up scores of stairs before you're into the place itself.' ' If that's it, give me the High Level, of course,' and I wondered that anybody ever went the other way. That set me meditating. Folks going to Heaven by the Low Level— going to Heaven, but ever so much lower than they might be— going through tunnels and cuttings, instead of being in the light and sunshine— starting from the same station, but the lines different. There's Paul starting for the Celestial City, right upon the High Level from the very first. He says, ' Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do 1' It was Thou. He hadn't a great capital I in his thoughts. The jailer cried out, ' What must I do to be saved?' It was /, and there's thousands of people who never get beyond that. Mind you, I don't say that it isn't right. What shall a man give in exchange for his soul ? A man comes to Jesus seeking his own salvation like this, and he shall find it too; but for all that ' tis the Low Level. And Paul went along a more excellent way. The High Level starts where a man doesn't see himself so much as his Blessed Lord, and he sees what his sins have done, and he see* his Saviour as ' altogether lovely,' and he wants to do anything for Him, and cries out, ' Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?' Paul gave Self notice to quit, and gave up the freehold to his Lord. He made short work of Self. Pain, and loss, and trouble, and death were nothing to Paul if he could only serve his Lord. Low Level folk are always wanting the Lord to wait upon them with health, and prosperity, sunshine, and best robes. Th « y keep faying, ' I hope the Lord will keep me to the end.' High Levelkeeps saying, ' My meat and my drink is to do the will of my Father which is in Heaven.'" DANIEL QUQRN.
